What do you get when you combine a massive character roster, memorable lounge music, and gameplay inspired by an ADHD riddled crack head having a manic episode? That's right - Marvel vs Capcom 2!
There have been many ports of this game released over the years for various systems, and to celebrate the newly-released Marvel vs Capcom Collection, I wanted to play all of these ports and see what makes them good (or bad)!
MUSIC:
Hiten - Tekken 5
Shotguns - Hajime no Ippo: Victorious Boxers
Yuri Theme - The King of Fighters XI
Dawn - The House of the Dead 2
Shiny World - OutRun2
Soft Collision - Mighty Switch Force 2
Race Menu - Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec

The PS2 and Xbox versions of MVC2 were developed in a very short period of time because Capcom's contract with Marvel was expiring, it led to those ports being rushed (with Xbox Live support for the Xbox port being cut despite the fact that it was advertised in magazines) and were sold in limited quantities, leading to them being rare and expensive to buy on second hand market.

I bought the ps2 version back in 2018, it cost me like 80$ at the time. I'd say it was worth it just being casual and playing with friends with my triple Charlie double anti-air assist lol 🤣

Maximilian basically debunked this "balancing" myth. Most changes are more the result of the porting process and not so much the result of the devs attempting to "balance the game". Every glitch change in the ps3/360 port are literally confirmed by the devs (to max) that the glitches just disappeared upon porting the code. They did zero touches to the gameplay
@NewGabeOrder
@NewGabeOrder 3 дня назад
3:26 The Dreamcast version plays a little quicker than the arcade version, but other than that, it has no balance changes or glitch fixes from the arcade version. In the music department, you'll notice the arcade version has some music tracks that sound differently from all the other versions. The Character Select screen, both Ranking themes, Continue music, Game Over fanfare, and some stages like the Clock Tower get affected.

In terms of audio, the arcade/NAOMI version of some other titles from Capcom also have similar issues of sound effects and BGM not being looped or improperly mixed channels. Specifically, arcade versions of the first Capcom vs. SNK, Power Stone 2 and Project Justice also have these same problems. I think the reason for this is that Capcom probably rushed the NAOMI version out to time crunch near-simultaneous releases for both arcade (2/2000) and Dreamcast (3/2000) in Japan.

@ArcadeStriker

Another thing to be noticed if you play both versions back to back is the audio quality for voice clips being lower in the DC port for some reason. Easy to tell with Hayato and Ruby Heart sounding pretty compressed compared to the Arcade version.

Something to note about the PS2/Xbox versions is the updated Marvel logo in the title screen. It's different than the Arcade/DC title screen. In my opinion, it clashes with the original logo as a stylized fighter, and more like a Branded Product, which is where Marvel games were headed at the time.

Theres definitely slowdown on the PS2 when there's too much going on onscreen and not just slowdown, but some insane screen tearing that makes the game looks even worse than it already does with its lack of anti-aliasing. The reason for the game's low quality audio and heavy compression is due to Capcom deciding to press the game on a standard Compact disc as opposed to DVD-Rom. And yes, while the Dreamcast version does run at 480i by default, it also natively supports a 31Khz hi-res progressive scan image (just like its NAOMI counterpart) with the use of a Dreamcast VGA Cable, and it looks absolutely stunning with the right display screen.

Respect for disclosing some versions shown were emulation, I hate when RU-vidrs make a video saying “game on so and so console”, only to realize halfway through it’s on emulator but they didn’t say it Also had no clue the Japanese version of Dreamcast port had to get both online and Arcade points, which is a cool Japanese only feature (they always got the coolest stuff we didn’t as Americans), the arcades over there were still very big. I traveled and lived in Japan summer of 2003 as a high school foreign exchange student and the Tokyo arcades were still always packed with people due to fighting games and their culture. Hello Kitty was also starting to get big too lol. But yeah I wish we had the VMU Arcade point thing if there was a backup way to get points at home and trade them in for like Arcade points at a lower rate

Still an incredible game no matter what system you play it on. But I recommend the recent collection because it's on all modern consoles (Xbox version comes out 2025), you get the previous Capcom-developed Marvel fighters and crossovers and The Punisher as a bonus. Also because it's convenient and more affordable ($50 is a steal when compared trying to get Sega Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1/2 and Original Xbox copies) as well as being crystal clear HD.

2:45 this is mainly why JP mvc2 is cheaper than US mvc2. Unless you know how to hack your vmu, there's no way to unlock all characters. If you unlock characters with d points (btw, you can sit in training mode to max out those points), the game will only give you that option for half of the cast. The other half will need those other points to unlock. Great video.
@chazmaru9583
@chazmaru9583 3 дня назад
FYI you don’t even need to hack your VMU, there are save files featured on a officially released GD-ROM (from the Japanese Dreamcast Magazine) that allows unlocking everything. You just need an original copy or an image of that GD-ROM.

I own the DC, Japenese Ps2, Og xbox, and Ps3 hd versions. I for one love unlocking all the charecters in the DC ports. It gave me incentives to keep playing it w/ my friends. The Ps3 and xbox 360 ports were so broken thou as you could select the same charecter for your whole team which having 3 Cables was just overkill lol.

I think the reason why the xbox version feels so much slower and it also looks slower is because the xbox version either doesn't have a Turbo mode (which is just frame skipping) or if it does have a turbo mode its frame pacing isn't done correctly which means that it will feel laggy since between frames the inputs are being dropped. from the looks of it, it seems to be the former but i dont know if there are any speed settings within the options menu to enable turbo mode. Turbo mode is what people play on competitively and for capcom games from the era it was achieved through frame skipping so frames would be skipped in order to make the game appear and feel faster but at the cost of inputs being dropped between those frames and the buffer for everything being much tighter. as far as i know when turbo modes are enabled both in SF2 and MvC2 its consistent enough that the drawbacks from frame skipping ultimately become null and void because its the standard mode that EVERYONE plays on. but thats just my theory on what i think is happening with the Xbox port

12:33 Another presentation-related object affected by widescreen upgrade: If you start the match with Jin or use his supers, the Blodia sprites' cut-off points are also visible due to them only being designed for 4:3 edges. An example from one of Dood's old online play videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VF-OgV-ZoxY.html

2:48 N-points are used for arcade connectivity (Dreamcast only), while V-points are used for winning online battles (absent from all of the Xbox releases, affecting Japan). So my difficulties for character unlocking in the Japanese version of MVC2 are: Xbox (Easy) PS2 (Medium, can't play online today due to Capcom Matching Service servers shutting down in 2004) Dreamcast (Hard, cabinets with VMU slots can be hard to come by, and online servers were terminated in 2004) I was lucky to buy a Japanese Xbox copy since the ISO dump online prior to my purchase was bad and can't be converted to an XISO.

1:29 Even so, the starting rosters and ending pictures differ between the arcade and home versions. In the case of the home versions, some of the starting "arcade" characters cannot be accessed until a net total of a 9999+ D-points (P-points on PS2) gets accumulated.

There’s something interesting I’ve heard about the XBOX version but I wasn’t sure it was true. I have seen sources online stating that the XBOX version of MVC2 supports custom soundtracks (the XBOX had a feature where you could copy music off of a CD onto your XBOX harddrive and then you could play that ripped music in compatible games). However, this was not advertised as a feature on the back of the box so I’m not sure if the feature is even in the game.

I have the PlayStation 2 version. Playing it for years and compared to what the negatives are stated; other than the short slowdown when the final boss Abyss changed forms THERE WERE NO ISSUES AT ALL. Some old combos don't work - possibly a bug and exploit that were fixed/removed from AC/DC. Colors are way off - None. Just DC fanboy rage when they know their DC console is dying (it did). Sounds are off - It isn't. Sounds are perfect. Game crash in odd situations - There wasn't any. Terrible framerate and slowdown issues - other than the short slowdown when the final boss Abyss changed forms there was no slowdown Lack safe counters - no idea what's that but no other issues. Those negative rants was because PlayStation 2 finally has the game. The DC DIED in 2001 compared to the PS2 while it died in 2013 (WW, 2012 in Japan). As you stated your tests for the PS2 version was done on an emulator. Mine is on a PS2! From Best to Worst (I correct for you) - DC - PS3/Xbox - PS2 - Xbox - iOS

Lacks safe counters meant that if you had low life and countered in another character (b, dB,d) the original character can die. E.g low life cable blocks hailstorm counters in next character, cable dies. Yes the character who countered out and isn't on screen took damage and died. Never happens on DC.
