In this exclusive interview, Ben Hanson from Game Informer interviews Pokémon series producer, director, and composer Junichi Masuda and the director of Pokémon Sun and Moon Shigeru Ohmori about why the Pokémon RPGs need a story and whether the team would ever make a game as open as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

lol, They said "visual expression." There was nothing funnier than looking at your character's blank, apathetic face as everyone around him tried to treat him like he cared.

xyzqsrbo I don't think so. I think it's more likely that they want the player to project their own emotions onto the avatar, rather than the developers dictating it themselves.

I think this video is very interesting because it shows how, above everything, making games is a creative and artistic endeavor. The reason GF doesn't always keep certain mechanics is because they always want to try new things. They didn't needed to put so much focus on SM's story, but they did because it was something they wanted to do, and it seems it was something they enjoyed doing. I feel like people often forget that content creators aren't there to please us, rather, they present us with their work and we choose to support it with our money So basically, if they don't want to make a open-world game please respect their option. They can make an amazing game regardless

My favorite games in the Pokémon series are the ones with more story focus like BW/SM. However the ones I replay the most are RBY/SGC (mostly their remakes) in those versions every play through feels new compared to the more story based entries that feel like if you beat them once there is no reason to replay them.

Who doesn't want story in Pokemon games we actually need good story in Pokemon games but also we want to explore Pokemon world not in real world, in fantasy world where bad organisation attack region and we have cocky rival that push us where we could capture Pokemon in wild you see it just like in Pokemon anime though S&M focused a lot on open world

Remix The Milotic I never said you need cocky rival to make good story, BW doesn't have cocky rival but has deep mature story in it and anime means the way we've seen Pokemon in the wild in anime they could replicate the same format in Pokemon for switch overall I don't care about Pokemon being open world I'm just glad we're going to get main Pokemon on switch

Hero Of Wild The pokemon formula is great, but for the switch I want a much bigger map, a lot more story, a lot more pokemon, and a lot of exploration and adventure outside of the main story. Also a big great post game like in Gold and Silver. That's really all it would take to make a great game.

I fucking hate this empty cry for open-world everything. Nothing guarantees Pokémon (and many other games) will have the charm it has now in an open world game. I'm just expecting GameFreak doing a first attempt at it and people raging at how it doesn't feel like a true Pokémon game.

The stories in Pokemon, especially lately, have never been enough for me. Really, I'm not that loving of Zelda either, but that's just because those games focus way more on the game. I don't know what BoTW is like because I don't have a bazillion dollars to buy a switch and the game, and I also didn't have the time to sit through someone's stream, plus what I've seen of it is slower than a classic doctor Who episode (references), but I don't it's anything amazing. I know that expectations for an hd pokemon game are high as hell, but I don't see this guys doing something nearly as fresh for the series as BotW did for Zelda. They seem to be quite confortable doing "smaller" portable games , so jumping to a HD console could be really rough. I mean , the process of creating BotW was not "we are out of ideas , so we are just doing an open world" , it was taking what made the series fun and unique in the first place , getting rid of stuff that was making the series fall in stagnation , and building new stuff to make the franchise evolve. Since exploration and discovery is the key element of Zelda , making it an open world was a reasonable decision. On the other hand, as they say in the interview , Pokemon is about the bonds you form with them. Surely there are a lot of people that feel like the "gotta catch 'em all" suits better with the brand , but I think that it makes the pokemon look like collectables rather than creatures, they are supposed to be special after all. This is me trying not to get too hyped for the game , let's see how much it lasts.
@ScionStorm1
@ScionStorm1 7 лет назад
Juan Puertas It won't be that amazing for Gen 8 as it'll be the first games of the new console for them. But look where they started with Gen 5 games on the 3DS and where they ended up in Gen 7 finally riding on the back of a horse. GF will get where they are going generation by generation as they figure out what they can do and how far they can go exploring the new console abilities.
@Neoxon619
@Neoxon619 7 лет назад
Sounds like Gen 8 is gonna be a bit more story-focused. I'm not really expecting a BotW-tier game, just a decent step-up from Gen 7. I'd imagine that the future-proofing of the Pokémon models will help cut down on the growing pains for HD development, even though I'm not expecting Gen 8 to come out for the Switch until 2019.
@Neoxon619
@Neoxon619 7 лет назад
I think it was the models that ended up causing much of the slow-down found in the 3DS games. I guess it was short-term pain for long-term gain.

galuca actually no, they started development in February/March of this year, since in June it was stated development has begun implying it's not been in development for long by that point and they never start development of a new gen until the latest gen is already out though it was probably in the planning stages late 2016
@pikaplayzhd595
@pikaplayzhd595 7 лет назад
yeah, they'll probably be able to transfer the current models of Pokemon over to the Switch and it'll obviously be all in HD as for X and Y they had to recreate HUNDREDS of models of Pokemon, that's probably why they decided to future proof as it must've been a pain meaning now all they'll need to focus on is building the mechanics, world, story, characters and Models for the new Pokemon!

I don't think it's supposed to be anything. If you just apply a gameplay element simply because "that's what you do in this genre", that is hardly a justifiable reason. Zelda is also an RPG, but Breath of The Wild seems to be doing great regardless. I still think a completely open world in a pokémon game isn't necessarily a good idea, but it has to be possible to experiment with the openness of the playing experience.
@raptax231
@raptax231 7 лет назад
You have to keep in mind (This is atleast my opinion) Breath of the Wild did so well because that's where the Zelda franchise began. From the very beginning Zelda has been about "Here I am in this big world...Now what?" Granted the later games became much more on rails. The earlier games are very much examples that zelda has always been for open world. Where as pokemon has never even attempted it and honestly like you said I feel it wouldn't be what people think. If you enjoy open world games then go play an open world game. But sometimes what you dream to happen doesn't end up as enjoyable as you had hoped.
@Jake123557
@Jake123557 7 лет назад
I agree with you. Personally I think it would be enough if they made a game where the story kind of take the back seat, like in the earlier generations. In other words, just like Zelda went back to its roots for inspiration, I think Pokémon could do the same. You know, put the focus more on teambuilding and the joy of exploring. They perhaps could experiment with the opportunity of choosing what route you want to go to get to a ceratin point, and maybe even the order of the gyms (or trials or whatever). But open world beyond that will be diffictult without drastically changing the core mechanics. As an added note: the world is always completely open at one point in the post game. Which means that if they find a good motivator for people to keep exploring in the post game, that would still give off an open world vibe to prolong the playability of the game. Honestly something small as bringing back trainer rematches would do wonders to keeping the world alive and interesting, in addition to other post game elements as legendary pokémon and other events.

Hey Game Freak, Pokémon can THRIVE in a world like Breath of the Wild! You can make a game that would give players the Ash Ketchum experience, allowing them to go wherever they want, do whatever they want, and freely interact with the world and the Pokémon and characters in it. Here’s how you implement it: Imagine instead of monsters and animals, the world is populated with wild Pokémon that roam freely. Some charge you when they see you, some ignore you, and some run away, so you must chase them down. When you touch a wild Pokémon, your lead Pokémon, (who has been walking beside you) rushes in to battle the other Pokémon. A battle starts without changing to a battle scene, the two Pokémon just fight where they’re at. During a battle, you select an attack, and then both Pokémon attack without pausing, so you can watch a real-time battle until the turn ends. Only then do the Pokémon pause to wait for you to choose your next move. Instead of Breath of the Wild’s runes, you interact with the environment using your Pokémon’s HM moves. For example, you can use Strength/Headbutt to knock over a dead tree, and aim it to fall across a river or chasm to make a bridge; you can use Surf to have your Pokémon tow you through rivers or the ocean; and you can use Fly to ride your Pokémon through the air, but you can only land in certain spots. (Think Eon Flute from Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire) You can even use Vine Whip to lower yourself down tall cliffs. Every time you obtain an HM, you unlock a ride Pokémon (like in Sun and Moon) that has the same ability. This way, the player always has the HM available, but is free to use their own Pokémon instead of the ride Pokémon. (For example, Charizard is always available to Fly on, but it would be much more fun to ride your well-trained Flygon or hang from your freshly caught Drifloon!) You can make the plot more open world by putting the starting town in the center of the region. Players are free to explore any part of the world whenever they feel like it. The farther out from the center you go, the higher the level of Pokémon you will encounter, so the only thing really keeping players from advancing is the strength of their own Pokémon. Hm’s make it easier to explore, but are only required to access secret areas, like the lairs of legendary Pokémon. Instead of one linear story, you have multiple “main” quests that you can choose to follow at any time. E.G. you can choose to take on gyms and become the champion, OR you can chase down Team Rocket, etc. and stop their evil plot, or you can ignore both and hunt down all the legendries and the game’s hidden secrets. There would be somewhere between 12 and 20 Gyms scattered throughout the region. You only have to beat 8 to gain access to the Pokémon League, but you get an extra special reward for beating them all. I hope this gives you guys inspiration on the potential the Pokémon series has to be one of the greatest Open-World adventures there is! You guys make some incredible games, keep up the great work!

I think right now they don't have the budget to make the game open world AND as good as breath of the wild. It would just end up being unfinished in many areas. However if it was possible I would be okay with it. No idea why people are hating those who want open world pokemon, because that sounds awesome if done right. I think people are scared of the open world being just like any other open world game which may ruin the game, which is an okay assumption, but you have to admit if an open world pokemon is done right it'll be much better than linear games from before. If that's not possible I'll be okay with a linear game, but linear games can also be bad. So you guys should keep that in mind too.

Lol that company is making billions of dollars for Nintendo but somehow Monolisoft has budget for HD Jrpg project. This has nothing to do with budget at all. There no need for Open world like Zelda breath of wild. I would rather have Zoned open world like in Xenoblade 1. Linear map with a big maps.
@TexelGuy
@TexelGuy 7 лет назад
You're literally twisting the meaning of open world. Dude, open world means that you can visit any place you want at any time, even if it is in different "zones" or parts blocked by loading screens or something. You just need to be able to visit any place you've already visited again. Even undertale is open world. Also, yes, a lot of this has to do with budget. Open world games cost way more than linear games. They'd need multitudes more money than previous pokemon to even try to make it non linear. There's no way they can even try that. *Budget does play a part in their decision in not making the game open world* . I found their excuse of "open world being only for sword fights" stupid because there's 100s of reasons I can just imagine that could make pokemon happen in an open world setting.
@keveneven1410
@keveneven1410 7 лет назад
TessellatedGuy I kind of agree. Open world is great and all, but if the developers don't mix it with the Pokemon formula perfectly then the whole game will be ruined(somewhat). There's nothing wrong with being chained to the story though, as long as it has a long enough leash.The pokemon formula is great, but for the switch I want a much bigger map, a lot more story, a lot more pokemon, and a lot of exploration and adventure outside of the main story. Also a big great post game like in Gold and Silver. I want there to be a great in depth story but still have lots of exploration.I still don't think that you should be able to skip gym leaders. Basically what I'm saying is that Open world would be awesome, but if it's not perfect it could really screw up the Pokemon experience.

That is probably the biggest game style I can think of. unless they make the forest and caves bigger inbetween areas so it actually feels like a forest and cave. Then it'll feel a little bit bigger. Otherwise they'd probably just stick with the original gamestyle. I mean Sun and Moon had a great story felt like I was playing a character that was a part of a pokemon anime. So if they enrich the game with more story but obviously not too much text because some people dont even read, then the game can only get better from there. Plus it would be nice to play the same person over and over again so we can feel an attachment to that person and meet people who already knew us from previous regions. Like if we play some new gen 8 game Lillie wont know who the hell we are if we bump into her. If we played the same kid from Pallet Town we may or may not have bumped into someone we knew. Idk.

There will always be people that don't like the direction a game goes. BOTW has so many people that didn't like it. It'd be hard to be a game developer for a game that has expectations as high as Pokemon, Zelda, Mario, etc... Nothing will ever be good enough for all fans. That being said. I'm the type of fan that just wants anything Pokemon. If they remade Blue or Red but open world, to me that would be adequate. Don't make me go fight Brock first. Don't make me get HMs to get places, make me get Pokemon to get places. Flying, surfing, etc. In the TV show Ash didn't need HMs, I shouldn't. Ash didn't need to go to Brock first, he just did. The bosses on BOTW get easier the further you get in the game. Not because your level goes up, but because you get better at the game. All of the bosses are basically the same "level." I wouldn't make an open world Pokemon game that is leveling up (which is one thing I love about Pokemon games in general), but make it about the exploration, catching pokemon, and beating gyms. Then head to the Indigo Plateau and fight in a tournament, not against the Elite Four. If they had come out with this type of game instead of Zelda, it would have been a hit too, but they did Zelda and it was amazing. Nintendo fans just want more of their favorite characters doing new things. Of course this is all my opinion, and I understand it doesn't make a difference in the overall scheme or direction Pokemon is going. I just wish it, but I won't be disappointed if it never happens, I am just grateful they keep coming out with new stuff. This being said, I also wish they would do an open world Avatar: Last Airbender type game...

I have huge respect for Game Freak for not turning pokemon into a mmo or ppen world. People think it will work, but it won't and game freak knows it. Sure, we can have more player freedom but add too much and you take away from the pokemon experience. Not to mention the super effective gameplay stuff only works for a turn-based rpg. There is also a big issue with an open world pokemon game is the fact that Gf doesnt have the time or budget. It would end up being a rushed, low budget game. For game freak to not cater to those people who want that just for money is respectable. Good luck gamefreak.

Hardware evolves... first thought that pops in their mind is expressing the story? Not making the world bigger and with more exploration depth? The damn regions are still small with 5 second tube-like routes, in fact exploration got WORSE in SM with barred off places and nothing to go out of the way for, it's the FFXIII of Pokemon. Reminds me of why I stopped caring about Pokemon after gen 4. They're focusing on the entirely wrong things. Better hardware means better worlds and gameplay, not "we can now make the story centerpiece and have the game itself take the backstage".

Steel Tarkus I love the story though. While older Pokemon games are great and all, there's more motivation to do things in these story driven games. Honestly, past gen 4 is when the games started getting really good. Besides, the only area that disappointed me was Ultra Megalopolis, because that was blocked off, but everything else was fine.

"Previously you couldn't even do facial expressions" no, you WOULDN'T do facial expressions. Final Fantasy VI had fully expressive characters way back on the SNES, which is about on par with the GBA, and yet we still don't have anything but blank stares from our gen 7 characters.
@StitchedXOnXSmiles
@StitchedXOnXSmiles 6 лет назад
BJGvideos The Player Character is really the only one that has that problem (even then, they have multiple expressions, they just aren't used nearly enough.) Hau, Lillie, Lusamine, Guzma, etc. are all pretty expressive. Just look at their face textures.

Normally i wouldn't complain about a game that hasn't even come out yet, but GameFreak, you really need to make a Pokemon game BOTW style, i mean this could help you in getting alot of your fan base to stay or even to come back, everyone would start believing in you again and if you really did do it then everybody wouldn't be on your neck all the time because you would have done that thing alot of older fans really want in a pokemon game, imo it's your best chance to do this kind of game because of the hardware being a hybrid system.. Oh and PS. open-worlds is not only for swords and shields or guns, it would be perfect for catching Pokemon and developing bonds with them 😄👍
@martinchristensen6786
@martinchristensen6786 7 лет назад
Galva Tron your gonna be amazed right now, but i have never touched a Zelda cartridge or even a disc, so i wouldn't know how long it took for that franchise to come to fruition, but that's a h*** of a long time 😩 so Pokemon is pretty much doomed then 😱😂 jk, but seriously now, some people are right though, about one thing imo, and that is, open-world doesn't necessarily mean that the game is gonna be great or awesome, a great open-world game needs an awesome story and lots of things to do, just like Skyrim.. but yeah i think that GameFreak could pull something like that off provided that they have the cash, willpower and the knowledge of the system to do it, but ultimately you can't create a masterpiece if you don't try it.. But hey maybe i got disappointed over nothing, maybe they'll create something even better than what i had in mind, maybe open-world is further in the future.. but for now i'm still hyped because it's the first time a Main Series Pokemon title is coming to a home console, so i'm really looking forward to see what's next 😊👍

Martin Christensen Open world sounds cool but it really conflicts with the Pokemon formula and experience. If they made it open world it would have to be filled with things to do. And personally, I don't think be able to skip straight to the 8th gym is a good idea.The pokemon formula is great, but for the switch I want a much bigger map, a lot more story, a lot more pokemon, and a lot of exploration and adventure outside of the main story. Also a big great post game like in Gold and Silver. There are so many things that could go wrong with open world Pokemon. I think the game should have a great linear story but with a nice open feel to it so the story isn't stopping you from exploring a lot. One problem with open world is that if you travel too far too early you could encounter a level 42 wild Pokemon and you only have a level 5 starter. Players could feel almost scared to places because they get wrecked and this would almost discourage exploring all the lands of Pokemon. A linear game makes the player progress along with the story which is good. If not done correctly, open world could ruin Pokémon's great formula.
@martinchristensen6786
@martinchristensen6786 7 лет назад
Keveneven well i agree that it could ruin the formula, but it could also be the greatest thing that has ever happened to this game, anyway i actually think that they are working towards open-world, it just takes time to reach that because the pokemon games seems to evolve very slowly, and the reason for that slow change might be that if they change too much too quickly, people would argue that it isnt Pokemon anymore..
@keveneven1410
@keveneven1410 7 лет назад
Martin Christensen to put what j said simply, open world could make the game either amazing or bad. It depends on how they execute it.
@martinchristensen6786
@martinchristensen6786 7 лет назад
Keveneven oh maybe i didn't really get what you were trying to say, i just woke up so i wasn't fully awake when i wrote to you 😄 Anyway your right that the execution has to be spot on, otherwise it would just crash and burn, and nobody wants a Pkmn game to do that, it would be horrible because the Pokemon might be trapped in the game 😂 jk..

NO NO NO. THAT'S WRONG. They took the story and focused only on the MAIN story. Then the rest of the game is go get those legendaries. THEN NOTHING. The games before the 3ds versions had many sub-plots after the main story. A lot of them were really creepy, but also really awesome. The 3ds games left nothing to explore, unlike the other games. The main storyline of the games were about 25% of the entire game. Gamefreak is going the wrong direction.

Just giving us the BOTW open world with tons of pokemon in it would definitely work, I'm certain. I mean, look at how happily people have explored Hyrule for little to no ingame reward, and I'm not excluding myself here. Just hand us a campaign of sorts that has an increasing level for the opponents and we'd go out there and train. ;) There would be a normal exploring mode and a battle mode, as usual. Where the battle mode could be triggered by aggressive pokemon or by the player approaching and engaging in fight on purpose, let's say by sending in a pokemon. But actually, what I'd like even more than that would be a BOTW like version of Pokemon Snap. Including riding on Pokemon. Ground, water - air?
@XAD222
@XAD222 7 лет назад
be honest, it's not the problem with game making, it's the problem with the game company, if they are uninspired like GF, then we will not have good games on switch, open world is not bad idea, because it will show the beauty and size of the pokemon world and will give them bigger potential to make the player adventure even better
@ScionStorm1
@ScionStorm1 7 лет назад
Dad_Shoes I don't want open world. I just want bigger, deeper maps that use as much of the area as possible. Still with the same achievement-restricted rules of the traditional games, but maybe letting you go back to the earlier maps to find new area are unlocked. Like the first forest on the map would have a early game scale of encounters and map size, but earn 3 gym badges or whatever and return and a new path in the forest has opened up to a map twice the size you originally thought and maybe after defeating Elite 4 you find the forest routes are even deeper and you encounter a small secret village or a cave entrance in the back of a secret lagoon. Imagine that, but with dozens of areas all over the region. Maybe turning large tree areas into a two-tier map where your first pass takes you through the ground understory but later in the game you can take a path that leads up into the upperstory of the forest/jungle through branches wider than you are tall and suddenly have access to rare Pokemon that never come down to the floor area of the map.

+Dragonscud To be fair, while the other director's games are generally considered better, they're all third versions (with the exception of HG/SS), wich means that, for the most part, they're Masuda's games with some added content. So it shouldn't really be a surprise if, for example, Emerald was better than Ruby/Sapphire, because Emerald is basically R/S with the frontier brain
