Great video. Green is used because our eyes are most sensitive to green light. Given the same power output, human eyes would judge the green light to be brighter. That's why green laser pointers are used when visibility is crucial, especially in daylight e.g. by astronomers pointing at far objects, and as target markers for weaponry. In contrast, or eyes are least sensitive to red light. That's why they are used when night vision is important. Since red light affect our irises the least, they remain wide open in the presence of red light, allowing to see other things when it's dark. That's why red is used on darkened theaters to illuminate the aisles as well as EXIT signs. It's least distracting to our vision of the stage. In other words, it's a trade-off: Green is best in an emergency but red is preferable in darkened environments where we need to see other things.
Unless you're a big corporation like Walmart or McDonald's. That's smart and has been through it with the cheap stuff and has learned their lesson that the cheap stuff ends up being more expensive than the expensive stuff. As I've been told you have to spend a dollar to save a dime.
Great Video! Just would like to point out. A non maintained quality sign will last just as long as a generic sign if it is not maintained properly. ALL signs need maintenance eventually. No sign on the market will ever be able to maintain itself. Every sign dies eventually. Dual Lite, Sure Lites, and Lithonia are the best brands imo.
Ehh, somewhat. A high quality sign goes years without maintenance, a generic sign will after a very short amount of time. Per say, dual lite products don’t die nearly as much as generic garbage. Lithonia lighting was good, however they’re just generic nowadays, same with sure likes. Dual lite is my favorite
@@FireAlarmDude5967 Sure, a higher quality sign will live longer than a generic sign. Lithonia, Sure Lites, and Dual Lite are all in the same league. Lithonia does have some generic options, yes. Sure Lites, haven't seen generic products from Sure Lites before. Hubbell has compass as their generic brand. everything needs maintenance eventually. Dual Lites I would bet would last the longest. But yes, I would feel a lot better in a building with name brand products, than generic garbage. I would feel comfortable relying on name brands. :)
@@queencitysirens8755 Sure lites products are terrible, they’re really bad along with lithonia. The newer signs from them are absolutely horrible, the only brand that’s been consistent is dual lite. Lithonia was great back in the day but now they’re just rebranded garbage
In the UK it is required by law to have green running man signs or a green running man sign with exit lettering but you can't have exit lettering on its own and you also can't have red, it needs to be green.
I went to a school built in 1960. They still had the original 1960s signs. I remember kids would occasionally steel the plastic front, so the maintenance guy had to keep installing new ones. Often times he's buy them, but they were larger than the fixture, so he'd have to trim them. Sometimes that meant the T in EXIT was cut off.
i go to a middle school that has exittronix exit signs with self diagnostics and EVERY ONE OF THEM HAS A BATTERY FAILURE OR BATTERY DISCONNECT and ther is emergilite incandessant emergency lights i seen a couple with battery failure codes and 3 in the indoor pe court there is 3 with 1 lens gone and there is one with a battery disconenected code
Even though you could argue my options are not valid as i live in a country where the “running man” signs are the standard, i feel as though the green exit signs would be better when it comes to foreigners, as at least where i live, green is typically an “egress” or “escape route” colour And where i live, fire exit doors even have green signs on them with instructions on how to open the door (which is a bit ridiculous most of the time as it is a case of “push bar to open”, i can understand it where you have to manually unlock a lock)
So my church was in need of new exit signs and we got these torchstar combos. They were were like $25 per unit, at first I was worried about quality due to how cheap they are. But, we had the power go out at night and the emergency lights were very bright and lit up everything. We’ve had them for over a year and they are still doing well. So not all cheap exit signs are bad. It would be cool if u did a reveiw on these, it would be nice to have your opinion.
2:34 They use the color white to reflect the light. Same thing is used in some landscape path lights and even with the EST Genesis strobes. I made a DIY “Hat” style pathway light and the brightness difference was huge when I painted the inside white. But I would say those emergency lights could be good for small rooms. Im getting one of those soon. I do not expect it to be bright but its an emergency light and should light up enough to navigate my room.
The main entrance/lobby at my school doesn’t have an exit sign physically installed below the doorway, I’m guessing because of low ceiling clearance. But there are exit signs in different rooms that lead to the main entrance. Half of their emergency lighting was vintage, and one of them was in my old classroom. The fire alarm setup is Addressable Silent Knight with SpectrAlert Advances.
this is the BEST video on exit signs i've ever seen in terms of good and very well thought out ideas and things that most people don't think about when purchasing them which always drives me nuts! i had no idea about the smoke part of it at all oddly enough, never crossed my mind. please make this a series! The more awareness we can bring to these important issues, you bring up, the better in my opinion. I feel KNOWLEDGE is POWER!!!
@@FireAlarmDude5967 how'd you get the smoke effect in the video? i'd love to test out how my own exit signs/emergency lights. i'm not sure what to get sadly. if you or anyone else could give me your thoughts, that'd be great! thanks so much in advance.
If I were you, I’d get a fog machine. A fog machine is excellent because it simulates all the effects of regular smoke, just it’s not toxic and it’s safer. Fog machines can be pretty cheap too
@@FireAlarmDude5967 thanks so much. i knew everything except for the smoke part so i learned something totally new and feel better knowing it to be honest. i sent the video to a few of my friends and family actually so they could be more aware of the issues themselves.
Even as an American, I feel like the green running man exit signs that you see in Europe are more consistent than the ones found in the United States. They’re always one color, and they have the same pictogram no matter where you go. As an extra bonus, they can be read by anyone no matter what language someone speaks. That’s why they commonly have no lettering on them.
Loved this video. It gave me a few really good ideas for future vids for my own channel. If I do a video in the future that this video helped inspire, would you like credit or something like that for the ideas that you helped me to come up with? If so, how would you want me to give you the credit? In the video somewhere or in the description? It's up to you. It helped me think of a few vid ideas on other topics with regards to emergency lighting that I personally don't think is being talked about enough.
The only thing wrong about fire alarms is the damn Spectralert knockoffs that are non UL listed and costs like 15 dollars on Amazon. Some people fall for it and installs them in their building.
I believe that if u do not have money to buy emergency lights make one out of paper. All you need is tape crayons or markers, scissors and a pencil or pen. They won't be able to get your attention but they are really fun to install out of paper and tape!
I purchased a 2-pack Emergency Light Exit. I plugged in battery connector 5-mins before turning power on the EXIT lit up and the emergency lights came on immediately. I expected the Emergency Lights to go off, they didn’t. When doing the 2nd sign I checked everything better that the first time, I saw nothing different. The next day I checked and the Lights were still on. I push the only test button and the red AC light goes off the Exit light goes off and the Emergency Lights go half bright. What do I miss?
@@FireAlarmDude5967 To make things even funnier, in the earth science portable there is a random emergency “light” with no heads, even the remote head that is supposed to be above the door is missing the head.
