I really appreciate how you addressed the Predatory Lesbian trope. It’s a real issue in my life. Being a lesbian myself I often find that my straight friends, who are girls, will not invite me to their sleepover parties for fear of sleeping in the same room with me and suddenly go quiet when I talk about my newest crushes on straight girls in our school that btw is full of straight people. I’m just a little gay fish swimming in a SEA of heterosexuality!!!! Anyway, any light brought to the subject delicately is honorable and helps a lot. Thank you!

@@user-mb9nm7bq5e Porn is different from romance and friendship. People rarely want to see the steps between strangers and sex. When a friend comes out to other friends, despite them possibly being turned on or even curious, they are very scared to talk about it or address the relationship challenges that would occur. Now that doesn't excuse exclusion or silent treatment, but it's not as simple as homophobia. It's likely just something that their family never talked about; it could be worse. For every single person its different.

Honestly one of the worst parts about the "proving a disabled person is faking it" trope isn't just that it's a cliche, it's that it encourages abled people to distrust disabled people and has lead people to think that people who use wheelchairs have to never be able to walk. Sometimes physically disabled people need their mobility aids and sometimes they do not. Sometimes pain isn't bad or it's inconvenient to have the mobility aid or they don't have to use it for short distances. There's an expectation that people who are in wheelchairs cannot ever walk, that the only way they can get around is the wheelchair. That people who use a cane or crutches have to ALWAYS have to use them. That if someone doesn't have a limp sometimes, they're faking it. It's even plot point in mystery shows. Doesn't help that when a show is interested in showing a disabled character it's only ever someone who is permanently wheelchair bound causing abled people to just have ZERO concept of the diversity in experiences of physically disabled people who use mobility aids. I'd love to see a show have a character explain this to the audience because we're still literally at the point in 2020 where the audience needs that explicitly told to them. This concept really stems from the idea that anyone who could ever walk would always walk. Anyone that could ever walk without a cane would walk without a cane. It ignores that pain and muscle strength are variable and that pain is an important factor in whether people who could theoretically walk without a mobility aid, even for short distances, choose to. Seriously, writers, you need to understand that the "this person in a wheelchair must have been faking their disability because one time they were spotted standing or walking" is problematic and inaccurate and causes real world harm. I get enough dirty looks for being under 30 and needing a cane. And the execution of the trope in this show again literally says "anytime you suspect a disabled person of faking it, you're probably right so you should expose them!" which could lead to wheelchair bound people being thrown out of their chairs and/or wheelchair users who can walk sometimes being ostracized unfairly.

The scene in that show with that trans character just outing herself randomly in a public bathroom made it clear to me the writers have never even TALKED with a trans person. Like even going IN a public bathroom as a trans person is fucking terrifying, and in a world where we are assaulted, harassed, and even killed for our identities it’s just unrealistic and weird for them to write a trans character who seemingly doesn’t have to worry about the stress and danger we all know every day, and honestly its misrepresentative and willfully sockpuppet-y.

Why do we keep letting people who haven’t been in high school in 20 years write about high school. I looked it up. All the writers are at least 40 years old. One of them is in their 50s. Bc yeah THOSE people totally know what teens will respond and relate to.

Ailish It is a really weird pattern. I’ve been out of high school for over 15 years, and I wouldn’t be able to write something even REMOTELY close to a real teenager today. A big part of why is because so much of what I remember about being a teen is irrelevant to many teens (especially younger ones) today. Younger writers (Maybe someone right out of college) may have less experience, but are much BETTER for this material if Hollywood insists on writing teenage characters for teenage audiences.
@overlydramaticpanda

Because people actually in high school or most recently out of high school aren't the ones getting jobs as screenwriters and the high-school/college demographic (14-25 year olds) is one of the most lucrative in terms of people actually watching series on TV or streaming sites (along with the retirees). It's not really anything that mysterious.

Elijah Thomas the episode with the trans woman from the trailer is actually really good. The trans people aren’t shamed in any way. The “cool” boy actually brings the trans women to take over for a bikini dog wash that originally was a bunch of teenage girls, but the teenage girls got too grossed out by the dogs so they couldn’t continue the charity fund. But after this “cool boy” brings the trans women to the wash, there’s a scene where Debbie Ryan and one of the trans women meet eachother in the restroom and it’s just a really nice scene and episode overall :)

As someone who is trans I was very pleasantly surprised by the episode. It was actually pretty nice. My guess is that they either had a trans writer on the team for that episode or consulted a trans activist in how they should write and do trans representation on the show (and they actually listened). But yeah you only see the trans character and background actors one episode. I believe every character and background actor who is trans is actually played by someone who is trans. If anyone is looking for some better then average scenes with trans youth characters I would recommend just jumping around in that one episode if you want some context or just watching the scenes with the trans character in their own.

Am I the only one that hates this trope of 20 something year old actors playing high school students like, I always used to wonder why teenagers in tv shows and films had such clear skin, great teeth, looked so perfect and had such an extensive vocabulary , because when i was a teenager i kept on breaking out had oily skin, had to wear braces and I had a good vocabulary but not one that ressembled a middle aged man. lmao. Itd be nice if Producers and directors were more realistic in their casting so viewers could relate to the high schoolers they see on TV, instead of casting 20 somethings in shows like 13 reasons why that look like they belong on a cover of a Vogue Magazine. because it sends out the image of having to look perfect at that age which leads to teens obssessing about looks. It'd also be nice if screenwriters talked to highschoolers about what high school is like and how teenagers act because they've obviously forgotten.

blackham7 I don’t particularly like that trope but tv is an industry and runs on money. The truth is that there are so many restrictions on minors working on tv shows (mainly the hours that they can work) it saves money and is so much more convenient to hire someone over 18. I have some links if you want to research this more: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/broadly.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/evgzvj/inside-the-phenomenon-of-grown-adults-playing-teenagers-on-tv www.backstage.com/news/backstage-kids/understanding-union-rules-and-labor-laws-child-actors/ labor.ny.gov/formsdocs/wp/LS559.pdf

I totally agree with you. And to add on, producers and directors can also get away with a lot when they’re working with adults over kids as high schoolers, in terms of “sex scenes” and other mature topics. It would be really awkward and gross to watch minors act out those scenes, but with adults, we don’t even question it.

I agree, for the first two episodes. They were trying very hard to establish a fun cliché cast and plot and genuinely had a few slip-ups. As for the rest of the episodes, it seems like they were trying to show what would really happen if you took the flat, awful characters from something like Thirteen Going on Thirty and just let them bounce off eachother for 7 more hours of screentime: crimes, murder, pregnancy scares, casual abandonment, and all-too-realistically, no consequences. Those episodes were bad because the characters were bad, not because of its eclectic plot, but because of the actual errors that were present from the beginning.

Yea exactly. I'll defend Insatiable from the people saying it was problematic or fat-shaming or "setting a bad example" because it was none of those things. But I can't defend it as a well written satire either. I watched the whole series because it was like watching a car accident happen in slow motion. It's an _interesting_ show, but not for good reasons. It got SO predictable to the point where if anything mildly positive started to happen to a character it was just a game to figure out how many _seconds_ it would take for it to go completely wrong. You can't base your ENTIRE dark comedy off of one continuous "if it's getting good, it's gunna go bad" trope. Some storylines felt really forced too. Like the end where Patty plans to kidnap that whats-her-face pageant girl but gets reversed(?) kidnapped. Like not only was Patty given a chance to abandon her petty behavior and go be with her friends but also HOW did Stella Rose and whats-her-face pageant girl _know_ that Patty was going to go after her? Like everything bad that happened to Patty was her own fault, and she never came to realize that. Satire doesn't mean the characters can't have development or self-awareness.

One more thing I'll never understand about shows and movies centered around massive weightloss stories is how they never mention the loose skin. They never even acknowledge that it's a thing. I've gone from 245 to 145 and now sit at 155lb. I have loose skin on my belly, my back, my arms and my chest. Those are areas that fat people with body image issues often focus on because it's where the fat or lack of definition is most apparent. It's a source of insecurity for most of us and to have gone through the whole weightloss, when I originally anticipated to have my dream body afterwards, as naive as that might've been, to have a new onslaught of body imperfections in the exact same area exist because of my results is now a brand new source of body image issues. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario a lot of people never get out of.

And don't forget actors who actually fit the part. Y'know if a movie is about 15y/o i hate it when they bring these 27y/o actors like how hard is to find an actor who is 14-17 or someone who actually looks like they could be 15. Daniel Iredia Neither is Mean Girls or Heathers, get those are both movies that I love. My issues with the show have nothing to do with realism. In order to have the audience root for a character, they have to relate to that character. Not only that, but the plot also has to make sense. Even completely fictional and fantasy like shows, such as Supernatural or Once Upon a Time, have structure and reason to the plot and actually have characters who you can root for. Even though those shows may have their own issues, they're much more enjoyable to watch.

you know as someone who's had their jaw broken and wired shut to repair it, you really don't lose that much weight. I only lost around 10 kg (22lbs), and I know that that's something most likely very specific to my metabolism, but every time I see the trailer I can't help but think that that kind of weight loss is insane to call realistic.

Yeah, that's so fucking crazy. Like, not eating causes your metabolism to SLOW DOWN, so it's not that fucking helpful. If she started exercising, being more active, and eating better, that would help... but, you know, that has nothing to do with having your jaw wired shut. One would assume that you'd be less likely to start a work-out regimen than more due to having your jaw wired shut. It's fucking crazy that amount of bad information there is out there about how to lose weight and get in shape. I mean, it's largely common sense - be active, eat better - but there's nuance to it - like eat *better* not *less* - that gets glossed over. I guess they think it's not the point, so let's just speed past it... and, sure, I understand that argument, but why break the immersion of the show when you could just make it more realistic?

Jonathan S satire can be whatever the writer wants it to be. It’s not a one-way street, sweetie. I liked the show; I can admit, the story was all over the place and was a bit predictable , but it was clearly satire, taking tropes and running with them, but shining light on the bad and making fun of them too. As a gay man watching the show, I didn’t bitch and moan that the gay men weren’t “representative” as me of a person, because my sexuality isn’t my personality. I watched it to see where it would go. It was FAST PACED and I enjoyed seeing the characters grow. Debby Ryan’s character follows the “character you love to hate” because she thinks she can be redeemed for all the shitty things she does because she has had it bad”, when in reality, that never justifies anything that anyone does (rationally). It’s an unrealistic satire with realistic consequences.
@jons787
@jons787 4 года назад
Sebastian Anderson “X can be whatever the writer wants it to be” is just another way of telling someone to be quiet and ignore the effects of a work on people hurt by it, in favor of a writer’s nebulous intent and the more privileged fans who don’t want to have to care about something being problematic. (Of course YMMV due to intersectionality.)

It’s not that satire has to be anvilicious or obvious. Subtlety can be quite stinging, but having fun with X is awfully close to secretly enjoying X or thinking X is no big deal. And thinking X is amusing and no big deal is a trap that many privileged outsiders to the realities of X regularly fall into.

"It was satire" is the standard response that horrible people use to try and excuse being horrible. Thanks to fans of certain programs that will not be named, it has almost become a cliche' to try and get away with any kind of mean-spirited insult, gross mischaracterization, or outright bullying of a particular class of people by resorting to "it was satire, you just didn't get the joke". That's why claims of "satire" have become extremely popular with neo-nazis and their ilk. It's a convenient smoke screen that allows them to express their true feelings while avoiding social sanctions for their behaviour. Satire does not "have fun" with antisocial behaviours like misogyny, racism, or homophobia/transphobia; it attacks them, either blatantly or subtly, by demonstrating them to be undesirable through the use of recontextualizing said behaviours, and indirectly portraying some form of negative consequences for the person engaging in or encouraging those behaviours. "Having fun" with antisocial behaviours is just normalizing them, not satirizing them. Lampshading racism, misogyny, homo/transphobia, etc. doesn't magically turn it into satire, it's just a cheap tactic to avoid repercussions for being openly racist, misogynyst, homo/transphobic, etc. Self-awareness isn't satire, it's just an excuse.

idk how many writers this show has, but i can tell that it has the symptoms of a writing team that wants to get all their ideas in, but can't make the appropriate sacrifices which would allow the story to flow logically with it's "narrative". Same thing happened in the show to where once she was open to the world as well as herself, she still had a major crush on me for a long time but she learned how to handle it thus being able to move on & be happy. My newfound happiness, however, really came from the fact that I am no longer the butt of some jokes, and that I can now fit in with certain groups. What if, instead, we respect people and accept them no matter their weight or attractiveness? There are some people who genuinely couldn't make the same journey we did, and for them, they're stuck in that cycle of bullying and silent judgement with no way to escape it, and we both know how much that situation sucks.

This is probably one of the best reviews for this terrible show ever. I love how you made the distinction between evil characters and unlikable characters. Walter White is still one of personal favorites as an incredibly sympathetic yet unambiguously evil man. Disney villains like Scar from the Lion King or Frollo from Hunchback of Notre Dame are both iconic bad guys where you can kind of see where they were coming from yet their actions are unjustifiably wicked at the same time. And yes, show the audience who the characters are. Inner monologues are one of the most commonly abused devices to get a character's motives and intentions across and this show is yet another one that does just that. Not that there's any actual "characters" in the show -- everyone acts like a fucking cartoon or caricature, kind of like in Glee. No-one in the show is remotely realistic so there's no impact to whatever horrible thing they do. Like you said, this could've been remedied with some growth but nope, nobody ever grows or learns anything through the course of the first season. Them being awful human beings could've been remedied if they were funny or likable like The Gang from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia but nope.

The voiceover problem reminds me of a problem in comics, when the caption boxes explain exactly what is going on in the panels. For example, you have an image of a character looking upset, and the caption box says "This news upset Jane Doe greatly."

I am sure they wanted it to be this way. And I personally don‘t think this means the audience is considered „stupid“ or like it needed someone to explain what is happening.

honestly the show isn't as problematic as people have made it out to be. it definitely is somewhat problematic but the main issue is the bad writing and the fact that they don't know how to achieve the goals they had when they came up with their ideas. The show has a subtle dark comedy of realism in it. Its not for the faint of heart that cant take dark comedy. I found it quit entertaining. Only a true pessimistic and sadist would enjoy the show. There was subtle narrative of dont route for patty bc she mental ill and very manipulative. Now a days kids and teens care more about action blow ups and character stereotypes and thats mostly the adults fault for raising kids who think like that. These shows like 13 reason , insatiable , etc have some series matters in them but the kids there geared to dont really care about that ( look at the emoji movies) that movie was made for this new generations. Again I dont think its really the show runners fault when all there doing is making shows geared to the most normal kids of today standard. Most kids today dont know how to read by 5th grade. Most kids today have iphones by the time there 10. These show are geard for poeple you dont have respect or empathy and are in the own little world. I think some of the writing is bad. but like I said. It kind of gives me hope that kids and teens are going 9 the writing bad) bc the show like I said is geared toward that mindless attitude of today standard of teaching.

trashyjulia ok just as a gay person, the GBF trope is really gross, like that’s all patties best friend is. That’s all she’s characterized by, and seriously they have not one but three characters that say “oh being obsessed with your best friend is normal.” Which is NOT what we do when we like someone. Like oh boy. I could go on but a lot of people have talked about it.
@wisewillow7530

Well just as a panasexual person how is having a friend gay gross. I understand that its a torpe that used alot but its not gross. And thats not all patties friend is. She acts as Pattys moral compass, as us looking into the show from an outward angel.Seeing her from a different perspective. Also she isnt the only type of lgbtq representation in the show. There are many more healthy ones. No one said being obsessed with your friend is normal. This girl had an unhealthy love for her friend and was in denial about a lot of things. its not gross to love your friend as long as it doesn't get into that obsessed feature. They even go out of there way to show her girlfriend telling her that what she was like with patty was bad behavior. Also the only person who said the obsession was good was pattys ( narcissistic alcoholic emotional abuses mother) If you take the word and base your facts on a women like that than I pity your judgment.

WiseWillow it’s not that a gay best friend is gross it’s the idea that’s all a gay person can be. Obviously, that’s what I was talking about, I mean that it’s the idea that a character is only characterized by their sexuality and that’s it. That’s what Noni is characterized as, a gay person that’s her character she’s not a person she’s just a sexuality and that’s the problem with the trope.
@carrastealth
@carrastealth 6 лет назад
9:00 It's clear what Nonnie is talking about, was clear to me anyway. She's talking about how things are different now. It's not that Patty doesn't care, it's that Patty doesn't seem to understand that it effects Nonnie that she is in love with her. And that changes their dynamic. Patty may "not care" that Nonnie is Gay. But Nonnie is hurting for different reasons and scared for different reasons. It wasn't about her sexuality in that moment as it was about the actual fact and reality that she's in love with her(Patty) and Patty didn't seem to understand why that changes things after she admitted it. She figured nothing had to change cause "she didn't care". But it goes deeper than that, and Nonnie was letting her have it for not thinking about why she (Nonnie) would still be effected by the reality of being in love with her and knowing she can't reciprocate those feeling, and why things would still be different between them and that their innocent naive moments can't be innocent anymore. The crux of it was also that Nonnie had just been asked out by another girl that said she gave off a "vibe" as in a "gay vibe" and Nonnie freaked out, because she is in love with Patty and never thought about anyone else and there was kind of a comfort there. Especially when the cat was still in the bag. But that comfort zone is pretty much ended once Nonnie admitted her feelings for Patty and she has to emotionally deal with that, and she didn't feel like Patty was understanding that side of things and that hurt her worse. Did she give Patty enough time to adjust? Nope, but she was confused and hurt. Especially given the fact she was finally coming to terms with her own sexuality an episode before. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tUvPTdmkVqY.html Which was actually a really good scene I felt. But she "finally" was starting to figure out what she wanted, and finally accept that she was gay, so much so she gave off a 'gay vibe" according to a girl that had just asked her out which is why she started freaking out, and this entire situation was taking a toll on her. Hence her being mad that Patty didn't seem to take the time to level what she was emotionally going through. Because to Patty, it was okay cause she didn't care if Nonnie was gay and that would make things alright. But it's not that simple, her opinion of Nonnie's sexuality isn't the be all and end all of what Nonnie feeling and going through. That was the point I believe. I thought that scene was pretty clear about that.

To be honest, Bojack Horseman works precisely because you can still relate to the characters, even when they're being awful. Also the characters are not *uniformly* awful people so even when Bojack is being a complete cringeworthy dick, you have a lighter character like Todd who you can genuinely enjoy watching. And, most importantly, characters face consequences for their actions and the show itself makes it clear that the awful behaviour they engage in *is* awful behaviour. To be honest, I can't really say I like BH as a show because the show as a whole is just too unrelentingly nihilistic, but it definitely has "bad people but likeable characters done right" down.

I know, most of the controversy was sparked due to them hiring a skinny actress to wear a fat suit. The showrunners defended its use, saying that it was easier to have a skinny actor "bulk up" than to get a heavier actor to shed some more pounds. While that is true, at least we're not supposed to find "Fatty Patty" funny in the same way as "Fat Monica" from "Friends" or "Fat Amy" from "Pitch Perfect".

I think insatiable would’ve been more interesting if instead of getting smaller- she stays the same. That her character grows from sweet to sour and starts standing up for herself from her bullies. But this is the problem ! Honestly, how many "fake" disabled people do you know ? With storylines like this, people are more inclined to believe in this stuff and harass disabled people who, let's say, get out of their wheelchair to close their car's door, because they're able to walk for a few steps. They'll believe it way more because they'll think we do it for the "attention" or for "money" or whatever, just like in "this tv show" or "this movie". Maybe they think it's funny or they're bringing light to something, but it's not the case. If the girl was really disabled and the protagonist realized that and apologized or whatever, it could have been different.

I couldn’t quite put my finger on what bothered me about this show (aside from how they portray lesbians) and you laid it all out for me. That’s exactly it. But I do have a question: the woman who falsely accuses Bob of child molestation is revealed to be sleeping with his son at the end of episode two. Is anything done regarding the double standards/hypocrisy on this issue (ie. how we react to a man molesting an underage girl vs. a woman molesting an underage boy)? I imagine you would’ve mentioned it if they had, but I was curious how they dealt with it. I also found it strange that Patty is suddenly very sexual after she loses weight- not that she’s sexualized, but that she behaves in a sexual manner. If she has absolutely no experience with this, how does she automatically know how to seduce and vamp it up? Seems unrealistic.

Caitriona Quigley the show is satire, though (i’m not defending it because for other reasons it sucks😂) so the jokes are meant to be stupid and tasteless. the characters are, on purpose, meant to do the dumbest things possible, but debby ryan also sucks at acting and the show has the dumbest scenes that aren’t supposed to be satire...
@trinaq
@trinaq 6 лет назад
+caj014 That's true, but a lot of the movies I enjoy (namely "Heathers", "Mean Girls", even "Wayne's World"!) also satirize or exaggerate situations for comedic effect, but in those cases, the protagonist usually has a redeeming quality or grows in such a way that you root for them to succeed in their goals and become better people. "Insatiable" offers no such of an arc for their characters, and as outlined, they don't seem to ever learn from their mistakes. If your leads have no likeable traits that offset their previous awful actions, then why should we care about what happens to them?
@sher919a

+caj014 Yes, I can give them some credit for not expecting us to laugh at Patty when she's "Fatty Patty", and for some genuinely moving moments, mainly involving Nonnie questioning her sexuality. But the problem lies more in the strained acting, and the lack of subtlety, and the over reliance on voiceovers as exposition.

I don't believe the show does any of the things you mention, it certainly does not place a positive light on fat shaming or molestation. If anything it rightfully shames the characters who are fat shaming, and makes it a point to emphasize how outer beauty is meaningless without inner beauty.

I liked the show and you’re completely right on everything it’s not actually a GOOD show, 😂 I liked it was because it was BAD and all over the place. I think the reason the other characters are unexplored because the two main characters only really care about themselves and we’re supposed to see things from their perspective. It’s like a cautionary tale, you watch patty ruin her life over and over again.

right! I saw a video similar to this on Alex Meyers channel, and I thought "oh, I'll never watch this" it was advertised to me on netflix a bunch and I was like "okay, fine, just one episode" but I got hooked on how hilariously bad and wacky this show is. After half the episodes I was like "wtf is this show?!" laugh about it, wonder why I was watching it and then go back for another episode.

I feel as though there is a disconnect here especially in regards to Patty. The narration of Patty especially is to show how quickly she changes her mind, jumps to conclusions and gains these terrible ideas. Patty is a awful person she is not supposed to be an avatar for the viewer, she’s a bad person who doesn’t learn from her mistakes and is extremely selfish, you are not supposed to relate or feel bad for her or expect her to grow she is mentally unhinged. This show is not about personal growth. This show’s characters are not supposed to be relatable. This show is not supposed to make you sympathize or empathize. The handling of Nonnie I agree is especially rough in the beginning. The handling of bisexuality as well was..... fine? Armstrong IS bisexual Barnard is bisexual but homoromantic. The line that was said is ignorance sure but Armstrong is literally bisexual. He identifies bisexual. He doesn’t turn gay or straight. The trans woman who may have appeared in just one episode was treated with respect and dignity especially in regards to dysphoria. The plot is supposed to be over the top. Not every show is supposed to have a moral or a message. The constant change of the plot is supposed to be reflective off of the main character who is a unhinged person. The lack of consistency is the only thing that is consistent. That is the point of the plot. I almost feel as though we didn’t watch the same thing.

A lot of her analysis is like that. I would have liked it better, if it had been a different show.

Veronica Vazquez Thank you! Listening to this chick I’m reminded of a story a well known movie reviewer told once. They were doing some press junket for a Batman movie Michael Keaton starred in back in the day, and one reporter started off on this long winded, pompous question when Keaton cut him off saying, “You know what, it’s just a fucking movie.” Unlike this chick - YOU get it.

if the show isn't supposed to make me sympathize or empathize (ergo, i don't care about any of the characters), why should i watch it?
