There's actually alot you can do to the swirl port heads to make them flow better. You would be surprised what a simple bowl blend. And thining and contouring the valve guide boss a little bit can do. They definitely aren't nearly as bad as people think they are. They are also alot less crack prone than factory vortec heads. It's just most people are too lazy to pick up a die grinder and let some metal flakes fly...😂

That’s why I like them as well. The are that head that is just reliable and did exactly what it was supposed to do. I also think it’s a few different things as far as the die grinder. One some people don’t want to do it, two some people may not know how to do it and three some people just shouldn’t be allowed to do it. 🤣

I would suggest seeing Charlie Servido's series on the 193 heads, it has been ongoing. He is getting some impressive flow numbers and he also give the swirl numbers showiing improved flow reduces the swirl, which is understandable. He also shows the results of liquid flow testing. Charles was a student of David Vizard and is friends with him. With Uncle Tony's Garage , these 3 are putting together what will be an amazing low budget rebuild of a Mopar 318 and it will be given away in a contest.

Thanks for the info, I am very familiar with Uncle Tony’s Garage. I actually hung out with Mopar Al on Power Tour 2022 with Slaghammer I’ll have to look into the 193 stuff, also that 318 build sounds bad ass too!

I like the Swirl Port heads for an off road rig or tow truck. I have a 350 tbi with swirl port heads and a summit k1103 camshaft in my lifted truck on 35's and it still burns rubber on pavement with 3.73s.

Thank you, gosh I’ve been going all around the internet trying to find out the truth about these heads and what they are good for and everywhere I go it’s no information just a bunch of adrenaline heads saying “Junk em.” This is what I needed and I will be continuing my squarebody build with these

I have a few sets of 193, and a set of the 191 heads. The 191 I have have a 64-65cc chamber. I looked into this quite a bit, I did find some interweb forum postings that there were (2) 191 castings. One with the larger chamber and one with the 64cc chamber. I poured the 191 chambers on the set I have, and they came out 64 or 65 cc, give or take. I can't quite recall what it was exactly, but I poured them last fall. Cool video. When I stumbled across a set of these heads, I could not bring myself to junk them. They just look like a badass set of heads, the ports are huge. Except for the swirl vanes. I still would like to port a set and see what I can get out of them.

Nice man! I love the simple idea that these heads just work. They were not as crack prone as many others and you can still find these heads relatively available for cheap.

My rusty beat up well used 86 chevy k20 custom deluxe long bed 4x4 farm truck i had for 12 and a half years,i had built a 1975 Chevy k20 Silverado 4 bolt main 350 , and it got punched out 0.30 and had .020 dome trw pistons and a set of lt4 style powdered metal connecting rods and the steel factory crank and the entire assembly was balanced.. i put Manley street master stainless steel valves and k-motion automotive products 600 lift capable double beehive Valve springs and a competition cams xe 268h 477/480 lift cam kit 221/224 107 degree, and it definitely had a noticeable lopey idle but I put that truck together knowing it was going to be pulling trailers hauling junkyard scores,motors,rear end parts complete housings, cylinder heads, big loads of firewood chunks, and hauling heavy guage scrap steel and scrap metal to the scrap yard so I knew it would be worked,th400 hd stamped top right side of the bellhousing factory transmission for the truck got a full rebuild kit and a B&M shift improver street and strip and rv and towing stage 2 and a B&M torq master 3000rpm stall torque converter more like a 2,100rpm stall but oh well, and a factory replacement brass and metal copper heavy duty 3 core with ac radiator and a B&M 16000gvw transmission cooler and the addition to the dr side windshield pillar 3 3/8 inch sunpro super tach II black face tach and that's the truck i was talking about the daily driver everyone complained that had to feed it if they used my truck,it got 6 1/2 mpg but it would haul drag or pull almost anything i needed it to...

Some are just clueless on the amount of air flow to be gained porting SBC swirl port heads, 224 to 250+ CFMs isn't nothing to sneize at.

who cares what you've got to say! There's plenty of documentation of the gains that can be had by porting the swirl port heads. Depending on what amount of CFM is the goal,one can expect gains of 224 to 250 CFMs.

@@johnohara7590 And then stick that amount of labor and $$$ into porting off the shelf aluminum heads and once again the swirl ports are trash.. APPLES TO APPLES no matter what way you go Swirl port heads are a giant piles of trash. Even if you compare them to vortex heads they are junk! That's why no one uses them. Sticking any money into them is not only cost and hp prohibitive its pretty dumb! I mean if that's the only thing you got and just can't save up for a set of Ebay DNA heads and some good valves and springs or enforcer AFRs for a grand and want to spend endless hours on cast iron porting, and valve jobs, springs on a turd then go for it lol!

@@larryw5429 actually in the hands of the right porter these heads perform quite well up to 7000 RPMs as will the 305 heads. And your wrong about no one using these heads as they're still in demand for street hot rodding and racing,in fact there 's a well known head porter on youtube looking for some 193s who knows how to extract power from them for a sleeper project. There's more to making power than CFM !

I have 193, 191, and 810 swirl port heads. All have the same cc's and valve size. The 810 has 3/8 sodium filled valves. I wish people would stop getting their info off of a website and actually cc the head.

Charles Servedo got 300+cfm out of those heads, and they are not as prone to crack like vortecs

One bad thing about these heads is once they get about 200,000 miles on them the iron gets brittle, and they can crack just from old age.

I wonder how much they'd improve if you knocked down the "fin" in the port on the 191's? I've got a set I'm putting together for a backyard budget dirt track motor for a bullring track.

Only thing I’d be worried about is cutting too hard and finding a coolant passage. It’s been a while since I looked at these heads but I think there is a coolant passage right by that. That “fin” definitely kills flow.

These are good heads with a lot of undeserved bad comments on their performance. All you have to look at is dyno comparisons at lower rpms and they produce very similar torque and hp numbers to some of the best old school hi perf smallblock. I had a 350 with a vortec roller cam, flat top pistons, 193 heads, headers, police injecter and a stage 2 chip. It passed m😊y state's emmisions and could do first and second gear burnouts. High rpms definitely produce more hp but your engine will have more wear and not last as long.

These heads are just what u want and need for heavy pickup trucks and pulling. High air flow numbers on other heads make a towing engine run worse than stock. I know from experience. U dont need high flow numbers for low rpm torque and towing. You never go pass 4500rpms anyway so these are what id use and are better than the 041/186 camel hump 64 cc chambers heads. And there actual cheap to buy as no one wants them. People are so concerned about high rpm and high hp and they dont mean nothing for trucks and pulling engines.

Also don't forget there's the 305 TBI heads too. I forget the casting numbers. They got the 1.840 intake valves and 56 or 58 cc chambers.

Isnt the 187 also a tbi head? My neighbor has a 92 chevy truck that doesnt run and it has 187 heads its a TBI motor. I was gonna throw them on my 78 C10 long bed heavy half ton with 3.08 gears. Thinking they would increase bottom end power over the 76cc smog heads. The truck lives at idle to 3000 rpm.
