you don't know how HELPFUL this video was for me, I was always using magic mask on the color tab and always wondered why my tracking "went away" as soon as I changed something in the edit page, I didn't know it's just the preview that disappears so a lot of times I would find another workaround and not use magic mask at all, thank you so much for this alex, you are a lifesaver

Great tutorial! But I wish you talked about the " Refine Range " slider thats next to the Quality option for the track on the color page. It's automatically set to 30. If you turn that down to 1, you will almost always get a better track. I've used magic mask for hundreds of shots and setting it to 1 has saved me much more time. 🙂

Blackmagic really need to fix the fact that the Preview get's lost so quickli! You look at it wrong and already it's gone. Now if you use it for crazy things like cutting someone out entirely, you will probably notice, but if you try do a subtle color change on someones face, you might not reallize notice it again not being corrected later and then use a new node to fix it (maybe with something like the depth map). When you export you suddenly have the effect twice which might ruin your export!
A question for the DR experts. How can we apply Magic Mask to a still image, a photo? It would be really useful for the Ken Burns parallax effect on photos and other images, but I fail to make Magic Mask work on an image. Thanks for the video. As always, super useful tutorial. I found the hack to make it work. Place a still (photo) on the timeline. Render the still as a video on the Deliver page and import the video of the still image into the project and add it to the timeline, replacing the original still. DR can now track the video of the still and apply the Magic Mask. You will need to use Magic Mask on the Fusion page if you want to change the size of the mask etc. Alex, back to you for a great tutorial on the parallax effect with Magic Mask.
@@dr.gregoryf.maassen2637 You can Magic Mask an image the same way than video clip, nothing is different. An image can be on timeline or on Fusion page: Loader node or MediaIn node.
Actually, I found the clip in 1080p. And from I tried replicating your test. My 3080 got about 22fps and it's done in 27 seconds (Faster preset). For reference, this was done on DVR 18.5. I have Ryzen 5950X with 32GB 3600 RAM. RTX 4080 is twice as fast or more compared to 3080! Gotta save up for the next generation of NVIDIA!
Bought Studio version in like September. but MMs were so slow because old system and the 1080Ti has no tensor cores. Well finally got a new system last week. Can't wait to try them now with a 4090. Also excellent video as usual. Good info, good pace and no bs....
Even with the 4090. The Fusion version of MM is slower than the Color tab version if it’s a long clip track. The solution I found is to use the color tab version, render it out and bring it back in
Thanx for video) Some time ago i figured out, that if you need to cut some object in color page and then transform it - then firstly you need to precompose this clip, then inside this precomp do the magick mask track. And then, go to main timeline and do precomp once again for correct transform this clip :) yes, sounds silly and strange, but it works)
You can use Color page magic mask to track it, make white color generator, mask it, render it ad h264 so u can use luma key for masking in fusion page, so your key way smaller than alpha mask.
@@flipnap2112 no need alpha.... we can just go LUMA matte way... Alpha channel video does have waayy huge files... Just make Luma Matte, then in fusion you can use luma mask...
@@doughnut5286 if youre using luma mattes to generate a final h264 file with a transparency channel, that is an alpha channel. When you are in the color page and you need transparency you need to route to an alpha node. masking creates alphas. An alpha is simply a transparency channel.

Good little walkthrough, I should start using it more. You are the master of shortcuts😜 I once saw a trick to get an adjustmentclip the same length as the clip under - can’t remember if though. Do you know it?😊
Excellent Mr. Alex, the other day I edited a video of a sports car and used the planar tracker centered on the wheel to stabilize the shot, unfortunately the wheel changed perspective and at one point it was lost and I was left with some final frames without tracking, the problem is when I went back to the edit page, in the no tracked frames it said Offline Media, do you know why that happens or how I can fix it? thank you very much (although I had to cut the clip before the untracked sections come) Ps. Someday I will buy my RTX 4090, Meanwhile I continue to suffer with my GTX 1650(4g) LoL
I'm having trouble with my glasses. When I turn my head, I still see the original background through the glasses. I guess I have to remove the mask over the glass in those instances. Masking someone with strong glasses prescriptions must be difficult because you can often see the background warped through the lenses.
Here's a tip if you keep losing your work on the Magic Mask, put the clip in a Compound Clip or Render it in Place. This way, the tracking won't be lost & you won't have to redo the tracking.
I have had a problem with the magic mask. I apply the mask through the fusion page amd it works pretty much perfectly and i combine it ith another clip using a compound clip. Everything still working as intended however when i closed davincie resolve and opened it the next day it shows that it now only masked the reference frame and nothing els is masked. Is there a workaround to this?
id be careful with compound clips involving fusion. a lot of people keep their work flows very clean until the end. many will render out the fusion clips with an alpha if theyre good to go. magic mask is always kind of "live" if you know what I mean. fusion is a bit more stable but... you know
Using magic mask to take a dancing person out of a boring background, and putting him into another background but the problem with that is, the shadows are lost...any idea how to add shadows back ?? Thanks...
Great vids but on this one I cannot get the Alpha output, right click off the node nothings happens, right click on the node No option for Alpha Output. I use Ipad version of Davinci. Studio Version. Can you help, much appreciated
It seems that when i use magic mask, it's inconsistent across the clip. I end up getting very flickery images after removing the background. Like the ai struggles to find out whats real or not even with the minus dropper.. really frustrated this is happening after the large purchase.
Alex, 1st thank you for your videos, they help so much as DaVinci Studio is extremely frustrating and non-intuitive./We keep hitting a quite frustrating wall when trying this after we add the squiggles we try to hit the Forw-Back button and it does nothing??! Help please! Why does it not scan clip? 😢
Thanks for this man! Was so frustrated always losing my maks in the color page. Do you know if you delete render cache if the fusion tracking will stay as well? That would be a game changer for me.
What a great video thank you can i ask you something, i have a piece of footage that has a runner that runs past the guys in one of the films scenes and the director wants the runner removed he doesn't overlay the actors in the scene so makes it a lot more simpler but to remove him can i use the magik mask to select him and some other removal tool in DaVinci 18.5 ( i would have 18.6 but i am not a fan of upgrading mid project ) to get rid of the runner.
Thanks for the excellent instructions. I do, however, have a problem: once I learned that the magic mask on the COLOR page will not HOLD if you try any transformation, I made my Magic Mask on the FUSION page. yet, once the mask was created, and transformed, it did not HOLD on. Namely, I quit DVR Studio 18.6, and the next day I loaded the same project, the masks were not there - instead, I would see the whole image and not only the selected by MagicMask area (Actually, the clip is made of stuck images and each image (5 of them) was edited with Magic Maskon Fusion page). It behaved the same way as I previously got on the COLOR page. Is the problem actually stucking of several clips (still images)? Also, as my clip is a still image (photo), how do I avoid trucking in MagicMask? I do not need trucking, but as the MagicMask only works on the selected FRAME of the clip, I am forced to lose time by applying trucking at the still image. Thank you very much
Hello, thank you for your very well produced and very explicit videos. I have a problem with Davinci resolves, I can't track down a Magic Mask sequence. I have to do it manually frame by frame. When I start tracking, it is displayed but only the first frame is cut out. I have an I7 PC with 32 GB of Ram and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti graphics card. I even reinstalled an old version 18.5 because I used the Magic Mask before and it worked. The result is the same under fusion or color page. Do you have an idea? THANKS.
Thank you for the video. Really helpful. With the fusion version like you say it gets rid of anything that isn't part of the mask, but that makes it tricky for me if I want to add anything else in the frame to the mask because i can no longer see them... is there anyway to get around this?
I have to ask... You are getting 45 fps while using magic mask... What kind of footage are you working on? I'm working on 4k xavc-s filesi and my shiny new m3 max is only getting 13 fps while using magic mask. Is this laptop that bad or is something else going on?
When using 4k 10bit 4:2:2 I can get in the region of 30 ish fps so it will depend on footage etc. The Macbooks are fantastic honestly. 13fps for 4k MagicMasks is still solid! The 'Hype' and Apple-ness will have you believe they're the most powerful things on the planet and unfortunately that's just not the case. They can't compete against full blown GPU's (generally!) however... While its not as powerful as my full fat GPU, you can get 13fps from anywhere in the world and do it for several hours on a single charge, where as I'm stuck to a wall! That's the real benefit of the Macbooks.

Oh how badly I need this to work... For me, it has something to do with magic masks created on the colour page. During export as the render attempts to process them, a box appears saying: 'Magic Mask... Trackiing'. It doesn't work. I even waited overnight, but nothing. When I click 'Stop', it says export failed. Any help there? Resolve forums and RU-vid not helping so far.
Thank you for the video. I have a new top of the line computer with best NVIDIA graphic card, and have watched multiple videos including yours how to make it work faster with cache, proxy, resolution…. The thing is still very slow even after all lines are blue, still the playback is slow and interrupted. What is wrong?
If i copy the magic mask in the color page from one clip to the next, the color grade of the mask doesn't seem to copy over until i add the squiggle again... will it be fine when i render, or is there a better way to do this?
I noticed in Fusion that when I made one stroke the rest of the image disappeared. No red selection shown. Is there a setting, or would I simply have to go to a second window?
Hi Alex, thanks for this video that was the inspiration to purchase Studio. I think I might have some issues with it. When I track a 20 sec clip it takes 5 minutes. Is that normal ? I have 32 GB RAM an i7 intel, all should be up to speed right ? What can be the problem ?
I've been fighting the FUSION version for a couple of hours on a 20 sec clip. It's basically unusable. I tracks at about 1 fps (and that's on a M2 ULTRA Mac Studio) and had all kind of errors. The CPUs don't seem to be stressed at all, not sure what's going on, but I won't be using it again. If the color page version can't roundtrip back to FCPX, then I just wasted $300 on DR Studio.
Hi guys! I have just started creating my video content. I screen recorded my PS5 gameplay in 3840 x 2160 (24 fps) and made a music video clip for RU-vid to test how it will look. H.265 and H.264 export from DaVinci Resolve Studio with 80000 kb/s bit rate did not work for me; my video lost a lot of quality after uploading on RU-vid. I tried different options to keep quality of the video as close to the original as possible, so I finally used QuickTime DNxHR HQX 12-bit which was optimal between quality and the file size. But what I cannot understand is why my video, once uploaded on RU-vid, looks quite alright at 2160p and really awful at 1080p on my Laptop (on my iPhone 14 Pro Max both look good). I thought, maybe it is typical for 4k videos to look bad at 1080p because of compression, but when I had a look at other channels, I could see that it is not completely true. Could you please explain or give me some tips on how to choose the best raw video resolution and exporting options in my case?
Hello Alex, when I use magic mask in Fusion, it is much slower than in the Color tab. About 25 times slower. I have an RTX-4080 graphic card in my computer with 64 Gbyte internal memory and 13 generation Intel I7 processor. In the color tab the speed is about 29 frames per seconds on a 4K 30Hz. footage. Is this normal?
hi bought studio 3 weeks and well magic mask not working as should i must be missing something done as you show but in object for some reason it will only tack the first frame then loses it any idea whats happening have i mist something
Ive had this problem where my magic mask tracking dissapears when i close and reopen the project so I have to retrack any fusion magic masks I have any project which can get kinda tedious. Any ideas as to why?
Tensor cores are specifically for AI/machine learning. They have dedicated cores specifically for those tasks. Cuda cores are like the general horse power cores, they do 'everything else' basically.
Hey Alex, do you think using the window+tracker or magic mask is the best way to go about bluring somebody's face that moves around frame and behind other objects throughout the clip? Even just bluring eyes?
