So an ex-battlefield 2042 developer spoke on the Drawcall podcast about their experience developing the game. Jim Hejl goes over the mistakes made and the experiences learned from the rocky road that was the launch of Battlefield 2042. Not shocked by anything I heard based on the release. Remember this is the system that produced zombie farming where zombies couldn’t even climb ladders.

Very cool to hear, I used to do similar tasks to optimize operating systems. I think a lot of it has to do with trying to cut corners, you really need top notch programmers and trying to cheap it out may come back to bite you. If you have your own engine you really need to educate your workforce on how to get the most out of your engine.

May have been, but the podcast Jim spoke about this was released August 8th earlier this month.

COD also has their own engine. They’re not being phased out just yet. Naughty dog, many top tier games of the past 15 years use their own engines. Everybody going big with Unity and UE are newer than Epic Games. It’s a reminder how new game dev still is as we’re just getting to a solution with UE but most of the dev publishing companies aren’t going to just start using it because they had their own before UE. That’s just giving money to UE they could keep in house for better or worse especially if you’re engine has secret sauce which Frostbite does with large maps and real-time destruction while still looking like the best design and detail. UE aid just getting large scale with Detail with Nanite and the other new libraries. That would be going backwards. Maybe for small parts like character design or buildings but not the whole engine. They use much of the same tech so you can cross file types amongst engines were possible.

If you played all the battlefield titles you should know from the first time playing bf2042 that they copied a bunch of stuff from bfbc2 . And the problem with that is the games after that made improvements on many things 1. Look at the gun bouncing while running ! this hasn’t been a thing in battlefield since bfbc2 it’s corny looking and breaks immersion 2. Throwing out ammo or health kits with one button has been removed. Throwing grenades with one button has been removed 3. Doing damage of 75 or more no longer gives a kill credit now it’s just a assist and this was changed after bf3 . 4. The soldier movement and aiming is the worst feeling battlefield I’ve played since bfbc2 And soldier movement in general has been bad ever since bf4/hardline era . Bf1 Bf5 Bf2042 soldier movement is garbage
