EVO Versus TWINCAM... My REVIEW / Seat Upgrade / Future Of This Channel

After much wrenching on this new-to-me motorcycle, roadtriping, and just daily riding, I figured I'd give my thoughts on this bike (1994 FLSTN) in comparison to my most previous bike (2012 FLSTC). Also, changed out seats again. I also wanted to explain the reason for the post I made in my community and my intention for this channel.

I came because you swapped your Twinkie for an EVO. I used to ride a Shovel after years not riding I just got a 2004 Heritage hot rod with a phase 3 kit in it. I stayed because I respect your handle, you're a good man and a fine brother keep the Shiny Side Up.

What caught my attention when I found your channel and subscribed a couple of months ago is your down to earth home and bikes. I feel bad that I don't have a spotless garage for the 99 Softail and 02 Road King like what I thought everyone else has. Your home and garage looks so welcoming with treasures around the outside. You had the courage to be exactly who you are, treasures and all and make uplifting, wholesome, great quality videos for normal people to enjoy. No fancy garage, no fancy show bikes, just nothing but ordinary people, ordinary stuff and a deep love for old bikes with a desire to share it all with friends. So glad you started this channel. God Bless.

sold my shovel years ago and bought a new Evo in '91 and never looked back. I also have a twin cam Heritage and it's a great bike but if I'm headin out to ride without my OL it's the Evo. I was wrenchin at a indy shop for 2 years till it closed and I worked on a lot of shovels not only are the newest ones 35 yrs old and need a lot of money thrown at them. Like Paul B sez the Evo is all the fixes the shovel needed.

Every EVO owner says this! Everybody can't be wrong. I wonder why H-D dropped this engine on the Big Twin. At least the Evo is still on the Sportster. I wouldn't have a Sportster if it didn't. Long live the EVO!
@pebear
@pebear 4 года назад
@@boomerguy9935 The sportster frame is only so big and if they created a Twin Cam Sportster or a Milwaukee 8 Sportster They would have to change up the frame. People like the sporty the way it is. Also the Sporty engine is much different than the Big Twins because it's Unit Construction. The Unit Construction also limits how big the jugs get before they have to change up the frame Geometry.

@@pebear Good to know! I'm glad the Sportster can't be changed. With the loyal following of the EVO 80/1340 Big Twins, it seems the only way you can get a "new" one is to buy the S&S motor.

In the early 2000s, we bought a brand new Harley Davidson Twin Cam Fatboy. The Wife & I loved that bike. Back then our payments were $350 a month. a short time after we bought the FatBoy I got laid off from my job. We decided we had to get out from under those HD payments, so we sold the Fatboy. As a experienced Machinist, I soon found a new job and we saved our dollars and pennies until we had enough to by a used Harley Davidson FatBoy with cash. We were lucky to find a Bad Ass Fatboy owned by a Los Angles Police Officer who was asking $10,000 for a Custom 1992 Fatboy, with Harley Davidson Factory 57' Chevy Blue & Cream paint, Fat Bob tanks, PM wheels & Disk brakes and a stock Evo 80ci motor and cobra long shots pipes. After a little negotiation and whipping out an $8,000 stack of one hundred bills, the Bike was ours! 20 years later and attending the Sturgis Bike Rally for 17 years, we are still riding our 1992 FatBoy and still loving that Evo.

Everyone and his/her Dog love a Big Twin Evo Blockhead! Power? I've never owned a Harley, (too late now), but my little Harley '82 FXWG look-alike twin, air-cooled, CV carburetted; (no fancy electronics), '96 Honda CMX 250C Rebel (1984-2016) suits my image and me just fine, safely pottering around the countryside at 45-55 MPH. I agree with your position on the Evo sir. I recently sold my 2018 Heritage 114 leaving me witb a 2007 Ultra Classic twin cam. Then on the showroom floor at my Harley dealer sat a 1996 Dyna Super Glide Convertible, black - one owner, 9,833 miles, beautiful paint and ALL original! I put $800 down and purchased the Dyna for $5,700 out the door. There IS a difference between the the twin cam Ultra and the Evo Dyna. Yes there's a weight difference but after I ride the Ultra based on the differences you noted with the twin cam ENGINE and how it functions I'm hurting. I'm' a disabled veteran and a person that meditates so when my body has a sudden change with pain I'll meditate on it and the first question I ask is WHAT'S different, what changed? Riding the twin cam has a totally different affect on my body. Riding the twin cam as you stated creates this 'aggressive' demeanor which requires the rider to increase physical control. Being more PHYSICAL on a motorcycle, for me has an affect on my injured, battered, wounded body. This is a truth and not just a fleeting thought. Meditation......... and the gift of discernment are key in my life. Well thought out assessments like yours are very helpful. Thank you sir for a straight up evaluation. Grandfather John Livin the Dream. ps: I'll put the low mile Ultra up for sale, no regrets.

Bigbore kit, Ported heads, 107 base line for better throttle response, cams, blah blah blah. Power power power, and then I realized, my goal was fuel economy and warranty, and longevity of the bike. Power wasn't what I really wanted, I too was letting that ego part of me get to my head, and I don't even have the bike yet. That power is tempting, but what's it really gonna do when the national speed limit is 75 and people do 80ish on the highway? Not much. Ill take the 45mpg, with the stage1 for a bit more sound, and take the long distance trips. No need to rush it. So I get where you're coming from. You keep on doing you, life sometimes is nicer when you take it is, and do what's comfortable.

Hey SaddleTramp...just discovered your channel. I thought I was the only one motovlogging on an Evo haha! Love my '88 Evo - they have a certain soul and sound different than all others. I'm amazed and inspired that you have such a successful channel in such a short time. I also started motovlogging in 2017. I'll check out some of your other vids.

I'd like your thoughts on gasoline, I have a 98 fxstc here in England, a 2004 deuce and an 07 fxstc. However, all our petrol now has 5% ethanol. It's got E5 on the fuel pumps at the stations. Soon they want the E10 here too. 10%ethanol. What about using a little fuel additive such as amsoil or redline etc due to the ethanol especially with the water separation possibilities and the lack of lubrication from the ethanol. Thanks

Never let yputube change who ya are. I got into making videos on guns and gun review out of boredom cause my ex wife never wanted to leave the house. I switched it up to bikes cause motorcycles are my true passion in life. My channel gets way less views now and I no longer edit or even use a pc to upload. I make live riding vids from my phone now. New woman new life and now im a step dad. I no longer care about views and subs cause I am living a good life now. Do what is in your heart man and dont stop. I came into some $$$ recently and I want to buy a bigger bike. I bought my sporty cause it was light and had enough power. After my bike wreck I couldnt hold up a big bike anymore. 1.5 years later im stronger and can do it. I want to buy harley again. I got 7 hrand to spend. Found lots of twin cam and real clean 90s evo bikes in that range. Im thinkin evo honestly. Id rather buy a bike from a 70 uear old man who treated it like his baby and owned it since new. As far as less power, if I wanted to go fast I'd buy a metric rocket. My question to you is what do you prefer and how much different is the power between a tc88 and an 80evo? Ive ridden both but no more than a few miles on my buddies bikes so its hard to decide. I figure you rode em both enough to give an honest oppinion.

I agree...the modern super-big displacement and power bikes do not tie in with the people who are the intended buyers....ie older guys who just want to cruise. Harley need to go back to 1340 being the basic bike that you can ride and have some fun and de-stress and can tour on.....

I've always wanted a 90's Softail with the Evolution engine. I haven't gotten the Softail but I've been fortunate to have ridden one and I loved how smoothly it rode. It was like flying down the highway on a cloud to me compared to my Japanese "cruiser" which is more of a do it all machine, high performance, solid braking, viable cruiser, suitable for 2 up riding and fairly comfortable. That's the '82 Yamaha XJ1100J Maxim. Well, I finally had the $ and the opportunity to buy a Harley-Davidson and my first ever V-Twin at the same time and the seller was less than a mile away from home and the bike is a super clean well cared for '94 Dyna Wide Glide. It has much of the look I was going for in wanting a softail and someday I will still work towards getting an Evo Softail. The Evolution big twin and the Sportsters are the only HD engines I ever want to bother with and with some tooling on it it will be all the performance I want or need from a cruiser. For now I expect it is a stock machine orher than the Arlen Ness air cleaner. If I want a speedier V-Twin for now I just picked up another bike I've wanted for decades for the look and it came from the factory with a good 30+ horsepower more than the Evo 80 from a Honda Shadow VT1100C. I'm diving headlong back into motorcycles amd riding and actually getting my adult sons into fixing bikes and learning to ride on the old '73 Yamaha Enduros I've had kicking around for decades. Now once they're up to stepping up to a bigger street bike I have 4 of them that are completely capable of long distance rides and we're decided on making the 700+ mile ride to Sturgis soon. Probably next year so we can ride with the CVMA chapter I'm looking to patch into as a full member.

SaddleTramp, you are absolutely right about enjoying the ride and not feeling like you have to blister the tarmac every time you ride. I am in love with my 1999 FLSTC! If I want speed, I will hop on my R6. I don't really understand dumping $10k to soup up a Harley, just to get smoked by a 600cc rocket. If you want fast, buy a 2nd bike that is just that and keep your old Evo and ENJOY THE RIDE! Listen to your inner voice & God bless 🙌🏽
