This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Professor and Chair of the Department of Nutrition Sciences at Drexel University, Dr. Volpe confronts our popular denial of growing older and older every day. Dr. Volpe points out that it is never too late to start becoming an active and healthy individual - We just need to face that fact that exercise and eating habits are the best of attaining that.
Dr. Stella Lucia Volpe is Professor and Chair of the Department of Nutrition Sciences at Drexel University. Dr. Volpe is Past-Chair of the United States’ President’s Council for Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. Dr. Volpe is a nutritionist and exercise physiologist who has built a program of research focusing on three interrelated areas that traverse the lifespan: 1) obesity and diabetes prevention via mineral supplementation, 2) weight management through diet, exercise and educational programs, and 3) environmental change leading to weight management. She recently finished conducting a randomized controlled trial on the effect of magnesium supplementation on the prevention of the metabolic syndrome. She has also become interested in studying the effects of the Human-Animal Interaction on weight loss and health in children and older adults. Prior to beginning her faculty appointment at Drexel University, Dr. Volpe was on faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, and previous to that, she was on faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Dr. Volpe is both a Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist (American College of Sports Medicine [ACSM]), and a Registered Dietitian. She is a Fellow of the ACSM, and a past Vice President of the ACSM.
Dr. Volpe is a competitive athlete in field hockey, rowing and ice hockey. She enjoys being active with her husband, Gary and their German Shepherd dogs, Sasha and Bear.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Very encouraging talk. She seems to really care about the elderly and aging population. I'm inspired at 50. I started eating better and exercising in my late 40's, and my body forgave me quickly and responded well. I feel better than I did in my 20's and 30's. I do wish I'd begun sooner, but onward and upward. I'm feeling more hopeful about the last third (Lord willing) of my time here on earth.

How did you improve was it a big improvement etc I've damaged myself and want to heal, not sure what to eat to do so. As all the information I receive is difficult to decipher.

@@Chris-kr7gg I quit all dieting for one thing. I started moving just for the joy of it rather than trying to change the shape. Such a relief to lay that burden down. Crowd out the junk with lots of whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and eat when hungry, but eat the burger and fries now and then. So much happier.

When i was young i drank and smoked and did everything to get a buzz until hangovers took longer and longer to get over. But i still needed the buzz i was addicted to dopamine. The only thing i could do was exercise aerobics then the gym. As time went on i would have to do more and more to get a really good high. Now it's become just like all the other addictions in my life i spend all my spare time running or at the gym away from my family i spend loads of money on outfits, diet supplements caffeine isotonic electrolyte drinks and worst of all i become nervous and edgy if i miss a day. I now think that enjoying life means no stress no coffee and a healthy balanced diet without supplements and a glass of wine is just fine.

This is very timely and informative as it advocates that old age is not a disease. There have been misconceptions that older people may not be able to do or achieve things due to old age, however it is not totally true. We agree that old age should not be a hindrance for us to do the things we want or enjoy, however we have to maintain our physical wellbeing as we grow older. Reviving Mind also encourages older adults to move or exercise often as it helps in maintaining their strengths and physical capacity.

I stopped doing things because I have bone spurs that even surgery cannot correct. My joints will not move properly anymore and cause excruciating pain. I cannot walk. I used to do competitive martial arts. I used to dance. I used to walk for an hour every day. Now I can't walk a flight of stairs or even use a treadmill without pain, so don't lecture me about moving more. I do the best I can riding a bike and doing yoga whenever I get the chance. But with an old lady's metabolism, I'd have to do these things for 4-5 hours a day to make a difference since the calorie deficit these activities create don't make a dent in a bowl of oatmeal. As far as food is concerned, I try to eat healthfully, but menopause changes everything. It's like the weight gain is inevitable but you're going to be told you're doing things all wrong no matter what you do.

Was the breakfast thing based on studies or imagination/old wives' tale? I loose more or gain less fat when I don't eat breakfast, hypothetically due to the insulin effect or lack of. My BMI ~20 at middle age, and I make great food choices through out the day. Understood that I'm sample of 1, so if there are studies, can someone post the links?
@Dixxi91
@Dixxi91 6 лет назад
I would like to see those studies too :) Because I've seen studies that show you don't actually slow your metabolism by skipping a meal, in that study they found you have to skip three days of food before your metabolism slowed down :O So what she said goes directly against that, but she just stated a "fact". Which makes me thing it's an "old wives tale" retold. Maybe no one corrected her so she accepted it as a universal truth, just like I did until May 2017, just three months ago :)
@thomasschian587
@thomasschian587 6 лет назад
+Cindy I'll join you, so we are a sample of two. I often start eating around noon, and yet by BMI is almost exactly 20. I am satisfied with my food choices, too, but also would like to see those studies.
@Birdylockso
@Birdylockso 6 лет назад
My "breakfast" is a small cup of espresso. I think she is still spinning the old wives' tale. My BMI is 22, at age 53. The "three meal a day" thing is just not proven, and it is causing a lot of people to eat more calories than they should. At least she got that part right.
@ant7936
@ant7936 6 лет назад
It's an idea promoted by the food industry. There is a lot of money in "breakfast" foods. Like another (below) I fast most days and break that fast about noon after a period of 15-20 hours without calorie intake. Recent evidence shows much benefit from intermittent fasting - lower insulin levels, increased ketosis, weight control, autophagy etc.
@ec7125
@ec7125 6 лет назад
Eating Three meals a day was a European tradition based on no science. Exercising more than your food intake is the basic scientific way to lose weight. Eat less and exercise more equals larger weightloss.

We all need to take more resposible for our own health and fitness. People will only change when they themselves decide. I do "the zone" and I weigh my food to ensure I eat what I say. I also do Crossfit and record what I do so that it can be measured. One of my favourites is box jums, I can do 30" easily many times. This morning I decided to see if I could jump from my knees and land on my feet. After 3 tries I got it. My point is you only ever have one possession from birth to death, that is your body. The advice in the talk is valid but studying it and telling people what they should do is generally wasted because people already know what they should be doing. To prove her point though I am 72 male and am at a better level of fitness and health than at any time in my life. It is never too late to take a 1st step.

There's new scientific data; there's some obsolete info here about the slowing of the metabolism. A low calorie diet will slow the metabolism; intermittent fasting of various ways and fasting does not slow the metabolism. IF increases insulin sensitivity and glutathione.
