Excalibur Crossbow - Crossbow Cross Examination video

We tested five popular compound crossbows against the Excalibur Matrix. With more and more crossbows appearing on the market and with existing crossbow manufacturers introducing new models every year, it's becoming increasingly difficult to make an informed decision. So, we decided to do the work for you. We secured an engineer and crossbow specialist to design and conduct a series of performance test that we call the Crossbow Cross Examination. Watch the results of our testing, they may surprise you!

The crossbow went together quickly and the general fit and finish is a bit above what I expected for the price. ru-vid.comUgkx5B43Qabqt1HedUJyfEqxiwBCfaooIH52 The adjustable stock is a little loose. I had an issue when I tried to cock the bow for the first time with the safety on. The string set in the trap box, held just enough to build up enough tension to rip the string out of my hands when it let go. No significant damage was done, and once I got it sighted in, I wrecked a couple bolts by sending one straight down the shaft of the first. I'm holding ~2" groups at around 50 yards, and I'm not an expert by any means. Best part is that they supply all the replacements parts you may ever need

I'm a recurve archer. I own a compound, but choose recurve every time. I've seen 3 compound archers dry fire their bows in competition. So when I was looking at crossbows it was a natural choice to go with a recurve. This video, along with a couple of others convinced me to get an Excalibur Matrix. Love it!

You guys sold me. Bought a Micro 380 for my son and a Assassin Extreme 400 for myself. The dirst simple no cams and a single string bomb proof design and able to change a string in tge field in minutes or limbs at home without a bow press sold me Excalibur Crossbows got well over $2k of this Yankee's money

I have the 380 and 405 Matrix for about 2 years. Have taken my share of game with them. They are extremely accurate up to 50-60 yards for me. The bolts are expensive, so zero in at 20 yrs like the instructions say. I like that there is no recoil, and no need for ear protection, compared to my rifles. I've never had a string break yet, but if it does, very easy to restring.

After a long time of research and after many sleepless nights with lots of thoughts, I ordered an Excalibur Wolverine today. Also because the offer as a set was cheaper than usual.I admit that I am fascinated by an ultra-fast compound crossbow and the visible mechanics are also a big attraction for me. But the Excalibur is built so simply and reliably, which ultimately convinced me more. I can easily do the service myself. I'm really looking forward to the Wolverine.

I bought the Excalibur micro and shot 3 bolts inside a 1.5inch out of the box at 30yards. wow! can't wait to move it out to 40 & 50 yards to see what it will do.

I have a Bulldog 440 that I just bought a few weeks ago and I love it. It’s simple to use and it allows me to change my strings by myself so I don’t have to make a trip to BPS’s for them to order me a string/cables which could take a month or more. With Excalibur and the Charger ext I was able to change the strings no problems. Just make sure you buy an extra string and a stringing tool.

My two month old Excalibur Micro Suppressor's right limb just blew up. Take a look at the various threads online, and you'll see that Excalibur has some serious issues with the limbs. I bought into their savvy marketing, but found that these aren't as care free as they'd like you to believe. Their warranty department is prompt, but this doesn't make up for the down time and the lack of trust I now have in the product.
@chrisruzsa2798
@chrisruzsa2798 10 месяцев назад
Its not really the limbs as much as it is marketing for speed. Excalibur always came with options 350 base minimum for speeds and speed advertising and proper weight which is 2219s with 150 grain heads. And your choice os in between these. Lighter the bolts less shots you can take heavier well naturally the more you can use it.

I have owned two high end Xbows and now go with EXcals my other crossbows both failed at under 500 shots a multitude of times. One rebuild didn't make it past 100 shots downrange. As a machine engineer I know that parts very all over the place on most machined products and I attribute this as the major cause of break downs. I did receive over 1000 shots from one compound that I had remachined to my specs holding a +/_ tol. of 0.0005 on all bearing surfaces and holes in other words it was machine perfect. The short of it is I am selling both my compound Xbows and have started buying nothing but EXcals.

Patented TenPoint ACU draw cranking and retracting !!!! simply the BEST people TenPoint has them all beat. Now if the others had something like this cranking device I would of-course look at it but none do as of this post, I take my TenPoint up to the club on the shooting range when I can and shoot it all day, I throw my target out and use the rangefinder at different distances for me the cranking system is the way to go!

After watching the shoot to failure test I see one problem with that test, with a compound the power is at the end of the stroke yet on a recurve the power is on the beginning of the stroke at full draw. The recurve limb at the length of their release of the string on the machine will have a much reduced poundage on a recurve compared to a compound. Speeds- I believe Excalibur uses shorter lighter arrows. Although I used compound crossbows for 30 years with very few issues I have been looking at an Excalibur for the last couple of years.
@molonlabe1033

I feel like some important info was left out in the testing . They mentioned that while testing they changed the bowstring a couple times . First question at what number shot did you change the string and why ? Second question is why werent the other bows strings and cables watched as closesly and given the same treatment.
@TheKevinwildman

To some people on here yes they have the ten point and few other top brands, plus ive done the same test with friends I was using the 310 mine last longer than all the crossbows top models even on our hunts my buddies spent 200 + dollars to get them fix, I'm the only one that's eating deer again this year.

You can see in the video that the other bows "failed" due to a broken string. The other damage was probably caused by the string breaking. If the other bows didn't get the "periodic string replacements" then this "cross examination" is absolute bullshit. I shoot an Excalibur but this test isn't a fair comparison by any stretch of the imagination.
@crominion6045
@crominion6045 5 лет назад
By "periodic string replacements," I take it to mean they fired the Excaliburs until the strings broke, then replaced the strings and continued testing. The compound bows were damaged when their original strings broke and could not be tested further.

I wished they compared using modern compounds to the excalibur. I have no dog in this fight. I have a matrix 405 and LOVE IT! I also have a scorpyd slp 165 and love that too! My scorpyd SLP165 is on the larger heavier side and hope to upgrade to an Orion or possible see what comes out at the ATA show in the next few weeks. I also feel this test needs to be done independently from any manufacturer to give an honest report. I do love the simplistic nature of my Matrix 405 and it's just dang fun bow to shoot. I also feel my scorpyd it top notch bow and will shoot with anybow. There are lots of great crossbows out there for everyone to choose what is most important to them.

Its a horrible target to shoot in the head with a bow. If any archer did that intentional they have no morals or respect for the game. This is just my opinion. But way too much can go wrong and an arrow travels way to slow that makes hitting the exact spot highly unlikely with how fast a deer can move that head. Best thing to do is just put the arrow in the engin room and it will expire quickly. Best most humain thing to do. We as hunter must respect our quarry whatever it maybe to dispatch it as quickly as possible.

RECURVE PROS: LIGHTER TO CARRY THAN THE COMPETITION. SHOOTS ABOUT AS FAST OR FASTER. FEWER PARTS TO BREAK.... PROBABLY LONGER BOW LIFE. PROBABLY LESS MAINTAINANCE COST. RECURVE CON: DRAW OR PULL WEIGHT IS MUCH HEAVIER THAN EQUALLY FAST SHOOTING COMPOUND BOW. THIS MAY REQUIRE EXTRA EFFORT OR A COCKING DEVICE.

@purpledc1
@purpledc1 8 лет назад
So I cant say this test has much merit. I will agree Excalibur makes an amazing product. But the durability test? Just because you don't dry fire at full draw doesn't mean its not a dry fire. What that test seems to simulate is repeated partial dry fire abuse which any and every compound bow will eventually succumb to. You cant simulate firing an arrow without actually having that string pushing on something. Pulling the string back 7" doesn't simulate the firing of an arrow at full draw. It simulates a partial dry fire which is abuse and duh, the bow breaks. I will fully admit an Excalibur is the best crossbow in those tests if durability is desired. But was the test fair? Not to my eye. I also think its rather poor they don't say what bows they are using in the tests. And no close ups of the actual important views. IMHO its a nice infomercial. But like most infomercials there is much you don't get to see.
@mrgoldendeel
@mrgoldendeel 5 лет назад
Even by that standard, they were then all dry fired and still the Excalibur held up better to the abuse than the others. Speaks volumes about durability. As far as mentioning the names of other bows, they really don't need to. In a sense, they're basically calling out all cammed crossbow manufacturers. They don't need to go the route of the political smear campaigns you see during elections because they know their product is superior!
@letsgobrandon8375

And there dry firing in the power stroke there a huge difference in dry firing a recurve and a compound bow. When i was new to archery i dry fired my compound and my recurve. My recurve survived. Not my Mathews compound.

Plus people these days want compounds due to faster speed, vs lower speeds plus I never seen a Barnett recurve out in stores here in Canada or the Ten Point GT Flex up here this is a Canadian Test. Excalibur are now smaller then compounds and way lighter, yes they should add more crossbows to the test but they did the top selling compounds on market. I see ( Barnett, Ten Point, Wicked Ridge, Scorpion ) sorry for the miss spelling. But it's up too you what you want I rather have simple then a waste of money. Don't say they use different grains either I used 350 grain too 450 grain arrow that doesn't make a difference, it still last longer than compounds, Even when I drop it 20 times at 20 ft high of the ground it still works nothing broke. Can your do that????? Then prove it do your own test and post it

As for crossbows, I will be hunting with one this season- it will be an Exclibur- since I already hunt with a simple recurve bow! Stands to reason that will fewer moving parts there is less to go wrong, its the same with the airplanes and helicopters I fly- helicopters require a lot of daily maintenance and cost a lot more per hour to operate than an airplane!

And could the guy whit the compound case overlplay a bit more of how heavy it is. but still I whould buy a Excalibur, or from the chinese company that makes them...I found a stockdealer that sells the exact crossbows as excalubur, for a 1/5 of the price or less depending on how many you get, but I think 10 was the least, and if that is the case its the same just a new logo, its easy to se how they can have a life time waranty, the few% thad fail, just give the costomer a new, they do profit anyway.

after watching this video I have to say to the expert that your either well paid by Excalibur or intentionally blind dry firing a crossbow should never be simulated and- used as test result I mean firstly how do you replicate the harmonic signature that the crossbow would receive during normal use i.e. "the wrong harmonic signature can bring bridges down let alone snap the limbs of a crossbow" I would not let this team of testers wax the string on my crossbow plus your talking about a crossbow that in the UK cost nearly £1000. I Wonder if the other Crossbow in the test were all so the top of the tree, of the other manufacturers?

Overall wise, dimensions, performance, quality of engineering, Darton Archery xbows are the best. Excalibur uses too low arrow weight compared to others, so the fps rating they report are not comparable. With 400-420grs bolts thes fps would be much less. They are durable, but the prod width is long, and they are louder. Look for Darton Viper SS Xtreme.

I take it all the other crossbows were compounds then? Hardly any sort of comparison unless you shoot like for like, i.e. recurve vs another similar spec recurve.
