A small but important detail: bears smell meat and move towards it, just like wolves. So, be careful when passing through their habitat areas with meat.
That the first think mentioned wasn't that "bears are the nightmare fuel which keeps you awake at night, the mere sound of which sends your heart pounding", means this guide is inaccurate.
Thank you for explaining that the bears won’t always stand on their hind legs before charging. The bear on the Milton bridge did that to me and I thought it was a glitch.
Have almost 700 hours in the game and didn't know most of that information. I always avoid the bears unless I need something from them. Great video, thanks!
A cool idea would be Bear variants like what the Wolves have, what I suggest is a "Winter Bear" variant (Which is a real thing IRL). These Bears didn't get enough food before winter so are starving & on edge to the point it makes them extremely aggressive, unpredictable & even cannibalistic to the point other predators like Wolves & even other Bears avoid the areas they're in. What makes them different if that agro from a farther distance, they have more health, do more damage & they will actively hunt down both the player & other animals in their territory relentlessly. Think of the Savage Deviljho from Monster Hunter, an animal driven to madness by hunger.
I wish they make the windigo in the custom map too like imagine if during Aurora's if a moose spawns on your map you instead you get a wendigo and that will hunt you until the Aurora is over oh my God I would love that
Love this super informative and well-edited guide!! Gonna try using that campfire and charging combo next time 😮 Would there be a chance for a moose guide as well in the future?
This is VERY useful information, thank you. Something I noticed recently while trying out stone throwing distractions is that the bear will walk to the spot you threw a stone, then turn back to it's original target ( you if you smell or it's normal path otherwise). Throwing another stone while the bear is walking to the first has no effect. The bear will ignore it so it's a waste of a stone. You have to wait for it to finish it's first detour. EDIT:- I notice that in the spreadsheet, bleedout time for the bow on the torso looks way too high. Is this a typo?
Nice, Great info. One thing I found out the hard way recently, You do NOT always get the bones as a warning that you are standing by a bear cave. In Broken railroad the bear cave close to the hunting blind is just so. Also, what sick Joker decided to put a memento cache in a frickin Bear cave!?! I had no idea and was about to bed down around the corner in the back when suddenly, HELLO? OMG, about gave me a heart attack.
Ive experienced bears a couple times that appear to track my scent when ive crossed their preset path. I had a tm bear make a beeline straight for the mountaineer hut on the same path i used as i was returning from ash canyon.
Personally, bears are my favorite animals. They are extremely deadly and cute. They have funny butts and bellies and stuff. I really love bears, but they scare me in this game. I didn't know campfire tactics and always hunted with the shoot and hide method when I encountered them. Of course, I wasn't always lucky. Once I was playing in Archivist mode and I had 1 last note left. That note was on Timberwolf Mountain. I waited for the aurora for a few days and it didn't show up, so I decided to go to the top of the mountain while it was here. I wish I hadn't said that. While traveling towards the summit at night, an aurora appeared unexpectedly and the weather became extremely cold. I had 3-4 kilos of meat on me and the smell mark was visible on me. I lit a fire somewhere and started sleeping intermittently. Aurora bear attacked in my sleep and listen to this. I know Long Dark is not a horror game, but I SHIT my pants because of fear. Of course, he didn't attack once and then let go. He attacked me 3 or 4 times and finished me off. I used up the last bullets, emergency medicines etc. but it didn't work. I have never forgotten this bear attack, and although I love bears very much, when I come across one in the Long Dark, I most likely hunt it and reward myself with its meat.
Great video! TLD can be so dense and withholding of its information and game systems that unraveling it is almost like some form of mysticism. I do have an alternative version of the bear dance that I think is easier and safer to execute. Find a tree or similar object that is free of obstructions around its base. Position yourself very close to the tree with it in between you and the bear. Keep the tree squarely to one side of your characters body and make sure the bear has a straight angle towards you. Initiate the bear to charge you. Right before the bear reaches the tree move to the opposite side. If done correctly the bear will have to move past the tree before it is able to turn around. If done to soon the bear will correct its course and follow you to the opposite side. If done to late you'll be mauled. The window for when to side step is pretty generous since the bear has a wide turn radius. This gives you time to reposition for the next pass. Since the bear is charging directly at you you're able to get consistent headshots. Bonus points for having wind protection from the bear and the tree once it's all over. This can also be done with moose but is harder due to their tighter turn radius.
Been playing for over seven years and I still learned things today!! Mostly about the 70% spawn rate (I think I unconsciously noticed some of this as I memorised spawn points but it's nice to know how it really works)
The fire trick cam be further exploited. Shoot the bear and wait near fire. Since they wont get close but still aggro on you, just sit down and wait for the bleed out
Love the video, looks like your guides always get decent views too. Would love to see more for moose and everything else. Maybe condense deer, rabbit and fish into one video since they're slightly more simple topics. Keep it up, love the channel
Thanks for all the great info, especially the numbers. Is it possible to find out the health of wolves and moose as well? The modifiers seems really interesting to experiment on.
I absolutely love your videos. I have almost 1300 hours and i still learn lots of new cool things from all of them. Please keep making this great content :D
I was actively tracking and shooting one on pilgrim to practice my bow shots I guess we got too far away from it's spawn because it disappeared in front of me. I think it just snapped back to its dedicated area. This was the mountaineers hut in Timber wolf mountain.
Just stumbled across this video after i nearly died by getting mauled twice from an aurora bear. Had to learn the hard way that distress pistols don't scare those away...
I fought a bear today that took 9 rifle shots, before it finally went down. That is not an exaggeration. Legit 9 bullets, 1 to the head. On stalker difficulty, no level 4 rifle. I was absolutely flabbergasted. Im glad i played it smart, that wouldve been a near impossible kill if i was in the middle of nowhere.
Now we need a wolf and moose guide and if you do a wolf guide can you show them the power line or tree bug we're if you hug the side of one the wolf can not enter a struggle and if you just aim a weapon it will flee and thx for the very well edited video I had to watch it a few times to let it all sink in
1:38 In my opinion, they are all active, it's a matter of getting close to the ,,bone,, at 500m. Because half a kilometer from the character is a circle in which the game generates animals, sticks, so being in the south of the airport, wolves do not kill deer in the north of the map. It's easy to see when using the fly command in mods that each bear is active as long as it doesn't regenerate after being killed.
You are right about animals only spawning when you are in close proximity, but there are certain bears in the world that have a 70% chance to spawn. I noticed this in particular in the past when doing the Great Bear Hunt challenge with some other streamers (all bears speedrun) There were certain bears that we began to think of as 'problem bears' be ause they occasionally wouldnt show - killing the whole speedrun. We assumed those bears were just bugged. However, with unity explorer, it can be seen that all of the 'problem bears' have a 70 in their chance to show variable unlike the others with have a 100 chance to show. All of the numbers/information i provide were found through datamining - it is not speculation. If i was speculating, i would make sure to be clear about that.
Thank you very much for such an informative video!!! Can you elaborate more about the mechanic where the bleed out cancles when you go indoors? Does this work on wolfs also?
I'm sure distracting the bear by throwing stones will go great. I'll be sure to never try that. That's nice the old oblivion stand out of reach and spam arrows works.
could you provide a full list of the guaranteed and random bear spawns for each region or point me to where i could find it? :) it'd be great if someone could add it to the wiki
The bear will not come inside, but do be careful near the edge because they can clip through it and maul you from the outside (i should have mentioned this in the video)
The bearskin bedroll isnt worth the weight unfortunately.. the improved bedroll is really good to use instead 😉 I think it weighs 1 kilo instead of 3 for the bearskin roll
This is such a good video. Glad I stumbled over it. Will the cave trick work in the cave that the bear actually spawns at or does it have to be a different type of cave?
The hunting is the one thing in this game that I have quite a bit of beef with. Especially because its supposed to be relatively close to real life. Body shot should be lethal and split up into chest and stomach areas with chest having high damage and fast bleed out and stomach having medium damage and slow bleed out. Limbs they shouldnt die from except for heads where they should die instantly. This would be the most realistic. Currently it feels super gamey, but that is by design because the realistic system would be too easy. But devs are smart and could peobably implement a way to integrate the two systems with eachother. The deer are also way too dumb and I dont understand the flare gun having the highest chance to kill but I also am not entirely sure on how a flare gun works. Ive played tld for a few years and its the only issue I have with it. It still is a super fun game. Just not as realistic as I had hoped I guess in the hunting aspect.
Somone has said amazing, so Ill go with thats a stupendous video! Really great tips and covered evwrything, how did you even work out all that stat info!?
One thing I can't seem to find info on is if wolves will eat dead bears. Like if I kill a bear and a wolf just so happens to come up on the bear before I can harvest it will it start eating the bear?
ok, so the damage and bleed out timers are clear. What happens with the bleed out timer if you hit the bear again? It gets a new bleed out timer from the newest hit or it's a "formula"? TY
Great video but please please please use less distracting background music- I could hardly focus on what you were saying because of the strong jazz lines
