In this review I look at the Evolution R185CCSX+ circular saw/track saw and Evolution's ST1400 saw track which is designed for use with this saw. This is a great combination and is a brilliant solution to the problem of cutting plywood sheets, taking a few millimeters off a door or long straight cuts on any job. Evolution also sell a 2.8m track ST2800 for longer cuts.

Thank you James, what a fine comment for a reviewer to receive! I am not on commission, but I do like Evolution gear. They ask me if I want to review a tool and I always say yes, because I like the way that they listen and respond to their customers. I review products for a few different manufacturers, but Evolution are my favorites. I do get to keep the gear. :-)

Thank you for clearly explaining the differences between the CCSX and the + version. It's nigh on impossible to find that information listed elsewhere. I had assumed it was just the bag and the track that were altered.

I almost got the one with the 3 tracks included. I wanted one with the LED and the better blade. Thanks to you I changed my order asap. Good review you even included info other reviewers didn't have any idea about.

Pretty much a perfectly relevant review for what my son needs. I've sent him the link and recommended the saw. The [+] version has some real advantages over the non-[+], especially the longer cable. I've seen reviews that say the standard version that comes with track does not include track clamps. I recommend getting the [+] and buying track separately.

Another great review which answers every question for me. I've never used a track saw before, so was a bit wary about getting the right one. Full marks for showing the difference between the SX and SX+ which isn't obvious on Screwfix unless you know what you're looking for. I'll be ripping some scaffold boards along their length so will probably get the ST2800 track too (costs almost as much as the saw unfortunately, but I need it). Cutting steel was a real eye-opener, and there's one job I had in mind that this should be perfect for. And if you saw the bottoms of my old doors, which look like they've been planed while I was dancing on roller skates and eating a bag of chips, you'd know I needed this years ago! Thanks!

I believe this saw is also compatible with the Powertech guide rail which is much more of a quality rail then what comes with the Evolution.

Hi Russell, thanks for the review much appreciated. I'm very close to thinking of buying this saw. I'm just interested as to why you mentioned you would go for the standard instead of the CCSX+ ?

The + does not come with a track and for me the track is way handier than the carry bag and LED. :-)

So russell it can cut six mm plate that is very good like I ask you in yr previous vedio so if you can get a blade that can cut metal only with their saws then that will be very good also it means when u need to cut any thing else you have the black that will cut other materials when u need to hope u get my point
@RussellPlatten

Sorry Keith. I just checked my blades and they are suitable for 6mm mild steel. I do not cut much mild steel with my saws. I use them for wood mostly. :-)

So. No negatives? It cut an exact 90°? No flexing when set to 45°? Blade parallel with the track? Ah. A perfect track saw.

I have no issues with the track or saw. I have used it to cut plywood sheets in half, it performed well and it made life way easier. I have not used it for anything else, but I am glad that I have it. There is no such thing as a perfect saw, this is a good saw to have in the workshop! :-)

Thanks for the demo Russel do you know if you can use the guide on a bevel cut at 90degrees please I want to cut french cleats using it ?
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 2 года назад
I am not quite sure what you are intending to do. You could cut french cleats with the saw set to cut 45 degrees on a bench. If you want a steeper angle, you would have to try and make some kind of jig and I reckon it would prove difficult. :-)

Thanks for the info. I have a question. When cutting without track, your body seems left of centre of the saw. So comfortably both hands on the saw, with the saw slightly right. It looks a comfortable and natural position When cutting using the track, your body is over to the right of the saw and your arms are left of your body. Almost stretching across the saw to grab the handles. This looks awkward and uncomfortable. Surely this is a design flaw? I have the same saw and never used it on the track because of this.
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 3 года назад
There is no other way to use the circular saw on wide material Steve. it is the same with or without the track. Using the track makes it much easier and safer. If you imagine cutting a few inches off the end of your bed using a saw you will see that you have to either stand to the side and push the saw or climb on the bed and push it. :-)

Hi, very good review Russel, may i ask something.. why you leave gap ~1mm between 2 tracks? Just wonder. Thanks.
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 5 лет назад
I don't know for sure, but I reckon it is to allow for expansion as the track is aluminium and the inserts are steel. Aluminium expands twice as much as steel for the same temperature change. :-)
@chrissammels5444
@chrissammels5444 3 года назад
The rails are very unlikely to perfectly align, when butted up tight together, and the leading part of the saw will jam slightly as it transitions to the next rail. With a gap, there is sufficient tolerance or slack in the alignment for the saw to find its way more smoothly across the joint. This is Evolution’s explanation, and it works in practice.

Hi Russell would the sx+ be a viable alternative to there standard circular saw.is it alot bulkier?.was considering the standard but want the a bag anyway.i won't be cutting much sheet material but have a couple of doors to alter so might not need to purchase the tracks.might use your homemade jig technique in your review ofthe standard saw .I see it has a bigger motor also and longer lead .just wondering if it is worth it as mainly used as a standard circular saw or too big many thanks
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten Год назад
I still have both saws Paul and I only use the SX when I need the track for cutting sheet materials. It is a bit too bulky for the other tasks. It would be fine for them, but I generally prefer the SL and use that for most jobs. The jig works a treat for trimming doors and you could also make one for sheet materials. The track saw is considerably better for long cuts as the track physically stops the saw moving off the line whereas the jig relies on the user to keep the saw against it. The SL is my goto saw. I hope this helps! :-)

Nice review. I like your approach. I'm considering purchasing this tool as it comes with the track and at the price point it seems unbeatable. Is the cut at exactly 90 degrees out of the box or did you have to make any adjustments?

Another sale pitch -- Don't believed whatever this guy talk. The saw is weak -- not enough power to go thru 2 pieces of plywood, and the tear off. They have to redesign the motor and the track saw. The splint guard is not good.
