Considered one of Canada's most prestigious post-secondary institutions, the University of Toronto, also known as UofT, was founded in 1827 by a royal charter as "King's College." In 1850 the institution changed its name to its present moniker and contains 2 satellite campuses throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
The Milkman popped up at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus, to find out what life is like on the grounds of Queen's Park...if any.

having no time to think or exist outside engineering. having classes that end one day, and having a final literally the next day with all the content from that week. having like 2 semester-end projects that start and end in the middle of finals season. having so many assignments that you do nothing else until the finals hit. spending 2 consecutive nights without sleep (usually wednesday & thursday nights), going to class on friday and then partying that night till 3am on saturday. spending >2 days at a stretch in lab while missing all your lectures and sleeping on lab chairs overnight (almost one of these every week in second year ECE lol).

At UofT you are treated like a number, not a person. It is highly competitive and cut throat. They demand a lot from you. Also they have proven time and time again that they don't care about their students mental health. They care more about funding and public image than their students.
@kenrenji1
@kenrenji1 4 года назад
Katie Doucet I agree with the mental health part. But I feel like people saying it's cut throat is an overstatement. It's a lot of work I agree, but no one's out here sabotaging you, they just might not share notes.... If you do the work and socialize you'll be fine. It's just about your approach to it.

and yet the prestige-whore students clamour over each other to attend for that public image. The students subscribe to and therefore encourage the culture of prestige and premium-ism, results over people, and steamrolling others for personal gain. That's no one's fault but the students. Vote with your dollar: study elsewhere.

Honestly, a lot of points made were true but I still think that UofT is a great school. I’m in first year engineering and honestly, i love the community. Despite the fact that my classes are online this year, i’ve met so many people and there’s a huge sense of community because everyone is struggling just like you. You just have to pick and choose the people you wanna surround yourself with, but mostly people are down to help you and explain questions to you. It’s a competitive school but at the end of the day, there are a lot of nice people as well. If you’re nice to people, others will be nice to you in return:) also join clubs! you meet so many upper years who are there to help you and even give you notes!

Do you think it is possible to work and go to UofT in the same time everyday?
@yashaardaad4533
@yashaardaad4533 Год назад
I'm a second year Life Sci student at the University of Toronto. U of T is definitely hard and challenging but I do think this video gave a little bit of a skewed perspective. You have to remember that there are so many people at U of T, and subsequently, everyone will have a different experience. That is one of the things I love about the university. I know people who are commuters and loved commuting everyday. I know commuters who hate commuting. I know residence students who love residence and I know others who hate residence. U of T is just another normal university, and if you come in thinking that way, you will have a great time. It is a big place and it can seem daunting at first, but almost everyone I know has found their own little community within the wider ecosystem of the university. The key thing is that if you want to do something at U of T, there are all the resources present to do it. It's just about being willing to find those resources.

@yashaardaad4533
@yashaardaad4533 3 месяца назад
@@user-lw2ni1fp4v It depends. Generally, the answer is no. U of T arts and science as a whole has a pretty high acceptance rate. You'll hear this a lot, but people mostly say that U of T is 'easy to get into, hard to get out of.' And I think this is true to a certain extent. U of T is probably the hardest university in Canada and possibly one of the hardest public universities in North America. That being said, it is a really great education that teaches you the ethics of grit and hard work. It's not easy but it's very rewarding...until you get screwed over by crap marking TAs.

Nothing’s changed in 20 years! I went 1999-2003 and it was lonely af then and it’s just as bad now. People didn’t share notes, in my Econ class, there was maybe 50 of us graduating, I didn’t make a single friend and I’m outgoing. In 2nd year, I ended up founding and joining a bunch of student clubs, made things bearable, but if I was to do it all over again, I wouldn’t go to UofT, I’d go to Western or Waterloo, the friends that I met later in life who went to those schools made better and stronger friendships. Even those who graduated from York seemed to have enjoyed their university experience far more and didn’t feel like life chewed them up and spat them out.

Okay this video made me pretty sad ngl. I just finished my first year at U of T (literally today) and it's been the best year of my life in spite of the coronavirus pandemic. I found a ton of great friends, extracurriculars that I love, and enjoyed my classes. To be honest, I think a lot of that has to do with my program and who I am as a person - I'm in social sciences, which is definitely less competitive and stressful than sciences so that definitely changes things. I'm also kind of that jerk that doesn't study and still does well, so, to be honest, I would say classes/studying was like priority #7 for me, definitely not #1. My top tips for coming to U of T: if you can live on residence, definitely do! I found the majority of my friends and communities through res. Colleges can also make or break your experience- I go to Vic and I LOVE it there. Another top tip: do one of the college's one programs; you get to be in small classes (one of my classes had 6 students) and you get to know professors. Honestly, U of T is a fantastic school if you're self-motivated and willing to put in a little bit of effort to make friends and find communities. Don't let videos like this scare you out of coming to what is, in my experience, a great school!

I think Science v. Humanities/Social Sciences is really different! I did Neuroscience and Psychology (which is considered as a science at UofT) and we had these big facebook groups and there's usually at least one person (usually more) who posts their notes (AND recordings) and people help out each other. We're still competitive but there's a nice sense of camaraderie and support. We also had lots of socials in person and I definitely felt like I was part of a community. Being part of a "social" college really helps as well (I've heard that in Woodsworth, people didn't really talk). I'm from Trinity and instantly found a community (it's definitely the study hard party hard kind of atmosphere) and I've had a lot of friends from other colleges as well from joining clubs and meeting people in my neuro and psych classes! I didn't have too bad of an experience and really enjoyed it -- the people made all the difference (I had a number of great profs who became my mentors and I met really great people who have become lifetime friends). From what my friends from humanities/social sciences told me their classmates were way more stingy with notes and didn't help each other in class or in the FB groups...It made it a bit more difficult starting friendships but not impossible! The UofT experience is very field-dependent.

Great! Another UofT drone *Sigh* . You must understand that not all top-tier schools are like UofT, just look at Harvard they are considered a top school and they are not as severe as UofT. UofT's CS POST is very, and I repeat very unfair! They put these all of these freshman into a ring, and force them to compete with each other for a chance to get into their desired POST. While others are forced to either switch schools, or switch into a major that they do not particularly like, like stats or math and minor in cs. Let us not forget about the countless of UofT students who are still at UofT even after 4 years, I have recently talked to a dude on Reddit who has been at UofT for 7+ years!!! UofT has shown time and time again, that they do not give a crap about their students. People who are struggling with mental health issues are forced to wait days and sometimes weeks to get help. UofT is not broke! They can easily get more mental health professionals, but they would rather use that money to invest in Gun manufacturing facilities(thetyee.ca/News/2016/01/12/Weapons-Divestment/). How many suicides will it take for UofT to finally change their ways? 2 years ago, a UofT freshman was visiting the campus with their mom and witnessed a suicide attempt. What was supposed to be a new beginning for a promising young freshman ended up being a horror scene.(www.reddit.com/r/UofT/comments/6ykcrg/a_uoft_student_attempted_suicide_today_on_college/) I feel like UofT is just trying to be another MIT, but the difference between both schools is that- UofT purposefully makes things harder for students by deflating marks, and adding cutoffs. While MIT's courses are more rigorous in nature, and the crazy thing is!! You can actually fail a course at MIT and still work towards the degree you strive for. WOW! Isn't that crazy?! My points may be all over the place, but I just dislike this whole "UofT is what you make it out to be." Rhetoric, it's way deeper than that.

I cannot believe how much people hate on U of T. Best four years of my life. So many people go there because it's local or because they want the prestige, but the people who actually go there because they like it end up having a wonderful time. Make friends at your college or in your program. There are tons of events. Classes are hard because it's a challenging and rewarding academic experience. If you want to just skip classes and party, go to a different school... duh??!!

Tldr: I was at st George for undergrad, graduated in 2016 yes there is a damaging mentality there, but it *can* be subverted and you *can* build community, though it does take more effort than schools in smaller cities. There *are* a lot of opportunities to be had here, and if *you* want to go here, NOT just for the paper at the end, then it can be a rewarding experience. I think a lot of this also depends on the program you're in and how you approach extracurriculars. I took a lot of classes from a smaller program and was able to recognize faces and we developed a good community. I also joined a number of clubs just to see what was there and stuck with the ones I liked. UofT does have a lot of $$ for resources and opportunities (I didn't need to buy a bike for a year and a half, and didn't even need to pay when the wheel got stolen). Like the one person said, just replying to the email, taking the 'leap' to join a lab (once you're in you realize how it was silly to feel so intimidated before) can help tremendously. That said, uoft can be a bit of a pressure cooker as a student, and the self-selection of high achievers means a lot of the students there, especially undergrad, are already prone to being stressed and anxious. And then you just put a bunch of those ppl in the same room and make them do tests... a lot of my friends definitely struggled and found it hard to meet ppl. It can definitely be an isolating experience, but there are means to mitigate it. It's so important to have stuff that you do outside of school that you enjoy. We NEED to have more to our identity than solely being a uoft student. I went to uoft because I wanted to be at a dt campus in a big city. I didn't realize the 'prestige' of the university until after I was there and saw how other students talked about it. Though I obviously tried to do well, I didn't focus on my grades. I volunteered a few hours a week and met ppl, I joined clubs and met ppl. I chose personally meaningful courses over bird courses and easy grades. I am naturally outgoing which helps, but there are a lot of ppl who are starved of community at uoft and would love to make a friend, especially in first year, so I promise you can too 😉

I currently attend UofT, both Downtown and Scarborough campus. From my experience I like the Scarborough campus way better because it has a sense of community as opposed to the downtown campus. Downtown, however has way more options for courses when it comes to particular programs. One thing that I have found is that even though UofT consist of 3 campuses they may as well have been 3 different schools. I say this because it is so difficult to transfer from one campus to the other. I tried doing this and had to complete a full application as if I was applying to get into the university for the first time. Now I’m applying for a transfer into York.

UofT and many other large universities are ranked high because their research and grad studies. As a grad student, I would advice undergrads, seriously, go to a smaller but still great university. You’ll have much more done during these years. When the undergrad volume is so high, how can you get advices or answers from your professor? At the end of your degree, how hard is it to get a decent reference letter from your prof considering so many of your classmates are equally competitive? U of T is great in many ways. But not undergrad education.

I agree I went to uoft in the early 1990s. It was so cold and impersonal and the professors had no idea you existed as classes were so large ( I took sciences). I think best for undergrad go to a small university then grad school at UofT or other top programs. Your grades will probably be higher at a small school with smaller classes and you will bet far more attention from profs and teaching assistants. When I went to UofT many teaching assistants could barely speak English and the school did not care about you as there are just too many undergrads.

Similarly I heard so many people being biased about UTSC students. First of all, I know UofT Saint George graduates who are doing their MSc and PhD research at UTSC. Do you think these people are stupid? Really? Why do majority of the UofT Saint George students have so many biased opinions about all UofT campuses. Think of how many UofT professors from St.George, UTSC and Mississauga are teaching in other campuses. These professors are working so hard to provide the top academic standards to other UofT campuses. I know that UofT Saint George is difficult but stop spreading rumors about other campuses. You are putting down the UofT spirit and you are making it easier for other Universities to tease us.

If you have mental illness and something complicated is going on in your life, UofT is not a place for you. My life was fine, when I first started school at UofT, so I worked hard and I got pretty good grades. My depression was getting better as well. But something horrible happened in my life later and impacted my school life. I was literally lost. I'm sure people wth mental illness can relate to this. You never know when depression is gonna hit you, but school is not very supportive. There is a support called "Accessibility Services", but profs usually don't know how this works, so you end up not using most accommodations that you are getting. I think, for most students, if you work hard and sacrifice other values, you will be fine. But the time at UofT can be the worst time of your life, if you have mental illness. Also, if you are in engineering, you don't really have time to sort out your life. Most of my friends who are smarter than me and decided to go to York (They ditched the acceptance from UofT) are happier and had no problem getting a job, so don't worry about the brand value of UofT. Choose the uni that is easier for your future. Scary Fact: At least one engineering student commits suicide. This tells you what it's like to be in engineering at UofT.

I'm a McMaster student! Your class experience and general community depends on your program here, I find. I'm sure that's also the case at U of T and other large universities in general. Ultimately, if you're going to a major university like Mac, U of T, Western, UBC etc., you will be going to school with thousands of other students, and your experience will depend on what you make of it. What environment suits your goals? On top of that, how can you best maintain your well-being and performance? They're both good choices though! Best of luck, choosing a university can be so hard 😅

Allscool - what’s your plan after life sci? Even with life sci as a start for first year on the end of first year during summer you will have to specialize in certain programs, either specialist with minor, double major, or major with 2 minors. After that u have to think about either med school or grad school. It’s better off to plan now.

@chadesiel 4 года назад
@@allscool-4131 hope everything goes well for you. With that said, I extremely recommend you to try hard in first year, as marks well affect you in which programs you can get into for the 2nd year. For life sci the typical is usually taking all 3 sciences + calculus and an elective. For elective you may do psy100 for one semester and the other I would recommend doing a seminar course as it's somewhat like highschool comparing the size of the class and much more communication among colleagues. If you do need any tips let me know. For starters, you always want to read the lecture materials, trust me they do 10x better the job at explaining than most of your profs. I know it's gonna be super tough specially for that first year and 2nd year to get good habits going and there will be a ton of stuff to read and learn. You can start off with just reading the headings of each section as it will prime your memory before going to lecture, try to form questions based on some of them and maybe you can get these answered either in class or go up and ask the prof.
