A great RU-vid video on cleaning both grey and black tanks with no bleach. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wUWGlm2gQfE.html Black tank cleaning After dumping the black tank and refilling it 1/3 with water 2-3 times to rinse it out follow these steps to an odor free black tank. Add 1-2 Gallons of water in the toilet. Next add 1/2 cup of Borax Soap in the toilet and flush. Borax has water softeners and provides oxidation (by way of the reaction of water and Borax soap which creates Hydrogen peroxide for oxidation) which will break down solids and particulates. Next add 1/4 cup of Dawn soap in the toilet and then flush the toilet. (don't be cheap use Dawn as it works the best.) Now you are done and will have an odor free black tank without using harmful bleach in your system. All done till your next black tank dump. Grey tank cleaning, Same as blank but also add 2 cups of Zep citrus orange cleaner as the last step. This and the Dawn helps break gown fats and oils from skin and whatever oils are left over on dishes, pots and pans while adding a fresh scent.
Thank you so much for bringing these tips to us! We will definitely check out this information, it seems really helpful! You definitely have a lot of knowledge when it comes to this 😃🙌🏼 we appreciate you sharing it with us and everyone else
Super tip: Close the black tank valve and let the flush hose fill your tank for about 7 minutes, then pull the black tank valve open and you will be shocked what comes out! Repeat this process a couple of times and you will continue to see waste in each flush. Simply leaving your flush running doesn’t really cut it, you must fill and dump at least twice.
Thank you for sharing Jonathan! We actually add this into our process but didn't want to advise teaching people to shut the valve and let it fill up if they are newbies. Too many stories where people forgot and it overflowed! You are right though, so much will come out if done right!
@@HappilyEverHanks ok so this happened to me and my boyfriend and we are pretty sure it either blew up or the whole tank detached and fell . Don’t get anyone to look at it until the 19th 😅
I do the same. I'll add ~10 gallons in my 40 gal black tank through the flush, then empty, and I was surprised what came out. Then I'll use the flush tank to add ~4 gal for my treatment (10%). save a drop water meters are great. Great video. I live in central PA
Another tip I saw that seems valuable: dump your grey tank for a minute FIRST. That way if you have a leak or if there's any problem with the sewer hookup, the fluids that escape are grey tank. Highly preferable to leaking sewage water. When you see everything is fine, close the grey tank and THEN open the black tank.
I'm a seasoned rv guy I run my rig all over the country working.I'm a union pipefitter and I appreciate what yall do its very refreshing to see a younger couples enjoying the rv life currently in monaca pa been here for 3 years fixing to head back to Alabama the Florida fir a much needed vacation! :) one great thing I did to my 5th wheel is I installed the Lippert waste master with the cam lock system so much better than a regular sewer hose! Best of luck with your travels God 🙌🏽 🇺🇸
Before I pull the black tank valve, I pull the gray tank valve for a few seconds to check the connections for leaks rather than having a stinky messy accident. Thanks, for the great videos
A great tip for newbies is to slow down and calm down when backing your rig into your spot. If there are people waiting to drive past your spot, let them wait!! If you try and hurry so you don’t hold them up, that’s when mistakes will happen and they can be pricey! Most other campers will understand and if they don’t, that’s their problem. If you run the rig into a tree or a pedestal, the people waiting will just drive on by, leaving YOU with an expensive repair.
Hey Lori! Absolutely agree, as soon as you start rushing...that's when the mistakes start coming! Better to just slow down and take your time like you mentioned 🙂 We appreciate you Lori!! So much! - Kyle and Renee
Thank you so much for the DETAILED instructions on this. We just bought an RV and know NOTHING except a few little tidbits from the previous owners. This helps tremendously. Thank you. I'll be watching more of your videos.
Newbie learning curve...day 5 of solo rv living, after I washed dishes late one night, the toilet backflowed. The sensors didn't indicate I was anywhere close to needing a dump. Getting all my oopsies out of the way in the beginning. lol Love your videos! You guys are my go-to.
I have an additional tip. I carry a second sewer hose in a second black hose container that I've strapped to our rig. We have been to a few sites where they were originally a dry camp set up and added dump hook-ups later. They were usually in the front of the sites for probably "ease to add" reasons. Anyway, our one hose would not reach. For the same reasons, we got an extension for our power cable and fresh water hose as well. The power cord is a little heavy but worth it in my opinion.
We're soon to be RV'ers, so I found your videos to learn some of the basics. I am just in the process of watching this one, and have a slight correction/suggestion. I deliver fuel for a living, and the process is similar in that spills are highly frowned upon in both black tank emptying and fuel tank emptying. My suggestion is, when hooking or unhooking the hose, always start with the empty end. At the beginning, connect the hose to the ground fitting first, then the RV. At the end, disconnect the RV end first, then the ground. That way, no big mess in the beginning if you accidentally open the gate valve. At the end, you'll be able to "walk out" any left over liquid that is left in the hose and drain it into the ground tank. If you follow that order every time, spills and even drips will be almost non-existent. Great videos!
This is really excellent information Max! Thank you very much for taking the time to write this out, it makes a lot of sense 😃 We will be sure to incorporate this into our routine from now on. Cheers to you, we hope to hear from you on other videos as well! Great feedback
We don’t rv full time, but we have owned an rv for a few years now and take it out camping all the time. I never knew about the burp for knowing when your black tank is full! Thanks for that tip. Last year we went on a longer than usual trip and once our sensor said full We kind of freaked out and found other toilets to use (there were some nasty campground toilets that fit the bill for the last 2 days of our trip). It hadn’t started burping, so now that I know that tip I’ll have more peace of mind on our longer trips!
@@CraigNiesenPhotography yes they are! I’ve been watching a bunch of their videos lately. Our RV life starts on 8/28! Woo hooooo! So I have to get myself as educated as I can by then! Have a great day Craig!
My husband and I are getting ready to purchase an RV--a Grand Design-Reflection 268BH 2021 model. I have been binge watching you guys and really enjoying it!!!. Love your sense of humor and how informative you both are. I am a retired nurse and my husband is a retired paramedic so we feel a kinship with you all. Thanks so much for your great videos--you both are incredible.
Aww thank you so so much ❤️We are so happy to hear that this video was informative and contained entertainment yet good information! We always love hearing from your and can't thank you enough for the support that you share with us 😊Much love from the Hanks family - Renee and Kyle
Ed this is so great to hear ❤️ we are truly happy that it was both entertaining yet informational and beneficial. Thank you so much for the continued support. Much love and appreciation from the Hanks family - Renee and Kyle 😊
My girlfriend and I are leaving for our first RV vacation roadtrip and your guys' videos have been very helpful and informative. The dos and do nots was great! We will definitely look up more videos prior and during out trip!!
Janice!! Thank you so much for your wonderful support! We really appreciate you commenting and look forward to hearing from you again soon!!! Have an amazing weekend and a great Fourth of July Janice! 😀👋🏼
Hi Kyle and Renee. I love watching your numbers rise!!! We move a lot when we travel and don't usually hook up when we stay at a campground. We only hook up when we are ready for the "dumping process" This is a sustainable video full of great tips and is fun to watch. ~Lucy
Awww Lucy you are always so amazing with your comments! We are so happy to hear that this was fun and more importantly had good information. Glad you caught onto how many times Kyle says “dumping process” as well lol Thank you so much for your continued words of encouragement. Much love and appreciation from the Hanks family ❤️😊👍🏼 - Renee and Kyle
Thanks for all the great information. We are not yet living the full time rv life. We still have about 3 years until we retire. My wife and I are both former military and I am a retired firefighter. So I would like to say thanks for all the great information from other public safety people. I have learned a lot from you guy and thanks for all the great information.
Thank you Russell! We really appreciate your support 😃 Also thank you for you and your wife's service! We are really happy and excited for you guys and your upcoming adventures in your retirement. What kind of RV will ya'll be traveling in full time?
@@HappilyEverHanks we are looking into getting a fifth wheel and a new f-350. I hope we will be able to possibly meet you guys when we get out on the road. Thanks for all the great information. I have pick up a lot from you guys thanks
That is fantastic!! We are really happy for you guys 😃👍🏼 We hope to meet up with y’all one day soon as well, that would be so much fun 🤩 Keep in touch, we enjoy hearing from you guys!
After a few times of looking for rocks to put on the 90° end of the sewer hose, my wife came up with the great idea of filling a long sock or two, one inside the other, with river rock and placing on top as weight to prevent 90° from popping out. Works great.
Not sure how we missed this one.... you did such a GREAT job with this one..... With all the new RVers.....this should have thousands of views.... hope its going to be an evergreen video for you. ~ Brad and Diana
Wow thank you Brad and Diana! Yeah unfortunately there is so much competition out there for us small frys lol hopefully it will get bigger! We appreciate your awesome words as always you guys :) Can't wait to meet up with you both soon!! - Renee and Kyle
You guys had some good tips. I have had campers for 30 years and I guess there were things that I did without even thinking about it. It was a good refresher.
Thank you guys! …love the step by step…..AND the burping! These are things us newbies have no idea about. I’ve always heard the sensors were iffy….and wondered how I’d know. ❤️❤️
Wow! This is the best video I’ve seen about looking after and dumping your tanks! And I’ve watched several! I’ve camped for years-in a tent camper and an Aliner. Both had cassette toilets. I recently purchased a Rove Lite 16RB and will be going to my local Provincial Park for my first shakedown trip next week. Thanks to the two of you, I now feel confident with the entire process. I’m only going to be camping for 3 nights, but I want to ‘practise’ dumping my tanks before I go on my first 3 week trip this year. I’m going to make sure that my grey water tank is pretty full. I’m glad to have found your channel! I’m now subscribed and look forward to watching both last and future videos. Safe travels, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦
I don’t even have an RV but I was just super curious to see this process 😂 we did vanlife for a few months but totally failed at it so we’d definitely like to try something larger like a pull behind RV. 😊 great video! You guys have great personalities!

WOW thank you guys so much! 😃And hey - we absolutely love you videos so keep. them. coming! You guys rock our socks off and we are happy to have your support and love. ❤️We really appreciate it. Much love from the Hanks family - Kyle and Renee
Not sure if this comment has been made but when I get ready to dump my tanks I let some of the grey tank go first so as to test all the connections. Would rather worry about dirty water than poopy water lol. Awesome video as always folks. Can't wait to run into on the road sometime. Be safe out there.
This is a really great point Eric! Thank you so much for sharing this inside tip with us and everyone reading 😃🙌🏼 hope you have a wonderful week, we will talk to you again soon! Stay safe!!
Not an RV owner, but this is one of those processes that worries me the most about RV’ing. You guys made it very simplistic. Great tips. #FamilyFullofNurses
Hey Edward! We felt exactly the same way that you did when first getting started..eventually it just becomes second nature, you would rock it 🙂Nice to meet you by the way! If you don't mind us asking, what specialties of nurses are ya'll?
@@HappilyEverHanks from midwives to ICU nurses. I was not a nurse, I was a cop! And my cousin transitioned into teaching at a university for nursing while she is pursuing her PhD in nursing! Lots of respect for you guys!!
I use a water meter on the flush hose. once the flushing is somewhat clear, I turn off the water, let the tank drain. shut the black valve and fill the tank with water while monitoring how many gallons go into the tank. turn off the water when about 95% of tank capacity has gone in. open the black valve and you'll be shocked how much color comes out. do it at least twice, maybe three times. that's what I call a super flush.
We have been camping for a couple of decades in a pop up. Never had to deal with black or gray tanks. Well, we had a portable gray tank we ran a hose to from the sink. Anyway, black tanks are something new since we bought the big rv last year. We have been on maybe 5 camping trips and on our last one, I discovered the drain in the ground at the rv park is... threaded. LOL. Up until that point, I just jammed the connector into it and sat some rocks on top.
As per Darkmuda01 below (and probably many more before them) I do not have a rig now but I will in April! I’ve watched close to 50 videos (or it feels like it) on this topic but I’ve never heard of nor seen burping. Way to go! I would’ve flipped out and called an RV doctor for sure. I’m a retired nurse (ICU) but I still intensely dislike and avoid the yucky in life when possible. Burping toilets would be included there. Thanks, Hanks! (Yep, I know this post is a few years late. Nope, I have no idea if it’ll ever be read but at least it’ll maybe help that pesky UTube algorithm?)
Hi Jane! This is so wonderful to hear that you will be getting a rig in April 😃 thank you for your wonderful support and for taking the time to watch her videos, it means so much to us! Also, thank you for what you did as an ICU nurse! We are both ER nurses and have much respect for that. Let us know if you have any other questions that we can be of help with in answering - Kyle and Renee
My RV tip: invest in several sets of battery operated motion detector and solar charged lights. We have some on our outside steps, some on our inside steps, one in the bathroom, and my favorite: one in the panel cabinet so I see the switches when we come inside in the dark.
Debbie and Larry that is an AWESOME tip!! Love this!! Thank you guys so much for sharing ❤️ we just got to our Boondocking site for the night and are going through the goodie bag you guys were so generous to give us 😊 amazing things you are working on and we can’t wait to put them to good use and share them!! So happy to have met you both and can’t wait until we can meet up again on the road! Much love from the Hanks family - Kyle, Renee and Dexter
First, Great Content! Very fun and informative videos. Keep up the good work! Speaking of cross contamination.. You should consider the order of hooking up and disconnecting your dedicated flush hose. You don't want to leave nasties on your knows that will get transferred when you aren't wearing those gloves. 😉 Ideally, you aren't using the same gloves after you handled the black tank hose, to hook up to the water spigot and your clean water panel. Hooking the flush hose up first, before your hands and gloves are dirty, and disconnecting it last, after you have secured your black tank hose and cleaned your gloves, should keep the dirty germs off of your water supply panel.
Thank you so much for your wonderful support and great tips!! This means a lot to us that you took the time to write this out for us and all who read ❤️Keep these great tips coming on other videos, we enjoy your feedback and learning
Love the videos. I'm in the process of going back a watching all your past videos. For the black tank I would highly recommend adding the VALTERRA Gate Valve. The one you glue onto your sewer pipe. (I will never have a poop bath again) Thanks for the content.
Awww thank you so much!! We try to keep the video as entertaining as possible LOL it’s not always easy when touching on a subject such as this 😂 seriously appreciate the support and all of the love - Kyle and Renee
Great video good information you’re the first ones that I’ve heard of about talking about the burping glad you brought it up every one should know that one
Hey Guys! Nice video. Well done. Just adding a suggestion. While flushing my black tank ( after the initial flushing and the water running clear) I'll close the black tank valve let the water fill up the tank (like maybe 3/4s) and then open the valve again. I'll do this process twice. You'll be surprised the additional stuff (klingons) coming out. Cheers! Jeff and Sandy
We do this as well most of the time, just didn't want to advise all peeps to shut their valve with the flush on. Too many stories of people forgetting and flooding their rig!
Well thank you so much!! 😊🙏 this means everything to us! We are happy to hear it is good information and easily digestible. 😃👍🏼 thank you for watching and commenting Steven!! - Kyle and Renee
Very creative editing! We are out camping right now...stopped at the dump station to watch another camper NOT using gloves, grabbing the end of the hose ( With his fingers inside the hose) where all the poop had just drained out...don't know that he cleaned his hands. 🤢🤢🤢 Keep up the good work!
🤢🤢 indeed!! Oh my goodness we have seen that as well in our travels, we can’t understand how some do such things! We want to thank you so much for you kind words and support! We hope that it brought some good content to you. How awesome that you are camping ❤️ so fantastic that you are out and enjoying life to the fullest. Feel free to reach out to us anytime. I'm not so sure that the black tank is the scariest thing about RVing. We all stand a chance of running into you guys one day. Now THAT would be scary. Not really guys, I'm betting you guy would be a scream to camp with. Keep the good stuff coming and give Dexter a treat for me.

Well I'm glad i came across your channel. My wife, 2 kids and I are starting our rv adventures and I didn't know how much there was to learn. Thank you for all the information on all the videos. It's definitely helping.
WOW! Thank you so much :) We really appreciate the feedback and are so happy to hear that it was good information. You enjoy your week as well 😃Also we will be hopping over to see what your channel has to offer. It seems like you have some really great travel videos:) - Kyle and Renee
I’ve watched many different Rv videos and owned a Rv for over thirty years, after a thirty year career of driving transport trucks North America wide and one weekly practice that should be practiced is checking the wheel bearing temperatures. Immediately after driving walk around and touch the rims near the lug nuts. If you find one wheel hotter than the others it may need attention and serviced if all feel the same temperature then the bearings are running good. I even do this with my small utility trailers.
Xionaira!! This is so fantastic to hear 😃 We are so happy for you!! So many adventures for you to look forward to! What kind of RV will you be traveling in full time?
Sounds like a beautiful rig that you guys have! Keep us updated on your travels, we love hearing from you guys 😃🙌🏼 Talk to you again soon!! - Kyle and Renee
WOW! Thanks so much. I am thinking about van or rv living. I am so lost on various terminologies. This has been very helpful. Thanks for considering us newbies.
A good way to really clean your tank and sides after you run the black tank flush if you have one. I put around 5 gallons of water in the tank and then put a 10-20 pound bag of ice down the toilet into the tank. Then drive to your next destination and when you get there all the side will be scrubbed clean. I was amazed at what all was stuck to the sides now it will be really cleaned. Hope this helps someone.
Another idea……when using the hose support, hook up hose, let it sag to ground, then place it on the hose support. This acts as a P-trap and prevents sewer gas from entering the RV. Remove the sag when you’re ready to dump.
That’s perfect! Glad you guys are taking things in your own time 🙂 RV life is always waiting for ya whenever you are ready! Feel free to reach out to us anytime we can be of help in answering questions Charles!! Thank you so much for these comments, keep them coming!!!
I found a few use Calgon in Pine-Sol I found out if you use Calgon in Pine-Sol on a 50/50 mix until gallon jug use a quarter cup at a time and each tank the fantastic job
Awww thank you both so much!!! We are so happy to hear it was good and helpful information 😊 you guys rock for all the continued support. Much love from the Hanks family ❤️ - Renee and Kyle
My initial comment was going to be "What a load of crap." But, my wife said you probably wouldn't get my humor and I might offend you. So...I'll just stick with, nice b-roll @8:45, great timing. #BingeHanks
We totally understand your humor Tanner 😂 With our background of ER nursing, nothing is off the table LOL Thank you so much friend, we really appreciate your support 😁👍🏼
Our plans are to order a travel trailer next year. Jan.- April. I appreciate all of your knowledge you guys share. "Burping" is something I have never heard of until now. Thanks for sharing. Reggie & Cheryl 👍

For those that store the hose in the bumper of their travel trailer, I found it promotes rust and eventually wears pin holes in the ribs of the hose. I purchased an expandable plastic hose sewer hose tube from CW and mounted it to the frame in front of the axles, so there is no way for it to drag. Not wanting to drill holes in my aluminum frame I purchased 36”/1”square aluminum tubing at Lowe’s and cut two 10 in lengths from it. I attached one to the frame on each side with 3m extreme hold tape, and attached the hose tube to them with stainless screws.
Thank you so much for your Super Thanks to the Hanks!!! We appreciate all your support and hope the video gave you great information 🤗 Take care and safe travels!!! ~Carl, Ney Ney, and Dexter
Hanks are really appreciating the thanks Peyton and Andrea 🙏 😊 so glad to hear it was good information for you guys. Thank you so much for the continued support as always. Much love from the Hanks Family - Kyle and Renee
When it comes to backing up your rig, regardless of size, practice before you take off on your first trip. Drive to an empty parking lots somewhere, school parking lot, mall, town park, and practice backing into a spot. Get used to how much space you need, how sharp you can turn etc. etc. It is also easier to back up when the trailer is turning toward the driver's side. That way the driver can see where the trailer is going. When the trailer is turning the other way the driver is blind to where the trailer is going and you could hit something. Just my two cents worth.
I am staying in an rv for the summer on my families property for the first time. Never had an rv before so zero experience. I am emptying the black tank into a 36 gallon tote tank. I can’t really leave it running to flush it out. I emptied it three times today and the water was still not clear. Have to disconnect and go over to the septic between flushes. Unsure how to really get it clean. Previously when I emptied it not everything came out so it is getting clogged also. I am using drop in rv black tank treatment tabs. After flushing today I had some water on the floor in the rv right in the area where the black tank flush is on the outside. Unsure if something broke or not. It’s pretty overwhelming honestly, idk what I’m doing but your video helped me understand it a little better.
Awesome thank you guys so much for watching!! We are so glad to hear that you guys enjoyed, much love and appreciation from the Hanks family ❤️- Renee and Kyle
Hey, Kyle and Renee! Another great video!! Very informative and actually fun to watch. 😁 Thanks for sharing all your tips with us! Stay safe out there! Christina and Rick
Hey guys! Thank you so much for all the support! We were trying to keep this as fun as possible with it being a how to video LOL. You guys are the best, stay safe ❤️😊- Kyle and Renee
I like to use a clear fitting connected to the camper then a gate value and the hose connected to the gate value so when using the black tank flush I can close the gate value and fill my tank with water then open the valve and let it drain.i also like to use a cutoff valve on my flush line so that I want have to cut the water off at the faucet every time between flushes
Thank you Stef!! We are so glad to hear it was informative and interesting 😊 we appreciate the continued support and love as always! Hope to come visit you guys soon in Minnesota when you are both settled in - Kyle and Renee
Thank you guys for all the great information I have been learning from your channel. I am working out of state from my Farm House and I will be starting up my videos again in a 27 footer Rv kitchen.
