This is my translation/interpretation of the Enheduanna poem "Lament to the Spirit of War." Among her other accomplishments, Enheduanna wrote the first anti-war poem! Truly a remarkable woman, one for the ages. Lament to the Spirit of War by Enheduanna loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch You hack down everything you see, War God! Rising on fearsome wings you rush to destroy the land, descending like a raging storm, howling like a hurricane, screaming like a tempest, thundering, raging, ranting, drumming, whiplashing whirlwinds! Men falter at your approaching footsteps. Tortured dirges scream on your lyre of despair. Like a fiery Salamander you poison the land: growling over the earth like thunder, vegetation collapsing before you, blood gushing down mountainsides. Spirit of hatred, greed and vengeance! Dominatrix of heaven and earth! Your ferocious fire consumes our land. Whipping your stallion with furious commands, you decide our fates. You triumph over all human rites and prayers. Who can explain your tirade, why you carry on so?

I am fascinated by early history. Being the first of the narrative poems is very interesting. Eh Heduana is an important figure in religion, poetry, and theology who created an image of the Feminine that is powerful yet very different to ours. In many ways I feel her vision of the Feminine is superior to ours.

Ive been studying the sumerian& all ancient texts for over a decade and have found this and 90% of myths are a type of allegory. Often there are historically accurate events of the times mixed with cataclysms that destroyed various parts of the world at 1 time or separate times as they are reoccurring, the allegories are to teach & remember the principle or basic idea is to store food for 7 years in several, like the bible 7 years of plenty & 7 of famine (like in the epic of gilgamesh ishtar asks for the bull of Heaven) same idea behind the Egyptians book of the heavenly cow. The kolbrin calls it a dragon, the sumerians also refer to it as the 8 pointed star, while india calls that the multi arms of Shiva/Kali. In each culture they have several stories with different characters, all explaining the same event in different aspects of seeing it from beginning to end.
