I am one of the cousins he came to when he moved to Hamilton. Mum only ever told us that Waka chose to stay in Wairoa and never had a chance to ask him what happened. This is Wairoa I was born here. When I was young I couldn't wait to spread my wings and when my kids grew up I came home and enjoyed our mum before she passed. Growing up in the 70s in my hometown I was lucky no matter who was around our uncles looked after us. We were safe and loved. Playing until dark, going over the river to our aunties, down the river 247 no drama. Now in the year 2024 our place is still here. Astetics mean nothing. Our parents and grandparents instilled in us a love that tethered us to this beautiful place. Marae, mahi and community.
