Ewelme Cottage is located in Parnell, one of the cities oldest suburbs . The Cottage is one of three Historic homes managed by Heritage NZ in the City (the other two much larger and grander feature on this channel) .
Built originally by the Rev Vicesimus Lush during his tenure as Vicar of Howick (even today a 40 minute drive from Parnell) . Completed in 1864 it has - bar the odd early alteration - remained largely unchanged ever since.
Vicesimus’s descendants kept the house and maintained the family collection right up until they sold it to the Auckland City Council in the late 1960s, meaning that when you visit Ewelme you are very tangibly transported into the domestic life of a middle class Victorian clerical family.
Books, bibles, sheet music, furniture and furnishings, artwork, textiles, toys, games, family photos - more than 80 per cent of what you’ll find in the Parnell cottage is from the Lush collection, making Ewelme one of the richest and most immersive experiences of any property managed by Heritage New Zealand. (Heritage NZ partly paraphrased)
Heritage NZ's reference to Ewelme Cottage can be found here : visitheritage....
Trivia item, I lived for six years in the late 70's about 70m away in a grand old two story house right across the valley from Ewelme Cottage, my south facing bedroom looked right at the cottage !
Very much worth a visit and very different to the two other homes managed by Heritage NZ in Auckland being :
Alberton : • Alberton, Auckland , N...
Highwic : • Highwic Historic Home ...
My gear :
Canon R5 with 24mm 1.8 and 14-35mm 4L
Insta 360 x3 and DJI Pocket 2 (neither of which handle low light very well)

This is quite a charming historic home. It is lovely from the outside, and even better when stepping inside and seeing all the rooms so carefully furnished and maintained. The tea and biscuits a well suited, nice touch at the end. 🫖🍵🏠Enjoyed 👍👍

Hi , yes indeed, this cottage is far more authentic than many historic places I’ve visited as the family handed everything over to the city when they bought it and they’d kept it exactly as it had been left to them. The garden looks a lot better in the summer, and being a dull day unfortunately the outside video is a bit dreary. The tea and biscuits were a nice surprise for sure and those ginger biscuits were some of the hottest I’ve tasted , I loved the genuine old English bone china (I checked underneath) nice touch. 😀

Hi Anna, glad you liked this one . Compared to my two other videos on Auckland historic homes this dwelling is a heck of a lot more like how most settlers lived although as a minister I’m sure Mr Lush was rather better educated and had more books😀. Quite a while back I did a video on the Howick Historical village which has a pretty decent cross section of early buildings , I think its been my most popular video. Parnell is a lovely suburb with many 100+ year old timber buildings of various styles from grand to modest. When I lived there in the late 1970’s I used to bike to work , it only took ten minutes it’s so close to the city. Not many cycle commuters back then I can tell you 😎

Fantastic coverage for the cottage and it's history Chris. Another gem I overlooked while living in Auckland. My brother and a dear friend lived in Parnell. Shucks. Well I am glad I've see it through your camera lens. Great music too. Love your videos Chris. Shared it.💖🇳🇱🙋‍♀🇳🇿👌

Hi, thanks a lot . Definitely a gem, but only open for a short time on Sundays and not the best parking in the area so I think its missed by a lot of people , the other historic house are open all week. Unfortunately its pretty gloomy inside so video was a challenge and as you saw the results pretty grainy but no plan B , I thought the tea and biscuits was a nice touch, they don’t do that at the other houses. Thanks for the share 😀

Thanks Peter, I wasn’t so happy with the indoor video but the place is as dim as hell inside. The contrast between the R5 images with the RF 24 1.8 and the Insta 360 video is pretty stark . Yeah the tea and biscuit was a nice unexpected touch , not provided (free) and any of the other historic houses. I can tell you those ginger biscuits had a kick 😀

Thanks for sharing more of New Zealand's history with us Chris! What a wonderful cottage and step back in time! It's like the family just went out for a walk. I loved seeing all the books in the study... there's nothing like reading a real paper book. It's so nice to see all the personal items and the kitchen, you get a feeling of what their life was like. The staircase sure was narrow! Very exciting that you used to live right across from the cottage... and thanks for showing us the aerial view to get a perspective! :) Very nice photos and sharing! :) Like Like! Have a great weekend! :)

Thanks Jennifer, really appreciate those comments 😀. Yes that staircase is hellish steep and I wouldn’t want to tackle them on a dark night with a candle for illumination ! It’s pretty easy to just transport yourself to a totally different time with a great deal of authenticity. My favourite room was the study with all the books, hard to explain even in this age of having the “rectangle of knowledge” in your pocket how nice it is to see encyclopaedia , of course I’ll be the last generation to remember what they are, heck I did my exams with a slide rule. Before I retired I brought it to work and showed the research team I was in (comparative youngsters) my Faber Castell slide rule - none of them knew what its was, very disturbing !!

Hi Cerita, glad you like the tour of this lovely cottage. What it lacks in size compared to the two other historic homes in Auckland it makes up for in its incredibly authentic furnishings . When I first came to Auckland I rented a house with friends just across the valley from the cottage and at that time (the 70’s) you could see the cottage (less than 100m away) , these days my old place is complete hidden. 😀

Hey thanks for the visit 😀 having owned a hundred year old house (not as old as this one) they aren’t so hard to look after except for finding matching materials , they were simply built but in this country poorly insulated. Pretty much the first thing is trying to work out how to make them more thermally efficient 😀. But they are so much more elegant than today’s mass produced homes !!

@@Chris-NZ I agree I'm more keen on authentic homes but finding the efficient materials to maintain with the right people who would value this way of living is becoming more rare now thanks for sharing Chris 🇳🇿☕⭐ gotta love our kiwi homes with character aroha nui.
