Roger Hodgson, co-founder of Supertramp, discusses the creation process of some of the classics he wrote and composed such as The Awakening, Dreamer, The Logical Song, Take the Long Way Home, Lord is it Mine, Give a Little Bit, and so many more. Many of Roger's songs that were recorded with Supertramp were written and composed by Roger before he met Rick and formed the band. Roger goes on to explain that his songs were complete before he took them to the band and were therefore not influenced by lyric or composition changes by the band members. What a gentle soul. I was lucky enough to see him twice in concert and I even met him once (for a very brief five minutes or so) and he is one of the most pleasurable persons to be around, very friendly. He also gives great hugs! :) Thank you for your music, Roger! Namaste.

Beaucoup de douceur dans l’interprétation d'extrait de chanson, qui m'ont toucher droit au coeur. Même si je n'ai rien compris, puisque je ne parle pas Anglais l'interview était magique.La voix douce et clair, le calme olympien de Roger m'ont vraiment impressionnée. i just wish i had the opportunity to sit and interview him for about an hour and get to hear clips of his beautiful songs sitting directly across from him. This guy has no idea how lucky he is! he plays and sings effortlessly. and another thing that really strikes me about Roger, is he never seems rushed in his interviews. even following a show in the lobby and stuff. he is cool, calm and collected and never seems in a rush to leave. a very nice quality about him

This band needs to reconcile, I'd pay big money to see "The Classic Line-up" BIA and EITQM's. I love Roger Hodgson, but I now believe after many years.. he wasn't the only spark of magic in Supertramp. Helliwell, Davies, and that pounding rhythm section of Thomson and Benberg.

I love Roger Hodgson but Rick Davies was as instrumental to the band's success as he was. Helliwell, Thomson and Siebenberg were also great musicians. They meshed brilliantly. They were my favourite group as a 13 year old in 1975 and they are still my favourite.

Thank you Roger. I listen to you whether I'm happy or sad. Your music speaks to my soul. My husband plinks around on his guitar with no real knowledge of how things work but when he does it reminds of your music. We can't read music but we we play by ear. Your music is incredible. I'd have to say Roger is one of if not the most underrated great musicians/composers of a generation. His songs leave a mark deep and personally for eanyone who listens...the only other groups I can think of that do this are the Beatles and Pink Floyd...these bands just take you to another level

Who is Roger Hodgson?? You think people actually say this at the venues you play at today? Roger. . these people that come to see you are your heart and soul fans! Being born into a Dutch Immigrant family who came over to the U.S. in 1957 as refugees, I watched my father immerse himself into his classical music. He would sit back in his recliner and close his eyes and conduct the symphony orchestra he was listening to. That music taught me to appreciate every instrument's part in the making of that piece. And to show respect and gratitude for each member that poured their heart into what they played. Fast forward to 1978 or 79 - Boston Symphony Hall - the first (and last) rock concert - Supertramp Crime of the Century tour. WBCN in Boston were playing whole albums or album sides and I was hooked, not only on the album or the band as a whole, but YOU. I was hooked on YOU. Your voice, your passion and your precision. Now I, like my father, could conduct every note to the very last cymbal tap. And I still do. I have all of your music, as I should. Fast forward 42 years, my son - age 42 - was brought up on the very albums I had been playing for decades. Supertramp and your solo works. In The Eye of the Storm, geez, what talent, what a creative gift of love, light and life you are. And your music created a bond between he and I that is unfathomable and you have given us cherished memories like no other. He too will sit back in his recliner and conduct every note. You have touched our hearts and souls, just as you have done to your many loyal and loving fans who wouldn't hesitate to tell you. So when you said, in your interview, "Who is Roger Hodgson?" YOU are. And we, your loyal fans, will stand with pride as we clap, whistle and scream, "We love you!" Because it's true. it's Only Because of YOU.❤

I loved Supertramp but I think it rather conceited of himself to say he's the voice of Supertramp. (and he bills himself at his concerts this way) Yes he wrote many of their biggest hits. Two of their biggest being The Logical Song and Give A Little Bit, but Supertramp was more than just Hodgson. Rick Davies gave a darker edge to Supertramps music with hits like Bloody Well Right , Crime of the Century, Goodbye Stranger, Rudy, Asylum, Ain’t Nobody But Me, Lover Boy, Downstream, From Now On, Casual Conversations, Gone Hollywood, Just Another Nervous Wreck, Oh Darling. Yes towards the end they had creative differences and that's what pulled them apart. But this is also what made them great. I understand people have creative differences and yes it can be difficult to work together sometimes. But that's why you take a break from time to time. We've seen this time and time again with rock writing duo's. They are going at a 1000 mph making great music together and finally they burn out to the point they hate each other. Lennon/McCartney, Otis Redding/Carla Thomas, Simon/Garfunkel, The Everly Brothers, Ray and Dave Davies, ‎Liam/Noel Gallagher‎ and the list goes on. Neither Hodgson nor Davies have had anywhere near the success they had with Supertramp and both have faded into obscurity. Maybe this is what they want. Maybe after such a hectic life they both want to slow down. That's fine. But by not being together and working off each other they are robbing the world of some great music.

Cleary that Roger Hodgson made a great contribution to Supertramp, but calling him the “voice of the group”, it's obviously overkill! In my opinion, his greatest masterpieces -( I don't just mean popular hits) - but structural and sophisticated music - are Fool's Overture, Child of Vision and Even in the Quietest Moments. However, without the arranges and the participation of the other musicians in the band, especially Ricky Davies' masterful piano, maybe these songs wouldn't be so memorable. In my opinion, Davies is the main mentor of the group. Creative and versatile, owner of an unusual talent, even not being a classical pianist, he gave identity to Supertramp through a peculiar mixes of blues, jazz and pop. Not everything he did was good, such My Kind of Lady or Put on your Old Brown Shoes, that to me are just as cloying as the ones that Hodgson composed, like Babaji, Crazy or Dreamer. On the other hand, Davies saved the album Famours Last Worlds, one of the most eccentric Supertramp' works - with the beautiful song Bonnie. I'm a fan of Supertramp and I really felt their pathetic end, especially because of Roger Hodgson's egocentricity. In his interviews, despite the messianic tone, he always finds a way to value only “his work” and “his music”, disregarding the contribution of others. But without them, would Roger have achieved the same success? I think Roger, who on his own decided to leave the band to pursue a solo career, should have created his group sooner rather than answering an advertisement in the newspaper Melody Make, made by Rick Davies back in 1969. But if he did, maybe the Supertramp story would be different.

I agree. Furthermore I have found a very " interesting " sentence from him in which he said the from the Retrospectacle album he was involved in 27 songs ( it is clear) and he had "some involving ' to the others (4 ) songs . What does it mean ? Can somebody help me ? The mentioned 4 songs were released after his departure , without him , and these songs were written by Rick ..songs as Over you or Cannonball or Free as bird . According to him he contributed in the Supertramp albums and songs after 1983 ?? I do not understand it . Very surreal .

@@Donnacristi Yes, he had a great talent , but we see how important was the band for him . We see what happened after 1983. His last well-known song was released in 1982 with ST . I know that he hate Rick and he has some personal problems with him but I will never understand why they ( with his mangement ) were working on to overwrite the band history. He began with " I was Supertramp "and " my songs were not Supertramp songs but Hodgson 's songs ". It was not enough so he try to fade away Rick's songs. So his songs are Hodgson songs but Rick songs are Hodgson songs also . I met several comments from Roger fanatic fans that, in the reality , Rick songs were written by Roger. Surreal . In this interview I'm still really do not understand what he said about the " the other songs " on Retrospectacle album . These songs were released after 1983 , so without Roger , and Rick Davies wrote them after his departure . Per example Cannonball or Over you . I do not undertstand why Roger said the he " had some involvement " for these songs ?! . I hope I understood it well but I do not understand why he said , it is again ..very surreal For me both were genius , Rick Davies , too of course . I agree that Bonnie is amazing . This song and Waiting so long were my favourites from the weak F. last words .

I mean what kind of " involving ' he had on the songs which were recorded without him , and written after 1983 ( Cannonball , Over you per example ) Free as a bird was written in the 70's but it was Rick's old song. According to Roger the band members have nothing to do with his songs ( which were released under Supertramp name ) but he deserves recognition after the Supertramp songs which were recorded after his departure , without him. Interesting :-) By the way Rick and Roger were amazing songwriters , and the whole band was fantastic. I loved them after 1983 , too .

I just saw this interview, just last night, and I am watching again today, I feel like I know this person, it's like I knew the things he was going to say. Long time ago I listened for the 1rst time "hide in your shell" and that song simply got into my soul, and when I came to listen to all the other records, connected each time more. He is a beautiful human being. "Letting go of the past,... forgiving yourself for the past, forgiving others, and that's the way you become free" speaks to me.

Same here. Crime of the Century was probably the first album I ever listened to all the way through, as a 13 year old. I loved the entire LP then and still do but I particularly identified with Hide In Your Shell as I was a shy kid. Supertramp is still my favourite group.

He almost became the singer for Yes. Trevor Rabin wrote some songs and I think one of them is on talk. He does have a similar vision to Jon Anderson, and he has that high voice. But Yes with Roger singing would be just be Supertramp to me.

No , it seems it is just a myth created by the fans ( or Roger ) Pls read the interview with Chris Squire ( of Yes ) he said that Roger was not invited to the band , only there was some ideas in connection with side-project. Finally it was failed. Some fans said that Roger sang on Talk album , but it is not true . He co-wrote the Walls with Rabin , and he sang backing vocal on it but this song was released on Rabin demo album . The Walls was re-recorded by Yes members only ( on the Talk album ).

Furthemore all Roger's concerts were cancelled in 2021 incl. Bospop festival in Nerherlands. I stick to the facts , You should do the same, I am too old to create any myths.

The Awakening sounds very much like Rush for a moment and then it sounds like ELP and then it sounds like etc... This guy is a real talent. I felt like those Supertramp tunes were meant for me.
