Evolution Rage 5S Table Saw Re-Review After One Year of Use 

Hi Great review I purchased this saw last week after watching your and other reviews here on youtube. Works great for me straight out the box. Plus Saxon are now producing blades with the 25.4 mm diameter which is a bonus (available on Amazon)

Thanks from Germany. My Evolution Rage 5S it is great and very flexibelety. Evolution is not so well known in Germany. I use a Freud 40 tooth blade. the saw blade from freud is very good. With the lower speed of the Rage 5S it goes through more slowly. but this is not a problem in itself. I recommend the adapter rings from Bosch. as shown in the video. Please note the leaf stem thickness. There are different strengths of these rings. from bosch the adappter rings fit perfectly. I had others from the bay (oh sorry ... I mean germany with the bay actually ebay. with the rings from ebay, the saw blades run out of round. I have installed a soft start module in my Evolution Rage 5S. There is a video of a German Yuotuber showing the installation in the Rage 5S. The channel is HeimWerke. The man's name is Arron. Arron has shown further improvements in Rage 5S videos. the parts for the improvements can be bought in his shop. The casters for the table extension, for example. so the extended table no longer hangs down. he adjusted the rolls of the table extension to the right very precisely and made them himself.Sorry for my bad English. I used the google translator for this. i hoppe we can find Evolution much more in old Germany. I have from Evolution the miter saw Rage3 and metall miter saw EVO 355. evolution is great and a good price. The Bosch GTS 10 xc table saw is very popular in Germany. The Bosch Saw is just too expensive for me. I have the BS350 band saw from Record Power. a disc grinder DS300 from Record Power. Wet grinder for sharpening the hand tools also from Record Power. these two English brands are very good and I am very pleased with them. t is a long comment. So based on your informative review i had committed myself to grabbing one at screwfix....... But! Yes there is a blade issue! I telephoned evolution and they confirmed that using any blade other than dedicated evolution blade will absolutely invalidate the warranty. They stated that other blades designed to run at higher speeds will overwork the motor and other blades generally have a bigger kerf which will damage the gearbox 😂 Hitachi here i come!

Another candid and informative video.. thank you. I own the Evolution sliding miter saw and am quite happy with it as I am not using it for "fine" work. I especially like the slow-start feature. Next it was time to buy a table saw (here in the US the Evolution is about $380) and decided on a Grizzly ($400). Dewalt saws range from $300 to $600 here but I have no experience with them. The 2 major strikes against the Evolution are ones that you mentioned: slow blade speed and the 1-inch arbor. Buyers should think long and hard about the limits this places on the saw's ability to do precision work by limiting blade selection.

This video was excellent, really excellent! Very matter of fact whilst remaining interesting. You have a very relaxed style, very natural. Subscribed! I came specifically as want this saw, I don’t trust the manufacturer reviews for honestly outlining the pros and cons as you did. Great job!

Thank you for a comprehensive video. I have used bosch full kerf woodworking blades (with reducing ring for the bore) and the saw has performed flawlessly. Still a great saw for the price and very happy with my purchase. P.s. I have a similar problem with my riving knife with it angled slightly so it pulls the work piece away from the fence. I will try your advice to adjust the bolt tension. Great tips.

I've had mine almost a year now and it's fine. Dust under the saw I am going to build a collection box with an additional extraction outlet. Also, I have a Dewalt blade on mine with a reducer and it is fine. The mitre is bad so I have built a mitre sled for mine and it produces great results super quick.

I too had to return my Evolution mitre saw twice before I got one which was correctly machined but as you said Evolution customer service was just very helpful every time and sorted out the issues very quickly.

Hi Tomasz, My machine purchased in the UK September last year has the new type blade guard and for all I have used it for up to now has been no bother at all. I do agree about the soft plate and will be making an aluminium one when I get home (if I get home this year with this virus problem) I will machine a new plate with stiffeners underneath from half inch aluminium plate that should cure that problem. i had one problem with this saw which was an easy fix. using it one day i found the timber was coming away from fence after the cut .the problem was dust extraction hose was attached from the side of saw and had the saw blade assemble under tension and was tilting the blade . easy fix made sure hose was fitted in line with saw and under no tension, after that cuts where good again. Regarding miter gauge looseness , i put some shims in track under gauge pushing it up into track tightening into the sliding bed

Great review on saw and good tip on riving knife. I'm in the process of making a zero clearance plate. If you want some photo's your than welcome. It still in working process but I think it will work and welcome your input on it.

Mine had several problems contacted evolution and within a few days is was collected and a brand new machine delivered 4 days later now its pretty much spot on apart from the dust that collects under the saw 👍

Another great review. I use my copy of your sled more often than not! I agree with your point on the riving knife, I had similar issues. It's a great machine though, with some really good features. I also use a Saxton blade with no issues. It came with a full set of reducing rings. Cut wise it's fine.

Thanks for the review and update! I also have this saw (not common in Germany) but wish I would have spend a bit more. I made a zero clearance insert from acylic for it and installed a soft start. That thing was really scary to turn on before that :) Also made an insert for a router. Biggest problem with it now is the parallel guide. It is just not reliable without measuring front and back each time. Also better to clamp it down to reliably stay in place. The riving knife sometimes also causes problems as it seems to be slightly bent. Guess that can be fixed. All in all the saw is ok, very mobile and better than anything else in this price range that I know. Also: Dust collection, flatness of the table, blade guard not opening reliable or getting into the way (I just removed it)... it has its limitations and I should have invested more, but all in all - yeah it is not bad. So if anyone is interested in mine - let me know 😂Anna

Good, fair review Tomasz. I had problems initially getting the blade perpendicular to the table because there wasn’t enough adjustment. When I raised this with Evolution they sent me two ‘internal documents’ that solved the problem by describing other adjustments not covered in the manual. One other irritation is the non-standard sizes of the mitre slots preventing the use of third party mitre gauges. But, now I have copied your sled that is no longer a priority. Thanks, Paul. 👍

Hi Thomasz instant fix with the zero clearance plate, and I have always done this with all table saws is once the fence is were you want it, I just push a peace of thin plywood or mdf though the blade then clamp in place, problem sorted!!

Hi Tomasz, I purchased the Rage 5S on Xmas and so I used it since a couple months. I agree about all you said. Its main issue is the plate, which is too flexible when you push on it and it has a too wide gap in which cut-offs get stuck, therefore impeding the cut of thin pieces without substantially ruining them. I just ordered a sheet of 4mm thick aluminium to make a zero-clearance plate out of it but I hope to see your solution before. I did not have any other issue. My saw was already delivered with the “new/improved” safety blade guard. I find it cumbersome, it obstructs cuts of thin and/or narrow pieces and I do not use it most of the time - basically because one cannot use it altogether with a table sled. Unfortunately, without it, you lose a big part of the sawdust collection, sa one of the two tubes is attached over the guard. Being it my first tablesaw, I preferred to buy a wood-dedicated blade from Evolution, mainly because I read about the risk of having the blade wobbling if used with an adapter ring. I’m looking forward any serious test of 30mm-bore blades on this saw. As per the underneath dust spillage, maybe it could be solved via a sensible use of tape (something I'm not very keen to, being old and fat.) All said, I think I made a very good purchase, even at 350€ (price of Amazon Italy; today it’s at 380).

Hi Tomas, Very good video showing the positives and negatives of your table saw. Think I have a hybrid of your saw. I'm fairly sure that the Chinese manufacturing company that made your saw also make a number of saws to whatever the customer wants. I know that the Chinese can do that well these days. I actually looked for a cheap table saw and found one in Aldi Store, here in Australia. It has many features like yours apart from the fence, clamping front and back or the extensions you have either side. I also don't have a built in sled. And at a mere AUS $149, I can now see why I purchased the "Plain Jack/Jane" of table saws. I need to make a decent sled for mine so I'm off to watch your "How to make a sled? video. Maybe it will give me confidence to know that a sled can work accurately on a pressed steel table top.

Hello from the USA, so back in March of 2020 i decided to buy the Rage 5s based on your review... now that my business is taking off im looking at cabinet saws that will do Dados and 52 inch rip cuts. I was really upset when i found out i could not use my dado blades in this saw. Then i really did my research and found out about European law on Dado stack. I really appreciate the tip on the riving knife as i had been fighting mine for a month before i decided to add a paper wedge to the side and get it to align with the blade... The blade guard is rubbish and i cut off the secondary vacuum port and hooked my shop vac directly to the back of the saw also found that the saw here in the usa the Arbor is 5/8 inch and came with a spacer to adapt to the 1 inch evolution blade. I also agree with you on the blade cover, i wish it was cast aluminum instead of what ever its made out of now... like you i was thinking about a zero clearance insert but think i will make a sled instead. The final point on the miter sled i found it to be sloppy in the channel so to fix it i used 2 strips of Duct tape on the bottom and that tighten it right up. I did have an issue where the saw wouldnt maintain 90 degrees after the saw was turned on and off... then i learned how to tighten up the locking lever and that fixed the issue Just wanted to say this video was spot on with what ive been experiencing with my saw as well.

Hi great review. You say this saw can cut full sheets of plywood. With the saw cutting width only 590mm and plywood having a width of 1220mm how would you cut a full sheet down the middle to 610mm

Hi. I considered selling my saw but a few videos from yourself and there's a setup video by Hand-i-craft that gives some great tips on setting up. Once this saw is setup, at this price there's nothing that can compete. The tip about adding tap to the bottom of the mitre guage by Hand-i-craft is well worth doing I have fit the Freud LP40M 025 250 x 2.8 x 30 x 60T Cross Cutting Saw Blade using a Bosch spacer and had no issues

That's an impressive little saw with the extendable table wings and the built in sliding table. You have to use the best specific blades for the job you can afford. There is no problem using the reducing bushes at all apart from they must be a good fit and thinner than the blade. They are common practice in lots of wood machine shops. Great review. Pitty about the low spindle speed.

I think i was a lucky one! Came square and good. Newer design blade guard was good but came badly adjusted, i needed to raise the riving knife higher to allow wood to go full height of blade. Overall very happy so far! Will prob change the blade soon though, not a great fan of it.

good morning Tomasz, I have ungraded to the new translucence blade guard and find it much safer/better. That said for a lot of my cuts I don't use the guard, I use a Grr-Ripper. Thanks for the tip on the riving knife. ive had mine about 6 months and the blade supplied still does a great job. Ive put Gorilla tape on the base of my sliding mitre and that has improved the fit.

Just FYI, I'm using a Diablo 90-tooth blade (expensive beast but great for wood crosscuts, ply, etc.). The blade is 30mm bore but comes with its own set of adaptor rings including 25.4mm, and I've had no problems with it. BTW my blade guard works fine (it's the clear type). I had to raise the riving knife so that the guard attachment hole is at least 10mm above the blade; then the work piece always fits under the guard when the blade is at that height.

It seems making a zero clearance plate for this particular saw should give you more options. Seeing that you can make it of sheet metal or aluminum. Thanks for sharing your experience with this saw.

I have just put a Saxton 40t blade into my R185CCSX+ hybrid track saw and the result was a fantastic cut. The track saw (1600w) has a no load speed 3700 rpm and I believe the rage 5 (1500w) is 2500 rpm , based on UK 220-240v

How can I adjust the rip fence? My rip fence has a play in the untightened state, which means that the rip fence is not really parallel when tightened. Thanks for your answer.

What's you view on accuracy of this saw? i.e. if you wanted to remove a fraction of a mm from a previously cut piece is it easy to adjust the fence? also does the fence by small amounts? And does the fence always stay square when moved?

Hi, Great video and very helpful because I have just picked up a second hand Rage 5-S. the one thing I have noticed is that at the moment, the blade is not parallel to the mitre slots. You covered how to adjust the rip gate but do you know if you can adjust the blade itself to bring it parallel to the mitre slots? Thanks

As a newbie, I'm just starting out, I have been looking at table saws and this Evo was at the top of my list. Having watched your very informative video (thank you) I am just a little worried that it may not be the best choice. I can afford a little more than £300 for a saw, but not the thousands that are needed for professional ones. Would you recommend this saw for a beginner, or should I perhaps consider spending another 1 or 2 hundred pounds on a DW, Bosch or similar?

Well I followed the advice of many and bought a Rage 5-s, and its been a disater, their customer service is poor, should have been delivered on Tuesday but arrived 4 days late, opened the box and loose nuts, bolts and washers fell out. I assembled following their video as the manual was not good, to later find out there are errors in the video. During assembly I noticed corrosion under the paint on the pressed metal base along with a dint, I discovered where the bits loose in the box went and installed them along with tightening up many loose screws/nuts & bolts, got ready to try the saw to find the blade fouling the plastic dust extraction case, this was worse with the Evolution wood blade as its actually bigger by a few mm that the standard blade. Also all the plastics around the blade are very loose, this may be correct, but who knows, I am waiting for a new dust extraction case as they think mine may be warped, all in all not a good start.

Thanks for your videos on this saw, I bought one based on your reviews! How do you ensure the blade is parallel with the mitre slots? There doesn't seem to be any adjustment apart from the 4x hex bolts which isn't very precise. If I could align the blade with the slots, it would make keeping the fence and my sled square a lot easier. Maybe I'm doing something wrong!

Hi Thomasz Could you not make the clearance plate stronger from underneath? I also have one of these and am very happy with it. I had a bent extension arm when I got it and as you say, they were very helpful and efficient. Thanks for the vids.

Hi Tomasz, been watching your great videos and especially the reviews of the Rage 5S and decided to take the plunge and buy one. Due to shortages (possibly caused by your good reviews) I have had to wait 5 weeks. It arrived today and I have finally got it assembled and was checking over the settings. I found that 0/90 deg stop was about 1deg out so have had to adjust it. But I was hoping you would answer a question for me. The table top is not perfectly flat, possibly 1 to 1.5 mm bow from front to back. Do you think that is acceptable?

Saxton do blades on their website that are specifically made to fit the evolution saw. Reasonable prices too.

Hi Thomas, I have had big problems with the RAGE5-Stable saw. I bought one and found the table was distorted, so I changed the machine. However the new one also had exactly the same faults. This means that some or all of these machines are made with a table that is not sufficently flat. You can see the video I made showing the faults. Neither of the two machines I have had are able to cut accurately. The machines were both fine for cutting large sheet material but you could not machine up a nice rectangular section of timber for joinery purposes. The measured angular distortion between the table to the left and to the right of the blade is between 2-4degrees. @ . Can you check your machine and see if your table is flat. I wonder if I should try and swap for a third machine or give up? Many thanks.

Great information! While assembling my Rage 5s, I found a small black spring about half an inch long and a little over a quarter inch in diameter with a hook on each end. The instruction doesn't mention this anywhere. Online parts print seem to have it around the latch pin of the stand, but it's a bit difficult to tell due to small size. Do you know where this black spring belongs and how it should be installed? Thanks!

Saxton Saw blades do blades that will fit, they are 30mm bore but they supply a reduction ring to fit 25.4mm. I but all my blades from them, they are better priced and decent quality. I use them for my Dewalt recipocating saw, my circular, and my current table saw. I am thinking about one of these for space purposes. I have an evolution motor- gen- power wash setup and it's great, not had any problems (yet). by the way you can find Saxton on Amazon, or direct.

Does the standard blade cut white board cleaning without chipping it?

I'm going to try and paint quality enamel onto the miter gauge and bake it in the oven and see if that closes the gap.

Hi there from America, hope you are taking care of yourself and your loved ones at this time. This table saw is still in the running for one of the table saws I will end up purchasing. This Evolution is pretty expensive here in the States. It is at the same price point as one of the DeWalt contractors saws that is rated really high. I will probably be getting the Ridgid table saw that is about 30 US dollars cheaper, and here is why: The Company Ridgid has a policy they call LSA or Lifetime Service Agreement. If you register your tool on their website, they will cover the cost to repair it and maintain it for free for life! That is a pretty good deal. What is really great is that also applies to their battery powered tools. Not only are they guaranteed for life, but they replace your batteries for free too. That is a pretty sweet deal. That is why you see so many American You Tube woodworkers with at least a few Ridgid tools in their shops. If I could pick up one of these babies (Evolution table saw) for 247.74 dollars (200 Pounds), I would grab one tomorrow. Thanks for the great info on this saw.

Hello. I thinking about Dewalt but it's not the cheapest table saw. I'm just starting my travel in woodworking. Do you think i can take something mutch better for more money? I think about couple projects in my garden like pergola, chair, table, fence. Maybe in future if i learned more make kitchen cabinets. Thanks

Peter, from Australia will be looking at buying one of these when the new stock lands in the country, my biggest concern, do you think the machine could rip through 4x3 Oregon without damaging motor? Cost here is $550 the other saw I’m looking at is the Makita MLT 100 which revs a lot higher then the evolution

I have the same saw and love it, used it to build a whole kitchen. However I'm confused about the fence extension ("rip fence plate") that comes with it. The manual is ambiguous but says something to the effect of "the rip fence plate must be attached to the fence for safety reasons". So I leave mine on all the time. It's obviously safer as there's no chance of pinching, but I lose about 5cm of cut width and it is harder to get straight cuts on some boards. Interested in your views on it. Clearly you don't use it on your saw.

Might be a stupid question, but can you not cut a narrow groove in a piece of hardboard, and simply hold it in place covering the blade with a couple of clamps, for when you're cutting very narrow pieces?

Tomasz, I see from an earlier video you have listed a screwfix Titan planer/thicknesser as your tools. did you ever do a review on this piece of kit?

Hi Tomasz I notice your riving knife is about level with your blade. To stop the crown guard from interfering with your work piece you will need to adjust the riving knife so it sits about 10mm above the blade level. This should solve your issue.

can't you put some tape around the mitre gauge track to make it fit better?

Dewalt has same problem with mitre gauge sloppy ,I bought a after market one.

have you had any issue with blade wobble ? I'm reading amazon reviews and seeing that. Makes me a little leary of purchasing

How accurate should the fence on this saw be, I've recently bought one, and really like it... but the fence is not great, its bowed slightly in the middle, and its a bugger to get things cutting straight. I'm really new to the woodworking machines, and come more from an engineering background, so i'm not sure if i'm expecting too much accuracy from the rip fence, after fiddling with it the other day when I cut a fence length piece I had it to somewhere around 0.5mm bigger one end than the other, is that roughly what I can expect, or should it be closer than that?

This saw has just gone on offer for £180 at screwfix so after watching this really useful review have taken the plunge and ordered one. I will be making myself a sled for it based on your other video too. I'm wondering how big your workshop is as I had a 3.5x4m workshop custom built (that was the largest I could have without needing planning permission!)

Hi, Thanks for the walk-through. As mentioned before, I've actually purchased this saw (£219 on Amazon) based on your and other reviews. I look forward to your review of the alternative blade performance. Personally, I had no real issues out of the box. The blade was absolutely perpendicular to the table and the fence was parallel to the blade. Although it came with the new, clear plastic blade guard, I don't use it, so can't comment on how good it is. I'll be doing a lot of thin strip cutting, so no matter how good it is, it will just get in the way. The contrast with my old, scabby Scheppach is night and day. The fence is superb, as is the extendable table! Okay, it sounds like a bullet out of a rifle on startup, and, like the Scheppach is quite noisy in operation, but it costs less than my orbital sander, so I really can't grumble. One minor alteration I did make, was to the fence locking mechanism. I'm not too keen on forcing the leaver all the way home each time I make an adjustment, but unless you use the rather bizarre, bolt-on attachment, the leaver gets in the way of the material. The solution is to shave around 4mm off the left hand side. Again, thanks for sharing.

Yo Tomasz, I got it all sorted out, stupid me! I send Evolution a mail with the question about a kind of “storage” clamps on the side of the plastic housing of the saw, but no reply. Do you know why they are there, it looks to lay or hang something there but what!! Keep on doing your nice and helpfull videos.

saxton do a 25.4 mm bore blade for this saw , I use it & it cuts fine if you don't rush it ,( I am a qualified wood-machinist & cabinet maker)

Hi Tomasz, these saws are now between £320 and £360. At this price do you still think it is worth a purchase? Or would you wait and save an extra £100 to go for a Bosch GTS/DeWalt? I'm just really starting out so I'm looking for a decent table saw to start ripping 4' x 8' sheets, but also something that will last a while. Many thanks and great content sir!!

Ive just taken delivery of a new Rage 5-s and its a great unit but I agree about the poor flimsy orange plastic plate - utter rubbish, and the new design safety guard is still not functioning properly, jamming the wood before the blade. They also took off the panic stop switch - why would they do that? I've ordered an alternative one from a guy on Etsy so I can stop it easier in an emergency. Its more costly than many budegt or entry-level table saws and has some great feautres like the exptending work surface and the slliding panel for the crappy mitre guide. This is my first table saw and its a game changer for my projeects.

I heard from the manufacturer that this saw does not support a dado set up. Have you been able to manufacture a plate to allow it to run a dado set up? I was ready to pull the trigger and buy one of these until I found that out.
