Exclusive concert by the Berlin Philharmonic Horn Quartet 

Sarah Willis and her colleagues from the Berlin Philharmonic Horn Quartet - Stefan Dohr, Andrej Žust, and Stefan de Leval Jezierski - play a selection of works arranged for the horn: Rossini’s “Le rendez-vous de chasse,” Schubert’s “Der Lindenbaum,” Mozart’s “Komm, Lieber Mai,” Mendelssohn’s “O Täler weit, o Höhen,” and The Hunters’ Chorus from Weber’s opera “Der Freischütz.”
This program of hunting- and nature-themed pieces is fitting for the orchestral horn, which is descended from the hunting horn. The quartet has also chosen the perfect location, in the woods of Prince Carl of Prussia’s former palace grounds outside of Berlin. They take advantage of the excellent acoustics offered by the Loggia Alexandra, built in the late 1800s to honor the prince’s late sister, the Russian Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. Completing the outdoorsy theme is the calm presence of Lucky, the music-loving Labrador retriever - who punctuates a musical pause with a well-timed sneeze.
Sarah Willis is a British-American French horn player. In 2001, she joined the Berlin Philharmonic, becoming the first female member of its brass section. Sarah Willis also has a long association with Deutsche Welle, so of course DW Classical Music had to include her and her fellow members of the Berlin Philharmonic Horn Quartet in our series of “Anti-Corona Concerts.” DW Classical Music is offering a digital stage for some of the many classical music artists who are currently unable to perform. The recordings are made by the artists themselves or by a single camera operator.
