The UK prison system is broken. Far from working to deter or rehabilitate, 80% of criminals who receive cautions or convictions are reoffenders. Many prisoners are caught in an endless cycle of brutal sentences, facing a lack of housing or job opportunities once they get out.
VICE speaks to former prisoner and filmmaker Chris Atkins about his new book, ‘Time After Time’, which investigates why so many prisoners can’t stay out of jail.

Interesting to compare the results of the UK, US and Norwegian prison systems. It may seem counter-intuitive, but treating prisoners like humans, giving them responsibility and focusing on work and housing really does work (as proved by the numbers). Short-term cost, for long-term benefit.
@Jay22222
@Jay22222 3 месяца назад
I could be talking out my arse here, because logic does says it should have a higher immediate and upfront cost but warehousing people in the US and the UK for that matter isn’t exactly cheap either. I’m not so sure that the short term cost is that much higher anyway. Certainly if you factor in something like the reduced cost and pressure on hospitals, emergency services etc or the fact that you only have to house most for a fraction of the time AND the time they go on to pay tax and many other across the board contributions. Seems like a bit of a no brainer sometimes.

It's not only important to treat prisoners as humans while in prison, it's important to remember they're human when they're back outside too. I understand there's some crimes that will forever be unforgivable, but the system needs to change and so does our judgmental society, on many various topics beside this one.
@Dwigt_Rortugal
@Dwigt_Rortugal 3 месяца назад
Lack of empathy or even sympathy causes all kinds of problems in society. I was raised in a hard line partisan home with judgment of others and absolutes. There were mental gymnastics as we tried to convince each other that we were justified in our black and white thinking. As I've aged and been through things and been there as others have gone through things, I've learned that partisanship is an excuse to put on blinders and paint with broad strokes. It's okay and healthy to subscribe to ideas that people disagree on, but be willing to listen. Let the other person finish speaking and don't formulate a response before they're done. Regardless of how much we may disagree, we are all human and we are all in this together. I've learned that as I've listened and empathized, I've subscribed to ideas from both sides of "the aisle". Is being pigeonholed into one of two large buckets helping us live well together? I certainly don't think so. Listen to people who have gone through things, especially things that make you uncomfortable. All that said, there are truly evil people in this world that have zero remorse, feel that they are entitled to do horrendous things. And I mean really evil, not just your average drug dealer or burglar. Those people should absolutely be locked up, but I think they're in the minority of prison populations. I've never been to prison, though, so I could be way off.

Our ideas of rehabilitation usually revolve around education, job skills, and counseling. But this approach guarantees that many prisoners leave prison as merely better educated and better skilled criminals. Until criminals are taught how to know and feel their connection and value to others, learn how to shift their realities with positive thought, and are taught exactly how to live within society, no true transformation will take place.

I went to prison for stupid drunken violence for 18 months about 14 years ago. They wanted me to do BS courses to prove i knew what i did was wrong. They were convinced i had an 87% certainty of being back in prison within a year and because i said i will finish any scumbag they put me in a cell with when they sleep, that i have psychopathic tendencies (It was the environment). Long story short, i worked, saved money, told them to stuff all their mental rehab nonsense, got out and never re offended. They thought they knew me better than i knew myself 😂. Now i have more experience and skills than most people and i have a decent career and family. That's a big middle finger to all the rubbish that the cps and probation thought they knew about me. @T-top10 It's different in the UK to America. I stayed at a friends house on release and then saved to get my own place. I was managing a pub within about 2 years and since then skyrocketed. There are people who have done way more time. I can only imagine how hard even shopping is when there are people all over the place and so many different things on the shelves. It's all confusing at first after seeing the same few colours for 18 months and everyone going about their business in a manner where you are changing about the prison. Real life seems very hectic at first. I'm to understand that in America, your history is more freely available on file to employers. It's harder to get back on track.

I agree that these guys have it rough but government and the entire uk newsmedia have been openly discriminating against trans people for years and encouraging the public to do the same. This has the exact same effect on trans people’s lives as it has on guys like this. Everything becomes more difficult from finding employment to housing. Most of the trans people I know have at some point been homeless, done sex work, had drugs and alcohol issues, had ptsd, lost family and friends to this propaganda, been verbally or physically abused, been sexually harassed or assaulted. This is all what was common for gay people to go through in the ‘90s and prior. And this is just how this country operates. Westminster and the newsmedia pick on minority groups for the public to hate, be fearful of, or blame. And that makes navigating society a total nightmare when the public falls for it.

Sadly, a lot of American citizens just don't care and feel that if you made the choices to end up there then you deserve what you get without truly grasping the real costs to our society, costs that are not only financial. We focus far too heavily on the punishment aspects of prison rather than REAL methods of rehabilitation. Are there those who deserve to rot for the rest of their lives for such heinous crimes? Absolutely! However, far too many are victims of circumstances that are out of their control, suffering addiction issues, mental health, being abused, etc. and need rehabilitation, not being caught in the justice system loop.

The american citizens who're so pro punititive must come to understand, that they're no free from sin and at some point in their life have committed an offence, or they will. No1 is free from sin. The shocking truth is that the harsher the punishment in prisons the higher the reoffending rate. This is a fascinating insight, but I take issue with the suggestion that open prisons only house middle class white prisoners, this is far from true.. however they do house a much higher percentage of white middle class prisoners but simply because the kind of offences that get people sent to open prisons tend to be more white collar. It’s important to mention that nearly all life sentence prisoners spend some time in open prisons prior to release. The thing about ID and smartphones is interesting, it’s a problem that needs to be addressed.

The right wing (Labour) and hard right politicans (Tories) should be taking note of this, but they wont. Also throwing people in jail for slow walking, shop lifting and general protesting is disgraceful fascist behaviour!

If you do real time you’ll think twice of doing a crime that could locked you back up! If you get caught and did little time you think it’s sweet so you’re gonna do it again! That’s why more and more kids under 18 in America are doing hard core crimes

In an age where Jerry Seinfeld’s comedy is too much for college campuses a generation after I still would have cut my teeth to see him live, some information from a guest/speaker colleges would welcome might be interesting: “Been that way for 30 years.” - U.S. Justice Department on the lack of Human Rights in Oklahoma County Jail, 2020 “It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.” - Nelson Mandela 🥂🥂

Keep in mind, the same corporation (the gov) that designed the prison system, designed alcohol and weed prohibition, which failed .... So no surprise that the prison system has failed, which I'd say is a larger sign of the education system failing...

Comment "worked" if you never repeated a behavior when you got grounded by your parents or like if you spent your time being grounded planning the next bad behavior and how to not get caught again like I did.

This guy done a few months in a b category local then off to d category for the majority if his sentence. He is wrong in a lot of what he says. Every crime you can imagine can get a d category at the end as long as there behaviour is good and they haven't got a record of absconding.

Recidivism is way too common in California as well. I grew up next to San Quentin State Prison since my mom worked there. The U.S prison system was designed to profit as oppose to rehabilitate resulting in a corrupt and stressful environment. Ps Some sources claim recividism in California is 46% and some sources claim recividism in The U.S is 49%. Based on my observation wage inequities and the cost of living also play a factor. Pps I know crime is out of control all over The U.S , its not just "liberal" cities, it's also "conservative" cities. It's a human issue not a right or left issue.

Society doesn't make it easy to be a part of, especially if you're a part of a marginalised group which is what an ex-offender is. Even more so if you went into the system at a young age.
