Featuring amateur archaeologist, enthusiast and multi-award winning investigative filmmaker, Simcha Jacobovici, The Naked Archaeologist is an irreverent, entertaining and eye-opening journey into the fascinating archaeology of the ancient world. Along the way, new discoveries are made, lost treasures revealed, and ancient mysteries uncovered.
At the Vatican in Rome stands the most iconic Christian church in the world, St. Peter's Basilica. It's named after the one-time fisherman turned saint St Peter. According to Christian tradition, Peter is buried deep in the catacombs underneath the basilica. But is there any actual archaeological proof that St. Peter is there?

Peter's footless body was found - they cut him don quickly cutting off his feet, which would have been nailed in his crucifixion ! During crucifixion, they were not nailed through hands and feet as often portrayed as the weight of the body would have ripped through. They were nailed through the ankle bones, where there is a gap and through the wrist above the hand where again there is a gap between the bones, which would have held the body and been as painful as possible.

If Peter was in Rome why doesn’t Paul mention it in his writings. He wrote of the many visitors that had come to see him. If Peter was indeed the Bishop of Rome don’t you think Paul would have mentioned it, after all Peter was one of the Apostles of Christ. In fact Peter was rebuked by Paul in Antioch because of some of his teaching (Galatians 2:11-21). The first official Pope was in the 6th century, there were many times when there wasn’t a Pope and other times there was more than one, so much for the unbroken line of Popes. During the Great Occidental Schism there was as many as three of them who claimed to be the true Pope, perhaps the Holy Spirit couldn’t make His mind up. That is why this claim to be Christ’s Vicar on Earth is ridiculous.

2 Peter 3:3-8 “First, you must understand this: In the last days people who follow their own desires will appear. These disrespectful people will ridicule God’s promise by saying, “What’s happened to his promise to return? Ever since our ancestors died, everything continues as it did from the beginning of the world.” They are deliberately ignoring one fact: Because of God’s word, heaven and earth existed a long time ago. The earth appeared out of water and was kept alive by water. Water also flooded and destroyed that world. By God’s word, the present heaven and earth are designated to be burned. They are being kept until the day ungodly people will be judged and destroyed. Dear friends, don’t ignore this fact: One day with the Lord is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.” Isaiah 28:22 “But as for you, don’t start mocking, or your chains will become tighter; for I have heard from the Lord of the Heavenly Armies about destruction, and it is decreed against the whole land.” Jude 1:17-20 “Dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ said before. They said to you, “In the last times there will be people who laugh about God, following their own evil desires which are against God.” These are the people who divide you, people whose thoughts are only of this world, who do not have the Spirit. But dear friends, use your most holy faith to build yourselves up, praying in the Holy Spirit.”

None of this evidence is conclusive. Regarding the ossuary in Jerusalem inscribed with Simon son of Jonah, both of those names were very common at the time. Whether or not relics actually belong to the supposed individual, makes no difference in my opinion. Christianity is about the message and teachings of Christ, and the Bible. This is why the Vatican has no official stance on the authenticity of relics or archaeology. I do wish that they would cooperate more with archaeologists. From a historical perspective it would be interesting to see if science can prove or disprove certain relics. I suppose the church doesn't want to be involved in a negative media circus in the event that relics, including St Peters, would be declared as inauthentic.

Im not an archaelogist but is it not that to prove scientifically that the bones are St Peter’s, you have to do some DNA testing comparison to one of St Peter’s relatives, carbon-dating, etc? If not then tradition would be enough. Why would the thousands of Christians of Rome risk their live and the lives of their families for something like a figment of the imagination like the whole story of St. Peter being in Rome and dying as it was told. Even non-Christian historians like the Roman senator Tacitus confirmed this in his writing.

Dear Dale, You are right. In order to confirm by DNA testing that human remains were a specific person one needs to compare the remains with those of a close relative. It is my understanding that the bones were revealed to be that of a middle-aged man who had led a physically vigorous life. That describes Peter. The early Christians revered those among them who had lived holy lives and especially those who had even died for the faith. Churches were erected over their graves with the altar built directly over the burial spot. Thus began the Catholic practice of having a sacred relic from a holy person ( or in English, a Saint) placed inside the altar used at Mass. I think that what I just said would not convince an archeologist that the bones must be Peter's bones because DNA testing is impossible. Yet, the history strongly suggests that the bones very likely are his because they match the story of Peter's life and his burial and with the altar of the original St Peter's placed directly over his traditional burial spot. ( The original St Peter's was built by order of Emperor Constantine in the 300's. Twelve hundred years later the same basilica had become decrepit and even dangerous so the current church was built in the 1500's in the same place with the altar in the same spot over the traditional burial place of St Peter.) Thank you.

You keep saying “according to tradition “ but should be saying “According to the scriptures.” Also you did not finish Matt 14:16. I was in Rome, and was in the prison of Peter and Paul. In the Bible, Peter is writing from Rome. While Saint Peter was saying the underground Masses in Latin, Paul was in Greece trying to convince the Greeks to stop worshipping false gods like Venus, etc... I was also in the catacombs where the writings on the walls are thoroughly Catholic from the first century. Especially the Eucharist pics of our faith. This is why I cannot watch anything from anyone who is not a Catholic nor knows the New Testament facts. Christ founded the church upon Peter the rock in which he called him. “And the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” Finishes that scripture. One day you will believe in your Messiah. It is important to Christianity, particularly Catholicism, that Peter was in Rome to establish a link between Rome and Jesus through the alleged unity between Peter and Paul. This is important in order to obfuscate the Jewish origins of what we call Christianity. This Roman link perpetuates the fiction of the Jews being the betrayers of Jesus and calling for his death. In Simcha's interview with a military historian sheds light on the role of Saul of Tarsus as a Roman spy, I see this Roman move to defang the Jewish liberation movement of Jesus and make it a personal salvation movement which constitutes modern Christianity. Throughout the Old Testament the Jewish nation was punished when it went off script (scripture). Prophets then came to lead them back to God's laws. This is why Jesus invoked the sign of Jonah. He was saying to return to God's laws and return to Israel. Then with God on their side they could be liberated from Roman rule. Not the common interpretation concerning death, burial and resurrection. The New Testament, compiled by the Roman church, highjacked the teachings of Jesus and established the "believe in Jesus" theology rather than the ethical system of Jesus. This subterfuge is most evident in the verse concerning paying taxes to Caesar. Unlikely that Jesus, a Jew, would instruct people to use coins with a graven image.

@@thecrew1871 Well, that's what Paul claims at certain points in time. But at others his decision to go to the Gentiles seems to be driven by the fact that he was generally pretty unsuccessful at converting Jews to the Christian way. Despite supposedly being appointed as the apostle to the Gentiles, when he came to a new city he usually tried to convert the Jews there first. When he failed he would turn to the Gentiles because they were far easier to convert. He had much more difficulty with the Jews because they actually knew their Scriptures and could properly evaluate Paul's scriptural arguments ... if you can call them 'arguments'.
@thecrew1871
@thecrew1871 4 года назад
TheSmithDorian TheSmithDorian I agree that he usually went to the Jews first but being as his calling was to go to the Gentiles he wasn't very successful. I feel that Paul at first was led to persecute the Jewish Christians so that in order to be successful in his ministry God wanted the Jews to reject Paul so he would be forced to minister to the Gentiles. If I remember correctly he & Timothy were called by Peter & those that were in Jerusalem to answer for & explain why Paul said circumcision was not necessary for the Gentiles to join the Christian church. I think it was at this meeting that Peter & Paul got into a heated argument about their differences and wound up coming to an agreement that Peter would minister to the Jews and Paul would minister to the Gentiles. Peter never really liked or accepted Paul but agreed to their arrangement as it was something he could live with. I would love to know what the other apostles thought of Paul.

To You and all your replies, Paul is an apostle for the Gospel of grace according to the Mystery! It is not the same Gospel as the kingdom/new covenant Gospel! It is the Gospel, when you belief, the Holy Spirit baptizes you into the body of Christ irrevocable! 1 Corinthians 9:17 For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me. Ephesians 3:2 if ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: Colossians 1:25 whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; 1 Corinthians 3:10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. 1 Timothy 1:16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. Paul is the first member of the body of Christ in the dispensation of grace revealed to him first! Romans 11:13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: He calls it "MY GOSPEL" three times! Romans 2:16 in the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. Romans 16:25 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, 2 Timothy 2:8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel Yes sorry to tell you, there are TWO gospels (good news) one to Israel (12 Apostles/little flock/heavenly kingdom on earth as prophesied) the other to the gentiles after Israel rejected the first one, this is the one preached by Paul (Gospel of grace according to mystery/body of Christ/not prophesied) Here are the scripture for it! Galatians 2:2 And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain. Galatians 2:6 But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man’s person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me: 7 but contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; 8 (for he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:) 9 and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. Who was the head of the Jerusalem Church? Peter, James! Where do the leader of a church stay? where the church is! Where do you think Peter stayed? Jerusalem! Why? Waiting for Jesus to come back! Where is the place of Jesus's second coming? Jerusalem! Why would Peter be in Rome? No reason! Peter died in Jerusalem!

The Roman historian Tacitus (allegedly) recorded that Nero used his GARDENS for the "spectacle' of executing the Christians. His "Gardens" would have been the "Gardens of Maecenas" on the Esquiline Hill next to the Colosseum, the estate of the Emperor Augustus' protege who willed his property to the Imperial family. It is therefore NOT likely that they would then have TAKEN the corpse all the way ACROSS the Tiber River to bury it in a PAGAN necropolis near the Vatican Hill!! It is also NOT likely that the Roman officials overseeing the executions would have ALLOWED any Christians (who would have been IMMEDIATELY IDENTIFIED as such and thus IMMEDIATELY ARRESTED for execution) to have TAKEN the remains of any of the Christian victims; even if they had been related to them. So it is HIGHLY DUBIOUS that even IF Simon Peter was IN Rome at the time, his body would have been BURIED and BY CHRISTIANS WHERE it is alleged to be. And curiously enough, in his (alleged) second and LAST epistle "from Babylon" he DOESN'T mention ANY persecution of Christians going on for which he felt his death was impending. This is all later CHURCH LEGEND with RETRO-activated "archaeology" for "establishing" that there WAS a burial monument to Simon Peter in Rome during the (alleged) Second Christian Century. But then, WHY have taken almost a HUNDRED YEARS to have built one IF it was authentic?? And we must remember that there was NO formal inscription on it dedicating it to St. Peter; ONLY GRAFFITTI!

I am not an expert but I do know that criminals and everyone else executed in Rome during this time period were gathered up, put on carts then hauled to the Tiber river and dumped. It's amazing how little time it takes for zealots to step in and construct a story to support what they want to believe. A good example is the Moses story and the First Temple story but if it makes people happy and gives them something believe in then I am happy.
