What a great Job they have done : they deserve immense respect . Right now in these early pioneering stages There is currently a place for a Heuristic Sandbox Humbot , just as there is currently a place for Waymo & BYD. I hope they can invest and learn to keep pace with the arrival of Genuine General Purpose (work anywhere) Humbots. Big Bucks . 🤞🙏

This is the equivalent to Cruise with autonomous driving. Not needing fingers and hands is a nice shortcut, but that’s like Cruise being limited to a geo-fenced area. Tesla is ultimately going to win both these races because it doesn’t take shortcuts and it solves the most difficult problems even if it takes longer. Tesla’s robots will be useful everywhere, including homes, factories, and Mars!

Agree/disagree. I took from them that the point was the amount of buyers that exist so exceed the need for hands today makes getting to market with basic grips good enough for now? I also took that from a funding perspective they are trying to get quickly to profitability to survive. If they can sell or lease you a robot that fills a job, they can survive and grow.

Why buy a pickup that seats more than two but has a short bed if you pretty much never need to transport more than two and a short bed would mean making more trips to move stuff? Right tool for the job. Robots, regardless of who makes them should probably have changeable hands. Like the example given, remove the hand and install a specialized tool if that's the best solution.

The difference is between building a robot that can do any task, and building one limited to one kind of task. If we are building a limited one, why build it humanoid? Most likely, we will eventually build both humanoids and special purposes ones. I'm pretty satisfied with that they start with humanoids, because if you can get that kind good enough, the other kinds will be a breeze!

@@larsnystrom6698 I think we'll build humanoid and specialized robots at the same time. Because we already are. It will all come down to whether there is an economic advantage to building specialized robots, if there are sufficient numbers of jobs for a robot with only that capability. Humanoids will do the rest of the stuff.

Digit seems to be focused primarily on moving objects around in a commercial environment. I'm not sure how they will get to a more general purpose robot without more precise hands and a more compact leg design. It seems like Boston Dynamics legs that can flip 180 degrees gives the ability to squat close to something it needs to pick up with the knees folding backwards, while also being more compact and allowing it to navigate cramped spaces like you'd find in a house. For safety it's concerning that Digit's actuators appear to freewheel when they lose power and the robot collapses like a house of cards. It seems like it would be especially dangerous around children. So this seems like a commercial bot and not a house bot.

I think having a narrow problem they solve well and can continue to improve on is a good thing, and for now (like video conferencing units used to be) local specialist setup, consulting and aftersales wil bel superimportant

Digit is a veru good specialized solution! If you have limited capital, you need to get it to market quickly to generate revenue This is where Tesla has an advantage. By comparison Tesla has unlimited capital and can work on a more generalized solution Tesla has a lot of advantages

@@tireddad6541 Tesla is likely already working with Tesla. At least they should be this year. And because it will be actual in-house work, progress should be rapid and efficient. No need for engineers to go from the bot-home to the factory if a problem develops. I see a future of multiple winners. Just like most industries.

It's a pretty funny idea, and probably much cheaper to build than a humanoid. But much slower than the centaur form with wheels. That one would move much faster, and turn very quickly. So, I don't think Digit is even close to optimal. But neither is a humanoid.

How many robots can they produce per year? Because you need a giant fleet to produce enough Data. They are the leader if they can scale to 5 million robots faster than Tesla can (they can't), their robots are actually general purpose (They aren't), their software is up to the task (I don't know) and their compute is equal to Tesla (Nope, orders of magnitude less). Just because they are the first to have some rudimentary robots bumbling about in very specific tasks, doesn't make them the leader. Now i am not saying they won't be successful. This is a giant Market and you don't need to beat Tesla to make money. I am just allergic to unwarranted hyperbolic statements.

They don't need to manufacture at higher rates than Tesla. The addressable market is immense. And they don't need to have a robot as smart as what Tesla may turn out to produce. Just one smart enough to do more simple, repetitive jobs at a price lower than human labor.

They are saying 10k run rate this year and I suspect you would not need millions to get the data to train, especially with how well these bots transfer from sim to real.

Like what? I think they did great, I think like Herbert and Scott always say there will be endless demand for the all humanoid robots for the foreseeable future even if their functions are going to be quite limited relative to a general purpose Tesla bot, I believe we are still quite a ways off from a really capable bot as a mass product, so any and all early iterations will still be bought up and put to work to cover the labor shortage. Thoughts?

I like how you asked about the collapsing of the chicken legs and safety concern, and she replied you'd have to dive into it.... had she never watched the news? This is America, someone is bound to protest robots and become the safety example, and others want the easy pay day law suit, then some people are just that oblivious or clumsy.

They may not yet be working at human pace but there's no reason they won't work much faster than humans. Humans have 'reaction time' issues that computers don't have. And we already see machines moving very much faster than humans.

I find it odd that no one makes a robot with legs which turns efficiently! What's needed is a hip that allows the leg to step outwards at a 45° angle. With that, there are two ways to turn. Step forward 45° and swirl around that foot, or stop back with the foor 45° out and swirl around that foot. Stepping back is the best way to turn in place. Digit is obviously missing that ability, an shuffle-turn very inelegantly! That makes a robot with legs turn almost as effectiveely as one with 4 wheels in a square 🙂

I would take the assertion that digit is first to be deployed in a factory with a grain of salt. . She knows her product but unlikely to know if Tesla bots are working usefully. Nor other bots undisclosed applications. Digit and other humanoid bots are arriving and thriving for certain.

As they pointed out very early, many businesses are having problems finding workers. US unemployment rates are around 4%. The commonly accepted level of unemployment with "full employment" is 5%. Some of that 5% is people between jobs, layoffs and having left an undesirable job. Some of that 5% are people that just aren't good employees, workers that no one wants to hire. I've noticed over the last several months that I"m running into people working in businesses that I would have fired very quickly. Just poor quality employees that wouldn't find a job in more normal times.

Tesla and xAI has Grok as a cooperation project. With both companies having a CEO that wants that, it's a simple choice. If Tesla gets a new CEO that cooperation might continue, or not. The idea is to use Grok in Robotaxi, to talk with customers, and to talk with Optimus. But both Robotaxi and Optimus is Tesla's products, whether Musk is there or not. The difference is that with Musk all these thing will run smoothly, and according to plans he has been thinking deeply on. Much of that might be lost, even if Tesla doesn't loose key employees with him. AI is most likely not in a smooth path forward. It's probably not just an issue of more Compute. I think it needs Musk to drive it forward. Very few dare doing what he now does, with those drastic investments into Compute. It's not the simple thing like buying enough Nvidia chips! Tesla is in a transitional phase. It's not a good idea to change the jockey in the middle of a race!

Agility is probably the weakest humanoid robot company even before the others have started shipping. Massive price No hands Non-standard legs Parts are just assembled and not built by them They think humanoid hands are a step back They think it's too early to use AI Bot is not general, it just moves boxes Bot relies on QR codes They will not be able to compete with all these missing pieces.

Prototypes are expensive. Costs decrease once design is locked down and production scales. Legs are working and working well for certain situations. They are making some parts. Perhaps they will make more once they actually build a factory. Humanoid hands are more complex and more expensive. Lots of tasks don't need them. They have an AI partner. Their bot can do productive work. Bot can use QR codes. And get info wirelessly. Careful when making assumptions. These are some smart people who know what they are doing.

If there are multiple groups working toward the same goals they are more likely to drive harder if they face competition. Good ideas tend to leak out of groups to other groups. Discovering something can move you ahead in the game but most often others will find out your idea and find a way around any patent you might create to keep them from using your idea.

Tesla is in trouble! True to tradition, here we go again. Every time the car manufacturer Tesla fails to deliver as expected, the focus is shifted to the non-profitable part of the conglomerate that cannot be counted on as everything is based on future expectations. How long will this game go on before it ends like Enron? Of course, it helps that some powerful in the financial market have lent billions to Elon, and need to keep him afloat, because otherwise they risk loan losses!

Óh the only debt they have is there to keep banks working with them . They have more cash on hand than any auto maker.
