Fun Fact: When DKC (which was developed outside Japan) released in Japan, a lot of Japanese players didn't understand his self-deprecating humor, since that's kind of a western thing (particularly the US, UK, and Ireland).

It’s funny how they named Cranky kong ‘Donkey Kong’ back then, but they make donkey kong a separate character (DKJr) while cranky kong is confirmed to be the ‘donkey kong’ in the arcades.... The more you think about this, the more you get confused...

My interpretation of the time line. This DK is now Cranky Kong. Mario and Pauline were very young during the events of the arcade game (presumably early 20s). Cranky Kong was at a mid point of his life during the events of the arcade game probably in his late 50s or early 60s. Yes I know he’s a gorilla. Donkey Kong JR is the father of the current DK. The current DK is Donkey Kong the third. Donkey Kong JR is missing or is presumably dead.

What has me the most curious is how did Mario end up forgiving Donkey Kong I (who is now Cranky Kong) for kidnapping Pauline and how did Donkey Kong II (who is the modern Donkey Kong we know and love today) forgive Mario for kidnapping his father? I mean, you would think that Mario and the Kong family/clan would have constant beef and be mortal enemies for a good while, but no. Soon later, they are friends now as implied in games where Mario and DK (and sometimes even his friends Diddy, Dixie, etc.) show up together such as Mario Party, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., etc. Heck, even in some mainline games it is implied that they are in good terms now. The only time they ever gotten back to their deadly rivalry was in the Mario vs Donkey Kong series, but even then at the end of some of those games, they forgive each other and made up for the trouble they gave each other. As glad as I am that Donkey Kong has now become a more friendlier face in the Mario universe, I do wonder why they retconned, or not retconned, more like rewrote the rivalry between Mario and Donkey Kong. I guess the Mario universe wasn't big enough for two or more rivals for Mario since Bowser has taken the spot now, and they decided to now make Mario and Donkey Kong friends. Same thing happened with Wario. It started off as mortal enemies, now Mario and Wario don't really have as much beef as they had at first, if not at all. This is something that has been keeping me up for some nights now. I need to know now. What lead to this deadly rivalry between Mario and DK to suddenly become a friendship? What would Cranky (DK I) think of his son being friends with the man who kidnapped him and maybe even tried to kill him? What would Mario think of DK II being the son of the animal who kidnapped his first love interest? SO MANY QUESTIONS!!!!!!! This couldn't have just happened out of the blue! Surely something must have happened behind the scenes where Mario and DK had some sort of peace treaty or a truce at the very least. I don't know, and I want to know as soon as possible.

The theory states that Cranky is the DK in the original Donkey Kong game. He would then have a kid named DK jr. Then DK jr would have a son as well also named Donkey Kong and DK jr would go on to become the new Cranky. This continues on for Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong 64 and finally Donkey Kong Country Returns
