When I was a kid I would go fishing with my dad and look for rocks and other things while we fished. Then each year I would look more and more for rocks, to the point where years later I wouldn't even fish, I just went with him to hang out and look for rocks while he fished 😁

"Oh my gosh I love rocks!" thanks Ariel for the rock hounding tips, I'll be rock hounding the shore in Minnesota / Wisconsin this June! I also appreciate the high quality of your productions. I quoted you there because it was kind of a Eureka moment there for me as I said it with you. As a child back home, we loved rocks now later in life I have only started collecting rocks again after my aunt gifted me a cigar box grandpa’s superior agates that he had found. these are so precious to me, I am almost scared to polish them until I really feel confident. Another reason for me to continue to watch your content. Take care!

I left Oregon 20 years ago regretted it ever since. Finally at 53 I've decided to venture into the desert around las vegas after all these years. Can't find the sweet spots, but I've found pet wood, jasper and such. On the last trip we found large fossil pieces containing what looks like fully extended feather duster worms. My wife calls them angel wings. You're helping me with tumbling lol. But I've been trying vibrating tumbler for final steps and it's not going great. I have no patience to wait a month. Lol

I have 5lbs of labradorite that have been sitting around for months because I am afraid to start it…lol. Let me know if you want to try some Rock Shed polish and I will happily send you some. I think once you use it you will want to use it all the time. One change I have made with tumbling is using the ultrasonic cleaner after polish…It really does a great job getting rid of polish in the microfractures of the rock surface.
@AgateAriel
@AgateAriel Год назад
Oh thank you for your offer! I do have a PO Box if you are serious. Also what is your strategy for using the ultrasonic cleaner? Just water or do you have a cleaner you use? Do you use the heat settings?

When you go to Oregon take a raft (dirtbag) from Gold Hill to Grants Pass (About 10 miles) down the Rogue River. In many parts of the river the water is only about knee deep and you can find lots of agates, crystals, and other amazing rocks in the river. If you do this you need to do it at the hottest time of the year because the water will be ice cold (even if the air is 110 degrees)

Hi! Ok, wait, I'm having a moment here. The RU-vid suggestions scored a home run here. I found you by looking up how ultrasonic cleaners work. So, I knew I wasn't the only person in the world that compulsively picks up rocks and pockets them. I've always done it for as long as I can remember. Rocks are cool and you can learn a lot about geology. But there is a term for it? And a community? And wait, there is a channel from someone who lives in my area? (I live in the boundary waters area just outside of Ely.) Mind blown. So, hi neighbor. Nice to meet you. Have a sub from me. Congrats on the 12k and I'm sure you will hit 15k in no time at all. Happy hunting everyone.

thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and love for rocks.i too have many Itty kitties, my desire is to make a suncatcher with them . I am still trying to figure the best way to do this. I have considered using resin. Do you think the resin would block the luminous quality?

When cleaning off tumbled rocks, where is the best place/what is the best way to dispose of the water? Is it safe to just pour out onto the ground, or is there a better way or place?
@AgateAriel
@AgateAriel Год назад
Good question! Definitely not down a drain. I pour it into my landscaping rocks personally and rinse it with a hose so it doesn’t sit on top of the rocks. It also helps so grass doesn’t grow in that area.

Hi Ariel In the last stage of tumbling the polish stage I think you say you tumble them for about 2 weeks , is that 10 or 14 days, here in Australia 2 weeks means either 10 working days or 14 with the weekends, so bloody confusing.

Actually I had a different question. I am curious about getting in to this hobby with one of my kids BUT I have a latex allergy which means anything with natural rubber I can't use. Is it possible? I see a lot of rubber bands & things like that. I have done the research to find out most of the barrels are safe, but I can't find out about a lot of the other items on the tumblers & gaskets. I don't know if you would know but if you have any ideas on where to even find out without having to email every maker out there that would be awesome.

I would start by getting a Kansas rocks and minerals book to familiarize yourself with the rocks. Then go out and start looking! Some good places to start are actually landscaping rocks, gravel pits, lakes, rivers, and farmers fields!

The Rock Shed you said in the video - I get my grits from there for tumbling and NO WHERE ELSE because they are the best prices and the actual grits and amount unlike amazon and ebay which have really dissapointed me! Plus I live in South Dakota (Sioux Falls) so it's not super far from me - a few hours
