Hope you enjoyed this one going to squeeze in a few more NRL videos before the season ends if you want to know my thoughts on the NRL sin bin situation at the moment watch this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nWWsPWKcq5k.html&ab_channel=ALPHA
Need to do something about the forward passes, there have been some absolute howlers that have gone through to the keeper. I wouldn't want to see us go down the same path as the EPL with the VAR technology but when it's clearly forward then I think the bunker should be able to rule on it
Union can adjudicate on forward passes, so why cant NRL? I hear that technology has been the excuse for the last 20 years. NFL use cameras to identify the feet gained per down down to the inch. It cant be that hard.
I agree that the bunker needs less input, but if that is going to be the case people need to understand that the referees will be making decisions that they only see once in real time, so if the bunker's power was to become limited we need to lessen our blame on referee decisions. It will create a more flowing game with more likeliness of slight referee errors which is better i think. I also think players that milk head high penalties should automatically be forced to go off for HIA, if their head hurts that bad then they should go off to be checked i reckon.
I do like your loan idea I think it will bring in a lot more talent into the league. When a player is playing like his career is on the line the you see a different kind of hunger.
Fantastic video man. The draft system you suggested is easily the most sound idea put forward in how to equally spread the talent. I'd have no problem in shortening the season. The loan system certainly can't stay at the current August 1st cut off date. Must be June 30. I love the thought that if you are of a certain age and have played 50 1st grade games or over you probably shouldn't be considered. I think cuts alot of controversy out of the equation. I think the captains challenge imo should be on the verge of being turfed altogether limiting stoppages and bunker involvements. Again man this is a great video.
The scores became blow-outs from round 23 onwards cause the bottom 6 teams already gave up. The scorelines before that 72-6 rout were actually competitive most of the time.
The gulf in class between top 8 teams and bottom 8 teams have been there for years, Look at the 98 NRL season as an example the bottom 2 teams finished on 8 points and if you ignore the Panthers dominance of this year the points are very similair. Also in terms of teams getting blown away if you look at the Points differentials for the same season there are similarities there as well. So statistically the comp hasn't seen a greater gap in class compared to 20 years ago.
Great video. Just a couple of comments: 1. Draft - Dennis Tutty, Terry Hill and the RLPA make it near impossible, even if it would be good for the game as a while. 2. Agree that late season loans need to go
Loan system - Loans are fine, but only from much earlier in the season. Maybe have a round 12 cutoff (half way). Draft - Only thing I don't like about the draft idea is that some players have always dreamed of playing for a certain club, they've come up through the juniors and have passion for just that club. We should be giving people a chance to stick with the club they love (as long as the club wants them too, of course). Draft Pick Order - Not sure why the "best of the bottom 8" should get first pick. Surely the one struggling the most should go first.
Subscribed and liked. Really loved the video. Honestly would be great to get the same break down but of Rugby instead. It's in a interesting state with penalties at the moment.
Player loans can’t be restricted by age or games played because that doesn’t account for those who have played the minimum number of games to qualify but have largely played NSW or QLD cup, players returning from absences or players who are regularly named on the bench but get very few minutes at NRL level.
I don't think a draft will work as it doesn't address the true issue. The issue isn't spreading the playing talent, the issue is the poor systems in place in the lower grades and the lack of coaching talent. This is proven when fringe and average players are turned into superstars when they go to teams like the Storm, while top players disappear into obscurity after going to teams like the Tigers. Forcing young talent to go to teams that have a track record or ruining players will only ruin that kids career. There is plenty of talent out there, but it needs to be properly nurtured to turn players with potential into stars. The NRL should be looking at a way to help train young coaches and find ways to help the knowledge from the top teams make its way to the bottom teams. Regarding the video ref, it should only be allowed to rule on groundings and knock ons in try scoring situations with all replays done at full speed, no slow-mo. No interfering with the game. If the ref misses it, the ref misses it
The one time we needed the bunker to revert a try because of a forward pass, they couldn't do shit. Definitely agree with the captain's challenge system and restricting the bunker. It would make the game flow alot more and stop their rediuclous analysis on plays every 5mins.
I agree with all your points, and I love the idea of a play off for the draft pick, but I just don’t think it would solve the tanking issue. You would then have teams who know they aren’t going to play finals try and get 13th so they have a chance at #1. And you would also be rewarding technically the best team out of the worst with the best player, which isn’t what the draft should be solving more times than not. Titans for example would not of finished the season 3-1. Maybe a way to keep the area code development but also have a draft is maybe you can earn more money by entering the draft. Your contract can be bigger but the extra money wouldn’t be put against the salary cap until a new deal is made. That could have people choose if they want to stay in their area and development teams or make a bit more money and potentially move elsewhere.
Instead of a draft system how about cutting down the number of teams in the NRL then introduce a tier of rugby league below the NRL and implement a regulation system so teams in the NRL have a reason to be competitive at the end of the season thoughts?
Also, totally agree on the draft. With a salary capped league and a much smaller player pool than union, you either need pro/rel or a draft and given NRL is in Australia I'd go with draft.
The bunker should definitely be used less. They interfere with and often overule the on field ref's decisions. Players shouldn't be able to stay down waiting for the bunker to give them a penalty. If the player wants a penalty, it should cost them a challenge. The challenges should also be more black and white.. the players often challenge stuff that not been ruled by the ref. Like, if the ref hasn't called a knock on ect.. then there's no ruling to be challenged. Great video, hard to see the draft system happening any time soon, but I definitely agree that it could balance out the teams and make for a more fair and interesting competition.
I’m a new NRL fan, formerly an AFL follower. The AFL changes the rules more than I change my sheets. Now they are heavily promoting the ladies game which is comparable to under tens in skill but without the fitness and agility of the under tens. Look at what AFL is doing and do the opposite.
in my opinion the NRL needs two competitions or a relegation and promotion system. NRL LEVEL 1 (12 teams) bottom 3 teams get relegated NRL LEVEL 2 (12 or maybe more teams) top 3 teams get promoted to LEVEL 1 (no relegations unless if NRL LEVEL 3 happens) all teams need to have the same budget (it can be 10 or 20 or 30M) (budget is also based on what level you are) so we don't get teams that dominate the whole comps 20 rounds happen and the top 6 or 5 teams make the finals (if it's top 5 the minor premieres get a bye to the next week of the finals) loans can happen and all teams have a development academy.
1: uphold contracts if you sign for a term you stay no more upgrading crap there’s no such thing as a club doing a good deal on a player anymore . 2: bunker can only intervene on try scoring plays if foul play is missed by the referee so be it 3: inside the 10 off scrums . Attacking captain should have the choice to repack it if the defending team is offside again a player goes for 10 . 4: driving hate seeing attacking players joining the tackle to stop momentum it’s not union and should be illegal 5: the ability for 2 players per club be signed up outside of the cap this allows teams to not have to ruin the cap because they’ve had to overpay . 6: the judiciary needs a massive overhaul and consistency
For me, get rid of the 6-again - so often I am wondering what it was for. I think the original thought behind it was sound, but the implementation has been poor. The Bunker was original meant to only be there to rule on tries. The fact that they cannot rule on forward passes is an area that needs to be fixed. Like everything where humans are involved to interpret rules with technology, it is open to interpretation meaning mistakes happen. The more things they allow the bunker to rule on the more mistakes will happen, but hopefully things can improve. Great channel btw
the one thing the bunker should have an input on id the forward passes there have been some shockers recently and even the commentators say it was forward yet a try is awarded most of the time.
I heard they are brining in a ball that can detect forward passes, I wouldn’t mind that. Also 2 refs back on the field and no bunker on live plays. Also I think the 6 again rule is kind of broken, the refs have enough on their plate and not sure if it’s confirmation bias but I always feel it’s not applied equally to 2 teams. It’s a penalty or it’s play on
Great video. I'm really getting put off the fact that you can whack someone in the head and get away with with, for example with how Nelson Asofa-Solomona broke Wayde Egan's jaw yet didn't even get a suspension from it which was absoultely disgusting. If you hit someone in the head, it should be an automatic sin bin with deliberate/dangerous head contact being a straight send off, this would hopefully minimise the amount of head contact in the game and get some consistantcy with the sin bin rule. I like your idea of the loan system, but I'd modifiy it to allow those who aren't playing first grade regularly or out of favour to go out on loan, for example in 2016 it would've allowed Robbie Farah to contiune playing NRL with another NRL team as he was out of favour with the Tigers at the time.
In my opinion, after a try has been scored the bunker should be allowed to confirm the try, unless the referee has aked for help, also you can actually challenge a try, so if all the players believe this is a try, the bunker should not interfear with this. Also you should be able to challenge forwards passes if you can challenge knock-ons. Just a few things the NRL needs to fix with the bunker.👍
My 2 cents 1. NRL needs a national reserve grade comp and national under 21s comp. 2. Reward clubs salary cap discounts for retaining/signing local juniors. 3. Raise minimum salary, pay for a win, less for a loss. 4. Get rid of 6 again rule please. 5. Scrap bunker except for try scoring situations. 6. I'd like to see 3-4 grades of internationals on same day/same ground, eg schoolboys, junior kangaroos, kangaroos, televised.
Yes teams like Penrith are punished with this dam salary cap. They produce and invest in juniors then they lose them. Should be a discount cap for invested juniors
There's to much grey area in Th rules where it left up to a ref's interpretation. The rules need to be black and white to avoid confusion and to prevent to possible chance of bias from a ref. It also doesn't help when certain teams get have life members if the club ref there games or be in the bunker. Surely the nrl can have ref's that don't have ties to club reffering the games.
I think something the NRL should consider is if they want to do so many sin bins in the modern game then they should have it similar to NHL’s rules. Keep it as being down a man for 10 minutes but as soon as you concede you can have your player back on. That way the team that committed foul play are still penalised but aren’t also made fatigued. It would also make the ref more likely to do a sin bin for foul play in a big game as all the penalty would be is a try, not an onslaught.
The problems with league - It's repetitive, which is really bad from a spectacle PoV - When the players are at a loss for what to do, they just throw it around hoping for something random to happen - You don't actually get anything beneficial out of being at a live regular season game as opposed to watching it on TV because all the action is concentrated into the 10m (or 20m-ish, depending on whether you count the zooming out of the camera) zone of the play the ball, so you can get all that action on TV - Only the SoO matches are any half decent matches
There should be relegation for the bottom 4 teams of the nrl and they drop to interest super cup and the top four teams for the interest cup go to the NRL. This would drive competitiveness in the competition.
Hell no, not a draft. It kills the junior bases, local investment and connections that clubs have. Look at the AFL. And the AFL still has massive gaps between top and bottom teams. Second division with promotion relegation is the way to go, and allows expansion of the league for much cheaper. 1 nrl teams salary cap can cover 5 second division team caps.
Players will just break the contract when they have a good season like reece walsh. Give the teams that finish near bottom 2-3 extra players in their squad the following year. It wont drastically improve them but its clean simple and fair
it makes 0 sense what so ever on why the bunker can't call a forward pass??? would of stopped the moses forward pass try that everyone saw but bunker couldn't call it. why is that a thing? there is zero reason why that makes sense
I love the draft suggestion but the NRL has no interest in more international games because $. My other problem with your proposed format is you could still end up with a bottom rung, for example this year you'd have the tigers titans and dogs all with absolutely no chance in a bottom 8 competition when they're most desperately in need of help.
Limiting the games in a season won't stop the bad teams from playing bad when their season is over. Unfortunately teams don't play for pride (certainly not the Manly 7) anymore, as seen by the Tigers woeful last game at home with their captains last game. We had 20 rounds in 2020 and we still had blow-outs. It really didn't fix it. The draft has all sorts of intricacies to deal with. The obvious one is tanking if based on ladder position. Where do the players come from? There's no separate development system like college football, so if clubs are to do it, there'll be complaining about teams losing juniors they're developing to the draft, which is already happening with the current system, so it really doesn't resolve anything. Not all clubs do develop players and most likely the clubs that do will be worse off. The player hold thing could work in theory, but we saw last year, people claiming clubs were holding back development of their players by keeping them away. Lastly, the draft tournament is a cool concept and would certainly be entertaining, I just don't see it working I'm afraid. The bottom 9 next year are most likely not going to care about a draft, especially the players leaving their current club. There is no real incentive to help a team that either you want to leave or has got rid of you, once the season is over. All players want to win a comp and I just don't see a draft pick being incentive enough for them to care. All in all, there is no perfect solution. I absolutely agree there needs to be a change, but how that looks is anyone's guess. The salary cap doesn't work because it's not being implemented the way it should. Players want to win comps and they'll go to whoever is their best chance and unfortunately it's the same teams.
I personally stopped watching NRL 4 years ago and just watch state of origin now. There's too many rule changes that don't make the game better, too many pretty boys that haven't worked a day in their life playing a working class game and too much emphasis on making the coked up corporates happy. It isn't the game I grew up loving anymore.
I love these suggestions, on the bunker I have a different take. 1. The bunker can be used, for clear penalties I.e. forward passes, where it's very hard to catch every one by the on field refs. 2. Stop disallowing tries on the tiniest infringement. I saw a game where they disallowed a try after 20 replays because the ball grazed past someone's forearm. If it takes you 20 replays just stop and give the try. 3. The ref's need far more scrutiny on what is fair. I saw a game and I will name and shame, the storm kept holding every single tackle against the broncos. And the Broncos caught wind started doing the same and got repeatedly penalised. No one can enjoy a game if they don't feel the ref's are fair. 4. This may be controversial but why the fuck is the captains challenge 10 second rule in place, when the replays take longer to show. Although the NRL would say 'quick games a good game" I have seen plenty of instances where the ref made an obvious bad call game play hasn't resumed yet but the captain didn't see the replay until it was too late. And by that point it was oh well play on. That happens at least once per game.
A big issue are these forward passes. Linesmen too scared to make calls on forward passes which is half their job. No proper technology implemented in detecting forward passes.
yeah, bunkers should only be involved if a challenge has been thrown, bunker should also have people that have went to specsavers in there with them watching the same thing they are since they blind AF. I also reckon with the amount of milking now adays, if a player was caught milking and not actually hurt like the fergo incident with liam martin, milking team should be penalised for false claims. Or if anyone was hit by a "crusher tackle" they need to be off the field asap for 15 minutes for check up, lets see how many necks will be grabbed afterwards LOLOL
Awesome vid brother I’m liking this talk about the NRL. But you know them old farts sitting back in there rich meetings won’t change for the better, there to greedy and wouldn’t allow it. Maybe focus peoples ideas onto the footy show and the matty jones show to see if it gains some attention. This does need attention we don’t want to lose our kids good talents and let every other sport get ahead of our footy even more by the year.
Need to being back reserve grade and under 21s. The golden age of the 70s and 80s... the depth of each club would grow as well as player well fair. Get rid of the bunker all together. Referee ref the game. And since gambling became a major sponsor the game has a stigma of corruption....
Your draft system doesn't account for a 17th team next year. Regardless, I think there's a way more simplier way to fix the game. The draw. 17 teams. 24 games each, 1 bye. Verse everyone once and for the remaining 8 games 2 from last year's top 4, 2 from last year's 5-8 and so on... Furthermore each team is given a difficulty rating. Eg last year's 16th (or 17th moving forward) is given 1 point. 1 extra point given for a team for each position higher on the ladder. There should be a minimum and maximum amount of difficulty points given in a 6 week period. This would stop situations like this year when doggies (2021 spooners) played last year's top 4, 4 weeks in a row.
Some of these forward passes need to be called out,JUST CAUSE IT LOOKS COOL,MAKES THE HIGHLIGHT REELS,,GET THE CLICKS BAITS ND SELLS TICKETS,It doesn't mean a forward pass Ain't a forward pass...
also the refs should be favouring there calls to lower ranked teams and not top 8 teams todd payten mentioned this twiice this season round 4 and round 19
A drafting system is a bit unfair. Think of clubs like the panthers who have invested so much time and money in their young talent and junior systems just for them to get stolen by other clubs
Melbourne used the loan system as it was intended? They picked up a player that was stuck in 2nd grade & wasn't playing NRL & compensated the other team fairly? The tigers weren't playing David in their NRL side & they get salary cap compensation for the following season... how people can whinge about that case is beyond me. Pangai Jr last year was bad, Nofaluma definitely not
I don't disagree with your draft idea being better for the game, just never going to happen because dropping 5 rounds of footy is 40 games. That's 40 sales of tickets, 40 advertising slots, 40 televised games that the broadcasters paid for. No way the game will risk that revenue by replacing it with 7 play off games imo. International football is a great replacement, I would happily see 10 less rounds of super league and nrl for a full 6 nations every year or something, but difficult to organise as the english/french teams have an even more horribly congested season than the nrl already does and have even less freedom to go against the wishes of their broadcaster than the nrl. Plus of course next year there is a extra team in the nrl further complicating matters.
It's not the bunker its the people they put in the bunker. The bunker is just technology the problem now is the state officiating they have feel or understanding of the game. There should be training from former players to help them understand. Abdo and vlandys need to resign or quit because like I mention before they have no footy knowledge there just politicians. Proof Gould asked abdo what do u want our game to look like and he politicianed away from an easy question. Same vlandys response to high tackles by saying lower your tackle range which is stupid becuase statically most injuries to head are caused by bad tackle technique (defenders getting heads low) My solutions 1 fire incompetent officials have 3 strike system 2 have training programs from former players 3 update the forward pass rule 4 the draft 5 update certain rules
Need to get rid of that stupid salary cap, not fair on teams like Penrith who get their players poached. League will only grow for the better once this stupid system is gone.
Problem isnt the bunker being involved. Its how its involved that the problem. Only allowing it too be involved during captain challenges (which are themselves boring and tedious to sit through) would mean we would get the same bad calls but limited to 3 or 4 occasions in a match. The bunker also does not need to be scrapped. It's a great concept that keeps the game fair. I would scrap the captains challenge. It slows the game down and stops it for long periods in a time where it is desperate for some flow. If a player is being removed because of a call from the Independant Doctor, it shouldn't stop the game. The bunker should have no ability to stop the game until there has been a stoppage in play. The bunker should have no say in sin bins for send offs. If a referee misses an a send off then it obviously wasn't that bad. If an offense happens out of the play or away from the ball and causes a stoppage to play, then the referees should be able to look at replays and make there own decisions. To stop people exploiting the 6 again rule at the end of games, the game should end when the last set is completed rather then when the siren goes. Sort of a less extreme version of how union games end. This would create insane endings to close games. The draft system is a cool idea. I think the competition should be 22 games played for each team rather than 24. Then teams 1-12 get draft picks 5-16 in reverse order. The bottom 4 teams do a semi final and a final to decide the top 4 picks during the first 2 weeks of finals. Teams 9-12 have enough incentive to play well as they are probably still close to the top 8. Clubs can use a certain number of allocated contracts to lock up academy players who arent in the squad yet. It is up to the player whether to sign the contract or register for the draft, but there is only a certain number of these contracts a club can give us and its based on a per capita system depending on the size of the academy. For example, the bigger the acadmey the more lock up contracts they have. Once the player signs a full time contract or leaves the club then another lock up contract opens up. Lets say a club like the panthers could have 4 or 5 players aged between 17 and 20 that are locked up. Bit of a crazy idea but I think it could work to promote a draft system but still promote academy investment. The NRL should schedule 2 weeks throughout the year to be respresentitive rounds. One of them during Origin 2 and another one earlier in the year.
The NRL tried to make an imperfect game perfect but all they have done is pissoff and drive away fans like me and my mates who use to watch the game religiously.
The problem is its a dying regional sport, you can't support 16 teams when only 2 states give a sheit. NRL doesn't exist out of NSW and Queensland, soccer has more grassroots participation, and AFL has far more money and fans, It's not even close. It's just gonna get worse.
Ashley Klein needs to be fucking sacked. Worst ref in NRL history. Bunker should only be brought into play when it's being used for challenges and try reviews. 2 refs on field and then that's the problem solved.
There is only one solution to this and it's one you haven't mentioned: Deregister the NRL and get a new competition in without any of the previous NRL bureaucrats involved and multi-millionaire owners like Uncle Nick Politis. A total reset is needed.
One rule I think they should implicate is a rule where if a player goes over the try line and is unsure of scoring, instead of spending 10 minutes with the bunker the referee asks the player if he would like to claim a try. If so then the bunker is involved and if it is found to be not put down it’s a change over. If the player doesn’t claim it’s play on. Speeds up the game a lot more and players will be less encouraged to lie.
Too many teams, limited Alpha players to go around, at present there could be at least 3 less teams, televise another graded group of teams that could be formed by the wannabes.
