Even more, it seems to transform the pianist from recital accompanist into an equal partner, as in a vocal duet. You can see it in Ohlsson's face ... it's quite magical!
This entire recital is bizarre and I love it. All of the numbers are rare never heard art songs of the most declamatory and animated kind for low voice. Podles is hilarious with all her arm hand,face, gestures. Becoming a stern Nanny then the next playing a child wanting her dolly. The music does not always match the intent of the text ( it often doesn’t in Russian works for some reason) yet the Slavic Russian roots of the entire program have a creepy ghostly atonal quality. Podles is a real androgynous contralto with great scale and resonance. A rare voice that has been well taken care of. A treasure.
Well said. I was quite taken back when hearing Lullaby... expecting something dreamy and soft, but instead it sounded like a midnight haunted house tour 😅... but Podles is magnificent nevertheless
Stunning performance, magnificent artists. Ewa Podles conveys though her singing and body expressions the quintessence a artist that really understands and lives the music. Both musicians are in perfect symbiosis, neither of them needing a score, they truly embody the music. Thank you.
