I think you expected too much bro. From the jump it was pretty clear this was homage to old school 360/PS3 games. I already played Ragnarok, the fact that this game is more cut and dry is a big relief for me personally
As i said elsewhere. People are just not interested in fun games anymore. This is why the 360/PS3 era was so much better as it was full of fun games lol .
Been noticing this happening A LOT with Luke. Don't worry, in a year we'll probably get a video of him revisiting this game and saying much better things lol.
I think you're confusing "homage" with "same". Doom 2016 was an homage to the original Doom, but it vastly improved the gameplay with new mechanics, better controls, etc. Evil West, on the other hand, seems to be regressing toward old school mechanics - waiting for abilities to recharge, for example, is a horribly outdated mechanic in a time when most games push the player to actually engage with the combat in order to recharge their abilities (again, see Doom).
@@richardpatton6691 I don't think this game is like doom though, more like God of War where you wait for your abilities to recharge but are still capable. Have you played this game or are you just referencing what luke said? There are slight similarities to doom but this is AA God of War, RDR, DMC monster baby
Any good play testing should involve UX testing, feedback, adjustment, rinse, repeat. So if a user is having an issue with a design choice, it's probably a bad design choice.
Yeah people expect AA with limited budgets to be doing what hundreds of millions of dollars bring. Overblown third party games with too many movies instead of gameplay :) . I much prefer AA even if they don't get it all right in every game.
@@DEVILTAZ35 His reviews Are offten too biased to games he likes. I remember he said last of us 2 had bad Ai but never talked about the Ai in Ghost of Tushimia which he praised. He also went back on what he said about Cyberpunk after hyping it.
@@DEVILTAZ35 do you say that because of his reviews in general or his evil west review? Because from your first comment it seems you are excited for the game and his review is that he strongly recommends it lol
This game is awesome. I think this was harkening back to those lol random 360/ps3 games and it’s not perfect but the flaws are not as detrimental as Luke makes them out to be. I feel like a lot of these criticisms could easily be said about the AC games especially the newest trilogy. If you’re on the fence I’d say check it out.
@@Sharingon700 Yeah they sure were. I am not really a fan of many modern movies today lol. I think Shrek is the last time i really enjoyed a modern movie lol
This is the best review so far that I've seen. No one else mentioned only 4 boss battles. I think that should have been made a bigger deal for other reviews.
@@DEVILTAZ35 no they're not, boss battles are designed to test your abilities as a player and provide satisfaction to beat. Were you born in the 2000s by any chance?
Skill Up's review (and most of his reviews) speak from multiple perspectives that aren't just his own, and thats what makes them so enjoyable and agreeable. He tries to see what kind of person would enjoy something, and also provides input on whether he enjoyed something or not. It leaves room to have conversations about nuance in video game design and preference Luke tends to just base his entire review on his enjoyment alone, and then pass that off as how the game should be defined for someone stumbling upon his video. He may say/not realize that is the case, but that is how he speaks. This is why it is much more "I agree entirely with Luke" or "I could not disagree more with Luke" for most people. To be honest it doesn't exactly breed healthy discussion on enjoying media imo to speak this way, but everyone has their preferences on reviews which is up to them
C'mon, freedom fighters wasn't that linear, you could select the order in witch you wanted to clear the objectives, sometimes slightly changing enemy disposition and quantity in the level. Also, the possibility to use squad commands, added a bit of strategy in how you can position the team member to cover or push forward. It was not a perfect game by any means, but I don't think it is the perfect example of linearity. ... I do not know, but today I pray to see a good (even on the light side) tactical shooter with a decently deep squad commands
Does anyone else watches these videos to fall asleep? Not saying in a bad way, I just find them very soothing and distracting so always put one one for naps.
Dude i never thought somebody else might be doing this hahahaha. Like, the sound quality is really good and he's very eloquent without screaming and yelling into the mic which is perfect for falling asleep to. Though I often rewatch the videos cuz I'm actually interested in the review 😅
07:12 yeah its called a cooldown cycle and its interesting to manage if the game is hard enough 15:50 hidden enough for me 20:25 that is strange 21:20 weird bug 🤔 23:01 price is key point
Evil West is excellent in all aspects, a breath of fresh air with great combat and atmosphere...,It's a fckn Sin to use lackluster in the same sentence with this great game...
Been loving your videos recently, just getting back into gaming after almost a decade and I’m so surprised and pleased with the quality of gaming content on RU-vid these days.
@@gamingbytetv665 Yeah I've learned that since leaving my original reply. Started realizing his content was rather uncritical, stumbled upon hbomberguy's video (love his content but never got into the gaming stuff until recently), and then did a google search for Luke Stephens. Pretty fucking beat.
@@willr3891 Yeah I did the same thing. Never liked the guy tbh but most of his takes seemed nitpicky at best, or slightly reworded from someone else's content as I found out from hbombers video. He did a dogshit "review" of the last of us remake and the title is "they didn't even try" and I'm like, that's rich coming from you 😂.
@@gamingbytetv665 They're (edit: his videos like that) great! I'm very familiar with his non-gaming work and that particular side of RU-vid. I do English and history. Glad you enjoy :))
well loooooks like im waitin for a sale on this one...really liked the idea but its unfortunate to see the tech issues here....everyone's fingers crossed for Calisto though right
What is so sad is that is played character looks like the most awesome character I've ever seen and would love to play this model in almost any other game.
I love when video games say they take 10 hours to be. I literally sit at a game sometimes 6 to 7 hours and then I look at how much I completed and it shows 12% 10% are you? I literally spent seven hours and it’s not like I was constantly dying up like that. Literally, I was going through the game pretty smoothly might’ve gotten stuck for about an hour maybe two but sometimes it takes me weeks to finish the game. These people are finishing it in a day or two I’m doing something wrong.
These people that say they hate the game must also got a war actually when I was playing God of war Ragnarok, I actually was looking at videos and there was people saying that the god of war series was horrible. Are you kidding me? What’s wrong with people these days?
Thr game was awesome, I'd buy dlc right now for sure. It's literally western god of war. You might have to turn down the lock on aim Assist or it'll start aiming at enemies when you're trying to shoot tnt. Story is meh, and cut kind of abruptly but it's a joy to play.
This is one of the only times I have to disagree with Luke. I got this game for Christmas, and I gotta say, I've had a blast playing through it. It's basically if God of War had a baby with Doom Eternal. The gameplay is just mindless crazy slaughter, which might be boring for some people, but I found it refreshingly simple. All in all, if anyone sees this comment who is on the fence about getting this game, I would highly recommend it if you love simple games that are just *fun.*
I tried with this game, I got a few chapters in but it just wasn’t for me and it’s a shame because I liked the concept of westerns and fantasy. I lost interest in it completely when I realised the boss fight in each chapter was the same and while I don’t mind a gameplay loop being repeated, i like that repeated loop with something like Mafia 3. I also think people are being incredibly harsh in the comments here.
Yes man I played it but I give up almost on the end of the game I may come back to finish I just got bored because is the same from the start of the game to the end
That was my problem but I gave up after a few chapters. I appreciated the concept of a fantasy western but that isn’t enough to keep me interested in the game.
The game is not bad at all. BUT…it’s definitely too easy. Even on the hardest difficulty the monsters are not a challenge at all, specially considering how broken the weapons are. If you’re a kid you will love this game, as a adult, the game is not good enough because it’s shallow. Easy bosses as well, the very first boss only have 2 attacks and you just dodge left and you never get hit. Btw, the mechanics are great, the only reason players complain is because just like in this video, they never use the kick and that’s why they die stupid deaths
Cut and dry action with a straight shot story is sometimes the best thing a game can do. I don’t like drawn out, overly complicated, boring, grindy games. Most open world games should have been semi-open world games with a lot more focus instead. Not all games need to be 40-100 hours long. 10-30 hours is often the best range of length.
I've seen a few reviewers miss the mark on this one in my opinion. It's there opinion, but I've never disagreed more. And I hate when some reviewers gripe is it feels like a game from the 360 Era or whatever. As if that's negative. I'm still playing games from that era that are better then alot of modern games
I think you need to reappraise your view on this one 😂 I'll sum it up for you , yes it's very linear like classic games used to be but the combat is spot on 😉
You cant have everything unlocked after 1 playthrough. There is simply not enough gold to buy all the perks. You need at another playthrough on new game+ to have enough gold to be able to buy all the perks.
My boy has had the same 2 zits on his forehead for the past month lmaoo.. a better man than me cuz I would’ve BEEN tried to pop them and ended up with 2 sores on my forehead instead
Isn't this pretty status quo for Focus Entertainment? This publisher seems to have a long history of treating developers horribly, and pushing games out before they are ready.
Summary: short gameplay (10 hours), weak story, repeatitive combat, low variety of enemies. It sounds to me 6/10. I had high expectations for this one. Also they’re asking pretty much the full price for ps5 (70 euros). I guess I’ll wait for a discount which would be coming sooner than Gotham Knights.
Yes it's like darkwatch and gow had a deformed, ineffective baby with downs syndrome. I've heard it also looks like a 360 game with a few more whistles. Makes it even more pathetic that it can only hit 1080 at 60 games on ps5. Ragnarok is running at 1440 with almost 100 games for me. The laziness of some companies is just sad
@@Nuuk_ Sorry what i think of Third person God of war . It was better on PS2 lol. it should have just stayed more like a fast paced platformer as that was actually fun. My PS3 plays PS2 and 1 games thankfully lol.
@@John-996 Sadly so many are just not into fun anymore. They are into depressingly long stories about relationships and other shit i couldn't care less about when i am shooting people in the face or ripping their head off lol. Games are meant to be fun otherwise what the hell is the point lol
@@John-996 Yeah true but i don't see any point in playing anything depressing. Plague Tale Requieum was insane in parts but hardly any of it was actually fun. You know a game is in trouble when the most fun was knocking down acorns in the water with a sling shot as that was the only time the stupid thing was accurate when i got that achievement lol.
I kinda like the look of it though lol it kinda reminds me of the 360/ps3 era where we were just getting all kinds of bonkers games that made no sense but they had there times of enjoyment
Thank god this game exists. It’s the gaming equivalent of a bad 80’s action movie. In other words, its stupid, it’s fun and it’s totally freaking awesome.
I think the whole feeling like a game from 2013 thing was exactly what they were looking for. I'm here for it and honestly....I missed looking forward to games that are just fun dumb games done well
Exactly. Not everyone has enough time to dedicate to a huge, open-world epic. It's nice to be able to play a game you can enjoy and finish in a short time.
@@patrickdoherty4527 I understand the sentiment but it doesn't do the small linear design well either, you're paying close to AAA price for a 2013 video game with technical and design flaws. You might as well play Indie games, other than the lack of 3D in the space they're well produced and written.
@@Ezichim That's fair. To be honest, I'm making more of a general point - I haven't played Evil West. Are there Indie Games which are as good as this game?
Unrelated note on Spaghetti Westerns: a number of of their soundtracks were composed by Ennio Morricone, who is considered by some to have been "the Italian John Williams". For anyone interested, I highly recommend the album "Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone".
I want to give you some honest feedback for your reviews. I am a huge fan of your long reviews for open world rpg games. It really seems like you dig deep into the game, you have fun doing it and that's great. However, you review EVERY game like if it wants to be an open world triple A title. Which is just not the case for games like Stray and Evil West. They want you to have 5-15 hours of fun and that's it. Those games make very clear what they want to be, they succeed in it and don't add any shady mircotransactions. Of course you can have your own opinion on everything but not recommending something because it doesn't fit your taste feels unfair.
Having to commend a game for not having microtransactions as a selling point for the game being good is some pathetic straw grabbing, have some standards and a respectable level of expectations for God sakes
When you said how unique it is due to the cowboy/vampire themes..... you described the plot of Darkwatch which was released on Ps2 lol If anything this looks like it was heavily inspired by Darkwatch, but with 3rd person instead of 1st person gameplay.
I couldn’t disagree more I loved this game beat it an hard the first play through now I’m playing evil. This is homage to linear 360 PlayStation games and I love it … turn your brain off and murder monsters. It’s challenging even if bosses are repetitive!!
Luke said vampire slaying cowboy and I immediately thought of Darkwatch. Maybe I'm just wearing nostalgic blinders but that was a good game! Now I want to play it. We need a remake of Darkwatch.
Freedom Fighters was NOT a linear, repetitive game, the levels had multiple routes and you had the options to disable enemy key fortifications of your choosing which were also optional to ultimately take on the fortified stronghold.
This game looks like a meat and potatoes game, just a simple fun old fashioned video game, but I'd think that the price tag seems a bit high but I'll definitely buy it when the price comes down a bit
At the end of the day it depends on you. Some things may hit for you where it may miss for others. It just be like that sometimes. This looks like one of those experiences.
@@WetWattz for cases like these buying depends on the price of it as well as how long the game is. For a less than 10 hour long game like this paying 60 dollars should be out of the question.
The video: Evil West is poorly executed The comments: YOU ARE SOOO WRONG! 😂😂😂 I couldn't agree more with everyone's comments. I'm 6 hours into the game playing on hard difficulty and I'm having a blast. I didn't feel so cool and badass playing a videogame since Devil May Cry 5. I don't need every game to be emotional, sad or controversial. A simple story fighting different types of enemies and bosses until you get to the final boss feels refreshing. The combat is by far where this game shines although is not perfect. If you lived the ps3/360 era I highly recommend it
Having played a few hours of the game, it's a comfortable 7/10 for me. Reminds me of Call of Juarez Gunslinger and Binary Domain. It knows what it is and it's not out there to reinvent the wheel or be an over-budgeted, try-hard AAA game. And it's 30 bucks on Steam in my region which I think is fairly priced for this type of game more so once it's discounted and patched months from now. It's a mid-2000 game released in 2022 and with the right set of expectations, there is fun to be had.
@@christoforo22 No, I understood what you were saying. If we are going the "what if" route, I probably wouldn't feel any different about the pricing if I am a millionaire. But I'm not a millionaire and never have I paid 70 bucks in my region.
I wanna play this game but it looks so bad on ps5. There isn't an option to turn off motion blur. The gameplay feels fun but I feel nauseous looking at it
I got this game for free on ps4 network and it was great, its a brain off game. I dont need to outsmart and one-up the computer at every turn like you need to do in other games. I for one am getting real tired of games that are meant only for the "pro-gamer". I cant spend 18 hours a day playing, i can spare maybe 2 hours a day if any at all which puts some games outside of my ability to finish like fallout or dark souls. So evil west allowed me to play and feel like i accomplished somthing.
