Very underated channel in my opinion. Thank you for your continuous contributions to "open source" education. Also, I'm impressed at your willingness to spill about having to take a bit to look at the saw because of the mitre issue. Keep on keeping on!

Just a tip for these metal cutting chop saws: Try and avoid cutting flats in a horizontal orientation if you can avoid it because it puts extra wear on the blade ($$$$). The less meat the tooth has to travel through the better. For example cut the angle iron with the corner pointing straight up, and cut the flat plate with it's side vertical rather than flat on the saw base. It'll cut much quicker. For really thick stuff like that rail road tie I would still try to use your band saw.

I've also seen where they use that attachment to hold square tube in a diamond position so the blade never has to go thru 2 flat sections.

@@Robon2ndShift You could also use a piece of angle to tip the large flat bar up on a 45, vs having it flat.
@johnpyle8027
@johnpyle8027 4 года назад
Even the angle iron should be turned over so it never cuts a flat. Thats what the piece that slides over the clamp is for. I just got one of these and it is incredible. I have been cutting 2x2x3/16 and the Evolution saw cuts it with less pressure than my Milwaukee Chop Saw with a new blade to cut a 2x4 piece of wood. Liked it so much I bought the circular saw too and cut 3/16 plate. Wear long sleeves, a good face shield, gloves and a hat. Throws the chips even with the shop vac hooked to it but precise, smooth and fast.

Thank you for the review!!!! We have had this saw for several years in our shop and gone thru many blades. It has cut unbelievable amounts of steel. We also have the EVOSAW230, and have gone thru 2 saws. We had a problem with a new 230 saw, (maybe it got dropped...don't know what happened) and Evolution took care of the problem under warranty, great customer service! Yes the chips can be annoying, but the cuts are way better than what we call the "sparky" type chop saw. The saw cuts faster than sparky. Actually surprised our saw has lasted this long, as it goes thru severe use. We do need to upgrade the 380 saw as ours has cut so much steel it is starting to cut a bit off square. Your review is spot on, and thanks again!!!

The biggest negative of cold-cut saws for me personally is that my dog is pretty much always with me in the shop and even with the best chip collection system in the world they still tend to be messy and throw razor sharp shards of metal all over the place. I wouldn't want to be walking around on them barefoot and I doubt my dog does either. ....That's probably not a concern for most folks though :) --- Good quality blades are expensive for these so I'm not sure how the cost per cut stacks up against an abrasive chop saw, bandsaw or reciprocating saw. For speed and the ability to get a clean and precise cuts they can't be beat though.

I have an AGP version of the your saw. I haven't tried railway line, so thanks for that. My first experience with the technology was in about 2001 a Makita . With the workers I had in the shop, I couldn't keep blades up to it. I forgot about the whole idea until last year when I decided to give one a try, no regrets. I don't know how practical this is bit I'm interested in what you can safely and economically cut with it. I have kept my abrasive saw for stuff I think may damage the blade. I also have a large horizontal / vertical bandsaw for big stuff.

I guess you just got lucky? Since I spotted a conversion videu in my home feed from abrasive to toothed blade. After watching that I saw your video. having watched it I looked at suggestions beneath and it looks like every chook and his dog have posted on the Evolution saw topic. I got luck in this too since the railway iron cut, being so interesting answered some major concerns I had developed. I've got a blade on the way for my cold cut saw and big round bar I have to section. It may be just fine after all for this saw to tackle? I have a dual V belt drive here, so a change of pulley and swapped to a 4 pole motor fixes the speed issue. I do not want to see sparks!

I have one of these saws for over 2 years. On my second blade now. First one I would say lasted about as long as maybe 12-15 abrasive discs. Some stuff I did didn't help. I now put all angle in the saw with the point up. All square section goes in with a corner pointing up and down. Also cut some high tensile bar not knowing it was bad. On second blade I've looked after it better looking like it will certainly last as long as 20 good quality abrasives. It's a fantastic saw and a great addition to any workshop.

Thanks for your post. I would like to ask about your Evolution cut-off saw. Have you tried cutting thick square tube with it? Does the blade last on say, 1/8" thick steel tube? I have wasted a bunch of money on blades, trying to find a good solution for cutting, accurately and quickly. I bought an Evolution 10" carbide blade for one of my regular miter saws (5200 rpm blade). It dry cut the 1/8" thick 2" x 3" tube fine for 3 cuts and then was dull. That was a waste of around $80!! I went to Lowe's and bought the only 10" steel cutting blade they carried (DeWalt) and it lasted 3 cuts (even trying to use a spray lube. A waste of another $70!!! I had an old, (not dull) steel cutting blade and it only lasted three cuts on 3" x 3" 1/8" wall tubing. I was just wondering how the slower cold cut Evolution saw does on thick tubing. Thank you. DW
@MakingStuff
@MakingStuff 2 года назад
I'm still using the same blade that came with the saw. Even after cutting all the stuff in the video and the RR track, it still cuts 1/8" mild steel tube like it was new. You aren't trying to cut hardened steel are you?
@donwittbrodt-donsprojects7507
@donwittbrodt-donsprojects7507 2 года назад
@@MakingStuff I don't think it's hardened steel. I can cut it just fine on my Harbor Freight horizontal bandsaw. The tubes I have problem with are 1/8" thick, 3" x 3" welded steel square tubing. They cut great the first 3 cuts (I even wiped the tubes down with lacquer thinner). But the 4th was impossible. The blade just sits on top of the flat side of the tubing and will not cut, anymore. Some people have suggested cutting them on diagonal but that is almost impossible with a 10" blade and I would have to make a custom clamp setup (which I can do, but it's kinda stupid...). My small Kobalt sliding miter (7 1/4"), seems to do OK with 1/16" thick 1-1/2" square tubing but I actually used a spray lube. I had so much trouble with the bigger tubing, I didn't want to ruin another blade. I'm guessing the slower cutting saws are the only answer...

If you can avoid it, then never cut angle iron like that. If vibration or just a bad clamping makes it flip you are in all sorts of trouble. On a bandsaw you risk ruining the blade, on a cut off saw like this things might go flying. Find some wood that is larger than the leg of the angle iron and clamp on that. More secure clamping and less vibrations, which translates to less wear on the blade and more safe cutting. The wood (or whatever) is also good for turning the angle iron and allow for 45 degree cuts in more than one direction.

You cut that railtie two or three more times and your blade would be toast. All those sparks are the higher carbon in the steel. And your pipe rotated at the end of your cut. If that happened while you were cutting at an angle you would have lost about three teeth on that blade.
