Ever since Super Smash Bros Brawl was released, it added many new features to the game and one of those new features was the ability to swim but only for a short period of time. Eventually your character will drown. This feature has carried to every smash bros game all the way to Smash Bros Ultimate. Some characters like Sonic and Charizard in Smash Bros Ultimate take damage in the water which is a pretty cool Easter Egg.

Yeah! It does make sense that Sonic could run really fast on land, but he can't swim in water. The one thing that Sonic can swim is in Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games series where Sonic wore a life vest in water related Olympic events.

1:48 What a surprise, Samus is not one of the fighters that takes damage in water in Ultimate, seeing as any form of Liquid has been a hazard to her in her own games, hence why there never had been any underwater sections in Metroid games.

Ya boi Kerbe Turns Out that Samus actually can handle regular water in her games, her power suit even lets her be underwater indefinitely without an air metre. She moves through water the same way Sonic does by only walking on the bottom, my findings only recently came from here: metroid.fandom.com/wiki/Water
