Mravinsky at the highest point of musical intelligence and control of the orchestra. The 1960s-1970s were a brilliant period for the Leningrad Philharmonic under his tenure. Thanks to Andrey Zolotov who directed this dress rehearsal and who approached Mravinsky during rehearsals and concerts to get a closer point of view about the artist himself. Great film from 1973.
Wow! I never knew the 3rd movement was supposed to be this fast! For years I used to sit in disgust with conductors playing the 3rd movement fast. Who would know best? Maybe the guy who premiered the piece!! Mravinsky was awesome.
Few days ago I had the privilege to attend to a performance of this very symphony in this very hall, the legendary Philarmonia of Saint Petersburg. It was an overwhelming experience which I will never forget for the rest of my life!
An magistristral dirigent conducting an absolute strong composition from an greatest composer Mr Dmitri Chostakovitch!!!! Mravinski my first preferate dirigent.
many thanks for this deeply appreciated post of my favorite music of all, conducted by the conductor and orchestra entrusted with its premiere. Am sorry I never had the chance to hear Mravinsly live though I have many of his recordings.
But of course !!!! Why would Bernstein have anything "special" with Shostakovitch ?!? Just listent to the terrible beginning with the basses, strings, such intensity in the first 3 seconds...and all is said !
