Welcome to another power-packed episode of Impact Theory, I’m Tom Bilyeu!
In today’s episode, Matthew Hussey and I are taking a deep dive into romantic relationships and how to most effectively navigate the challenging, high-stakes dating game in 2024.
From THE pill to the red pill, dating apps, crumbling gender norms, social media, weed, porn, aimlessness - all of it together is a disastrous cocktail.
And the volume and velocity of terrible, complex dating advice on the internet is astonishing, given there is a hilariously simple path to seduction and success in finding a real, lasting partnership.
Here to unpack the complexities of modern relationships is New York Times bestselling author, speaker, and world-leading dating coach, Matthew Hussey. Check out his latest book, “Love Life”, out now at lovelifebook.com.
In this interview, we touch on:
- stories men tell themselves about why women aren’t interested in them
- the red pill advice driving men crazy
- the search for empathy and acceptance in relationships
- challenges of modern dating culture
- the importance of healing from past traumas
- embracing individuality and charisma
- the impact of vulnerability in attraction
- societal impacts of women's independence
- the balance between protecting oneself and being vulnerable
- recognizing and avoiding unhealthy relationship patterns
- developing power beyond traditional stereotypes
- practical steps to feel visible and improve self-worth
- the complexity of understanding women and attraction
Through personal stories, both Matthew and I open up about our experiences with vulnerability in our relationships and the profound impact of being fully seen and accepted.
Buckle up for an episode that promises to not only challenge your perspectives but offer tangible advice on navigating the evolving landscape of love and relationships.
Chapter Markers:
[0:00] What drives attraction
[41:07] Keys to finding love
[1:13:22] A different perspective on life's unfairness
[1:44:33] Not everyone can understand you
[2:18:47] Priorities for personal fulfillment
[2:53:10] New sources of validation
Powerful Insights From Matthew Hussey:
"So much of what drives attraction is more charisma...I think that it's a kind of the idea that the rich guy gets or the attention is quickly undermined by how much a woman will pay more attention to someone who's charismatic in a room than the guy who is like, you know, flaunting how much wealth they have."
"If you have fundamental things in place, like your own confidence, like an acceptance of yourself and who you are, like a sense of purpose about what you enjoy and what you want to do in life, you are going to find someone who appreciates you for what you are, for who you are, for what you're doing, that you don't fit into some kind of a mold that would win the popularity contest in the mating game."
“How do we actually bring men and women together and have them be more compassionate towards each other on the women's side, too? Because to me, that will change the game for people."

Let’s face it, whether you are a man or a woman, it’s easier to blame the injustice than it is to do the work to become a high value individual. There are multiple traits that combine to make someone an attractive mate. You don’t have to be the tallest, the richest, or the most beautiful; but you must bring a net gain to the relationship. If the people around you don’t recognize your value, you need to reevaluate yourself or build a cohort that is capable of appreciating you.
@minabotieso6944
@minabotieso6944 Месяц назад
You can blame the injustices and do the self work at the same time. The issue is if you live in a society where a very small percentage are succeeding, then it’s going to be hard for self work to overcome that. It’s extremely hard to economically succeed in 1st world countries but it’s 1000x in poor countries which is why people emigrate. Will power can’t overcome bad conditions most of the time

What these guru's are missing while trying to be somewhat politically correct is that Women make wrong choices often as do men. All the idealistic talk of attracting people whose idea of perfect is "the bad boy" or the "irresponsible cool guy" doesn't work well when families and children are on the line. Look at the divorce rate now and in the past when people lived boring old responsible lives and women wanted a guy who could take care of the family and provide the masculinity male children need to develop properly. Now that everyone is trying to live their best life and optimize everything they are undecided, unaccountable, confused about life and everything in it because they would rather listen to temporary feeling and guru's their same age and experience level than morals that make perfect logical sense and served society well.... too boring.

Matthew literally addresses this. He says people outgrow there silly relationship ideals, like wanting a tall millionaire husband, and that women and men grow up and look for different things. And that is reasonable. Most people back in the day got married to the person around them because men were literally a woman’s ticket for survival. Women literally depended on a man for a home, food etc, so obviously they put their own true desires to the side. Most women did not marry their husbands because they had an amazing relationship - they did it out necessity.

A lot of you want a black and white answer and so Matthew’s approach might frustrate you. But Matthew addresses men AND women as HUMANS first before their gender. I wanted to help out with the question about the difference between men and women in the workplace concerning the bearing of children. Women can have babies. Men cannot. Women are biologically equipped to be that babies primary caregiver. Let's stop ignoring the elephant in the room here. It takes 2 people to raise a child effectively. Men and women are biologically equipped to take on this task as a team, fulfilling specialized roles. It is a mistake to believe we will find fulfillment by "liberating" ourselves from this biological (spiritual?) reality.

Infact I think that housekeepers should be highly paid because it’s a thankless job and extremely difficult and monotonous. I dated one rich man recently, but his vibe was very bad. He was testing me more and more, on the first date he pretended to be a "nice" guy, which felt very fake. Over the next 2 dates he showed who he was, I was very turned off. He didn;t see me as a person, didn;t ask anything about me, he was with me just to get over the date to get something out of me. What women want to feel like with a man is like an older brother, relaxing, understanding, maybe playful in a right circumstance, who listens to you, who doesn;t hide who he is, doesn;t pretend to like you or trying to play any game, just wants to spend a nice time together on a date without any objective "how can I get her into my bed?".

Thank you Matthew for getting to the bottom of the roots. Generalisations are interesting and can help to understand differences, which can be important, and I firmly believe that we learn to integrate and learn from each other. But the next and profound step is to recognise what unites us, and that is the longing to be loved and accepted. Status, beauty and charisma will never fulfil you. Start with yourself and then find the person who loves you for who you are. And I agree 100% with his conclusion that a man often doesn't see a woman as a person, but as something abstract, as the other. But we are really the same thing. Another soul being in a male or female body with the same desires as yourself. This is a great interview because Matthew is so brave to reveal himself to all of us.

I still think the main reason people are unhappy is that they are looking externally for what they should be happy about. They look to popular culture or peers and they are 'supposed' to value in a mate, in life, rather than truly introspecting to understand what they themselves want. We look externally for validation, etc. I know a lot of this is baked into our genes, but while genes are powerful, our minds can subvert these programs over time and allow us to stop acting and thinking so automatically.

Hussey's style of speaking appeals to his customer base, which is primarily young Western women. Hussey is good at making "pleasant sounds", as opposed to being good at making pithy, logical arguments. Being good at making pleasant sounds really resonates with the average Western woman; it has a seductive quality to it.

The right woman for you will never find you less of a man if you show your vulnerable side as long as it isn't the only side you possess. So Matthew found a good woman 👍 and I disagree with Tom - it's not just about fixing oneself and appearing always attractive but rather being genuinely yourself, and which will weed out who is not right for you. Trying to hide your vulnerabilities can only last so long for one sided affairs with one sided partners instead of embracing and supporting the whole person in a joint journey of healing and development.

I disagree. I think he really believes what he says. He works with women who desire a real relationship over pursuing sex. The redpill truth that Tom talks about sounds like truths about the sexual patterns of men and women (I.e women want rich, powerful men, men want young beautiful women). But this is true only for sex, while Matthew sees how people actually get into relationships. Most redpill people don’t have any idea what real relationships are like. So I think Matthew is right, he actually has the perspective of people who want relationships more than sex and validation

Reading books like Get The Guy by Matthew Hussey are incredibly useful since they are written for a female audience. This book is likely to get you to sympathize with women much more and to realize how women are on a similar path as you. They too are confused in areas of love and seduction. I don't support every message in this book since it is built off of a traditional notion that "getting" the guy (aka getting commitment and marriage) is the ideal end goal. However, it is useful to read this to understand the average woman's experiences as well as many of their common concerns. Other books that are similar: "Making Sense of Men" by Alison Armstrong "It's a guy thing" by David Deida

This whole attraction thing is actually simpler (in the macro, population wide extent) than most understand. Men are attracted (on a subconscious level) to women they see as likely to produce the best offspring (young, hips, chest, health, etc). Women are attracted to men (subconsciously) who they think would best protect and provide for that offspring (health, wealth, status, power, strength, height, leadership, etc). Of course every person is different and has different tastes and desires, but in the macro, this is what it is.
