I remember the Loughgall ambush in 1987. That particular East Tyrone brigade were very active during the mid-1980s. A lot of the SAS ambushes took out a number of the East Tyrone IRA volunteers. I remember thinking at that time, where were the SAS getting their intelligence?

The IRA were infiltrated at every level, look how easily they gave up when told to basically, when we decided to get involved in the Balkans. They were told, give up, or we take you out. Every soldier knows we could finish them over the weekend, we know 99.9% of them. Adams and McGuinness were informers, that's why they were allowed to become MPs. I heard from MI5 friend, though he would not name anyone, that the provisional Army Council of 7 had two informers in their ranks.

One of the SAS men involved was John McAleese who had taken part in the Iranian Embassy siege and was a veteran of the Falklands War. He took part in another successful action against the East Tyrone IRA. He was wanted on child pornography images which were found on his computer. He went to Greece and there was an extradition warrant for his arrest at the time of his death. His son John was KIA serving with The Rifles in Afghanistan by an IED in Helmand province.

Bobby Sands was in the IRA in West Belfast. He ran for election as an MP in Tyrone/Fermanagh. The British army didn't encounter Sands in the Tyrone countryside.
@davebrayfb
@davebrayfb Месяц назад
Probably not, but some Derry volunteers were killed in Fermanagh, like those killed at Kesh & the Gransha Hospital, but yeah Sands was from west Belfast. But he's right about Tyrone being betrayed by the leadership, I believe it was Kevin McKenna the commander of the East Tyrone Brigade from the late 70s - 1983 & was Chief of Staff from 1983 - 1997, he was the only person high up enough who had enough contact between the Army Council & the East Tyrone Brigade and also have the ability to pass on intelligence to the British forces.

@davebrayfb
@davebrayfb 28 дней назад
@@jackietreehorn5561 Well, yeah I can't imagine Adams or McGuinness green-lighting attacks like the 1993 Shankill Road bombing or the Warrington bombs the same year. But they centralized power much more than previous leaders like MacStofain, Daithi O'Connelll or Seamus Twomey who would just outline a general strategy & the brigade commanders & then battalion commanders would implement it. It's telling that the first bombing by the PIRA in England the Old Bailey bombing in March 1973, was done totally by the Belfast Brigade, the leadership just gave it the green light, and after 10 IRA Volunteers from Belfast were arrested for that the IRA Army Council then took over the running of the campaign in England using 3 or 4 man cells to carry smaller attacks that were more sustainable. Like, from the 18 August 1973 - 21 December 1974 bomb attacks mounted to one every three days, they had a northern cell, a west-midlands cell & a southern/London cell, operating at the same time. Then from 1977 - 1988 the campaign went back to less sustainable attacks but bigger attacks to shock the public, when small incendiary devices seemed to have little effect anymore. Like from 1977 - 1984 the IRA only carried out about 25 bomb attacks in England but they included a bomb attack on Chelsea Barracks which killed 2 people & injured 40 in 1981, in 1982 the Hyde & Regents Park bombings which killed 11 soldiers & injured 50 people, the Harrods bombing in 1983 which killed 3 police & 3 civilians & injured 90 & the Brighton bombing a year later in 1984.

@@jackietreehorn5561 I've seen a lot of interviews with John Crawley the Yank as well. He was also the second Yank involved in IRA operations in London. You got nicked for farting in the wrong direction. The Irish knew how to play the compo game and this kind of incident would have been reported and those involved investigated by a police force who wanted brownie points again from the same ones who wished them dead. As I stated Majors are company commanders in the Brit army they do not do house calls or raids. They plan and conduct them from a CP far from the point of contact/house. The only thing a major may have done is go to the house after a complaint with a bunch of flowers and apologise for his men's actions such had the BS gotten into the system because of politicians wanting their cake and eating it while grunts suffered. A couple of weeks before the death of Bobby Sands, I decided to begin the leaving process from the British army but it was cancelled when the Falklands war came up. I served there with airborne forces and left the army shortly after returning from that war. Over the next fifteen years, I covered war as a photojournalist in south east Asia, eastern Europe and east Africa. I went on to work for a US congressman and presidential candidate. War, politics and mainstream media is a racket. I now live back in my ancestral homeland of Ireland. Great work here. Thanks. I would like to speak with you. It must be linked to the Loughall investigation by the IRA. After Loughall the IRA conducted an inquiry led by Pete Ryan and the Head of Internal Security- Freddie Scappaticci. They interviewed over 100 Tyrone Republicans to try and ascertain exactly what had happened. Those names must have made their way to British Intelligence which then in turn made their way to the Loyalists. Then a very highly placed source was passing info on the Tyrone operations. The leak to me appears to have been a central leak. Most likely Northern Command, as they were vetting operations particularly after Enniskillen.

Interesting interview, as we know the army council was penetrated, but its obvious Adams was not a mole. East Tyrone bde was very committed, following Ho Chi Minhs zones of liberation doctrine, which was highly effective. Jim Lynagh believed the war could be won militarily but he was also a SF councillor. British SAS casualties were down played, parent units given of losses. From a military history and objective analysis it was a fascinating and unique conflict. After the SAS became effective in ambushes, SA bde which was the most adaptable bde switched to using 0.50 calibre Barrett sniper rifles imported from the US, to avoid ASUs being ambushed, which was operationally highly effective. The South Armagh sniper was all over the UK media
@johnroche7541
@johnroche7541 Месяц назад
The British had its highest casualties in South Armagh with over 130 KIA in terms of area including around 50 Paras. There was also some SAS casualties but some were undeover soldiers and not SAS. No doubt in my mind what the gent was saying about the Tyrone Btigade being both the most effective unit the 1PIRA had and they were also autonomous. Even Martin McGuinness had a hard time keeping them in some sort of order and it was exasperated further when their most influential and effective commander Jim Lynagh was strongly pushing for Maoist strategy of 'Liberated Zones' . As for the Loughgall ambush? Yes, I've heard the same rumour from a Republican. And yes whilst he stopped short of naming any names he was of the opinion that the eight operatives had been 'informed on' and he suspected the reason wax along the lines discussed in this video,

He served his time in military and if my memory is correct ive seen him elsewhere and he went on to become a barrister at law. So he is not a thick guy at all. He is now an old guy and memory probably faded a lot. He also sounds like he might be in drink a bit. But what he says is essentially true. The mil and police got their act together and the peace process is entirely due to the intelligence effort. IRA had no choice but to go the peace route despite disarming being a sham. They never handed all arms over etc. never would ( would You in their position). they were getting slotted of caught red handed and locked up every time they attempted a job. A lot of the cctv and anpr we all have everywhere today was developed by the boffins fighting terrorism. We are all being watched 24/7/365 a lot more than people realise. Rightly so.
