Dark Watch was one of my favourite games back in the day, and I was thinking of the relevance just before you mentioned it. Good to see I'm not the only one.
This is like one of those action games you would see on the shelf for renting as a kid, games like: “DEATH DULE” or, “LAST BATTLE”. I’ve put 4 hours into Evil West and I’ve been having a blast lol
Love GmanLives but I couldn't disagree more on this game. It's not an overly ambitious or smart game but it's the most fun I've had this year in a game.
@@13Gangland I put a hundred hours in Elden Ring but it doesn't let me DBZ instant transmission over to an undead gunslinger and juggle him in the air with a steampunk Tesla revolver.
@3:55 I don't get what you don't understand here or why it justified the joke. A guy and a girl are doing lots of illegal buisinesses and have claimed a lot of assets. And the government wants to have that stuff for themselfes since it is "Pretty important" Like seriously, what don't you understand about the line in the cutscenes?
Its honestly annoying when a complaint is a character talking to themselves. Like really? Youve never talked to yourself while either completing some task or out of frustration?
It reminds me of an iconic 80s and 90s action movie. The plot is serviceable, the characters are grizzled and tough, the aesthetics are on point, and the violence is gratuitous and plentiful.
He gman doesn't like a game he will do everything in his power to make and show "flaws" . Prime examples from this video: game doesn't have a reload button is bad. And reclassifying normal enemies as bosses so you can say they are bad. Dude spends 3 minutes straight talking about how bad the "bosses" except he is showing and referring to mis-tier enemies. These enemies don't have boss health bars and will spawn together, the devs do not consider these bosses. I know this because the things they do considered bosses have a boss health bar....
Fantastic review. I honestly still kinda want to play the game but when it gets a big discount. These days we all have to think twice before buying these expensive games.
dont let some random guy's opinion let you decide what to play. if the game looks fun then buy it. im sure there are plenty of games that you love that he cant stand.
@@user-od8yh8xs9u yeah but also I rather just wait until the game has a discount. I can't just simply waste between $66 and $78 for a new released game. It has to have some good value after spending this much. This game looks like a $50 max to me (unless they actually add some other modes for coop or survival mode with coop)

Common GMan L. Literally one of my favorite games ever made. It came out only a few months ago and I've already played it all the way through five times.
Vanquish I'd say isn't revolutionary, and its a game I like. Simply put its a game that never reached its full potential, movement while fast and has more options than typical Gears of War like games. It's very limited in terms of Ariel maneuvers, the most you can do is a dive kick into an enemy and cover for a bit of shooting mid air. even on foot theres a sheer disconect between the environment and you options, where cover can slow you down (like trying to hop over) and is full of invisable walls. Or animations to do something as simple as climbing a ladder, or jump down a ladder. It's not a simple animation but, more of an Re4 style prompt to climb it. Not a good thing to have movement and combat stop for as simple as a ladder in a movement action game. The melee system is stupidly limiting and handicaps you more than actively helps. Why do a punch when it takes away all your energy for movement? The enemy themselves aren't that interesting or varied, just robot designs that I can't remember besides their color. The levels themselves are very forgetable and basic as well, shooting on a small cargo train thingy, escorting a truck of soldiers, very, very slowly in a dark tunnel... I could go on, again, I love Vanquish, but it has so much missed potential and a lot of flaws. I really wish we got a sequal. Its an okay game with solid combat thats just not as flushed out as it could be. Its not revolutionary, it did nothing new besides add slide dashing and very raw melee combat to a Gears of War esque shooter, but besides that it is extremely unmemorable and flawed.
Just beat it, it’s a good game, simple and fun. The thing that made me laugh was you still rave about doom which is technically in the same ballpark of which you speak, outdated.
I love ya Gman, but the cutscenes you played had the opposite effect on me. I think I can really get into the dumb campiness they're going for here. I love this type of shit, it looks awesome XD
I find this terrible personally because its not playing to the strengths of their budget. This game suffers massively from having AAA aspirations while it looks and plays like a 10+ year old game.
@@omarcomming722 honestly, it playing like a 10 year old game is a positive in my book. It's been too long since there was a game like this that just wanted to be fucking cool. It feels like how Red Dead Revolver feels in my memory. A lot of people tend to look at it with a far too clinical lense. I see it in the same vein as an 80s or 90s action movie. Grizzled tough guys, cool premise, passable story, and gratuitous violence.
@@angeleaterstudios1004 That's fair and I agree generally, but IMO such games require their gameplay and presentation to be perfect because that's literally all there is to them, kind of like Doom 2016 wouldn't have worked if it wasn't so polished. This game has none of that and is just lacking all around for me, it both looks and plays like a 2010 game in all the bad ways, although it's definitely a subjective feeling.
As much as I enjoy and trust G-Man's word on some of these games, his difficulty to admit that down-time has an actual purpose feels deeply flawed and that's all I'm gonna say about his reviews. EDIT: Seeing how people are missing the point of what I'm trying to say, I think GMan's DIFFICULTY to admit that down-time has a purpose is a sign that he lacks the fundamental understanding of what makes down-time so important in some games. Lots of games do this, not just for story purposes, but to give the player some time to breathe and admire the world around them, if they wish to, or to ponder on previous dialogue.
Uhh, but he explicitly SAYS that down time has purpose to it and is good to have. He just said that this game misuses its downtime to do nothing of importance and to waste your time.
@@GBDupree You didn't read what I said. I said he STRUGGLES to ADMIT that down-time has a purpose. Whether he admits it or not is ultimately irrelevant if by principle he believes that all down-time is boring filler.
@@lonthius3918 Down time is important, the problem is restricting movement, in my view. DMC1 just had you go from point A to point B between fights and it was fine, lots of games nowadays have you move super slowly for some reason.
Damn, that is kinda sad, 'cause videos looked so cool. Still gonna give this game a chance, who knows, after all it's a rare opportunity to play western with vampires. Darkwatch was great, though also kinda repetitive and boring in some places. BTW, are there gonna be reviews for full versions of Prodeus, Cultic and second chapter of Turbo Overkill?
This is a pretty bad review because your supposed to list goods and bad’s about the game while it was only bad’s. This is a critique not a review, a pretty big difference because people come to see an unbiased stance about a games gameplay, graphics, and story. According to this video, this game is the worst game to come out this year and is a 0/10 game
I have to admit, i have never laughed at a video game character model more than this game, he does have a good point jessie looks pretty goofy carrying an entire gun shop on his back
The whole premise of the game is goofy, it's supposed to be goofy. Dude completely missed the point, you can tell when he says "the locations don't even look like a western"...
@@vee1766 Geez Luize. Ofcourse a nut-case Aussie like 3GMan would not understand an TeslaPunk Weird West setting... oh, crap, but he did review that Immersive Occult West Weird WEST game some time ago. I guess he is just suffering from dementia at his old age.
I think I'll still buy this. I've grown tired of so many games taking itself so seriously. Every AAA game from Sony, Ubi, and many others has all this hand holding, forced exposition from characters, melodramatic cutscenes, goofy ranking systems where you can't kill lowly enemies because of a number hovering above their head, can't explore, can't figure stuff out on your own, etc. Many times I just want to shoot at shit, hear some cheesy dialogue, and be done in a few days. I've had more fun with these AA type games the past few years than I do most AAA games. Even though critically, the AAA are better in most ways. But they are so manufactured and purpose built for awards and mass sales that I can't stomach them anymore.
Not to mention, these AA games are just more creative. Like Steelrising or Biomutant or The Chant. Sure, they have lower production values, but these are games that AAA devs are too afraid of making and that’s exactly what we need more of these days instead of remake after reboot after 9th sequel in the franchise.
Wait, Shadow Warrior 3 is one of your favorites of this year? You haven't played it since release, did you? They totally ruined the game with all the updates, by making the shotgun useless for example. Seriously, the shotgun now has about the same range as the sword but less damage.
1:35 main difference between Darkwatch and Evil West is that in Darkwatch you have good looking female characters like Cassidy and Tala.....Tala is so good
Soo, At 1:57 you say the story goes "Off the rails, And downright confusing to follow" but at 3:05 admit to skipping the cut scenes, That's some weird logic bro.
The game is sh*t though. Maybe standards are so low some people think it's playable in 2024 but I tried this via gamepass & it's literally just "small corridor, climb past obstacle, arena combat, cutscene" rinse repeat. It's also bogged down by excessively pointless upgrades & difficulty which is determined by throwing more & more enemies at the player (like it's Doom with clunky controls).
I don't pay attention to any youtubers that make videos complaining about videos games. I only came here to leave this comment, which I did during the add for the beginning of the video
One of the new marketing strategies is paying reviewers to create good and bad reviews about the product in order to create a discussion about the product. The discussion gets consumers invested in the product, potentially increasing the chances of consumers buying the product to try it for themselves in order to create their own opinions about the product.
I hate to say it, but this is easily your most irritating review ever. I don't know if you expected a game with the open worldiness and/or pacing and antics of a Last of us or God of War 2018 but it somehow seems so. Catch is, both are games Evil West never wanted to be or even rival. This is a blast from the past in the taste of the first Gears of War or Vanquish or Bulletstorm: silly, testosterone filled, going straight ahead with corridor level design (which is nothing bad I should remind you) and a campiness Ash would draw his hat for (or his chainsaw). It is specifically made for people who want to embrace such a blast from the past and who want nothing more than to play a game without all the modern gaas and gacha bs crammed into. People like me. And when I take a look at the comment sections of most reviews I don't seem to be alone with this. Oh well, at least your review of Evil West gets me very curious for your inevitable review of Calisto Protocol, because that obviously is going to hit the same note (albeit with better graphics and sound design). And that's also something.
Dont listen to this guy . If good old single player action games are your thing , go for retro games . There are many underrated games to love about. And Evil west still objectively sucks .
@@Snyperwolf91 Didn't know a retro type of game could not exist in this day and age among other, more modern type of gaming experiences... And claiming that it sucks is quite subjective - maybe you are not the target here. But will probably be a great gaming experience for many others.
@@bluwolf9357 And the game still quality-wise sucks with its nostalgicly bad graphics out of the xbox360 while the gameplay could be much better if it doesnt slog so hard because of HP-bloated enemies , unnecessary walking segments as shimming through cracks / slopes /cliffs without any danger whatsoever , braindead puzzles that no one asked for , linear level-design that isnt opened up again ( doesnt need to be open world , atleast having open levels like in Duke 3D or in Unreal with real secrets in them ) , wave based arena-combat because making good enemy placings in videogames is seemingly WAY TOO HARD for the devs to do and an Level up system that wasnt really needed in this game. I mean if you have fun with the game then its fine because this isnt about taste that i speak off. Having fun isnt the problem but saying "dont listen to this guy" and having not any good argument whatsoever that underlines your claims is not only open for critic but total BS too.
It's just out on GamePass and it's not flashy, its not fancy, but it is fun. The combat can be a little wonky, i think the reliance on thr trigger buttons is awkward, but overall its a solid and fun linear story action game.
Funny, you and skillup normally share the same opinions on games but this time you are like yin and yang 🤪 I’ll wait for a sale, if you two don’t share the same opinion on a game the secure bet is to wait for a sale 🤪

Literally the first thing I said when I saw the trailer for this was "This reminds me of Darkwatch." Glad to hear even the first level pays homage to that similarity
I enjoyed this game a lot, I am very sick of sandbox sidequest fetch in most video games. I truly appreciate a return to form factor because I don't want to play some games for hrs upon hrs doing boring quests. Being able to do sick combos and shoot shit with a ok story sometimes works better with the gameplay compared to a good story and boring gameplay. I don't get how the gameplay is bland, you can combo juggle in many different ways and you have parries and moves that hit enemies out of their frame animations. This is prob one the few reviews from you that I wondered we played the same game? I played this solo on the hardest difficulty and I was having fun switching up i dealt with specific vampires with my electric fist punch or the electric grab.
Currently waiting for this game to install. Despite the negative review, I read the comments, which mostly agree that it's actually a good game. Plus it just looks so cool. Can't wait to play it, and I'll edit this comment with my review once I finish it.
This is why knowing a critic's tastes is so important. I loved borderlands 2 and shadow warrior 2, and Gmanlives hated them. This is by the same people that made Shadow Warrior 2, and if he hates this game too, I now know that I will probably like it.
For some reason this reminded me of when Alyx mentions Gordon doesn’t talk much. Until she says it, I actually forgot he doesn’t talk. I was engrossed.
Man idk the gameplay looks great and it seems like everything it was advertised as. The outdated critique just doesn't make much sense to me because it seems to intentionally lean into the 360 era of games where it's just a linear action game with a dozen or so levels to tear through and feel like a badass. Seems like a well executed B-movie, sure it's not gonna win awards, but damn it looks fun.
Wasn't the Order 1886 something similar? Steampunk team of agents battle against supernatural beings...but it turned out you mostly just fight other humans for "factions rebels evil human terrorist blagh" and stuff? The hype, the payoff wasn't worth it, now we got the same thing happening here.
Damn, it is a dated game... Which means no microtransactions, marketplace and such bs? This is a good thing! Mindless fun! Yay! Especially the theme is something to be noticed. Wont get that from a "modern" title I would assume : D
Everything tracked except the coop mode criticism. That is all ANY coop gamer wants, just let me play with my fuckin friends, i dont care about the details. Give me a 2nd spawn point for my friend, and anything above that is just icing on the cake.
Paranormal Wild West is a genre we need to see more of. There just isn't enough six shooting, lever action rifle slinging horror and paranormal properties out there

I forgot where I heard this before but this game just isn’t afraid to be a video game. Too many games are trying so hard to be hyper realistic but I don’t play games to be hand held through a story that could have been told through a movie. I want my games to get batsh*t crazy sometimes. I don’t think that makes this dated, that makes it not afraid to go nuts
Indeed. It is a game yet tells a story. Nothing fancy, it can be cheesy, but it's a game to have fun with. It's not trying to be a cinematic marvel or rival AAAs. I'd say Gungrave GORE is a lesser version of this, but that too is most definitely a throwback. It plays almost like the PS2 game lol
Eh, I wasn't expecting some groundbreaking award winning game. From all the gameplay I've seen it just looks like a throwback to old school third person action games from the Xbox 360 era which is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Seriously, it's as if someone combined Van Helsing with the Wild West and this is the result. I'm in.
I agree...this reviewer seems way off and it seems like a lot of the reviews I've seen have been giving it solid reviews saying that gameplay is really fun and diverse...like the complete opposite of what this dude says... definitely getting it and playing it for myself....

Absolutely loved this game. So much fun, not even remotely overcomplicated. Yeah, it's very much story light, or just not deep at all, but it was enough to keep it interesting, along with the gameplay. Evil West brings me back to a time where games were just fun. They didn't have to innovate, restructure and revolutionize, they just had to be fun is all. Loves your video, always love your videos and, more often than not, I am on the same page as you, but not here. Maybe it will be one of those you revisit down the road.
Sometimes I just want a gane that throws u n2 the action. I been playing the PS3 joints lately. WET, Shadows of The Damned, Stranglehold,TimeShift, Prototype 2,Singularity, Dead To Rights Retribution etc
This plays exactly like I would expect a late PS2/early PS3 title to play and it's glorious. I'd take more games like this over 95% of the dreck produced today any day of the week
The problem is it plays like those games but doesn't add anything new. If I wanted to play old game if play old games. The biggest problem with this game is that it's 5 hours extra long. If they cut the game in half it'd be actually bearable to play but after like 2 missions all the combat sequences are the same to the end of the game
"bloat" is an overused critical term, and accusing a 10 hour game like Evil West of it seems a bit absurd. the only game that i would say is legitimately bloated is AC Odyssey - i typically find most other games accused of bloat (Witcher 3, Mafia 3, Alien Isolation, Mad Max, etc) to be fine as long as i play them intermittently. one has to wonder if reviewers complain about bloat not because a game is actually too long, but rather because they play the whole thing in a handful of very long sessions to meet arbitrary embargo deadlines.
i think bloat is referring to the lack of gameplay lol, bunch of handheld cliff walking & long, frequent cut scenes. Not too difficult to see how someone would say adding those things to an already small game is adding bloat.
I watched your review and I watched Skill Up's. The weirdest thing is that I want to buy it because of your review because the way you mentioned the problems and the experience you had in the game were clear, concise and with no frills added. This game is great fun, I found mechanics such as the cooldowns really encouraged you to strategize and mix-up tactics, plus you could use perks and skills to improve the parts of your kit you favored. Your comments on the story felt a bit off base. It may be light and loaded with one-liners, but it's not confusing or weighed down in politics, everything moves at a brisk pace... I've played through a considerable amount of the game (haven't beat it yet) but every single level in this game looks completely unique. It's actually quite a lot like DMC, but mixed with GOW and Doom. There's no weapon wheel. Everything is designed to absolutely wombo combo a vampire.
