I really love the way that the armor is designed for them in _Dark Souls_ with the hip plates leading down to the tail axe blade, and even the eye shield. It's just a cool look for creatures designed as animate statues that defend a castle using halberds and shields.
I personally love how the gargoyles in DS1 don't look like a statue that comes to life(definition of a gargoyle) but rather a creature/animal/beast that can sit in a guard position for long periods of time that anor londo just decided to put Armor on.
@@tommylepersonne9913 ds1 gargoyles design is awesome and very unique. They are far from your "classic" gargoyle. Ds2 gargoyles follow the most classic gargoyle theme.
I absolutely love the design of the Elden Ring ones. Such a badass silloutte (especially with their hair sticking out) and that they're made from corpse wax instead of stone. Plus they got some sick sword spinning martial arts moves lmao.
@@forlorn9134 That's my main complaint with ER. The main bosses were fantastic, but gank fights were such a regression from ds3. After we got the masterpiece that was demon prince, I was hoping they'd give us at least 1 good gank in ER, but sadly not.
Demon souls: high Gothic gargoyle Darks souls: its a fucking dragon DS2: the great stone dragon from mulan. DS3: spooky skeleton ER: it's a fucking corpse.
The Elden Ring gargoyles are the most intimidating to me, because they look so wiry and agile. Black Blade Kindred was horrifying first play through. They make an interesting contrast to the more bulky gargoyles of earlier games.
Elden Ring has a recurring theme of multiple identities. Margit - Morgot, Renna - Ranni, Marika - Radagon and even some NPC's like hayetta or shabriri. I knew the gargoyles had 2 faces prior to this video, but I just realised how gargoyles always come with two sets of weapons and change fighting styles frequently during battle. This seems to have a lot of tie in with the dual personality theme, perhaps the two faces each take their turn fighting? Just a thought.
Gargoyles dint just have 2 personalities in ER, they're made from the corpses of great heroes mashed together. Thats why they're so skilled with their weapons.
Now that i think about it... yeah, they were the only ones i was always kinda afraid to fight. In other DS' they weren't that scary, and in ER they were bosses or mini-bosses, and i never avoid fighting those.
I'll still fight DS3 gargoyles before fighting those horrible winged knights, especially the ascended version. those 3 ones that drop down on the roof before the Twin Princes are a nightmare and I still haven't killed all 3 for the slab that drops. Now, Elden Ring gargoyles can absolutely piss off. I haven't touched Elden Ring in a couple of months or so now, but I tried the Valiant Gargoyle fight a bunch and consistently got wrecked. I can't tell if I'm way underleveled for them or if me going pure melee is making the game several times more difficult than it needs to be, or a combination of the 2.
That Gargoyle that blocks your way to the bonfire right at the beginning of Profaned Capital always felt like a d*ck move. Especially on that narrow, crumbling stone bridge where you can't easily run past it. All that after you've just endured Irithyll Dungeon. I suck it up and fight that one at the very least. They're weak to strike damage, so that knowledge might be helpful. And the spear ones have attacks that you can bait.
so cool!! love to see them in detail. i think demon's souls' maneaters could have qualified too, as they're kinda the very first of the double-gargs boss fight tradition and have the same mechanics.
I thought about it as well, but it wouldnt fit the nature of the video, since maneaters are more akin to chimeras having a lions head, batlike wings, a humanoid body and a snake for a tail.
They all look cool, except the DS2 one, that one has the apperance of something you expect to see on plyastation 1, blame the conditions the developers had to endure to end like that, i wonder how would look if they have more time to make the game.
@Puppet the thing is, they look outdated, uglier than the others, and overall all ds2 looks worse than ds1 so. Ds2 gargoyles also have meshes bad rigged. For the psx games, did i sound like that? Maybe was an insult compare those gargoyles to a ps1 game sorry, i played a lot of ps1, and kind of reminds me of that old graphics. But worse.
The Bloodborne gargoyles were very different, but i remember screaming when I saw the first one moving ! Definitely thought it was part of the decor. Don't know why they weren't featured in this vid
Bruh, this is literally a Darwin's evolution of Gargoyles They're getting bigger and standing more upright. Almost feels like they're humanizing. Even their faces are becoming more and more humanoid in appearance. Not to mention becoming stronger, intelligent & more versatile than their predecessor.
Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 veered into more traditional- if exaggerated -gargoyle designs, while Demon's Souls, Dark Souls III and Elden Ring all brought back that tortured, uncanny sort of design that hints at these creatures being more than mere constructs of stone or some kind of mythical monster.
There's something about DS1 gargoyles that made them look more like armored dragons than moving statues. I like it as it is, but as a gargoyle example it's my least favourite.
Dark souls has the best gargoyle designs. Elden ring gargoyles are ugly AF but they have the best move set out of all of them (except for the sitting ones, theres nothing good about them).
Bruh now I feel dumb cause every time I fought a gargoyle in elden ring I never really payed attention to their faces. I would always just think they had bird like faces or some 😭
DS1 Gargoyles are the coolest looking imo, but DS2 ones really do look like statues. And then From started making them more and more human shaped. Haha ER ones have that pickelhaube like hat. In the seconds before they kill me I always think it looks goofy
Demon´s Souls: possibly once tortured human turned demon Dark Souls: what seems to be an organic creature with matching armor and weaponry Dark Souls II: nicely carved Sculptures that came to life Dark Souls III and Elden Ring: ewwww I would not be surprised if the Dark Souls III Gargoyle was an actual corpse fused with some stone work they really get grosser with each passing installment, though the Demon´s Souls one also had a spooky vibe to it
Personally the ER version is my least favorite of them all, they were just way too big for the current camera system to fight against, especially with such hectic kinda moveset.
Love the lore and design of ER gargoyles. Being made from corpses was scary and sad. Fighting them, however, specifically the twins, wasn't all that fun.
Ds1 is the best the closest compromise to looking imposing while still looking like a gargoyle. Elden ring looks like a zombie with wings / ds3 is just a skeleton with wings I love ds2 as a game and it does look like. A gargoyle but lost the scary factor. But ds1 looks like a armored gargoyle and has the best look in my opinion.
Bloodborne does have 'Lost Children of Antiquity' which behave and do look like Gargoyles in the Castle Cainhurst area. Maybe they weren't included as they are very different enemies compared to these (no weapons, smaller, more vampiric rather than beastly appareance).
Haven't fought the Bell Gargoyles in DS1 yet and haven't gotten far enough in DS2 to see any at all. I don't mind the DS3 gargoyles except for them putting 2 in that cramped area on the way to Yhorm's fight. I gave up fighting those more because of the smaller enemies spewing fire and making things even more difficult. The only gargoyles I've really fought in Elden Ring so far are the Valiant Gargoyle pair in Nokron. I still haven't beaten them and I hate that fight. I feel like they took the Bell Gargoyle fight and ramped it way up while throwing in some stuff from DS3 gargoyles. I'd much rather fight ones spewing fire over ones spewing poison any day. Doesn't help that I'm being stubborn and insisting on completing Elden Ring with a melee build. I use FP for items, spirit summoning, and weapon arts, and that's it. I know I could handle the Valiant Gargoyle fight better with magic, but at this point it's a matter of principle in not caving to using magic for everything.
Ds1 has the best version imo they have reptile features but still look lkke soldiers and they aren't overly massive like ER where you can only see their feet
i think the demon souls gargoyle uses the same sound as the sand worms from Star wars jedi knight jedi academy cept its speed up. I think they all look great but i cannot stand elden ring's versions of them, so annoying even worse than ds2's gank fight.
Elden Ring Gargoyles look too human imo, which is a shame because I love their general aesthetic. If they were just a little more draconic or whatever classic Gargoyles are supposed to be, I would've liked them more
@@haryjackazzgaming1813 I know they're made out of warriors who gave permission to use their corpses once they die, It's a shame they don't look more like traditional gargoyles
Dark Souls II truly found a way to make all memorable enemies fucking awful That game should have never existed, its a disgrace for the TRUE Dark Souls games
I’m my opinion I’d rank the gargoyles 1. Belfry gargoyles 2. Dark souls 1 3. Dark souls 3 4. Demon souls 5. Elden Ring I hate the gargoyle designs in ER
i find it funny how little half of these actually look like gargoyles. the DS2 ones are the only ones that actually look like a real garg, the demons souls one is pretty close. the ds1 gargs are superficially similar but its like they started with gargoyles in mind and slowly drifted into something else. the ds3 ones dont really look anything like a gargoyle but are sort of designed to evoke them. theyre much more akin to a dark souls weeping angel tho. the elden ring one looks literally nothing like a gargoyle and isnt even primarily made of stone. its like someone was asked to create a gargoyle but their only knowledge of such a thing was a half remembered picture of one from ds3.
@@cardmossdn8058 have you SEEN how big they are? How wide a reach they are as far as their attacks go? In other gargoyle fights & even the infamous Maneaters, they were your size & didn’t strafe so much. And their attacks were manageable, for the most part. And do NOT even get me started on the duo fight in Nokron. It’s already bad enough they hit really hard on their own, even WITH armour & defensive talismans on you, but it’s worse when you have to fight 2 at once because FromSoft fucking said so, and STILL get killed even with max summons, right levels, max weaponry & excellent dodge timings. I just gave up hope on ever understanding why From made dumbass duo fights like that! In fact, it’s design choices like that & countless others why I just quit FromSoft altogether.
@@AlastorAltruistGaming the duo fights in Elden Ring are ass, yeah, but not all duo fights are. Demon prince, ornstein and smough, and sister friede phase 2 are all examples of balanced, well done duo fights As for 1v1 fights with the Elden Ring gargoyles, they’re perfectly fine. It’s doesn’t matter how big they are or how far their attacks go, they give you fair opportunities to punish them after attacks/combos. You can always see what they’re doing, and always have a viable way to avoid attacks and punish. They are completely fair, well designed enemies
@@cardmossdn8058 the other games? Absolutely! I’m not ever going back to them, but I still agree regardless. I can’t understand why From took several steps backwards in terms of boss design, especially for duo & trio fights. I’ve never had too much troubles with Ornstein & Smough, I finally managed to take down that stupid Lud & Zallen fight (even though THAT was horrible), never had too much problems with Lorian & Lothric, nor the Shadows of Yharnam, Demon Prince or the Ruin Sentinels. The Headless Ape & Wife fight is still questionable & boring. But the duo fights in Elden, as you & I have said, are trash. I mean, it’s like FromSoft stopped caring about making fights balanced; Ik there’s Sleep Pots you can use for the Godskin Duo, but I try to at least fight offensively & fight fair! I just can’t understand how this mixed bag was ever OK for release when it could’ve easily had more time to be fixed, nor will I ever understand how THIS won GOTY despite being boring, uninteresting & broken! I genuinely feel like it takes the best of every other Souls game & doesn’t know what to do with itself!
@@AlastorAltruistGaming nah that’s delusional lmao. Duo fights are ONE SINGLE THING that ER does wrong in the face of everything else that it does masterfully. Quitting the game and the series as a result of that one tiny hiccup is ridiculous. Do what you want though, I guess
Where did they go wrong with the gargoyles in Elden ring? They have absolutely zero weaknesses in the entire game, large and fast and heavily damaging attacks and placed in the worst possible places. I seriously hate these enemies they used to be so fun in the other games just man...what did they do to them Does anyone else think they are just incredibly hard to fight?
What lmao They're perfectly fair 1v1 fights, idk what you're talking about here. They have fair counters to all attacks and have fairly sized punish windows
just stand under their body they literally miss everything while you attack them, just don't panic roll as their attack constantly but it miss as long as you are under them.
