Good question. The British lead a global campaign of brutality and have never been held truly accountable but their media is obsessed by what Harry & Meghan are eating. My late grandfather was part of the security services in Northern Ireland, and I've always been fascinated by The Troubles. On a personal level I think, as an Englishman, that NI should be united with the rest of Ireland. It's a historical anomaly and the Irish have suffered enough at the hands of English people. I hope the peace continues and Ireland unites peacefully....

Did you know the Irish military would do patrols searching for IRA members with the help of the British searching on the other side of the border. they hate them. Many people would consider an English person ( or indeed someone from the Irish Republic) trying to tell the people of Northern Ireland how they should be governed as an “ historical anomaly ”. I’m from Russia and before this video I didn’t really understand what kind of conflict this was and why are there "two Irelands" on the map. I have now read four books on the topic, including memoirs by both interviewers. I've watched dozens of hours of other interviews, including incredible interview with Seamus Kearney on John English channel. I watched documentaries, listened to Irish rebel songs. Thank you! These two men belonged to the Provisional IRA (PIRA). PIRA was the primary (overwhelmingly so) Irish Republican paramiliatary of the Troubles (1969-1998). The 'Real IRA' (RIRA) was a splinter organization formed after the 1998 Good Friday Accord (meaning post Troubles) by a minority of dissenting former PIRA members. RIRA was responsible for Omagh, not PIRA. That is a monumental distinction. Lastly, when it comes to civilian deaths (discussed from 8:54 forward), Troubles era paramilitary killings break down as follows: Irish Republican Paramilitaries - 2,057 killings, 722 of them civilian (which equates to a 35% civilian casualty rate). Loyalist Paramilitaries - 1,027 killings, 878 of them civilian (which equates to an 85% civilian casualty rate). I realize these acronyms and groups can start to blend, especially for outsiders, but your channel has 2.53 MILLION subscribers, so no excuses, get it together.
You fail to mention that the majority of Catholics (more than 50%) in Northern Ireland have consistently poled as being in favour of remaining part of the UK. A clear minority, only 30% of Catholics, were in favour of a "united ireland". Regarding the protestant population 90% in northern Ireland wished to remain as part of the Union with the UK. So why are you so adamant to enforce violently the wish of a minority on the majority?. Isn't such thinking actually much more in line with Putin rather than fighting for the rights and wishes of the majority of people in the country? You are effectively supporting the right to "take by military force" against the wishes of the population, yet at the same time you decry (rightly) that same idealogy elsewhere.
I served in Northern Ireland back in the mid 1980s. I still recall the first 'talk' we had about the IRA - "Forget all that you have heard about the thick Paddy - they are dedicated, educated and have the support of the local population". This was news to a lad from Cheshire. There was another talk about the Green card rules of engagement - the official talk and the unofficial one.

Just to point out a serious error in the subtitles - Loyalist are in no way in favour of N.Ireland leaving the UK . Loyalism is from the same branch of Unionism and they are very much aligned to the idea of N.Ireland being part of the UK. As the name suggests they are 'Loyal to the crown' . Unionist & Loyalist are terms used to denote persons from N.Ireland wedded to the idea that N.Ireland is and should be part of the UK. They almost exclusively come from a Protestant heritage. Juxtapose Nationalist or Republican are terms used to denote persons who identify as Irish and believe that N.Ireland is a part of Ireland and should in the future become part of a unified Ireland. They almost exclusively come from a catholic heritage. There are of course people there who are apolitical and neither identify one way or the other or both. They would see themselves regardless of background as Northern Irish , which is a unique and authentic identity in itself.
Absolutely absorbing conversation here so much to listen and learn from, I remember in the late 80s confused by the situation as they were the same people ie ethnicity wise, it is easy to blame Cromwell but that was hundreds of years ago. When talking about modern Ireland, one thing that needs to be mentioned was how a Protestant Irish Parliament successfully gained independence for Ireland between 1782 and 1800, during which time Catholics got most of their rights back, with most Irish people of different faiths uniting under the ideologies of either constitutionalism or Republicanism, with both in favour of varying degrees of Irish sovereignty/autonomy and increased personal rights. This independence ended when a failed Republican Revolution in 1798 led British prime minister William Pitt to intimidate and bribe the Irish Parliament into merging the Kingdom Ireland into the UK after an initial Union vote failed. Ireland’s Parliament was forced to merge with The British one (though the courts and civil service of Ireland remained separate, but nominally subject to Westminster from now on). People on both sides seem to have completely forgotten this chapter in Irish history, because Protestants and Catholics fighting together for an independent Irish Kingdom doesn’t fit anyone’s narrative, and yet it had a major impact on the island. Unionism, Republicanism and Constitutionalism all originate from the original Irish volunteers that used the opportunity of the American Revolution distracting Britain to revolt in 1782. This heralded the independence and has shaped all aspects of Irish politics, ever since.

The PIRA were infiltrated to the very top, including their army council. The collaboration between the British security forces & the loyalist death squads was a classic anti insurgency technique, the Americans did it in Vietnam with the Phoenix operation, which was a shit show in comparison.
They wanted what THEY felt was best for their country, the majority in the actual country disagreed and had their own view what THEY felt was best for their country. The conclusion was that planting bombs and blowing children apart in the streets was the way to settle the difference in opinion. I feel for those that were ripped apart by the nails in those bombs.

You are right about the irony. I’ve also read various nonsensical responses on your comments about Irish America. I, in fact, had to ask - Does nobody here read a history book? . The Irish/ Irish Americans in their various guises were heavily involved in the Westwards expansion of America. What Americans prefer to call “ manifest destiny” rather than colonialism. They fought and slaughtered Native-Americans as they headed West. At the Alamo twelve of the defenders were actually Irish-born, while twenty others including Crocket , Travis and Bowie were of Irish descent. On the basis that the land mass of the Americas including Canada and Mexico were not Irish then they had to be colonisers. The first Irishman in America did not step off a famine ship. Anyone who read “Bury me at Wounded Knee” will know about the mass hanging on the Santee Sioux in Minnesota ( 1862 - over 80 years after independence) - the largest mass hanging in US history and again at Sand Creek two years later with the Cheyenne and Arapaho. Patrick Edward Connor a Union General from Kerry was central and masterminded the Bear River Massacre of 1863. General Sheridan who parents were from Cavan attacked the Cheyenne , Kiowa and Comanche tribes driving them from the Great Plains and coined the phrase about “ the only good Indian etc”. The Choctaw people heard about the Great Famine from Irish soldiers and donated to victims - the soldiers then implemented the US Government’s mass displacement policy driving them to less fertile areas were many starved or died on the march. And the colonisation of the Americas was not “ mostly the Brits”. The French were North in Canada and South in the bayou and Delta. The Dutch had New York ( or New Amsterdam ) before the British took it. The Spanish had part of the Southern States ( hence all those Spanish names) but along with the Portuguese seemed to like South America. So really - it’s an easy mark for some of these respondents to jump on the British - the facts are a little different . While many would wish it were different I’m afraid that the Irish don’t get any prizes for their treatment of native people in many countries and , certainly in the Americas don’t have an unstained history when it comes to natives or other immigrant groups.

The IRA were at war with the Brtitish - it was a civil war, which is largely ignored in British media and history. A very sad reality that propaganda is alive and well in London media. But in saying that, the Provos (IRA nickname) weren't intent on killing civilian targets. They were intent on bombing strategic targets in order to obtain political leverage - just like the UK would do in Iraq, Ireland, etc. Its a fairly common practice. The sad thing is that many people were killed. The other sad part about it is that many people in Britain didn't like it when it was done to them, but when their own Army was off butchering others - they are hailed as heroes. Sometimes the truth is in the middle on both sides.
They did have serious problems with Informers, which hit a tipping point after Loughall ambush. Their bombing by proxy campaign in the 1990s was definitely major mistake, reaction was so bad, that even hardline Republican supporters were heavily against it their actions. I think Scappatichi was their downfall. Head of IRA security was an informer. He had penetrated their organisation in the highest of ranks. He got suposed informers killed furthering destabilising the organisation substantially and severely hindering republican support aswell from the public and families etc. of killed informers.

As John correctly states elsewhere, the Good Friday Agreement was a deal done between the UK and Irish governments with the Shinners and nutty Loyalists kept within earshot. That's about it. After Ruairí Ó Brádaigh and Dáithí Ó Conaill power and influence had been eroded with Sinn Fein, British military intelligence knew that Adams, McGuiness and co would be likely to do a deal with the Brits further on down the line. Gerry always wanted a career in politics anyway 😂 and McGuiness was militarily incompetent, despite his so called "ive done the business" persona. This is why both Adams and McGuiness never did any real jail time. They were more useful to the British establishment OUT of prison, not in it. Once in jail, an PIRA member loses their rank and so, if that were to take place, Brit military intelligence would then be faced with a possible unknown hawk taking their place and then running the show their way. That simply wouldnt be tolerated and allowed. So, it served a purpose for McGuinness and Adams to be out and in place, where they were designed to be! Another case in point, Eddie Carmichael was the Belfast Brigade OC of PIRA in the early 80s. He was standing up to Adams and didnt agree with how the movement was being run and funds diverted away from military operations and towards Gerry standing as an MP and so when he rocked the boat too much, his services to the movement were dispensed with (it was either leave or get shot dead basically). This is the Belfast Brigade OC we're talking about here. One of the biggest and influential brigade areas.

In the miner’s strikes too, she infiltrated the workers’ uprising with British Army operatives, taking the level of violence and mistrust to a fever pitch- there are even people today who have to hide in fear of their lives for being scabs back in the 80s. It's actually not, the IRA were acutely aware of the propaganda war against the British, and, for the most part, called in bomb warnings when targeting infrastructure. That's not to say they didn't kill civilians, they did, the same with any belligerent in a war scenario. under 50% of their victims were civilians, 89% of loyalists were, and the British army themselves had a unit called the MRF who also actively targeted civilians. On a last in first out basis we have quite a few of them to repatriate before we get to the 1600s and Plantation. . Indeed there are Protestant Unionists whose ancestors were on the Island of Ireland before the Plantation and converted after the Reformation. Lot of Viking descendants as well - are we sending them back to Scandinavia. Unless people can trace their heritage to Old Croghan Man or Cashel Man perhaps they all need to be repatriated…….Is this too much irony for you.? The point is how can you draw a date in time and say anyone who arrived afterwards has no rights - including the right to choose their national identity. If the bombs and the bullets didn’t move them a few quid won’t ; and who’s to say they’re the ones who should move - maybe Catholic nationalists should go back South ( although the South doesn’t sound too welcoming to any new arrivals at the moment given the way they are treating immigrants).
The whole saga could have been without bloodshed. The Irish should have been given their North back and become a republic. UK should have pulled out of the 1947 agreement on Dual Irish Nationality as well as UK residency status. Finally for good measure Britain should have pulled out of NATO as punishment for USA complicity

Actually Ireland voted for independence in 1919, they couldn't give the entire province of Ulster as there were too many Irish Catholics in it, so they have up six counties that could be gerrymandered, while the Irish hi Keith were horrifically oppressed, I suppose you know by now that even the British have admitted (because they've had to) that not only did the IRA not fire a shot on Bloody Sunday, let alone the first shot the only return fire was a single member of THE RIVAL FACTION of the Provisional IRA. that's what happened when they tried to rally peacefully, they got shot dead, then slandered

The wind that shakes the barley is based on the Irish war of Independence and the civil war that followed on the early 1920s. These men fought in the troubles which was between 1969 and 1998 and is a lot more difficult to understand and honesty very difficult to explain neatly. Two films that jump to mond that give you some insight into that time are "in the name of the father" and "bloody Sunday" there's also a VERY in depth documentary by the BBC called something like the secrets of the troubles you can find here on RU-vid if you're interested in learning more.

The reason for what i said was because it helped me understand the origins, intent and motivation for the IRA; that it came from a passionate and pure source, from being up against tyranny.
