I noticed that your story telling improved. This is my new fav video so far. This made me think about my academic life. Should I go college next year? I'm hesitant because I don't even know my passion and yet I don't know what course I'm gonna take. This is a great video, Max. Thanks for this.
Many people have intrest in sex then what should be advice 🤣 If you really want clarity in life go visit acharya prashant english Chanel no person on earth can give you clarity like him it will take time to understand but worth it
Here is my take as a 27 y.o man: No matter which path you take, you will learn no matter what. Hard way or easy way. The key is to THINK no matter who and where you are. The finish line is your last breath. Then you'll see the results after that last breath. It turns out just like the cliche saying: Each of us is unique, don't compare too much our life to others, take our own path.
Sunday, January the 30th, 2022 - 7:40 in the morning, This video felt like a confusing creative puzzle where almost all of the pieces were the same color, but the photo on the box was full of different colors. You know what I mean? First off, it felt somewhat ironic to bring a college dropout to a conference about the future of education. I was tempted to title the video something along those lines, but I didn't really see how it would fit into the narrative. Moreover, this was my first time at a conference. I don't know if you've ever been to a conference or what I was expecting it to be like, but I felt like we had been given a secret pass into some simulation. Quick story: (I don't feel like writing much today) One night I went out to a dinner that the event had arranged and everyone was standing around talking/networking. I was feeling tired from the long day, so I decided to find my seat and see who else I was going to be sitting around. I figured I could look up their name tags and get a headstart by doing some research on them and that perhaps that would be a good way to spend my 10 minutes before the dinner commenced. Well, I looked up the name tag on my left side and one of the first articles that popped up had the headline of "__ raised $130 Million from Bill Gates + Mark Zuckerburg for Education Startup." She was one of the many incredible people I met who were working on really ambitious projects. However, everyone I met seemed a bit pessimistic about the future; they didn't believe that governments would do anything or that they could trust anyone in power to make real change. That struck me a bit, but on the other hand, what they were optimistic about was the youth and our ability to radically shift the future. That's stuck with me. Again, I'm not here to make any conclusions, but I do feel like it's important to discuss this. School should be fun, something we look forward to, and a place that can help us all become better versions of ourselves. I don't want to be too idealistic, but I feel like that shouldn't be too much to ask? But again, It's just such a complex issue. There are a million factors and things to take into consideration, but I'd love to hear some of your ideas in the comments. What would you do to change the education system in your country? What do you like/dislike, etc? One of my largest takeaways from this whole experience is that there has to be a better way to approach college/higher education. It's a conversation that I've had with my friends before, but this has only further sparked my curiosity for the "college experiment" that I want to test out. That's all I'll say for now, but I look forward to sharing that adventure with you- See you soon, Max I highly recommend listening to some of the talks given on the WISE youtube channel: ru-vid.com/show-UCvCym0qZPUjCWpllQMx894w I also took clips from Sir Ken Robinson's incredible Tedtalk: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iG9CE55wbtY.html&ab_channel=TED (rest in peace)
The research of a famous Turkish historian says that the most productive and productive age of people is between 15 and 25 years. A lot of us are this age now and we spend all our time putting ourselves in school. We study lessons that we are not interested in by the system, and at the end of the day we only have an ordinary life. I appeal to the young people of the world, let's make the world more livable and literally live
It is so true! I've been drawn towards music and art my whole life, and everyone I've ever met has said, "People shouldn't go to school for music, business, finance and computers is the way to go." We literally kill the creativity in young people. To me it horrific.
So, I will add a comment. I went to the University of Pennsylvania (Ivy League school). At that time, there was a course book, which listed allt he courses offered in a given year. I remember looking through the book just after I was admitted and finding so many courses I wanted to take. These were courses on topics THAT INTERESTED ME. Not courses I would somehow NEED in order to get a job. College for me was learning about things of interest. Where else would I find a seminar on the Russo-Japanese War or a course on Military and Politics in the Third World? If one goes to college JUST to do the requisites to get a job, that is sad. JOBS COME to those who are INTERESTING and INTERESTED. If I got good grades in university (which I did) it was because I was really eager to take the class.
Feeling the exact same way, so I'm trying to live by that philosophy! There's no logical reason why I'm studying cuneiform script/Middle East ancient history in a Northern European university. There's almost no job market. But the interest is there. The studies feel so meaningful, so much that I don't worry about a future job. That, as you said, will come by itself, in due time. For now it's enjoying and appreciating the privilege of choice. Felt good reading your comment! I often feel like I'm alone with this mindset.
I totally agree with what you are saying. Many people regard university as a place that gives you certifications to qualify for a job, but for some that's not the case. However, I think an important point to consider nowadays is the cost of going to university. Is it worth it to be paying tens of thousands of dollars each semester just to be able to take classes that 'interest you' when the internet is full of all the different kinds of content you could possibly want? I don't really know.... Of course in countries with low or no tuition there is a very different approach to what university is. I currently only pay around 100 euros to study in Germany and that is including transportation costs. I have many friends and acquaintances that do multiple majors and pursue topics that they are passionate about without having to worry about tuition. If you want to work, you can - there are many job training programs that don't require a university degree or you can just put your studies on hold for a few semesters while getting experience and earning money. So i think it really depends on where you are from and what your goals are.
@@seongminpark7513 I agree with you. WHen I went to university we had no internet. Some schooling is way overpriced. You make many valid points. Clearly university in Europe is a better deal than overpriced ones in the United States.
@@nexttsar wow, firstly i look up to you! i always wanted to get into an ivy but i am questioning the requirement of uni now. i will ask u for an advice, u said that you take courses that interested you, but the problem is I have interest plus a talent in more than 10 things and this makes it really difficult for me to focus on one thing or just trying to understand what path I want to take in college and life. like I said I question the requirement of university but it is also very difficult to come to a place or to land on a job without a uni. what is your view on “coming to a place without uni” or “how one should fulfill their experience?”
8:54 This girl is Linya Peng (she is a hard-working person; I used to see a video of her studying for around 20 hours) and I saw you in one of her videos, but I thought, "No way, why is he there?" because you have not gone to college yet and I thought it was a look-alike, and now I can confirm it to you. I can't believe two of my favorite people on the internet met one day.
Hey Max, Have you ever researched about the education system in Finland? I have been studying it quite a bit, and many people, including myself, consider it remarkable. Finnish students have consistently scored well on the PISA survey. However, students in Finland don't feel the need to "earn good grades." Instead, they desire to perform well and to find their life-long passion. Pasi Sahlberg is a wonderful advocate for Finnish education. He goes to many places around the world to share Finland's story. He is definitely worth listening to. Just thought you may like this, if you are interested in the search for better world-wide education. Have a fantastic gap year! - Joseph
I am from India. I despise the education system here, to get into college you have to sit for competitive exams, since we're a country with such a huge population, these exams are extremely competitive and suck the life out of you. These exams demand 10-14 hours of your day solving maths physics and chemistry questions. I am an artist,i used to paint frequently before i started preparing for a competitive exam, it's sad to say its been about a year since I've picked up a paint brush. Yes there education system sucks, but i still have hopes , not from the system but from people my age, i am still very excited about going to college in a few months.
First of all, I wanted to say that your editing skill is so AMAZING. When we talk about the college, mostly we think about the degree and gpa. But I think the most important thing is the experience. Of course, there's some experience that you can't find from any but in the class of the college, but there's still tremendously experience outside the classroom. If your job need a degree such as, engineer, doctor etc you have to get a degree. If your job didn't really require all these thing, I think you really didn't have to go to the college. College is a place where they gather people that interesting the same thing. If you need to find a friends who are interesting in same thing as you, College is not a bad choice for it. But If you think about the money to spent on those 4 years, If you can spent on travelling, starting your own shit, that would be awesome too. I'm currently taking a gap year now, I'm looking back at a last year and realized that I learned a lot of things, I'm not gonna lie, it was the most boring year that I've ever had but it was the year that I learned things most too. But I decided to go to college because in my country didn't have outside places much for learning on the things that I interesting to. But I'll really don't care on those gpa and dregree much for sure. The world is SO BIG, there's a lot of knowledge outside of the room that waiting for me to learn about! What a great work Max. This clip is one of my favourite so far. Thank you so much!
I'm on my gap year as well and this is so relatable. I also decided to go to college, my first sem starts next week actually haha. Goodluck for college! I hope you've a great time there :)
"Education" has come to be synonymous with "job training", but the two are not the same. Job training produces employees, but education produces educated people, that is, people who have learned how to learn about and think about things in the world and beyond it. The question is, which of these are the colleges and universities of today actually producing?
I know that this video is about more is higher education really necessary and all that (which I find really interesting and can't put into words). But I think college is also about making friends, meeting new people, growing/changing as a person, yes learning new things, finding stuff that really interests you and most of all just having a fun cool experience :)
Don't write off education too soon. Yes, it may or may NOT make you rich. But, you will change as a person, and learn more about yourself. Just like travel. I'm in my late 30's and going back for 2 bachelors degrees after being a paramedic. You can expand yourself through education. And quite possibly make a living. The truth is though, like many things in life it is what YOU make of it. Wishing you luck on your journey.
thats the point of the video dude education is now synonyms with getting a job and earning money and this video discusses how education should be about making yourself a better person and do what you like to do with a passion such as art language dance maths physics whatever you do doing it for passion is the important more than if i get a medical degree i will be a doctor and make money
I think very similarly in terms of the value of higher education. I decided to go to college last year for the experience. If you feel as though college is going to offer you a greater value of learning, connections, and positive life experiences MORE than if you weren't to go, well, I guess that is the argument. Good luck Max, keep doing great things.
Hi Max! I live in Turkey. I just want to tell my story. I'm going to apply to colleges next year and I'm so excited about it. Since our university entrance exam was very difficult, I decided to go to America. Our education system consists of so many subject details that sometimes I hate school. So I improved my English and I am currently studying the SAT. In my opinion, education is very valuable and important for a person.
You can’t be a bioengineer or a surgeon from traveling around the world. A lot of the hesitation about pursuing college seems like fear or entitlement.. maybe a fear of being trapped. It’s only four years… you have the rest of your lives to learn how the world works.
I agree. Some paths require a college degree (and I'm glad they do, haha). Fear/entitlement is possible- but, I'm framing it more from the perspective of the opportunity I have right now with social media. In 4 years, that could be gone or very different. The opportunity I have now isn't guaranteed forever whereas learning will always be there. Both sides have valid points- I appreciate your perspective, cheers!
What a good video, the truth is that I think that in schools they teach you things that in the end you will never use in your life and they will not help you in the job you want to get. There should be some way to be able to study to achieve what you really are you want to be
I loveee the video from Sir Ken Robinson! I watched it last year and thought: wow great, this man got it! That's what I'm feeling and thinking about our educational system and he's bringing it straight to the point. Love it that you included it in your video and I love to see your journey, thanks for this great video. That's really a terrific cut!
One of your most intriguing and philosophical videos yet, Max, and that's saying something given your previous repertoire. I'm currently a sophomore in high school, and the only thing people really see me as is a "straight A student". I seek the validation of perfect scores quite often, yet I'm always the one to criticize how test-oriented and mentally depriving the US school system can be. I confuse myself with how conflicting I can be, but I think I've found that it's (grades) the only place an introspective person, who's still a product of the system, can find satisfaction. I find myself each night staying up doing countless assignments rather than pursuing little projects and outdoor activities that I find cool, because "school takes priority". As a result, many of us neglect the things that are forced to become side hobbies and as a result never find passion. I think that's why we are so lost heading into higher education and the "real world". Most people expect me to head off to an Ivy or immediately attend college because they see my high GPA and A+'s plastered across my report card, but to me that's all just black ink on paper. Higher education has become another marketing game in the US, and puts emphasis on future professions rather than present learning/exploration. If I do choose to attend college, I hope I can go into it with the lens you've presented in this video rather than becoming another object on the assembly line of life. The fact that your gap year led you to such an opportune and eye-opening conference amazes me and it makes me happy to see that there are people out there who want to see change in the school systems just as much as I do. This video put all my thoughts into coherent words.
Here in India, u can't have this discussion lmao. We are a very stigmatized society with strong views on education 🎓, here if u don't have a college degree, u r gonna starve on the streets. Our education system kills the creativity of young ppl sadly. And we don't even talk about, we r'nt supposed to, and that's a stigma that really needs to go.. Coming from a high school dropout whose gonna grad high school an year late than most ppl. Salaam 'Alaikum (Peace out) Max! ✌🏼, keep up the good work bud!
I m from turkey. Our education sistem is very hard .Because we learn that an education system based only on formulas is learned at the universities of other countries while studying in high school.
Hey Max , I think you should travel more , and reconsider that subject , because there is still some facts about it that you didn't find yet , Don't get me wrong , the video is amazing , you brought some few things in it , but for the point of view of people like me , there is still missing pieces . Love you man ✌️🖤 , keep going it's always good to see you .
I believe there are many flaws in the education system in the UK! it’s way too highly pressurised and too heavily focused on exams and memory, instead of actually learning. they also expect us to learn a ridiculous amount of content making it more of a memory test. I’m hoping to study veterinary medicine at uni this september!
I wish education would no longer be a vague development but a mere talk or a plan. Do you understand. I hope and most importantly apply it right away meticulously, surely. Not only studying subjects at school, but giftedness also plays a role, a value of its own. In short, I just want to be the maximum development education. I just want the education of each country to progress, I just want to stay at the stage of development without development and fear that it will stay the same, slowly even stagnate in the country. location. I want to say more, but here we go. Very good video MAX. You are fighting in the right direction. As the right itch of education.
hi Max, depsite in the life there's nothing really "sure", cos all is continously moving, really I think to have understood your message. I like your way to shoot on a video your flowing of thoughts, sharing with us and keeping part you your journey called life. I have seen most of your video, starting from my passion of cars and languages but slowly I saw there were a person back to the screen we too much underestimate sometimes, and tryna understand what's your message, I really think we all are made in the same way, but also we develope in such differend mode. I enjoyed this video and part of the speech telling " we all born as artist, difference is keeping this alive". I'm 22 years old, and all these feeling you have and constantly try understand, I already have and still having. What is showable from your videos is your way to take stuff and in the same time a bit of uncertain of future that melt together and make life. My suggest is keep to be true as you are, spontaneous, but also to don't be pressed too much of it, cos only on this way you can keep take the best from yourself. In the case your choice of future will be tryna applying for college, of course remember will not be "the same" of others, because all of us can take the same road but driving it in a drifferent way, that's what make us special. You've got all possibilities to get an higher education and this will be only a good small part of your life. keep sharing video like that, back to your camera there's always us. Wait you in Italy cheers
This is my first time i have watched your video. I am an Asian . And your topic in this video is exactly what i am worrying abt my future cause i have to decide to choose between going to the university or working next year. I like the scence when you were i small child. Literally , i never dare to overcome my comfort zone and i do not know what i should do . Thanks for inspiring me. And i will start follow your channel
The problem is that we’ve mixed up vocational school with a university tradition focusing on the Classics and Liberal Arts. The schools of engineering should be sponsored by the industries that need that. Guilds are what they were called in the distant past. A university education in the liberal arts will open the world of history and thought to someone. You’ll be taught to think for yourself. There are forces at work that don’t want that. They want you in a box. Controlled and properly utilized to make money for people that laugh at ‘college’. My advice? Keep exploring, Max. You seem to have that opportunity and ability. Take it while you are still young!
Treating it as an "experiment" or a game has been really amazing so far Only a few months earlier I was considering taking a drop year but I decided to go to college anyway, and approaching it in a different way actually makes it surprisingly fun as well as productive, it's just about keeping consistent with that mindset throughout :)
College is a place where you can explore different career paths and gain knowledge about a wide variety of subjects. This is where you can learn about economics, business principles, psychology, social movements, music, art, computers, journalism, literature, mathematics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, physics. Knowing about these things helps you find what interests you and broadens your possibilities of finding a satisfying career. I started out studying chemistry, then accounting, then psychology. I graduated in philosophy and spent most of my career as a professional writer (computer technical writer) and journalist. As a media influencer, with a solid college background, the world is wide open for you. Please do not underestimate the value of a college education. Check out how much more money you will earn with a college degree.
It’s interesting because I dropped out and long story short to build a “career” you need a degree (I am back in college). Now, I don’t think this is an educational issue. I think it is an institutional problem where the cycle of elite schools, jobs and money continues.
I think having enough money can allow you to think about success in other terms? But when you don't have money, and you are hungry like a lot of us in the 3rd world countries, we becoming very competitive and obbsessed with grades because its been proven again and again that grades equal to success.
I think the most important aspect is the “pursing higher education with desire.” We should be eager to learn. However, the system certainly has flaws which prevent us from actually thriving in such intellectual settings. This is where the focus should be. How could we improve this? That is one of the biggest questions for us as the future generation. Education is extremely valuable, and we are witnesses of the caos ignorance can create. The true meaning of education scapes classroom walls, but it also showcases the next steps to build up our future’s landscape. I believe the debate should be centered towards more answers to this inquiry! with or without degree, education as primary source for human development needs to stick around :)
Hey! I graduated high school early too, and I regret not taking a gap year. I lightened my course load for this semester because I’m feeling very lost, but I might take a gap semester. I need time to discover myself and I never got the chance to that. I feel like now is the time.
when I took a gap year I was taunted badly by my relatives and also questioned on many things by my family. I was thinking only Indian parents see a gap year as a waste of time .I was wrong every parent does 😄😄. in a gap year, anyone can learn more than that academic year ... I learned video editing, graphic designing and studied various topics. a gap year is very productive year in anyone's life .
I love how we are growing up together (: I'm taking a gap year too and during this time I realized that I can't keep forcing myself to not be an artist because that's just who I am...
I can totally relate to what you're saying, Max. I had to leave high school because my mental health was so messed up that I simply couldn't go on. During this time while I was out of school, I went through a lot; but I also learned loads of things that school definitely wouldn't teach me. Now I'm heading to college, but the thought of "is this necessary? should i invest my time and energy on something else?" still floats around. Oof sorry for the long text
just to add: our educational system is kind of rotten. like something that was implemented a long time ago but now it fails to work successfully. school feels traumatic. sucks your mental health until you don't have anything left... complicated.
A senior of university from Malaysia here. For me, pursuing a college/university just to try to be a better me thru the certificate I can find a better job in the office not a waiter cuz not everyone suitable to become youtuber. Besides, to go to a uni is also impt if that you really have a interested field to learn more about them. But, the MOST impt for me is because, UNI TIME is the best years of our life. We don't need to carry any responsibilities might from our child, from making money. Just to live our life, do what we love, find what we want. And also, really a lot of students wanna go to a uni but they're lack of financial support. If you find your goal, you know what kind of ur personality is, I believe that everyone can choose a best way for their life, if you figure out in a couple years later, there is always nothing late to get in a higher education. Just my opinion, everyone will get lost, but no worries. :)
i really am surprised how you forgot that we'll all die and the thought of death was buried waay tooo deep in your brain 15:40. it wasn't a "hot" thought that existed with you and honestly it was shocking to me. personally... the thought of death gives balance to my life and not try to push myself to unrealistic levels. it never fails to calm me. 🙂
Completely biased, but the educational experience I'm receiving at Whitman College (WA, USA) has felt pretty counter to the status norm in education right now. Yes, grades matter, but my professors have made it absolutely clear that they would rather see me learn and grow. Mistakes or risks are ok - and even encouraged. The message I'm getting is to be a good citizen rather than be a good employee. I hope this is still true for other liberal arts schools out there.
Here is my take as a 27 y.o man: No matter which path you take, you will learn no matter what. Hard way or easy way. The key is to THINK no matter who and where you are. The finish line is your last breath. Then you'll see the results after that last breath.
Let me summarize my take on this video simply by stating this: If you want to be excellent in whatever profession you decide to invest your life, you must be an eternal student. (Ask a physician or a computer engineer) Excellence is the key word here. College: add socialization to the learning mix. Is important! Being a well rounded individual is only improved by socialization. (AKA. Arts and Humanities) Should it be this expensive? Hell no! (Remember France and Switzerland and their take to education.)
Here in the Philippines in order to get a job you have to be college graduate or at least a high school graduate. In your place is way different than here. Nice video btw
im in my 2nd semester of my freshman year of college and not a day goes by in which I don't question whether college is the best way to spend my time. It's a weird dichotomy: on one hand I feel so lucky to go to college and have the opportunity to further my education and social network, but on the other hand I feel like I'm limiting myself. I spend everyday going to class, studying, and eating. It's just this never ending cycle. Social connection isn't guarenteed at all, and for me it's been a bit hard making friends. So, anyway, college is weird and hard and confusing man. I don't think 4 years at the same institution, seeing the same people, writing the same types of essays, and taking the same tests is the best way to spend one's time. College just feels like a job tbh. Don't know if I'm living or just existing. But I also don't know how to "live" and not "exist" regardless of location and situation. lol. k bye.
it's important not to project the idea that opting out of education is a choice everyone can make! Having the financial support and an environment that enriches you is a privilege which not everyone has, and pursuing further education for many is still the decision that projects the most economic security.
