This is incorrect I think. The first example - the software engineer - is not final expenditure, it's an intermediate good. To count it would lead to double counting, as the $100,000 will be spent on consumption later. Generally, "investment" tends to be limited in definition to "building and construction" and "machinery and equipment".

Please check that engineer part again... As that is a variable cost to the company.... But investment considered here is on the fixed costs...

It should be personal consumption

thank u very much, sir. You are so helpful, I appreciate this a lot. My school teacher’s been teaching this for almost 2 months, and I had never been able to clearly differentiate all the components of GDP, but this 5 mns video just taught me everything clearly and perfectly. The examples were make the explanation even more clearer and comprehensive. I wish i had access to this sooner. ❤️

Why when "my mother" sells her house it doesn't count for GDP, because it's just changing hands, but when I buy a new house it counts? Isn't it the same situation? Thank you.

a new house means a brand new building, it hasn't been lived and just entered the housing market circulation like a brand new condo. Your mother selling her house (which she already lived in) means it is already used up and thus wouldn't be counted in GDP. It will be counted in GDP from the beginning when the house is newly built and the first person lives in it and not when it changes hands.
@TobyUnravels
@TobyUnravels 4 года назад
No it isn't. A new house is "constructed" then sold. There is value made there. But when "my mother" sells "her" house that is already made, no value was made there. just a transfer of title.

Your mother sold a house that has already been accounted for in the GDP ,when it was bought/built. If it is again counted while exchanging hands ,it leads to double counting.

why is house sold in new orleans not considered as net export if it is a foreigner purchase ?
@25987489

It's not a new house! It just switches ownership, and therefore it doesn't impact GDP

Khan I have a question on importing the $200 japanese lawnmower. You bought it for $200 and substracted $200 worth of import, but that might not be accurate because, let's say it was imported for $150 and sold for $200, so the value added would be $50, which might contribute to GPD, right? You don't import something to sell it at the same price, you actually add value to it such as brand representation, support, management, etc.

If it's bought from a retailer in US, then the import maybe $150. But if bought directly from Japan then it would be $200.

Would the firm not pay less for the import so they can make a profit on the plane and lawnmower? Shouldn't it contribute slightly as the company would make a profit?

I'm not sure if this video is correct. If buying a Japanese lawnmower would net net have no impact on GDP, then why is that we say an increase in imports cause a shift to the left of AD?

I thought the selling of the house down in NOLA would be consumption because the Swede is consuming the house.
