Evolution of... The Flying Act (Net act)
Human dreams taking flight, borne by the hopes of a new millennium. The pendulum movement of the trapeze flyers emphasizes that time continues but never stops passing. The benefits outweigh the risks, for the adventure is the reward.
In its 25 years of Mystere, it has had 3 different flying acts:
Flying Trapeze (Dec.25.1993 - Dec.1995) [Caravena - Birimbau]
Before the High Bar apparatus was conceived for Cirque du Soleil's 1994 creation Alegría, Mystère featured a Flying Trapeze number very similar to one presented in 1990's Nouvelle Expérience. With flashy, colourful costumes and an unwavering spirit to fly, these birds of prey took to the skies in a phenomenal act, which, unfortunately, is no longer presented. At the end of the 1995 season, this number was replaced with the High Bar. But notice that this version of High Bar is actually a dual High Bar, which makes this presentation vastly different than the one seen in Alegría.
High Bar (Dec.1995 - Jan.13.2012) [High Bar - Strike of the net]
The act features gymnasts flying and catching each other with extreme precision; the music matches the intricate moves with an assortment of crescendos, diminuendos, and staccatos. The climax of the song builds as the vocalists' pitch rises with ringing, metallic synthesizer patches providing an offbeat backdrop. Then it ends with a thunderous crash. And one of Mystère's trademarks is about to begin.
Flying trapeze (Feb.09.2012 - Present) [Fiesta (from ZED) - Strike of the net]
The Flying Trapeze artists featured here were first seen in Cirque du Soleil's ZED, its first resident show in Tokyo, Japan. There they performed with high accolades until ZED ceased operations and closed on December 31, 2011. A few short weeks later, a small re-vamp of Mystère was announced, which would incorporate ZED's Aerial Silks and Flying Trapeze acts. Flying Trapeze replaced Mystère's long-standing Aerial High Bar, which performed in the show from 1996 until February 2012.
