As a Bentley owner for over 20 years in New Zealand I found this video very informative and was impressed by the technican, having owned 4 flying spurs, they are very expensive vehicle to own due to tight engine bays, my last bill was over $15000, engine out for vacuum hoses,front suspension etc, this will be the last flying spur and w12 car that I will own they are getting older, so higher costs due to parts getting harder to get.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video, and the mechanic certainly seemed to know his onions. I have had mixed fortunes with Bentley ownership, ranging from almost bankrupting me with one 6.75 Arnage to a faultless 4.4 Arnage. I recently took the decision I will no longer drive 'expensive' cars as the pleasure is outweighed by the worry of the next big bill, and I figured I had better things to do with my money. Nonetheless if you are looking to buy a Bentley I strongly suggest you do your homework, find one with a F/S/H, find a good independent (I used Starman's of Nottingham) have 'Flying Spares' on speed dial on your phone, and brace yourself for the warning noise of a problem every time you start her up. If you get a good one you will be rewarded beyond your wildest (car) dreams Get a bad one and......OUCH!

Owned a W140 S320 Mercedes with the silky smooth straight 6 engine for over 10 years, put a LOT of miles on her and hardly spent a penny on her..2 new front springs, 4 x new discs & pads and a set of wipers. All OEM (as I have done with every Merc I have owned). I had absolutely no worries about taking her on any journey, no matter how far that may be. The driving experience for a car its age was way better than a comparable aged Rolls/Bentley (tried them too) and I didn't have the worry of HUGE bills hanging over me, it was just soooo reliable. Sold her for over 3 and a half times what I paid for her too👍🏻👍🏻😁

Another terrific video about your Bentley Flying Spur. While 144,000 miles on a W12 should not be considered "high" -- that is the common observation. Maybe half life? Most buyers say if you want to buy a used 2005-2020 Flying Spur you should find one that has no more than 50,000 mi and 2 owners. Also, If the editor is reading this -- wish you would heed the advice of many comments in the last video. The music is distracting and not necessary when people are talking. Keep up the excellent work!
@wilsjane

The problem these days, is the emissions requirements. EGR clogs everything up with crud and the accuracy needed for valve timing has led to complex plastic tensioners that fail. Both require major work on VW engines. My old Audi A6, with the original V6 engine did 300,000 miles with no problems, while a friends later model required a complete engine stripdown at 160,000 miles.

I love Bentleys but it does surprise me, allowing for fair wear & tear, how many issues arise on them and often very expensive to fix. I have run several cars from new other than a Bentley (not luxury cars in all cases) and not had the kind of issues arise. Currently I am at 70K miles from new on a Jaguar XJ Autobiography and it has been impeccable - just normal servicing only. Cars are cars but Bentley's as they age can be a tad expensive to run putting stuff right. That all said this video is very informative.

I live in Australia and lots of people here can afford these Bentleys even though they are very expensive here. However there are always heap of used ones for sale and some very cheap. If they are about 15 years old then they can sell for about the same price of a Bentley Arnage which is about ten years older. When I was pricing a used Arnage I couldn't find many, but found 5 pages of Contenentals. I have noted that many prople just don't recognise them as they did the older Bentleys. Even I will often miss them because they just don't stand out. Is that why some people like them?

@michaelmontagu3979
@michaelmontagu3979 Месяц назад
Absolutely agree with you about keeping these cars properly maintained. The problem starts when the price is low enough to appeal to those who can afford the price but not the maintenance. Then they really decline. I've owned a 1965 Silver Cloud III, as just the second owner, since 1982. The previous owner kept it well and so have I. It's my daily drive and it's only had one major fault, the cylinder head gasket. The advantage of the old cars is that they are mechanical not electronic, so any good mechanic can look after them.

@mbishton

I can absolutely assure this was the case. I was shocked too. You’re right, it is usually the other way around but I think some “specialists” are used to handing out big invoices to customers and saying “well don’t drive an expensive car to fix if you can’t afford to run it” when this doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. Always free to ask a main agent for an estimate rather than just run to your nearest “specialist” as often main agents have a discounted labour rate for older models.

Beautiful car to look at and drive BUT a massive money pit that grows deeper with every drive and day. These cars are engineered to fall apart whether its the poor quality of engine parts or the amount of electrics semi conductors used the sheer plastic overuse in engine compartment along with the heat causes failures continuously. Does not matter if it is German French British cars, once a car is sold only way to recoup money is through repairs or servicing. Thats why its very difficult to service the car yourself or your by trusted mechanic (if there is such a thing) because the over engineering and complexity of getting to a relay tucked inside engine bay requires you take it to dealers who charge astronomical fees....

Many patterned parts are made by quality approved well known brands such as Fram AC etc from ECP etc, at a much cheaper price, brake fluid is recommended !! for change at two years because it can absorb water which can cause corrosion in the ABS unit, BUT any specialist should have a device to check brake fluid for water, with the cap on its not easy to get water in the reservoir, but some condensation may ? happen, my Mercedes specialist charged me £20 to check after three years and it was perfect, a money making scheme, but worth checking, remember many car manufactures use well known brands such as Brembo ATE etc and put in their branded box at twice + the price.
