Nobody has stock anymore in part because people were trying it in the store and buying it online. Inventory and the space to keep it costs money, which doesn't get recouped when you're acting like a free dressing room for an online retailer that gets to maximize their profits while minimizing their costs of display and employees. Want the convenience of being able to try it on for fit and size? Then be willing to pay for that convenience! The impact of that kind of attitude is less choice for us consumers and a less vibrant local marketplace.

Great video, but the one thing no one ever talks about is aerodynamics. Not wind noise, but how well the air flows over the helmet. I had an HJC that was well made and comfortable to wear, but over 100 km/h it felt like it was trying to pull my head off! I replaced it with a Shoei RF-1400...it was just as comfortable and well built, but 3 times the price! However, the air flowed much smoother over it, and it was much more comfortable at highway speeds, so for me, on a naked bike with no windscreen, it was worth the extra cost. I'd love to see someone test helmets in a wind tunnel or on the highway to compare airflow...I'm curious to see if that's where most of the price difference goes.

What really separates a $300 helmet from the $1000 helmet are the materials used to manufacture the helmet. A carbon fiber helmet or composite helmet will cost much more than a fiberglass or high volume material helmet. ECE, Snell, etc., determine the safety of the helmet. You could wear a titanium helmet that was meteorite proof but the weakest link is the person themselves. The brain is still bouncing around and the neck/other structures can only take so much.

im a 27 year old with a 250cc Suzuki Cruiser and i rock a modular helmet and i can say ill probably never use anything other than a modular helmet. best decision i made when shopping for a helmet. Being able to drink or take a quick nibble of a snack without removing the whole helmet is a fantastic feature. plus i can be more personable when going into the convenience store quickly and its easier to speak to others in those situations as well. 10/10 would recommend a modular helmet.

Something else to consider...color and gloss. Use an IR thermometer. Gloss black is the hottest color, around 20 degrees hotter than flat white at 85F in direct sun. Even gloss white is hotter than flat or matte/semi gloss. If you live in sun beaten country like I do (Nevada), avoid gloss black helmets. Avoid Gloss helmets entirely. The gloss coating actually traps heat. Another advantage of matte or flat colors is you can easily check for hairline cracks with rubbing alcohol. (test an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it doesn't remove paint/graphics). Get some cheese cloth or fold up a paper towel and coat one side of your Non-gloss helmet outer shell with alcohol to wet look. Pay close attention as it dries. The alcohol will fill cracks and they will evaporate slower, allowing you to see them well right when the surface is just about completely evaporated. You're welcome.
@rightwingsafetysquad9872
@rightwingsafetysquad9872 2 года назад
IR thermometers generally don't perform well with gloss surfaces. Gloss paint will feel cooler inside the helmet. The thermometer is picking up a lot of reflected IR from the sun rather than originating from the helmet.

@cHAOs9
@cHAOs9 Год назад
In addition to safety squads point, also they are pretty well insulated so outside color probably doesn't make as much of a difference to inside temperature as you may think. Especially with a 100 degree head taking up all the room. Whatever air is coming in vs your already hot head is really all that matters im guessing.
@helmetinspection

The helmet will have stopped doing its job long before a crack is visible to the human eye.
@x-man5056
@x-man5056 Год назад
@@CaptainScorpio24 White is the best choice, for heat concerns and viability to others. But a glossy finish traps heat more than flat or satin. Glossy finish helmet is ALWAYS going to be hotter than it's flat or satin counterpart regardless of color.

Remember a Large in one brand is different to a Large in another brand, few weeks ago in a shop I found some Medium helmets in one brand, all the way to Extra Large in the brand I ended up with, so don't try one helmet at the shop and buy another online, try on the one you want to buy and then buy that exact one online or in store.
@skawm
@skawm 2 года назад
Solid advice. Typically new helmets display their fit size in centimeters somewhere, usually on the same sticker labeling it as Medium/Large/etc. That number is absolutely way more important to take in to consideration than the letters above or below it. If you swing by a retailer to try helmets on and you come across one that's a good fit from one brand, try on the helmets from the other brands within a 1 or 2 centimeter tolerance and make a note on your phone about the comfortable yet secure size disparities between them. You will get a much more accurate idea of what you need to look for.

Wish the video stressed the difference between the newest ECE 22.06 standard vs 22.05. Most helmets in the states are not .06 yet including the newest Shoei RF-1400. The European variant, the NXR2, is 22.06 certified (and is indeed manufactured differently, I emailed Shoei reps directly for verification) but doesn't have DOT compliance for State use. Which is why I ride dirty every day. Do what is safest, not necessarily what is legal.

One thing they missed. Most helmets use a simple brow measurement for sizing. I’m a large in Arai XD-4 but I must have chipmunk cheeks. When I order a new Arai, I have to order thinner cheek pads. When I buy a Corsair X, I’m a large and the pads are perfect. If the cranial shell and padding is correct around your skull but your cheek pads are too thick or even too thin, usually with quality brands, you can swap the pads for a better fit.

So wish it were that easy to go into a shop and try helmets. If your lucky they’ll have 2-3 brands and a bunch of L’s and XL’s. If you watch any YT creators in Europe every shop has walls of helmets, floor to ceiling, front to back helmets. I’ve been wearing the same brand helmet, same model (updated versions) for like 6 helmets now. The real reason is I know I can order a small, yup a small, and it will always fit. I’d like to try some other brands but you ever see size small in stock anywhere? More shops need more helmets, and protective riding gear.

I ordered an Arai Quantum X because I was told it was more intermediate oval, and should've been a good fit. I followed the size chart perfectly, and ordered the L when I am an XL in nearly every Shoei. It didn't fit at all. The chin bar smashed my face, lol. Had to return it. I was bummed, but ended up with another Shoei. That just goes to show that circumference isn't the end-all-be-all. You need to try multiple brands and buy based on FITMENT. Good video!

You guys might want to mention that Arai is one of the ONLY premium helmet manufacturers that actually makes three different helmet shapes depending on whether you have a round noggin (round oval), Intermediate Oval (most common) or long oval. I think it may be relevant to folks in the market for an upper end helmet. I'm not sure your analogy of having your buddy look at your melon to determine your head shape is the ideal way to go about it...lol. Like you mentioned, gotta go to cyclegear or dealer that will actually let you try on their $1000 helmets (many won't) to see what fits your particular head the best.

Drop down sun visor designs compromise on helmet safety design which is why Arai doesn’t make them.

I just bought my first fullface helmet for an overpowered ebike (12kw motor). Bought online and the fit feels almost perfect. I said "almost" because I have no idea how helmets from different brands or categories feel. I also haven't thought about the head shape, the online seller didn't specify anything. I'll take note for next spring to visit a shop to try a few models to make my standard for comfort.

My Smith Mainline MX/MTB helmet is my lightest, most comfortable and noisiest (you can’t even tell the googles are on; it has the view range of a 3/4 helmet). I decided for ADV to go with a mid-range modular (with high end features) and a neck protector, instead of a high-end helmet and no neck protection.

For any noobs out there looking for a beginner helmet, I'd highly recommend the R420. For just under 160$, you get some decent ventillation, good comfort, and a Snell certification!

Great story one thing that you might add is hair style. Back when I had hair I would shave it in the summer. I bought a helmet in early March with a full head of hair shaved it in April and ended up buying another new helmet

After wearing a Nolan N104 for a long time it had been a great helmet until the chin bar latch broke. I replaced it with a Shoei neotec 2. A very good fitting nice helmet except the chin bar blocks a lot of view compared to my old Nolan N104. After buying the Shoei I did find a Nolan n100-5 that fit like my N104 . For half the price and my opinion just as good a helmet. And the Nolan had a better chin strap retention system. And the dealer I bought the Shoei from won't let you return them. Even a day after the purchase.

Bell is well rounded!! working at a gear shop, Ive owned a TON of helmets (i have a problem, i know) and i always go back to shoei and bell. my rf12 and race star are my 2 favorite helmets ever owned. The best part of bell is that theyve been using mips for a handful of years now and starting making a mips version of their helmets for only a little more money compared to their standard versions.
