Just ordered these directly from Hifiman on an open box deal for $450 (wired version). Excited to get them and try em out both wired and via BT with the blue mini I already have from Deva Pro!

I got the r7dx for $99 with the coupon code and they were terrible until I bent the headband like you said (now they are very nice). Going to give those to my brother and thinking of upgrading to either this or the Dan Clark aeon closed

There's a $5400 planar closed back of the same design but with wooden cups the HE-R10P - and yes this whole line is about referring to the Sony MDR-R10

Closed backs are getting better then, that's certainly welcome. Maybe eventually we can get some sub $300 closed backs that are truly worth considering (other than the robin?)

Translating what I heard here; Basically Super base bloat headphones with decent stage and detail for the price and substandard build.

I’ve played around with my hands (I know I know lol) covering the backs of my LCD2Cs, and you can kind of shape your hands like the cups of the R9’s, and that’s when they sound the best when covering them 🤷🏼‍♂️

These headphones are legit good. Wearing them right now. Soundstage + imaging + bass.

I just ordered them a few hours ago. I don't care about looks when it comes to technical equipment as long as it works. I saw those a few months ago and since then wanted to know how they sound having that much space behind the driver. No matter what kind of driver is installed. You are the first one saying it's a wooden sound. I.need.to.test.them. I even kind of like how they look xd

I bought these on the $369 sale. They sound incredible to me. I think I might like them MORE than my Meze Empyrean, Campfire Cascade, Focal Clears, Spirit Torino Radiante...I think I like them more than any other headphone I've heard. Obviously I must appreciate bass more than most audiophiles. They sound so 3-dimensional to me. So immersive. So beautiful. I LOVE THEM

That chonky headband looks better with these cups than any of its other implementations. I actually don't mind its looks. I do own some Stanton Dynaphase, so perhaps I'm immune to giant cup prejudice.

I'm a bit confused with these guys. Are you saying you can't use a dual 3.5mm to 4.4mm balanced cable with these? It only accepts the TRRS single cable balanced? Any thoughts why this limitation?

I tried these and I found them a bit disappointing. The build seemed plasticky and flimsy for the price and the isolation was poor. I could hear external noise almost like it was an open-back (which for me at least defeats the purpose of closed-back). I hope Hifiman will continue to make more closed backs because I liked the sound and I'd like to see what else they can come up with.

ok, so dumb question? How is that thing running single sided balanced when there is no connection from one driver to the other that I can see. Am I missing something?

Deva Pro has the same cable config, it's rather clever. ut I did have to make my own Francy cable setup

Z, I hope you'll recall the Fostex TH MKII as you reviewed a few years back. It is of course over and above all Japanse, as well as being finished in Urushi lacquer which is applied to the Japanese Cherry Birch housings, all of which a very elderly and extremely wise and experienced artisan does by hand, applying the lacquer layer by layer, with each layer the addition of an almost imperceptible amount of silver foils that end up being the magical touch after the 12 layers are finished, he patiently waits an entire day for each layer to fully cure. The end result is very similar to this color on the R9, at least to my eye and the comparison I've been able to do through looking at each model on my laptop screen. The R9 however, is quite different and there is one particular feature that stands out for me and makes me see the R9 as a female based solely on the following; the odd protrusion on the cups gives the appearance that it/she is a pregnant bitch, a half-sister to the MK2, the different parent's genes creating the discrepancy in the looks department. The pregnant bellies don't look normal either and this is alarming and has me worried that there is some really evil, hideous, perhaps alien or monstrous shit for a fetus in there. I'm not sure how you feel in regards to ******** but........ we neeeeed to make it happen regardless of if she is in one of those states that have backtracked via an imagined time machine to 50 years or so in the past and banned something that as we can see from this example is frankly in the best interest to the human race as a whole to continue especially to prevent whatever is inside of the R9.

I just got these this week. I am not interested in look or build quality but I am rather disappointed: they sound low resolution, modest detail and very moderate clarity. Shipping them back to Amazon with some regrets because the price and comfort was good.

I have hifiman sundara's and they sound amazingly awesome and excellent unbelievably.. these were newer and cost a tiny bit more.. when my sundaras broke the head band strap its uncomfortable i needed to buy new ones i thought i'd replace them with these R9. I hoped they'd be like a closed back sundara.. but no they sound like 50% worse than sundara. I can hold my hands over backs of sundara and it sounds pretty great and richer bass lows. So i thought that was what these are.. But no.. It might just be that i dont have a balanced amp but these sound like you have your head inside or adjacent to the hollow of a huge stage subwoofer wooden enclosure and the speakers are playing next to your head what it sounds like inside a giant wooden enclosure with a really amped mic sound. Its probably that my amp isnt balanced and only an Xduoo xd05plus.. if i got the hifiman EF400 it might be sounding wayyy better and brighter i'd guess. These sound like boomy video game lows and bass might distort or clip? but im guessing it'd probably sound much better if i bought that bluemini thingy but it cost as much as the headphones themselves extra? So on the plus side if you hadnt bought like a gold plated OCC cable about 30$USD to replace your sundara or these R9's stock cable.. the stock cable with the R9's is actually quite great with them and the sundara. It gets a very life like natural sound out of both in sound profile especially with sundara's but it sounds less low latency and a bit less treble and clarity than the replacement upgrade gold plated OCC 16core cable i purchased separately but for a stock cable its awesome. Though im certain all hifiman products like my hifiman sundara need like what the bluemini outputs 4.4v amps or something of power to drive them or 5 -10v/amps or whatever. You probably need the best topping grade A amp with 5V or the proper hifiman ones or some sort of mini speaker amp to drive almost all hifiman gear so their cables and stuff are rated for those sorts of power levels. As i've never had anything better than my xduoo xd05 plus and im certain the bluemini R2R 's 4.4volts is made to sound less good than a proper hifiman amp with higher voltage or wattage whatever it was output.. well you get the idea. these headphones might be super secret awesome paired with the right amp.. or maybe im using them wrong? bluemini seems to go to one headphone port..i been using both left and right with like a Y shaped cable comes with it. I .. also dont own a balanced headphone amp. so my complaints might not be valid at all. But first impressions of what i can hear and see.. i'd choose sundaras instead. i've a config.ini file in my PC with hardwareextremelyultimatefullvolumetruefullaudionext and hardwaretruefullsoundgeneration hardwaretruefullsoundsynthesis ? soundboost and soundamplification both at 10+ directaudiokernel2 usbaudio2 ? and other settings or whatever lowlatency-AA and things in my config file when testing.. ooh maybe levels and bass and strongdynamicrangecompression and other things in there too when testing. So who knows if my listening experience is what you are supposed to hear with them.. ? works great with sundaras though. Also, the APTX HD audio seems like it wont auto select for the bluemini. I received the bluemini with a DEVAPRO for $160usd open box maybe from hifiman official store other day it seems my LG V60 developer options not let it switch to LDAC or APTX HD if can select it not greyed out then it has like no audio quality or lower or no change. It may require specific content file formats to work or something dumb? But selecting previously selectable optional codecs from LG or selecting system defaults arent an option it always tries to default to lousy awful disgusting AAC or SBC even with HD audio toggled. But most importantly the DEVA PRO and the R9's come with a good audio cable but the larger gold jack on the end thats removable is SUPER LOUSY. I have no clue why it looks almost identical to the others i have which mostly sound great but some sound super lousy theres often a subtle colour difference hard to spot but thats maybe just new vs much much older? are people stealing these and swapping with fakes?

Would have never bought these for 600 - but on sale now for $369 I'm giving them a shot. Honestly based on what others are saying, I think that's probably still too much.I fear that once I get them I'm going to say, pretty good, but probably should have been $300 max. $250 is probably about right, like Z said in vid. No matter how well it sounds, I just don't like Hifiman as a company, the R10 launch was atrocious, How the CEO acted there Is just smug advertisement, he singlehandedly made R10 a niche product. And anyone wondered why R9 exactly has that color and have a black background on its box? They just oozes the bad image of old Chinese manufacturer's stereotypes. also their build. Sure, Im still salty about my Ananda's R driver dying due to Micromold, but damn that is a very baaaaaad headband for a multi thousand dollars headphone dammit 🤣.

$600 for these pieces of crud is pitiful. They don't sound all that great, Hifiman makes much more comfortable cans, the cable sucks, and build quality in typical Hifiman fashion is pathetic. The flimsiness of the HE-R9 pays homage to older Hifimans from 6 years ago. Hifiman has been in this industry for some time now. Stop giving them a free pass.
