This week on the VICE Podcast, Reihan Salam sits down with Jerry Brito, one of the leading experts on Bitcoin. Jerry is a senior research fellow at George Mason University's Mercatus Center and director of its Technology Policy Program. His research focuses on internet policy, copyright, and the regulatory process. Jerry was kind enough to walk us through the world of Bitcoin, the first decentralized digital currency that now has a few imitators.

Did anybody else find this interviewer incredibly annoying..? He invited a specialist guest on and then interrupted literally every sentence.. don't think the interesting guy got to finish one thought.. and he certainly didn't get to breath and start another.. had to stop before 20 mins as he was irritating me too much.. If you want to be a good interviewer then please.. learn to LISTEN..

I didn't see it that way.. the interviewer was breaking down what he was saying, I've seen people talk about bitcoin before and it left unchecked, it's just complete chaos lol they need to slow down for the people who are watching this to understand the basics of what bitcoin actually is in simple terms. He did a good job at that.

He's an expert yeah, but breaking it down and slowing the conversation helps new people understand the discussion about cryptocurrency better. It's one thing to interrupt for the sake of cutting someone off, but another to break things down for people finding out about cryptocurrencies right before watching this video or something. Some explanations can go very chaotic when it comes to this discussion, it's good to have a mediator. Broke things down very nicely.

freebitco.in/?r=220868 Can somebody please help me get some referrals? This is a legit free site for free bitcoins. You just have to roll a number to get high bonus. Up to .2BTC for the jackpot or 180USD. Don't get caught gambling away your winnings because it could get addicting, even though most of the time you're just gambling away pennies worth of BTC lol. 1. Create a Bitcoin wallet if you don't have one, at: www.blockchain.info/wallet 2. Go to this link: freebitco.in/?r=220868 Refer people yourself once you get going, and you'll get 50% of whatever they roll once per hour. The numbers seem small, but some people on that site have referred alot and have done well for themselves. Thanks and goodluck

Reihan Salam, the interviewer, needs to work on his self-awareness. Throughout this video, he was far more concerned about conveying his intelligence and appearing smart in front of his virtual audience than he was in extracting important information from Jerry Brito. The goal shouldn't be "I want everyone to see how smart I am (because I am secretly insecure about it)" but instead "Let's have this amazing expert on cryptocurrencies convey his knowledge so we can educate a lot of people about this new technology." Jerry Brito's language is crystal clear, nicely structured, and very approachable. Reihan's language is far too forced, contrived, and seriously out of touch. Rule number 1: KNOW your audience. Rule number 2: Stop invading your interviewee's responses with sprinkles of your own rewording of what the interviewer just said (which by the way is not a clarification by any means, it's just your attempt to sound smart) 3) Just stop interrupting your interviewee's train of thought. Let him finish answering your question and then follow up with clarifying questions. Jerry Brito's command of the English language is simply superior and excellent. His goal is to communicate well so that his knowledge reaches as many people as possible. Your goal is to communicate how smart you are to as many people as possible. Sorry buddy, your approach is incredibly transparent and completely ineffective. Oh, and annoying to the point you alone made this video unwatchable!

Would like to see Vice cover Bitcoin and digital currencies some more. Love the fact it is a currency that isn't controlled by corrupt governments and is totally de-centralised, however that does come with extensive risks. I know digital currency through and through and if you'd like to connect i'd be interested in talking about the possibility of doing a piece for you guys if you're interested? Get in touch.

@ Michael McCurley - I liked your the article you posted. As I read, though, I found that the company they mention (Snapcard) merely pays the IRS in U.S. dollars for you, while you pay them the value in bitcoins. Ultimately, your debt to the IRS for taxes can only be paid in dollars still, correct? It is not as if this company pays the IRS in bitcoins for you - in fact, since this company charges a fee, you would essentially be paying slightly more than the original (Dollar) value you owe on your taxes with bitcoins.

You only owe taxes if you traded, sold, or used any to purchase something. In addition, if you were given bitcoin as payment, salary, or as a gift/donation, it would be considered income and you would have to file taxes because it is considered income. If you just bought them and gained interest on them then you would not need to pay taxes.

Don't know if this is a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway. If there is no third party in the bit-coin service and funds are transferred directly peer to peer, then would this make transactions difficult to track? That may be good i guess, but if this were the case then would it not make black market and illegal goods transactions much easier to carry out and also completely anonymous?

I think there's confusion between what a "Store of Value" is and "Volatility" is. If you can buy, store and retrieve value from an asset. It is a good store of value. Seeing as the value of Bitcoin has increased and there is a limited supply, it would be a good store of value. When the North Korean threats came about, Bitcoin went up in value as well as gold. So during times of risk, BTC appears to act like gold as a shelter as well.

Money is supposed to be a medium of exchange. It needs an issuer and this issuer needs the power to increase and decrease supply according to demand, that is if you want a viable currency. If holding it makes you rich, it is not money.

As the value of bitcoin increases, the currency is deflating. That makes people hold on to their bitcoins because they believe that they will be able to get more for the same number of bitcoins in the future.

Notice how he doesn't use his notepad? Not once!!! What is it for? What's is in it? Why is it there? These and other mysteries shall never be revealed.

I usually hate your hosts and I'm not a particular fan of Reihan Salam. But, he did really really well in this interview and I'd probably watch more of him.

It's not a fix all. It will not replace fiat currency or gold but it can help bypass the powers that be. It has weaknesses tho. You have to keep your digital signature safe and on file, if it gets lost or corrupted then you lose all of your money. You must move around, store and process tons of data. This is because you must keep records of every transaction. This grows over time. This, even though very advanced can be hacked, maybe not now but eventually.

I have one question. How do you buy Bitcoins without using traditional payment systems? As using these would then result in fees charged by traditional payment systems.

Some say Bitcoin is a scam, that remains to be seen. But at the twenty min. area hes talking about Western Union and how they charge 5%. Now that's a scam. There was a time when that company *ACTUALLY MOVED MONEY* (and other things), now they only send data...wow.
