He is right about practice being key, I've gotten a little better over time. I'm sure I'll develop my style more eventually, don't give up, we all have our own unique views when it comes to art. I remember the concept artist for The Lion King having a very rounded style, and it was quite beautiful. Even though the movie took a lot from Kimba the White Lion.

Also, a thing that helps it you really wanna get the proportions right, put a grid over your reference photo and recreate that grid on the paper, you can slightly erase it and then draw what you see in each square. Hope that helped :)
@a-10warthog23
@a-10warthog23 2 года назад
Definitely helpful but I wouldn't use it too much. It's important to learn proportions in the sense of how lines relate to one another. A lot of that is lost in drawing in grid, and I often see some unnervingly "off" proportions in a lot of grid drawings. That all being said, it's definitely a tool to use - especially when making a larger piece with subject matter you're unfamiliar with or to help with placements of objects/etc. I would just suggest not totally relying on grids!

I know you mean well, but don’t beat yourself up over not practicing art. It should be something you enjoy, and you’re not enjoying it if you’re forcing yourself to draw all the time. Take it easy and draw when you want to, and don’t feel bad when you aren’t practicing. Skill comes from things other than just practice, like instruction and looking at other cool art you like. Enjoy your art :)
@abbiesmith8724
@abbiesmith8724 2 года назад
Don't feel guilty!! Art is for enjoyment, you don't have to do it out of obligation. Yeah it's great to squeeze in a sketch a day, but if you're not feeling it that's okay. I have to be in the right headspace for art and if I'm not I just don't enjoy it. If art is something you do for fun in your free time, never force yourself to do it.

There is bc the lead/graphite in standard writing pencils and drawing pencils are of different hardness, softness and darkness. The softer your pencil is the easier it is to use the lead/graphite so it gives darker lines. They can also be smudged as per your choice. Same for compressed charcoal or charcoal pencils. They are mostly available in 3 varients: hard, medium, soft. While there are I guess 24 sketching pencils. H to 9H, F, B, 2B to 14B.

For me understanding the shapes beneath the surface also helped a ton to get better at realistic drawings. Like, understanding that the eye in a rotating sphere in a hole, made drawing sensible eye lids and all around skin so much easier. The "why" made it easier to get to the "how" faster, if you know what I mean.

If you have a bit of sandpaper, scrub off the used parts of it! If not, you can always go the longer way by whittling it down with a sharp object (some blending sticks are handily pencil-sized, so you can just put those in a regular sharpener!)

Photorealism was my jam, back in the day. If I couldn't get it right the first try, I'd start over on a fresh piece. The worst drawing I ever undertook was a centered image (circular) full moon over the ocean with a pure black surrounding frame. The center image was easy enough, but the black framing was absolute torture. Three 8B pencils later, it was done. I learned so much from the process, though.
