I stumbled across this finals match 10 years and it made me fall deeply in love with fighting games. A decade later, my passion is stronger than ever and I'm even more excited to play, learn, and watch different fighting games!
This moment lives rent free in my head. It occassionally comes to my mind when i think of stuff sometimes. Also helps that i watched this live and saw the comeback happening in front of my eyes
Jon K Evo moment 37 was hype but I believe Daigo still lost. KoF Grand finals evo 2k12 and 2k13 were hype. As far as Grand Finals went, this was one of the most hype in the history of Evo. If you understood BB you'd obviously have a greater appreciation but even the people in the dark about the game still went ape shit for the entire top 32. Eight Kokonoe players in top 16 and when top 8 came....ALL OF THEM GOT KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT!!!! A Tager made top 8 over a Kokonoe...that shit is GODLIKE!!!!
It's even better if you watch the whole top 8 too... I saw this live at a shit dead end job, and all the people in the kitchen there were all gathered around my phone to watch it... I was the only person who knew what the fuck was going on, but everyone was hype. Only criticism is the white kid is super dramatic and cringey sometimes haha what I wouldn't have James Chen and Seth Killian commenting the whole top 8, that would make this so much more hot. But yeah... I agree... This is the best finals
Where else can you hear this kind of commentary - 27:30 - "Will this kill I don't think so?" 27:35 - "Is it possible? Is this enough to kill?" 27:37 - *Scream* "ITS GONNA KILL! ITS GONNA KILL!" Lol love it, I know nothing about this game but I really enjoyed the finals and the over the top commentary. Grats to the winner!
22:50 You can tell he was hungry for an astral finish and was playing with his food when he had the lead. When the set is over you can see how devastated he is for throwing that away.
I get the impression a lot of people haven't seen the entire Top 8. When the final match between these two started Garireo had been playing for over an hour and had not left the stage at any point. He had a long set with Dogura and lost. Then he had a long set against Dora that he nearly lost. He won that game by the skin of his teeth and then went directly into this match against a player that had soundly beaten him just a half hour before. That's why you see Dogura playing with his food so much here. He was fishing for an astral to end the tournament on. He was well known for doing this in the past. If he didn't have this bad habit he would have probably won this tournament. Not to take anything away from Garireo but a lot of this match came down to Dogura not respecting the other player in key moments. He was too focused on winning Evo with an astral. He wanted his win at Evo to be hype. In his mind he'd already won and this set was just a formality. If you don't believe me just observe what he does on game points. He's not playing like someone looking to put a game away with any hit. He's busy making sure his gagues are filled and he's set-up to do the astral. He passes up on a lot of chances to do easy damage because he's worried he'll kill Garireo before he can do the astral. Garireo's play is really impressive throughout this marathon in Top 8. He constantly adapts and does things that shouldn't work but do. He eats damage and loses a lot of rounds trying different things. He finds ways to lay hits on the opponent where others had failed all day. He doesn't get fatigued or bothered by the crowd. This allows him to win match ups he really shouldn't. Frankly, he went against two monsters and no one expected him to beat either of them. Everyone expected a Dogura vs Dora grand finals. That's why this top 8 is so great. A guy that wasn't supposed to win playing with a character that wasn't supposed to make top 8 manages to run through the strongest this game has to offer. It's a shame they don't have it at Evo anymore and it was replaced by a tag team game that doesn't play anything like this one.
The only part I disagree with is the use of the word 'shouldn't'. That Garireo 'shouldn't' have won, that he wasn't supposed to. What makes a player good, or 'deserving' of a win? What makes a win 'unjustified'? Is someone sick on the day? Does someone underestimate their opponent, or make the 'better' read where the opponent does a move that 'shouldn't' work? I'm not trying to throw shade at Noname specifically here, but it's a really dangerous mindset to bring to any competitive format: a win is a win. If one player wins because they took better care of their health, then that wasn't a win they didn't 'earn' because it didn't come from understanding the matchup or character skill for instance. If someone loses because the long grueling day of matches wore them out, the opponent didn't 'steal' that win. The very thing that separates professional play from casual (or to be more accurate, 'amateur' play) in most sports is the very FACT that all that matters is the win. It's very easy to say that on the aggrogate one team is better than another because of how they represent themselves generally in any sport, but if they get knocked out of a tournament that is IT for them regardless of your opinion of them. The only objective value a tournament has to competition is to put EVERYTHING on the line match by match. If people sit there and make excuses for the players they watch or themselves, then it devalues the whole process for everyone. I understand this original comment was praising Garireo for perservering against incredible odds and beating players who were essentially holding back out of pride, but using phrases like, "A guy that wasn't supposed to win playing with a character that wasn't supposed to make top 8" acts as if the second he picked that character or drew those opponents his fate should have been decided, when in actual fact he proves this is wishful thinking of those who want to believe the simplicity of 'composite skill = results'. The 'best player' of a game doesn't win tournaments because he's 'the best' in some vague sense. The person who is able to win tournaments proves he is the best player. It's that simple.
I had to come back to this after so long It's helped get me into fighting games and today it has helped reaffirm me in a moment of weakness A lot has changed in my life over the years, but I hope my love for the community and moments like these never fades away
We've had titans clash, We've seen evo moment 37. But this, this set right here, This is the true heart of fighting games burning at it's goddamn brightest. Thank you for never giving up Galileo, you fucking earned this.
Literally stumbled onto Garireo vs Dora that morning live on twitch. Watched until the end of the tournament. I'd never watched any fighting game footage before this, not even Evo Moment 37. I've never been as hype in my life since.
The algorithm has blessed us with a gem. If you know someone who doesn't understand why fighting games are so hype, show them this match. It'll make them a believer.
27:59 If you look closely, Garireo actually drops the combo so the reset into super deals maximum damage, instead of doing minimum which likely wouldn't have killed. Had Dogura barrier blocked or Garireo simply the entire combo, this match could've had a very different conclusion...
Wooowww !!! que emocionante final. Garireo tiene un control increíble de la presión. Tuvo que realizar el reset, sacarse un match point championship...uffff. Jugador completísimo. Muy buena defensa y ataque en su juego.
oh okay, It's always interesting to see what BB characters the former GG players use. Roboky's a really high damaging character, maybe thats why he uses Azrael?
Best tournament final I've ever seen And galileo really deserve that prize, he's been broken all over and still able to win it *but pliz nerf lychee :v *
was there not an Evo grand final with Azrael winning against a Litchi player?? AM I TRIPPING?? I remember it plain as day and cannot find the VOD and it was sooo fuckin hype
