There are a lot of comments made by "ignorant" people. They will certainly be very fast at work, but the result can only be considered excellent if it lasts a long time, and with their technique I have some doubts.

Not sure about the rest of the world, but here in Australia, we call that first layer 'the screed'. It is 4 parts builders sand (not a regular sand, but fine and clean), with 1 part cement. When it dries. it is is soft enough that it can be chiselled away if needed, but strong enough to hold the tiles. The purpose of the screed is to level the floor under and secondly to absorbed the crack of the floor under (usually concrete - which, if tiles are laid directly on it, will also crack with the floor movement).

@itatabisine6250
@itatabisine6250 3 месяца назад

You forgot to mention that the screed was supposed to dry for at least 3 days before they tile, especially such massive tiles. That screed and tiles are going to crack within a month or two because of all the movement placed on the screed on the same day of laying it. If i was the owner and i see that i would want a refund.

Wow. The final result looked perfect. The reflections weren't split, all of them looked completely smooth and level. Yet, in reading the comments from several people regarding the preparation of the subfloor, and that the floor won't last long, my mind is screaming "You're right! There's no way this floor will last. At the same time, my mind is thinking "These guys have probably been building floors this way forever and, in spite of my instincts, they're probably lasting for years and years". I'm very conflicted.

@whoyoukidding1
@whoyoukidding1 11 дней назад
@@bharath2477 I mean that all the things that were reflecting on the shine of the tile (the light from the window for example) went right across the grout joints without being distorted. Watching the video until the end I realize this is NOT a living room rather a main lobby with that elevator off to the side. Tile work is very nicely and meticulously done. Working with marble tile for over 37 years I can tell that the base(dirt) is not sound enough to bear constant weight and traffic over period of time. The thin set mortar being used will adhere to the tile...but not dirt. Nice video !

Lean mix used for aircraft runways at 0.3 wcr - so probably ok for an interior. Nice to see the boss turn up and pretend to help because the camera crew are on site. Somethings never change! :-))

And beyond that, I can't help but notice that there was exactly ZERO ACTUAL tamping of the dirt beneath the mixture that was created. Which tells me that in about a year, or less, there is going to be some settling and all that beautiful tile is going to start cracking or at the least the grout is going to give up and there will be an uneven surface before long. It's just a known fact that weight will cause dirt to settle unevenly if there hasn't been substantial reinforcement or a tamped sub-surface.

From the perspective of an experienced flooring guy, there are so many problems with the cement mixes they are doing. That troweling should be straight lines and it's crazy that they are standing on the unset tiles. I have never seen such large marble sheets put down for flooring. That's like a million dollar job over here. That looks awesome though.

You dont sound experienced at all vs them that are filming pretty much every step knowing that the owners can view it and also use it against them in court if something happens to not be up to par... Their techniques is over 400 years old.
@kanetao
@kanetao Год назад
@@khancrow8212 My experience is in Western techniques. The cement floor mixed at that ratio of sand to cement at that hydration level is a mortar and we would put down concrete (which is stronger and less likely to crack and less porous). You could argue that they don't need that kind of strength, but our building codes would never allow it (unless there was already concrete under it, can't tell). The thinset used under the tile is way too wet for our standards. But once again, not done to Western standards. In using our thicker thinset, we leave a thicker mortar layer under each tile, which means standing on an unset tile will canter it and make it uneven. The grout they use is also very dry. I do not know if a polymer was mixed in for sealing in the grout, but when the grout is that dry the grout lines have a high likelyhood of porosity or exclusions which means it cannot be sealed properly.
@flashmedia8953
@flashmedia8953 Год назад
@@kanetao polymer is a terrible sealer. It degrades over time. Western materials are not design to last. It's just business. But with these guys, their mix is over life-time warranty. Proven through ancient time.

I have a business that levels floors like this in canada. It's called dry-pack. Mixture of semi wet sand with Portland. Only difference is we mix one big pile and distribute via wheelbarrow or pails instead of spreading it like that. Although in that scenario it looked pretty effective
@lorddd1753
@lorddd1753 8 месяцев назад
I dont get it. What about ground movement? Temperature changes? Reinforcement of the floor? Wouldn’t this just go to shit in a few years?
@kevinmoreira86
@kevinmoreira86 8 месяцев назад
@lorddd1753 no man. I've done high rise lobbies in downtown Toronto, Trump tower included. Dry pack is almost industry standard when you're putting in high end very large tile. 4'x4', floor needs to be 100 percent level. You pour a primer first to adhere to the concrete, and the concentration of Portland takes care of the rest. As thick as 4-5 inches won't give you any issues.
@tomasom4497

@@kevinmoreira86 Yeah, but you are doing it over the concrete slab or other sub flooring like you are supposed to. These guys are just doing it right over dirt, with no subflooring or moisture barrier under it. It will crack and fail doing it like this.

20:00 Those tiles all have the same print pattern and are all facing the same direction. Might be part of the look, but I think these are usually supposed to look natural, so randomizing the direction a bit might help achieve that. Great job on the screed, the way you did it takes a lot of skill and is not often used anymore here in Germany.

How I wish these tradesman were available back then. I had to train everyone I hired in these methods. Even building companies found it hard to believe these methods would stand the test of time.
