The American Heart Association says even bursts of exercise may not counter the unhealthy effects of sitting too much. Cardiologist Dr. Tara Narula joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss the new warnings about sedentary lifestyles.
My mother died of breast cancer and was overweight most of my childhood. My father died of advanced diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease. Both were very sedentary, both suffered from depression and slept a LOT. I remember feeling sad as a kid that they couldn't run around with me, that we'd go camping and just sit there. We didn't do things together, they watched me do them. I decided young that I didn't want to repeat that pattern, but as a naturally skinny person i was told I didn't have to exercise and wasn't taught to be active. I realized this past year that it was part of my identity to not be athletic or active. I didn't believe I could do it. I decided to change that, starting with yoga. I started cross country skiing, hiking, drinking more water and not drinking coffee. I feel so much better. Hopefully I will live a longer and healthier life than my folks and break the cycle.
you are not them, its basic knowledge that sedentary lifestyles will speed up mortality. i dont buy into genetics too much because everything has a cause and 100% of people that say something runs in their family fail to mention that their family never exercised, ate poorly, drank poorly, slept poorly, abused excessive amounts or drugs/alcohol etc. that leads to that "it runs in my family" mentality. When anyone eating poorly and all thee above will suffer the same fate because its a fact and it happens everyday and people are warned and do nothing about it.

Being a bus driver destroyed my body, in the process of changing departments cause of my back problems. Slowly rebuilding my body now and it's definitely a challenge.
Vegan do you think a buss could build a harness to holds the body upright and life up on the body just a little to take the stress off the joints? The stopping of the buss would be done by left hand or automation could kick in.
As a student, I just got a standing desk, which made me somtimes walk around, think while walking, stand up. I also do more daily tasks, such as cleaning my room, the kitchen etc... so rather than watching and in bed doing nothing, i move while watching the shows.
If they titled it, "exercise is the start of a healthier lifestyle"... It wouldn't convey what the video was about. I wouldn't have clicked on it. It would have been just like every other video. Telling me exercise isn't enough is telling me something new.
@BenR777 And then millions would be out of a really good paying job. Trucking is one of the only low entry jobs that pays well compared to the education level required.
Into this is such crappy information especially for people that are sick in bed that have been bedridden for months even a year laying around not being able to do much but go to the bathroom and take a shower. All this does is just D motivates them even worse, saying that they’re no hope for you people that are up showered, driving to work getting out of their cars walking into a business setting on their desk working upright getting up moving around getting water going to the bathroom but there still up and moving. It’s like a dream to people that are really sick and have to be laying in bed.
I love this so much!! 30 years ago I could not understand why adults sit so much! Why don't they move more for fun!? I was 17... Most adult "social" activities involve sitting rather than moving... It is so much more fun to move.
The body adapts to any condition as well as sedentary behavior, and to readjust to the active state takes years and hurts. This is where those who succeed are separated from those who fail.
thank you for this I have been exercising late at night 1 hour a day for about 3 days I know thats not much but Im trying and three days in a row is something I've never been able to do so I am happy with myself. I also plan on keeping this routine up of 1 hour a day but I also wanted to take at least 10 minutes a day every 1 hour to just walk around and run or anything but sit on my couch to watch tv. I plan on implementing this into my routine so I can quickly become more active and I dont plan on failing this time I'll exercise every single day no matter what for my own health. 🙏♥
@@nineveh17 Congratulations! The temptation to give up is around the corner. I'm not an expert but I avoid movement in the evening, I prefer that during the day, at the office, I take a break every 45 minutes, go up and down 5 floors casually and do a few push-ups (I started with 3 and after 3 months I reached 20). I'm thinking of introducing jumping rope in the same break. At home I rest and walk the dog. Everything easy, without tranpitation.
@Just Name In 3 weeks, an athlete who took a break for several months gets back in shape. An adult over 40, sedentary, who hasn't played sports since high school, usually doesn't become active anymore.
This is why so many Americans suffer from heart disease. She didn't even mention vitamin D deficiency issues either. I hope for the sake of future generations, we can move away from the 8-5 desk job lifestyle.
Too much of anything is bad for you, moderation. Even standing prolonged hours can do the same as sitting such as blood clots the science is there as well
Maybe if you’re 70+ or disabled/health condition but walking is not a substitute for actual exercise. It can accompany it but do not confuse it with actually exercising. They recommend a MINIMUM of 150 mins per week of moderate exercise. That means, walking not included in that and it’s the bare minimum. Ideally 60 mins daily of exercise and if you can walk a lot too, then great!
I'm worried I've ruined my health and my life, I just spend so much time lying down on my bed on my laptop, because its a huge comfort zone for me when I feel safe, I'm scared of leaving the house sometimes.
ignore them and just start doing a little something. I'm from a Caribbean Island, we DO NOT workout like Americans, we just do a little walking each day and still look younger and live longer than Americans do.
I feel you. That’s how I currently feel. I work from home now because I have no car and I don’t have any room in my apt for any equipment. I’ve been working out at home by following workout videos her on RU-vid. I do 30 minutes everyday weather it’s walking videos, dancing, I try to do hitting videos as best as I can since a lot of the moves are hard for me to do because of my weight so I make adjustments until I am able to fully do them correctly. The hardest part is starting and in consistent. Start off by doing 10 minutes everyday the first week, and you find yourself wanting to go longer.
That's how I got back into it. Baby steps and it was hard. It sounds corny but you just push s little more and it starts to just feel good. I almost gave up before I even started up again.
Why is it criminal? If we want things, and we want our garbage taken, and plumbing working, people have to work. Do you expect things to happen without anyone doing them?
@@Cam-wi3tp yes, that's because exercise then going back to sitting for 15 hours will undo everything you've just done, the title says one thing, the woman in the video tells you the other, stand up more, for every hour of being sat, stand up for 30, and move for 10. Being sat down for that long undoes everything.
This is what my physical therapist said. If you sit for hours, exercising for a little bit and then sitting for hours again isn't enough to undo the damage.
A sedentary lifestyle is not just sitting. You can still be sedentary while standing all day as well. The difference between sedentary vs active is less than 45 minutes of daily exercise plus daily activities vs 2 hours of daily exercise plus daily activities
@@pranavgaikwad1611I lost 2 inches in height over twenty years from being sedentary. Your spinal discs compress over time. If your back muscles are not regularly trained then how well do you think the weight will be carried? Running and walking are good for posture.
@@divebombdoug4872or wear a mask to keep themselves from inhaling viruses and pollutants that can give them heart diseases and cancer. Covid is still killing 1000 plus people every week. Wearing a mask is just soooooo much effort for snowflakes.
@@JasonBuckman When a person gets injured and is forced to be sedentary for a few years, it's disheartening to hear it can't be undone, that's my point. I'm going through extremely painful physical therapy now to get back on my feet and back to normal. My therapist says I'm doing well and have surpassed his expectations. So to hear it can't be done and all of my hard work won't change a thing is discouraging to say the least.
You can undo it, the point she's making is is getting 30 minutes of exercise a day isn't enough, you need to be stood up for half of the day, to be in motion and move all of the time. Exercising for 30 minutes then sitting down for 16 hours invalidates that 30 minutes of exercise. Therefore exercise isn't enough, you need to stand up and move, every hour of being sat down you need to stand up for 20 minutes.
@@TehLiquid I realize that now, but the headline of this video was very disheartening for me. I told my physical therapist and my doctor about this video and they both watched it and were a bit angry. They said as a doctor she should have clarified that her suggestions did not apply to those who have become sedentary due to an injury, or illness. It's my own fault though, because I should have known better than to click on a video like this that wasn't meant for a person in my situation. I guess at the time I was already so frustrated as to why I couldn't speed up my recovery progress that I sort of panicked when I read the headline. My thought was; 'I'm not physically able to do what she's talking about, so I'm never going to get back on my feet'.
Working out at the gym with lifting weights and formal cardio are both great. But what really moves the needle for health is doing lots of general daily movement. Stuff like going for multiple walks per day, climbing stairs daily at a moderate pace, standing more, parking further away, running closer errands on foot instead of driving, etc.. If someone is healthy, they should never be sitting/laying for an entire day. There should always be bouts of general movement throughout the entire day.
Yeah, the sad thing is you’re not taking in consideration some people can’t they start to get sick medication and then they’re basically bedridden throughout the day hard for them to even take a shower. I mean, how do you come back from that?
What is one to do if they are confined to a chair most days like wheelchair,n bad arthrtis and cant stand up every hour. What can one do in a chair to offset damafe?
So VR headsets might be even more the future now, I'm usually stood up when I play or socialise in it (not to mention the physical activity in certain games & people learning real dance/martial arts in VR)
Same... I was a physically fit and healo once 😢. Never stayed at home, always on the go chasing adventures... Now i am on my bed... Sedentary and mostly anxious about my health. 😢
It's not just a bus drivers. A lot of people have jobs where they can't do them while sitting. Employers don't care. We might as well be machinery... We are what they need to pay to get the job done. As soon as they can make robots that can do everything a person does, there will be no jobs.
I try to do at least 200 minutes of vigorous exercise a week. I stand for an average of 5 minutes every hour at work like get up an walk around every time the computer software is loading or saving. I also avoid ultra processed foods, artificial colors, inflammatory seed oils, and high fructose corn syrup as much as possible.
Employers don't care. Unless you could win a lawsuit against them. For example your job causing carpal tunnel syndrome. If you get heart disease from sitting at your desk, all they have to do is say there is no proof it was specifically because they didn't give you a standing desk.
So if you've been sedentary (not me), but those that have.. Did she say it couldn't be reversed? I was trying to listen well, but I think that's what she said.
She's saying that exercising while otherwise being sedentary won't offset the negative effects of being sedentary. You can't sit all day, work out for 30 minutes, and expect to be healthy. You have to stand up for the majority of the day, walking at least 7 miles per day
"Exercise not enough to undo harms of sedentary lifestyle".. so I am in my early sixties and have led a sedentary life, so it's over for me? If exercise isn't enough, all hope is lost?
No, talk to your doctor first. But walking is a great exercise. Im overweight and began walking in place multiple times a day and walk my dog 1-2 times a day and I’ve lost weight and am in better shape. You can start small, 10 minutes is better than nothing you dont have to start with an hour. If your knees are okay, take the stairs. Everytime i have to go down i go back up then down so i get a little extra movement. You can even do things while sitting if you have any medical issues or pain
You can undo it, the point she's making is is getting 30 minutes of exercise a day isn't enough, you need to be stood up for half of the day, to be in motion and move all of the time. Exercising for 30 minutes then sitting down for 16 hours invalidates that 30 minutes of exercise. i was an active person when i still worked at my old workplace. But since i transferred to my new workplace, all my energy was used to commute 2 hours every weekdays. I can't even bring or push myself to do exercise or even to take a walk every day. Not even the minimum 3 times per week. It's been almost 2 years. I want to change but i don't have the energy to. I'm sad and frustrated. *sigh. No worries. I'm just ranting.
I was sitting on the computer for 24 hours through my high school years, but never had any health problem except weak muslces, after I graduated and got a job as a Janitor, and I sign up a gym membership which I feel more active.
I have somebody that usually complains about this kind of thing..... But even I get the point... They are not saying don't exercise because it won't help you... they are saying if you sit for 16 hours a day and exercise for 5 minutes, it is not enough to counteract the negative effects of being sedentary. They tell you what to do right in the video. People want to jump right to "I guess I don't have to exercise then"
I have an enlarged heart and heart disease. I can barely walk upstairs do simple housework 😢😢😢😢😢. I need to walk .my goal is to walk 5000 steps in am and pm again
"I have one of those things that makes a noise if I've been sitting too long." So do I it's called my manager telling me to get up and sweep the floor.
You can work out 30 minutes in a day and still sit the rest of the day. Being sedentary is an issue of spending too much time without activity, if you are sitting more than 4 hours every day, you are probably living a sedentary life style.
@@deendeon10unfortunately at my job I’m sitting from 6am-2:30pm. I have three breaks including a lunch break but even on those breaks I’m sitting. I started running thirty minutes after work but I may have to start walking on my lunch break.
I beg to differ, my spouse has worked at a standing job for the past 25 years & is over weight. So it has nothing to do with sitting down. A friend of mine learnt human body for a decade and came to decision that physical training destroys human body after older ages. For instance blood vessels or joints may break a part.
Standing is better than sitting but standing in one little tiny 3-foot area and not moving is just as bad as sitting and that's required at a lot of jobs😢
It's frustrating when you're active and doing all the right things and then you have the people you care about deciding to stay at home all day when they already have health problem after health problem. They don't f cking realize how much they're killing themselves and making it unlikely for them to get out of their own hole.
yeah, my mother I watch go down the same hole. She’s so busy and stressed she neglects herself but I have to realize I can’t help someone who doesn’t want help, or at that isn’t ready. Kinda took the stress off me because i myself am sedentary and I see what it does to you and I am now actively turning myself around. I use to be an athlete and once you’ve seen what healthy feels like, you definitely realize what unhealthy feels like and it’s the worst.
Well if they are literally home all day and have health issues this would also seem like they are on disability. If they are on disability and do not work this kinda would make it hard to stay in shape. Working out does not get you anywhere if you do not have enough nutrition. Just with protein if you are 160 pounds you 90-100 grams of protein a day to build muscle. This is not even getting into the vitamins minerals and antioxidants the human body needs per pound. So Honestly getting in shape requires alot of money for healthy foods and working out. But even both of those thing's do not mean anything if you have sleeping problems because the body need's rest. In some cases that people are unhealthy even if they are lazy it may not be as simple as they don't want to be healthy. In some cases they may not be able to sleep well so they have no energy. In other cases they may not have the necessary healthy food to give them energy so they will not have it. If the person does not have the energy how are they supposed to use it in a workout? I mean you can only use energy you have and the body does require enough rest. My point is just because someone is unhealthy and is inactive does not mean they don't want to be healthy. To be truly healthy requires exercise a lot of healthy food's and enough sleep. Also some medications make it harder to build muscle .
the only types of office work commands sitting at a desk.....I was an income tax preparer for 15 years......I do take a 45 minute walk everyday, and when I go shopping I make certain I push the cart down every isle to get in those extra steps. What now.
There are people who cant move a lot, or have you not heard of this, tunnel vision on exercise alone, we know you have to move but some people are ill and do their best and dont need to be lectured at, another expert who should practice what you preach, never watch again
2:04 Wrong. They recommend at LEAST 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. They also should have said here that in order to have low risk for the diseases caused by sitting is less than four hours. Moderate risk is 4-8, and high 8 hours and higher.

Just because you gym doesn't mean you have good cardiovascular health. I've been doing strength training enough but I feel only getting stronger not energetic since Stamina isn't there. Being active throughout the day can't be replaced and LISS Cardio is better for gen pop imho.
Omg.. so that’s great I do aerobics 1-2 hrs a day 5x a week and pretty much sit around the rest of the week. So now I gotta get up and move when I’m not working out?? 😭 why Lord why 😂
Get up and do movements/excercise/walk for a few minutes each hour. Some movements can even be done sitting (better than nothing, although sitting is bad). Deep breathing is good too.
