This is my video review of the Arendal 1723 THX Monitor HiFi & Home Theater Speakers and as part of the review I will be comparing them to the JBL 4390 Dynaudio EVOKE 20 and Sonus faber Sonetto II as part of a speaker group test comparing 8 stand mount HiFi speakers priced to £2000.
The Arendal 1723 are a 2 way loudspeaker featuring dual 8 inch mid bass drivers and a 28mm soft dome tweeter in a waveguide and its a very large stand mount speaker.

i have been waiting so hard for this review, i was only teased with the name and no the model, and now here it is. i am from norway and recently purchased one of their models, same type of speaker as reviewed but the newest and smallest version. the built quality and looks are great at the price point, and the use of HDF wood is something special. the sound is great and stands out i think. a bit edgy top end for a month or so, but really nice after that. i use them nearfuld and they sure brings the dynamic's to another level.

@@stevehoang5289what you think now? I feel like they’re similar in design to perlistens but for 1/6th the price (or a third of their R series..). I have always thought 2 way or even 2.5 way speakers couldn’t compete with similar quality 3 ways but it looks like I could be incorrect..

@Damon , I bought 4 height speakers from Arendal and regretted from buying those. Big mistake. I paid 3.2K for those height speakers. It's not that the Arendal speakers are no good, but the thing is for those height speakers, all they do were producing ambient sounds, and I should not spend that much money for height or atmos speakers. If I have to do it again, I will buy either Klipsch or SVS for half the price. BTW, I bought 3 JTR RT212 for my LCR channel and I have no regret doing that. So, don't spend too much money on height or atmos speakers, save that money on your front LCR speakers instead. Those JTR front speakers will be my endgame speakers.

@@stevehoang5289 well I think I’d go with the 1961 set for 1600 instead of svs for 1200… and with more and more atmos tracks on streaming I think it would be worth while. For just movies ya. Not worth it. But for a constant signal? I think there’s a point to it. I just got some cheap Polk owm3s and they sound surprisingly good for 180 a pair: we’re 100 a pair a few years back but those days are gone..

While I don't think I have a listening space big enough to accommodate these big boys, it's nice to know if that changed I might be able to consider these for music listening as well as home theater. I look forward to your sound demo comparison, but one thing it won't reveal is how they sound as you move around your lisrening area and out of the sweet spot, wich sounds like it may be smaller and more critical than with other designs.

Terry, I have a set of Dynaudio Contour 20s …and I have been carefully listening & experimenting lately and my perception is that the bass is tighter AND faster with the plugs in the port holes 🕳 🕳 . Thanks for confirming my findings in this review, as you mention the same with these speakers. …so…maybe plugs-in and adding two Rel T/5x subwoofers will give me better cleaner, tighter "extended" bass…hmmm…🤔
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem 2 года назад
Be careful with that bob - Arendal say the 1723 are designed to be sealed speaker first and then vented second. I dont know if every manufacturer thinks like this, I doubt they do. Bunging the ports will likely roll the bass off a lot steeper so it might be reducing some bass ringing your getting at a certain frequencies causing the bass to sound slow because its lingering in the room. This is where measuring really helps to work out what is what - I could be wrong on both accounts - but naturally do what sounds best
@bobb.9917
@bobb.9917 2 года назад
@@PursuitPerfectSystem I have a LOT of power driving The Contours…so I still seem to have a LOT of bass with the plugs in…and it’s definitely tighter and faster….but I will heed your caution and keep listening before doing anything rash! 😯, (can you fly across the pond and take some measurements for me! 😬).

@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem 2 года назад
Not sure about the distance from the wall, maybe ask them about that - remember for stereo we are always more fussy, multi channel less fussy and high frequency lift can be a good way to balance a lot of HC bass so it might be there on purpose. But again the benefit of Dirac is the same for all - if its an issue manage it

I drive my speakers with an Xmc 2 emotiva processor which has dirac live and the Xpa 7 200 watts to 8 ohms by 7 channel and 390 watts to 4 ohms by 2 channels I’m not sure what the 4 ohm rating would be to 7 channels. I’m considering going to Arendal for two towers, center channel, and two monitors in the 1723 thx 8” versions. I know from watching audioholics they are technically closer to a 6 ohm speaker even though Arendal calls them 4 ohms. How much in volume and sound quality do you think I will gain?

I’ve got 2 pairs of paradigm studio 100s v3 and a pair of v4s too and a 570c (wish I had a 690)… These would be a no brainer “upgrade” for my taste. I thought they were 2499 each for these and 3699 for the towers but that’s a pair. These are the just as beautiful and well constructed younger siblings to Perlisten imo.. while the later are the super car of the two. But for 10k you can get 8 monitors for the same price of one of their S7t towers. Could do a an exclusive Arendal 7.2.4 setup with power, processing, and some room to spare compared to a pair of theirs. I could go on with the comparisons… haha.. I’d assume this new company meets a short short list for so many looking in this range. Even the 5k a set range. I’d have to test but I’d imagine a pair of 1723 towers would trade blows with the new paradigm mid/high range towers.. think they’re just over 5k a pair for the 100s.. wish I had the hook ups for testing. Thanks for the vid 🍻

Hi Terry, you have reviewed the Wharfedale Elysian as well. I have the Wharfedale Elysian 2 and like to know if the Arendal 1723 come anywhere close in SQ to the Elysians? I also have the Elysian Center and some Wharfedale Evo 4S as rears. But Wharfedale has no ceiling/height speakers and no subwoofer in the Elysian series. So I am wondering if the Arendal 1723 series can match or come close to the Elysians. I also use my speakers for stereo music listening (with a REL S/510 and Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista amp, which both I believe you know as well). Would appreciate your reaction/opinion.

You know what this came up when I was with Wharfedale recently, I have not reviewed the Elysian and I have never even listened to them. Peter C the main man designer has told me how wonderful they are but its pure speculation for me at the mo. I dont know about how the Arendal but knowing how Peter designs speakers they will likely more musical sounding compared to Arendal which are chasing more traditional flat freq response neutrality. For heights you can use any speakers with any if you know how to set systems up well, especially if you have something like Dirac. For subwoofers the same - they dont need to match, buy the best performance subs you can for your money and set them up well.

5:45 Did you tilt them the 2,5° backwards? If not it could be the reason for the spiky timing. Because of the tweeter-horn the base of sound (literally the voicecoil) could be not in line so the upper chassis have to be set a little backwards (literally tilting the box). This is often the case when a mid or mid-base speaker is placed over the tweeter.

@@PursuitPerfectSystem Terry, thank you for being so generous to your fans. I started my search 18 months ago thinking all along that I would buy our Canadian brand Paradigm Prestige Series towers. And team them up with a Yamaha A-S2200. Did not care for the Prestige sound. Then my dealer thru at me comparable B&W 700 series and Monitor Audio silver. Neither to my liking. Last effort he had me listen to Focal Aria towers. I liked them. Now I'm in a different direction. So I stepped up looking at French and Italian brands. So far Triangle Signature Delta are my favourite. I have 2 more that I want to listen to. Sonus Faber Sonetto 5 & 8. Plus one more shot at paradigm new Founder Series 80 & 100. Do the Arendal 1723s sound lean towards the Italian and French brands or more towards B&W and the others I mentioned. As well my dealer is touting the Rotel RA-1592 mkii integrated as a versatile alternative to the Yamaha A-S2200. What are your thoughts on that? I'm confident just on pure sound reproduction that the Yamaha would be far superior. I'm not concerned about price. I'm good up to 10k for 2 towers and 5k for the integrated amp. @@dan_hitchman007I know klipsch are bright I had them before the Svs Ultras. Svs are known to be on the warm side from everything I heard before buying them. After owning them I would definitely agree that they are a warm speaker and withheld in the treble range most of the time. I now have JTR 212HTR monitors for LCR with 110’s for surrounds and 2 2400 Captivators for subs. After this move I haven’t looked for different home theater speakers since. I’ve never heard more realistic full bodied sound that never has me ask if their warm or bright. Their perfect. They are not pretty gloss speaker but have kind of a muscle car larger than life aesthetic that lets you know there isn’t any speaker out there that could overtake their greatness. With the move to the JTRs I finally looked for the biggest baddest center channel and then built around that. In my opinion, the center channels, dialogue, output, and clarity along with your subwoofers ability to supply bass more powerful than you would ever use are the main reason for wanting to try different speakers. This center channel makes you feel as if the actor is in the room and never has you leaning forward to hear what they said without ever maxing out the speaker’s abilities. These speakers kill any speaker that I’ve ever heard in all of those departments. I know I sound like I’m gloating but if you really want to be happy, I would give them a try. At that point all things will be right with the world.🤣

After demoing the ATC SCM 11 last month (blew my DM601's out of the water but the lack of an effective dust cover was the deal breaker) I'm looking at alternatives. The Dynaudio Evoke 10/20 are very much on my radar and after looking up the dimensions I've just realised the Arendal's will be too big or my setup - 40 cm deep! @markphilpot8734 2 года назад
This speaker reminds me of my own ProAc EBTs. The driver arrangement is nearly the same, but the ProAc EBTs have smaller drivers and utilize a single port. The smaller drivers make them faster responding, but the 1723s will dig deeper. A speaker needs a sturdy and dampened stand to address your ear at tweeter height and disappear acoustically. These have heft so the top plate of your stand should address around 60% of your speaker’s footprint to give it a stable base. A countersunk trio of holes filled with chromed ball bearings will be provide both a stable platform and do an excellent job of removing the excess energy off the speaker so the listener can benefit from the lack of smear caused by this excess energy not being addressed. Most stands are not substantial and this speaker will not tolerate a weak stand. These speakers deserve the best stand you can get. Certainly don’t want an unstable stand with nearly $3K speaker pair sitting on top of them. Each must choose their own gear, but a poor stand makes a great speaker sound like crap. If the stand is untreated, the speaker sounds like garbage. Time spent treating everything makes it sound it’s best. The stands and their treatment makes your experience a positive one. Stay safe mates!😊👍🏻😷
@Cujobob
@Cujobob Год назад
Larger drivers don’t automatically mean faster as a larger woofer doesn’t have to move nearly as much as a smaller woofer. Requiring woofers to play higher frequencies is usually what separates speakers. It’s usually preferred to cross over the tweeter as low as possible for the best directivity and sound quality.
@markphilpot8734
@markphilpot8734 Год назад
@@Cujobob, I’m afraid you misunderstand. The ProAc EBT is a mini monitor with 3/4” silk dome tweeter and two 4” mid woofers. It’s by no means a large speaker. Rather heavy for as small as it is. It is best crossed over to a subwoofer below 88 hz to open the sound up. It is down hard below 70 hz. When they are freed of low frequencies, they open up as do most speakers with such small drivers as used here. Less mass equals faster. That is just physics and math.
@Cujobob
@Cujobob Год назад
@@markphilpot8734 the crossover frequency is 1500 hz on these Arendal speakers, so the woofers aren’t tasked with playing particularly high. A lighter weight cone still can’t compete with an upper frequency driver that plays so low. Generally speaking, I prefer my upper frequency driver to play as close to or below 1000Khz as possible. What is the crossover frequency of those EBTs? I’m not able to Google it.
