@Britec09 Having just done a completely fresh install of Windows 10 21H2, I was having a lot of trouble with Windows permissions on my system partition (the "C:" drive), and, after a lot of faffing around, I eventually discovered that, (as an administrator), I could run *compmgmt.msc* and make myself a member of the *"Device Owners"* Group, which gave me full control of all folders on the drive. Once I had managed to do that successfully, I was able to create a special folder in the root of the drive, where I could save certain special types of downloaded files, (files that had been restored from a Macrium Reflect Full Backup Image), and completely edit out the old user permissions from my previous Windows installation. I'm the only user of my desktop PC, and I see no need to keep old user profiles around that are interfering with my access to the C: drive, (plus I have a very large storage volume, [roughly 10TB], spanned across 3 HDDs, which I needed to import to my current installation), and this was the only way I was finally able to do the import. I have just one question: Would you be able to do another video which explains some more about the *"Advanced"* permission settings? I would particularly like to understand more about the *"Auditing"* tab in the *"Advanced"* permission settings. Thank you so much for all the information you have explained very clearly in this video! 🙏🏻

at timestamp 3:02 when you're adding yourself as principal, there's a greyed out option called "special permissions" why can't you tick that on since you're the owner of the device?

A single home user does NOT need this crap. I found this on the MS website... which IS exactly how I feel..Is there ANY way to turn OFF this permissions thingy?!?! I am soooooooooooooooo tired of MY machine giving me "Access denied" or "You need permissions from " errors!!!!!!!!!!!! (And NO--I'm NOT going waste MORE time, monkeying around with user account, etc.!!!! Been there....done that! And STILL doesn't work!!!!) Why do I need permissions to do ANYTHING--on MY machine?!?!?!?!?! If I'm willing and determined to (accidentally) delete an important system file on MY machine--why should windows get in my way?!?!?! Hackers don't seem to have much difficulty placing hidden files on our machines--so, why shouldn't WE be able to move, copy or delete files from our OWN machines?!? Since this permission thing, is obviously flawed--is there some way to turn off all of this permissions stuff, so that I can determine what files are to be moved, copied and/or deleted (on MY machine?)

Thanks Brian, truly awesome, I've always struggled getting to grips with permissions and your video has explained the process with ease, cheers mate, keep up with your sterling work, I have learnt so much from your channel over the years and always appreciate video content and look forward to learning even more. If you get chance, could you possibly show how we can have network connection in safe mode because in Windows 10 we could but for some Microsoft reason we can't in Windows 11?

The most annoying thing is that by default a non admin user has full access to all hard drives on the system. Really stupid imo. I shouldnt have to stuff around with permissions on the aditional drives unless I want to GIVE access. Default should be denied access so I can just create users and not worry about them poking through all the back up drives without spening hours applying permissiont to terabytes of files.

It amazes me the amount of information that you fit into a video that is less than 12 minutes. NTFS permissions can get pretty complex and you did an excellent job of explaining the basics.

hi britec tell me this is now on one machine right? now how do I give certain users access to certain folders over the same network from their computers as I do not like the everyone object plus I don't like to utilize another pc to install freenas....so if I have 3 users on the same network how do I make sure they have access to their own folders and not trying to fish what's not meant for their eyes....if you can help with that or have a link that'll help?

@Brite09 - I am studying for the A+ exam and just watched another video on the same topic but, his information is contrary when it comes to Inheritance. He said that the remove all option can mess with the Windows OS System Files/Folders and he thinks that this option should not exist. I was wondering if you have any more specific information as to why you would use remove all vs. convert?
@DatBoi_TheGudBIAS
@DatBoi_TheGudBIAS 5 месяцев назад
Inheritance removal CAN mess the OS, but only if u do it in critical folders/files (source: I did it) Removing inheritance with the delete all inherited permitions option clears all permitions. That's why it's dangerous. Removing all accounts access to a critical folder could end ur system (source again: I did exacly Dat)

Hello, Can you tell me one thing or make a video Regarding my Matter, I am discuss here for a beginer. I know there are all option in windows 10 or 11 but as a beginer if any third party app is available to do all thease type of job in one dash board usuing GUI, it will be big help now i am telling you in details. """ As a example : I have a Windows Main PC, and i have 3 users who will acess this Main Pc via RDP, But administrator want to give them many type of permission or alow to acess this pc. like in main pc have a application name notepad, administrator want only User1 can only acess this notepad but not see any drive and acess for main pc. or administrator make three folders in main pc like user1, user2, user2, each user only can acess this folder only, not see and acess other user folder or main pc drive. One more thing lets one user type some thing on notepad if he want to save this file he can save the file only his folder or can save his own pc."" if there is a third party application to control all things in one dashboard or make a video like this I think it will be very help for beginer also me. thank you.

So is this similar to how a hacker ransomware works? Like locking you out of your files, and when you pay the ransom, they have the ransomware return authorization to the victim?

Great video. Two questions. (1) What's the difference between leaving a permission blank vs "Deny"? (2) Does providing admin password to perform one operation e.g. write or execute in a folder, compromise the entire system or will an app requesting access be able to perform only that operation? Example, I have a malicious app that runs under UserX account. App wants to access folder Y, but UserX cannot access folder Y nor can it access folder Z. So I type in admin password when prompted to allow access to folderY for UserX. Will the malicious app be able to do malicious things only in folder Y or will it also be able to access folder Z?
@DatBoi_TheGudBIAS
@DatBoi_TheGudBIAS 5 месяцев назад
Deny has priority over allow, meaning a user wich is in at least 1 group/user with 1 denied permition, he's not allowed to do that thing. For example, if u deny userX from reading the file, but userX is an admin, and admins have full controll, userX will still not be able to read it

I"ll see about following your clearly stated steps. I don't know what differences there are between the settings in both W10 computers to cause one to have access from W11 and not the other.
