I've owned my pool for 20 years and this is the first and only time I've gotten a really good idea of how to backwash properly. THANK YOU THANK YOU! I wish I'd known this long ago. I like the cutaway of the filter so I can actually SEE what is happening when I do it.
Mark's videos are very beneficial; my pool is over the top since I followed Mark's instructions. I had a pool specialist coming three times a year, costing me over 1000 Euros. I had no knowledge of pool maintenance since I moved to France. Now I do it myself. Thank you very much.
Thank you Mark. I fully understood every word you said. You have made me a professional pool cleaner of my above ground pool. God bless you now I can save $200.00 for cleaning
Great Video. I've had a pool for 35 years and I can tell you that this is the best explanation of how to run your filter that I've ever seen. I found it because I need to have a friend take care of my pool when I'm gone so we watched it together. GREAT JOB!!
Thanks for the easy to follow explanations and videos. As a new pool owner (the home we bought had an existing in ground) it’s easy to get confused by jargon or conflicting advice. You’ve just earned a new subscriber. I’ll have to check your other videos to see if there’s one that shows how to install a new pressure gauge because mine is so cloudy it’s hard to see the needle.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies Thank you! I’m starting down the rabbit hole watching all of your videos so I can learn more about my pool and how to properly maintain it.
Best pool video out there. My pool pump didn't run for 3 days, got a new pump. and of course it turned cloudy greenish with algae floating around. Added small amounts of algacide and shocked it. Should I backwash more frequently until clear? Thanks
Mark I have been in the pool industry for over 35 years. I sell those Hayward filters and they have sight glass. When you are back washing you look @ the sight glass till it runs clear. Then, when you are rinsing you do the same till it runs clear. So timing it is irrelevant.
I like to do both, in this video l do have a link to another video called basic filter operation where l go into more detail about the sight glass and overall operation of the system. Thanks for watching.
Hi Mark, Can u explain me the positions of the tubes during the processes. So when we backwash we open the tube to waste, skimmer, drain. And close the hoover and the backwards to pool?
I have a video called basic filter operation that goes into great detail on how to operate the filter system and how to use all the positions. If you watch this it should help. Thanks for watching.
Thank you very much for the easy explanation regarding how filter works actually and the backwash, I have a pool when I vacuuming the pool in few minutes the pressure disappear than I have to change the position in the filter valve to backwash for few seconds than to filter again for to continue to vacuuming is there any special reason Sir?
If the pool is very dirty and you have a lot of algae and debris you vacuuming, then this could be a reason why you have to backwash in between vacuuming.
Hi, I've just found your channel very very good thank you for your help. I've just moved to Spain and taken over the upkeep of our pool, so will be binge watching your videos. if i were in the same country as you I would definitely use your shop. once again thanks 👍👍
This was posted quite some time ago, but I’m also extremely curious when you backwashed does your pressure get higher when your backwashing I’m new to sand filters and I don’t quite fully understand quite yet When I backwash I noticed the tank seems to swell up and I go to about 13 psi when it’s backwashing it starts off at about eight psi and then all the sudden jumps up to about 13,14 psi
You want to backwash your filter when the pressure gets about 8 to 10 psi above your start pressure. When you backwash the gauge can fluctuate, when you are done backwashing the pressure in the tank will come down and the pressure on the jets in the pool will increase. I do have a video on basic filter operation for use with a sand filter, here is the link and hopefully this will help. Thanks for watching. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TqSPuekohqQ.htmlsi=ejpIExzuECBS-86n
@@pita-bw2cy I recommend having your pool water tested at your local pool store. Then you will know what to add to balance and clear the pool. Thanks for watching.
I noticed you didn't do what another pool expert said, that is, he closed the skimmer and return valves, which mine did not come with, so I opened a plug that is for waste water basically, no valves closed, then backwasded then repet for rinse, plug back in I'm finished. My problem here is my pool will not clear, I have done all the chemicals, they are ok. I just opened the filter back. Maybe there's not enough or too much sand. I added 4 6oz cups. That's how close it is. I noticed the water on top of the sand seems dirty and the pipe in the middle that states don't let sand get in the tube has sand in it, how will my pool ever get clean when it's shooting out dirty water through the return?
You are not supposed to have sand in the stand pipe of the lateral assembly. If so, then you will have to remove the assembly and inspect for damage. Thanks for watching.
Evening Mark, I have a leak coming from the top of my sand filter and under my top mounted multi port valve, I have replaced the o ring and tightened the clamp, when the filter is on filtration, backwash or rinse the multi port valve rises and leaks but when on recirculate it’s fine??? It seems to me is building up with pressure and causes the multi port to pop up, if that makes sense. The sand in the filter was replaced in April with 75kg of sand 🤔
I would recommend to remove the valve and check the o ring again. Make sure it did not move out of place and it is clean (no debris or sand). Also make sure the proper type of sand was used #20 silica.
So from my understanding turn pump off everytime u mibe handle turn back on move the handle turn on an turn off every time you move handle an backwash an rinse?
What is the purpose of the sight glass on the filter and what should it look like when it is running? All I see is about 2mms of stagnant water sitting at the bottom of it and the filter makes a slights sloshing sound. Is this normal?
When in the filter position the sight glass is clear and empty. When backwashing and rinsing the filter the sight glass will show the condition of the water as it leaves the filter. If you have a little water at the bottom of the glass when you are done, this will be fine. Thanks for watching.
We just got a new pool with a sand filter and didn’t know that you have to backwash. We got some debris in the pool when we first turned it on because we went straight to the filter setting. Is it still safe to swim in?
Let’s say when you pour in the sand for the first time and might have not by any chance be leveled in the tank. Does the sand level itself in the tank when you start operating it?backwashing, rinsing it and all that?
You want to put the correct amount of sand in your tank. The label on your tank will tell you how much you need. If you put a little to much in, the tank will self level. Do not fill the tank all the way up. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
Yes, when you are done cleaning or backwashing the filter you should add DE, the amount of DE that is added will depend on the size of the filter. The label on your filter will tell you how much you need.
I have 2 sides of the pool 1 baby 2 feet deep while other part double of this small side looks crystal water and other side is dark made me think that the tiles are gone to colour change. Could this be ever happened ?if a problem of water how i can see beautiful water in the small one?
Hello Mark! Great video! So I did not know and yesterday I put in a treatment , because my pool got green , how long should I wait before I backwash? Should I do it after I vacuum the pool ? Thank you!
When in filter water should not come out of the back wash line. Make sure that the valve is seated in place. If water does not stop coming out of the back wash line you may have to check the gasket inside the valve.
Fullpack to support idol,,but i need to watch from the start idol,, from the valve and the switch to ON and OFF, because some other have, filter pump and fountain pump,i confused where is the switch i ON after turning backwash, filter pump switch o fountain pump switch, need more your video idol, thank you
Yes, the bottom cap that I believe you are referring to is the drain for the filter. You only remove if you are draining the filter, or changing the sand. Thanks for watching.
@@SupremeSkeptic If this happens you need to backwash and rinse again or a little longer. If this continues or gets worse then you may need to change the sand in the filter. Thanks for watching.

Started the pool this spring but backwash and rinse do not expel water from the waste port. Water stops coming into the filter from the pump. guessing something is broken or clogged within the sand filter itself? Strange because regular filter works fin
To run a test put your filter on recirculate and see how it runs. There are several different things that could be the problem, feel free to contact me I will be glad to help troubleshoot this issue.
Water wells are not usually backwashed, however you can filter the water. Backwashing is something you do to clean a sand or DE filter for a swimming pool. Thanks for watching.

@@HallmarkPoolSupplies I just find it odd, because in backwash it comes down the central filter pipe do the bottom, then up between the sand and then out to the drain. Excessive pressure, taking the sand? Or too much sand to begin with, inside the filter?
I do not get one thing. When the filter gets dirty and we back wash to wash out all dirt. How the system makes that only dirt leave but not sand? Or we losing dirt together with sand?
When backwashing the filter, the dirty water and debris are flushed out. The sand is weighted so it does not go out. However, you will change the sand in your filter about every 2 to 5 years on average.
If you have a sand system, it sounds like you may need to backwash and rinse your filter thoroughly. If you put the system on recirculate and everything is fine then your filter is dirty and it is restricting the flow. There are several other things to check but this would be the first thing to check.
As a rule of thumb backwash, rinse and then you would add chemicals. Never add chemicals and than backwash in the same 24 hrs. If you are referring to a DE filter than you would add DE as needed.
You may need to backwash the filter, if you already back washed and pressure is still weak you may need to change sand in your tank. If you put your system on recirculate and the pressure is still weak then you will need to check your pump's impeller. Contact me if you have any questions, I will be glad to help.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies thank you for your help! I’m having serious trouble opening the lid to the pump (in order to clean the pump basket). I tried using the metal lid opener but won’t budge. Are there any tricks to open the lid?
@@HealthyLifestyleRemedies No, but if you can get the lid off make sure you lubricate the o-ring this will make it easier to get the lid off when you have to remove it.
Hi Mark I nowI have to do my own pool cleaning and I’m trying to get the hang of how to do a backwash on my Hayward DE filter I’m not sure if other than turning on the skimmer is there anything else I’m supposed to have open such as jets and island when running the backwash process?
Hello great videos, do you have any experience with filter balls versus sand in a sand filter we’re trying filter balls and we’re wondering if the back washing method is the same with filter balls thank you
Hi Mark, I’m new. What does it mean when the hose up top keep popping off. I started opening on Friday and Everything was good for those 2days Today I come out, turn on pump and the freaking hose pops off, water everywhere of course. I tried tightening it, front -back and it still pops off. I’ve been trying for the last 7 hrs ( because I’m stubborn 😂) . I feel like it’s a pressure thing 🤷🏽♀️. Yesterday the pressure gauge was about 18, I was told ( 1st hooked up last yr)15-20 is good. I’m lost. I got this sucker open by myself and operating but NO CIGAR😤🫣😞. What’s a girl to do
After you backwash then you rinse the system, not waste. Check out my video on basic filter operation, it goes into more detail on how to operate the system. This should help, thanks for watching.
Make sure you have the vacuum hose hooked up properly, there’s two ends one is stationary and the other is swivel. The swivel end goes on the vacuum head and the stationary end goes on the vacuum plate. I have a video on pool vacuuming here’s the link-ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wUokLi3KQ9U.html If you have any questions feel free to contact me I will be glad to help.
For normal vacuuming you would vacuum in the filter position. When a pool gets algae infested or is really dirty then you can vacuum in the waste position. When doing this you will bypass the filter preventing the dirty water from going back to the pool, however vacuuming in waste will lower the water level and you will have to add water to the pool.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies I had to up the horsepower on my pump motor because I have water solar panels mounted on top of my garage roof and I need the extra pressure to get it there and back.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies it’s good very good runs about 8 psi on filter with strong flow going back into pool and in rinse it’s strong with full flow. It’s got new sand and new hand valve I bought the whole assy because of the spider gasket glued to the assy from the factory
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies Mark guess what the plumbing is wrong I got the pump hose going into return and the return to pool hose going into the pump fitting 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
You may need to backwash and rinse again, if the problem persists then put the system in recirculate, if you still have a problem then you may have a clogged impeller. If the system runs good in recirculate then you may need to change the sand in your filter.
@@Android_Warrior Have you tried running your pump in the recirculate position? Your pump is new but what about the filter or the sand? You also what to make sure that your system is hooked up properly (hoses).
